This Tacoma is engrained in my teenage memories, I remember getting up early to watch them race on TV and being amazed at their speed up the mountain. So awesome for you to be able to have this experience and share it w/ the rest of us. Thanks, Larry!
I’d be curious to see a more in-depth dive into the 503E engine. Maybe an old Toyota crew member or engineer will be present at some point. It would be cool to see what tech Toyota did in the 80’s that translated into newer engines.
Its basically rnd/test block at toyota before 3sgte goes into production... Iirc it never went into mass production and only available as trd race engine programme during its days...
@@AmirPomen Correct the 503E was never a production motor, but didn't stop Toyota from publishing in magazines calling it a 3SGTE, lol. In a tear down there's nearly nothing similar to a 3S from a 503E, only thing I know that is the same is the bolt pattern for the bell housing. Like how different 503Es were it's easy to see with the heads having its own coolant manifold plumbed into the head, I don't really know of many motors or any production motor that ran a coolant manifold to the heads, at least not after 1980.
So awesome, My grandfather was Mel Egen from New Zealand he grew up with these guys. Flying out to Colorado tomorrow for the 100th! Also can’t wait for Leadfoot festival in New Zealand that it’s opening back up.
This is by far my favorite race car. I wasn’t following the Pikes Peak 100th anniversary very closely until I heard that Rod and his team were waking up the Tacoma for the race. Beautiful
This havs always been my absolute favorite car to climb Pikes Peak!! Thank you Larry for following this rebirth and showing us all that has been involved in doing so. Thank you to the Millens for bringing it back!! I wish I had been there to see it run!!
Great video! I remember first seeing Rod's Celica at Goodwood and thinking that was a monster, then when he came out with the Tacoma it was a whole new level. Rod always drove like he stole it! A certified legend in my eyes.
Haha. I like how they mention it's mainly about the noise and the nostalgic hat will be the run. Rod is a race car driver, he will push it and the run will be something to watch!
What a mad machine. Love it. Choo choo's like a champ. This truck still brings back good memories for me and it's just such a fascinating machine with a heck of a driver to boot.
I will forever remember this car. ESPN, and GranTourismo. Despite that, it would be a hard sell for me to believe modern fuels are in any sort of way superior to the lead based racing fuels available in the 90s. That sweet, sweet smelling 112 leaded UniCal, is also engraved in my memory. My Chevelle ran so good on it.
I'm so glad this vehicle is making a comeback. I have been using the Pikes Peak Celica as my wallpaper on my tablet for years because I like the look more but I still can't get enough of the Tacoma. Keep up the good work Larry👍
I loved and hated this car. Loved it for it being 1000hp of 4cyl fury. Hated it because I preferred Rod's Celica and because it beat Monster Tajima's Escudo. 😂👍
What an epic beast of a car! I always wondered why they chose a Tacoma as the base. Was it a marketing decision by Toyota, or was it the four wheel drive, as it was still running on dirt? So glad to see this come back, I loved driving this up Pikes Peak in the Dirt games.
Marketing more at the time. The Celica program didn't translate over in America for sales, especially since Toyota USA didn't get the ST205 Celica GT-Four and Toyota only built 2500 of those for WRC homologation globally and not a car more. Japan got 2100, Europe got 300 of those, and even down under, we only got 82 total (77 in Aus, 5 in NZ) of that 2500, the remaining 18 went to other markets globally. 80% of them are still in Japan. 👍
@@MafiaboysWorld Thanks for the info, I had no idea. It's a shame Toyota never shipped many of the Celica's to other markets, but why would they, it probably sold like hot cakes in Japan. They must be worth a pretty penny today.
@@Yvolve #77 of our Aus delivered ones is up for $90K with 170,000kms on it, #52 for 68K with almost 280,000kms on it 😬, and a couple of the 2100 JDM ones are here for similar money. 👍
After the race, this is now my all time favorite car. It was in the top 5, but after seeing it run- it is hands down my favorite. The escudo just lost that title lol
I grew up watching this taco and celica battling the monster suzuki... Actually i was hoping the escudo come as well for the 100th aniversary.... Too bad they didnt come 😓
Am I the only one that is thinking they took the dodge prototype from the 80's movie the wraith?? It looks identical just not black and is even old turbo tech!!!!! The wraith said turbo on it 😆🤣 I bet that thing is so fast! That's so cool! Love this channel you always cover the coolest cars man
That was a short run on dyno. 8200 RPM He should have taken in higher and for a few seconds. I think the number is higher than 666. You san hear it slipping around mid run. It's like a chatter.
@@helldiablo8471 Is that what I'm hearing? Strange. Other than I can't type. It's that noise starts about mid run and goes away near the end? Yeah it's the turbo after hearing it again.
The quintessential HillClimb Monster 👌
When I see your channels videos I think of Rods Yotas
Yessssss I watch your channel!!!!!!!
Couldn't agree more.
I love the slap in the face to American Dyno Jet “fudge the numbers to make everyone feel happy, …the American way” 😂
best bit it was said by an American.
Americans be watching Australian dyno videos like "why is it only making 500HP?"
The Kiwis are a very underrated country of motorsport gurus
Respect 👊🏽
Thanks man 👊
RODS SHIRT IS SPOT ON
The first thing to draw my attention 🤣🤣🤣
This scratched a 25 yr old itch I forgot I had. Larry this just brought me back to childhood.
after the first video, i went to ebay & got myself a hot wheels version of the pikes peak taco 💪🔥
Respect
Rod Millen is the legend. Need to meet the guy, i'd talk his ears off about his old rotaries.

"It was a combination of Toluène and Isooctane and some chemicals you cant get now " i wish Rod gave the full reciepe 🤣🤣
Might be Tetraethyllead or Methyl tert-butyl ether and Benzene, all are banned compounds.
Methamphetamine 😅
EPIC. I remember this truck from when I was a kid. This was the pinnacle of Pikes Peak.

What a legend, the single seat is just the icing on the cake
Couldn't be happier to watch a video again 👍👍👍 Thanks for fixing the end Larry! Glad you didn't lose your footage
Pray for good weather this weekend
Well your prayers weren't very effective, were they ? 🤣

The body work gives me RC car vibes - love it

Looking forward to seeing the results on the mountain. So cool to see this truck brought back to racing with the new Millen budget. Hats off to them.
Love these videos! You’re the best mr Larry Chen for sharing these moments with the community.
Superb content here Lazza! Greetings from the home of Millen, New Zealand!
Arguably the best engine ever Toyota 3SGTE
just love following this story, thanks Larry. This Tacoma is just brutal, raw, so well engineered
that thing doesnt stop revving!
Larry turns Italian when he interviews.... those hand gestures lol
Would love to see them refresh the Celica also!! Especially with a modern Turbo
Rod Millen, kiwi legend! 👊🇳🇿
That Tacoma Is Crazy Fast 9500 Rpm And 666 HP I Want To Hear It
can't wait for the mountain run!
I love the work that went into bringing this car back to the track.
Haha. I like how they mention it's mainly about the noise and the nostalgic hat will be the run. Rod is a race car driver, he will push it and the run will be something to watch!
Saw you at Pikes Peak today. You were RUNNING getting all the shots. Was really cool seeing you cover the event.
What a mad machine. Love it. Choo choo's like a champ.
This truck still brings back good memories for me and it's just such a fascinating machine with a heck of a driver to boot.
I would love to see the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak car run the mountain again like this. That would be epic!
I want the Cultus more than the Escudo, but that's only because I considered it a more wild design, and it's twin engined. 😎👍
It's comming in gran turismo 7 virtually hopefully the pikes peak track
The hoonipigasus was nearly stock underneath the fancy bodywork. This is for sure more advanced
This thing deserves all the likes.

W O W that revved higher than I thought it would!

Larry, sometime later, can you do the same kind of technical review video, but for the Celica ?
That laughing of the other guy when the dynoman emerged from the cockpit... 😂😂😂😂
Great build, cant wait to see it run!
Whiskey helps
I couldn't agree more
First video I ever downloaded on a 28k modem was of this screaming through the lower sections of Pikes peak. The download took about 2 days 🤣
666 the horsepower of the beast.
the numbers are great but the noise is better.
Oh that compressor surge as it loads on the dyno...
I know a lot of racing cars do this....but calling that thing a "Tacoma" is particularly hilarious.
I was really waiting for this video
Awesome series
I'm getting a Tacoma, lowering it and a spoiler. I should be pretty close to this spec.
Nice! I was wondering what was up with the end brother! Keep up the good WORK!
Would be crazy to see full development thrown at this to see how close it would run next to a brand new build ie Hoonipigassus.

Monster tajima later destroyed his record I think 🤔
@@olavofernandes7286 no the record stood for 15 years untill the road was fully packed
LEGEND!
That's the difference between an enthusiast and a racer, a racer dynos their car only when it's having issues, or originally being tuned

thx for showing HP figures
hell yeah bro this its sick
17:00 lol it's a beast

TIL this thing ran on a Toluene mixture... YIKES

Magic
sweet. is the suzuki escudo or cusco running also?

Too bad they didnt come 😓
Re upload? Why?
This appears to be a fine piece, but don't piss down my leg and claim "it's a Tacoma" LOL
Awesome!
What engine this tacoma have ?
666. Pray he doesn't crash 🙏

Hello from CO! i got a 21' taco...i'd kill to test my kansas country roads drive skills in this, maybe cut up my truck? lol i wish...maybe some day
Thats not a Tacoma, it's a go cart.
love to see what would be faster, the toyota in its prime, or kens new porsche
I’d be willing to bet the Toyota just playing around will shock a lot of people …
that thing is a monster in wolves clothing
FUCK YEAH!!! I never thought after I fell in love with this car at pikes peak and goodwood, that I would get to see it on the dyno!! 🫡
