There's a unique rally car that was raced in New Zealand in the 90s. As far as I can tell, it was only ever raced once or twice, and there's not very much information on it. But what I do recall was probably the most unusual thing I've ever heard of. It was based on a Mazda 323, though I don't know if Mazda themselves were involved. However, the driver sat where the backseats would normally be, because in front was two turbocharged rotary engines. Not just that, but the car was also SIX WHEEL DRIVE. It had a second front axle behind the first that could also steer. So therefore it was a "turbocharged twin-steer twin engine six wheel drive back-seat-driven Mazda 323 rally car", technically. Very interesting and unique car, kind of sad that there isn't much information on it.
My favorite twin engined race car would be the Fittipaldi 3200, ridiculously fast little VW Beetle with two Beetle engines in it, made lap times comparable to GT40's of the time. Wasn't reliable as was to be expected.
My favourite obscure twin engined car is the Citroen 2CV Safari. How did Citroen make a 4WD 2CV with it remaining cheap and reliable ? Simple, put another engine in the back and sell it to the public like that. They're less rare than you'd think, with some popping up in the classic car market from time to time.
Putting a second engine in your race_car is so dumb, so crazy, that's its simply amazing. There's a weird kind of fascination when something is super over-engineered and still not enough.
No multi-engine racecar list is complete without the 1966 Stein Twin-Porsche Indy car, an ambitious creation constructed by famed builder Joe Huffaker and powered by a 2.0L 911 flat-six at each end. The car DNQ'd for that year's Indianapolis 500 and never ran again. And there was also the Seat Ibiza Bimotor, which likely had a future in the WRC's Group S ranks had that ruleset not been thrown out together with Group B.
Typically they use a "collector gearbox" that puts the power onto a single shaft, which then goes to the gearbox. Mechanisms to disconnect individual engines aren't common, they would just add weight and complexity, and if one of the engines isn't running the tractor isn't competitive anyway
Austrian HillClimb racedriver Erich Edlinger is actually building a BMW i8 with 4 HP4 superbike engines! 14800rpm, 1000kg, 880hp! Do yourself a favor and Google that thing. I truly believe this 880hp awd beast with a ton of downforce will be extremely fast. Think it’s planned to do rollout next year (maybe this year already).
going by the "joining 2 engines into 1" logic, honorable mentions would be the hayabusa v8, which combines 2 inline 4 motorcycle engine and is used in cars like the ariel atom v8 and basically all rotary engines cos you can just stack them and make a longer shaft. great video anyways, love it!
Rob Dahm's got some videos of a 12-rotor engine, it was built (not by him) for marine use but it's just three quad-rotor engines somehow stuck together. I don't even think they use a Mazda rotor housing as a module, pretty sure it's all custom made.
Great video. Finally got around to watching it. Indycar had some very competitive twin engined cars like the 1946 Fageol Twin Coach Special that qualified middle of the front row using twin Offenhauser engines. And the Sampson V16 that put two miller 122 ci straight 8s together. There are other less successful U16 engine designs as well, combining two I8s in a new form. They are all a bit hard to look up but they are worth it. Thanks again for all your videos. always looking forward to more.
Some other cool multi-engined vehicles: the red porsche killer (drag bike with 4 1cyl engines), the Dolmette (drag bike with 24 engines from Dolmar chainsaws), various land speed record vehicles from the "Campbell/Segrave era", Zil 135 (military 8x8 truck), some Mini Mokes (light 4x4 using two Mini-drivetrains), Citroën 2CV 4x4 Sahara (a 2CV with two drivetrains to achieve 4x4)
There are even some roadcars with multiple engines. The 2CV and the Mini both had offroad versions with a second drivetrain in the rear. The Cizeta Moroder V16T technically used two V8s with a power take off in the middle. Then there are several engines that are derived from adding or removing cylinders to existing engines. A few famous examples. The E30 BMW M3 used the engine from the M1 with two cylinders removed, the Peugeot 907 concept had a V12 made from two Peugeot V6s, the Volvo Penta B40 (marine V8 engine) was basically two B20s (2 liter inline 4 car engines) and the Radical SR8 uses a V8 derived from 2 Hayabusa engines. And even Cosworth's DFV has an inline-4 spinoff
not sure if this counts given its not a race car, just a show car, but a twin engined car that stands out in my mind is the Hot Wheels Twin Mill, they made a full sized build of it for one of their anniversaries, and despite it being just a showcar, it does run on both of its engines, it runs on twin supercharged v8s that (supposedly) make a combined output of 1400 horsepower
Citroën produced twin-engined road/off-road 2CVs, and Club Cassis built a twin-engined the 2CV to race in the Dakar Classic. I think it was called "Bipbip".
Just when i thought you were gone forever my friend you have returned unexpected today with deep dive on multi engines racers and one of then is pikes peak escudo a legendary suv ( but also infamous meme in grand turismo community too 😂😂) so thank you for upload a new video Stijn Paspont and have good weekend bye now. P.S. Hey Stijn Paspont when are you going to do my request for unique rallycross cars + can you please check some of your comments sections in last couple videos if you can ok then see you later bye now 😊.
Seat was preparing a two-engined racecar for that monster collection rally group that got cancelled, leaving other cars like te Delta ECV permanently unraced
Tha land speed record has also seen its share of twin engine cars. The Sunbeam 1000hp 'Mystery' had 2 22.4L Sunbeam Matabele v12 aero engines. The Triplex Special had 3 27L Liberty V12 aero engines. Thunderbolt had 2 36.7L V12 aero engines. The Railton had 2 23.9L w12 engines. Then there is thrust ssc which had 2 afterburning Rolls Royce Speys out of a Phantom fighter jet
In the uk we have what is called grass track racing, the top class often use twin hyabusa engines which in a very light and small car is spectacular to say the least.
Someone made a one-engine-per-axle twin engine car on BeamNG, and it really made me appreciate the complexity of a traditional AWD system. driving the twin engine felt like if I had to pedal a bike where the pedals weren't connected to each other, for a lack of better expression.
Could you do a video on top speed record cars? I remember seeing old (pre-war?)super aerodynamic Mercedes and Auto Union cars with crazy powerful 16 cilinder engines battling it out on the Autobahn.
There is a legendary interview of Ickx that I've heard from multiple old old schoolers about rhe DAF that I have never been able to locate. Where he uses more foul language he ever had. Ickx was asked about the stage or something, when in the desert, a DAF just blasted by them and disappeared in the horizon
The first twin-engined racecar that i know about is i think this little Seat that was build for either Group B or Group S rallying. I recall it not being sucessfull at all.
Yeah, the Seat Ibiza BiMotor They couldn't figure out a 4WD system, so they just mounted a an additional engine transversily in the back that would power the rear wheels What's hilarious is that it had 2 sperate 5 speed gearboxes, for each of the engines, as well as 2 seperate tachometers It only ever ran in Spanish national rallies
There was a lack of a more detailed explanation about the position of the engines. 1 engine at the front and 1 engine at the back. or 1 engine connected to the other engine. or 2 engines side by side connected to the same gearbox.
I miss home so much and being able to just go to the pikes peak hill climb. I wish I would have been able to see it when it was mixed surface before they paved it all
There have been lots of successful twin engine drag cars, particularly in the early 60s during the NHRA Nitromethane ban.. . But... In 1966 after the release of the Oldsmobile Toronado with its 425 c.i. (7 liter) front wheel drive powertrain, there were TWO famously unsuccessful serious cars built using a pair of SUPERCHARGED Olds motors front end rear for a all wheel drive, tire smoking, out of control Funny Car that was more likely to wind up on top of the guard rail then make it down the track... look up the 'TERRIFYING TORNADO' and the 'HURST HAIRY OLDS'... Both of them had big budgets and drivers with big.....
Excellent video but Are the first 2 examples really twin engines? I don’t think so. The V12 Aston Martin was supposed to be based on 2 Ford Mondeo V6s. VW also built a twin engine Golf for Pikes Peak, and there was twin engined Mini Coopers in the ‘60s.
Whats up with ferrari logo on alfa romeos when ferrari as company didnt even exist? Did enzo ferrari made the ferrari logo in 30s while he was racing for alfa romeo and used the badge on alfa cars?
Porsche flat 12 was just two of their flat 6 engines inline with the flywheel in the centre the real multiple engine story really starts in land speed racing Mickey Thompson twin Hemi Golden rods quad engine twin engine Indy cars also were around

Yeah there's like 4 or 5 pics of it and literally only 2 seconds of video footage. A shame cause its veeeery interesting
@stijnpaspont Agreed, wish there was more info on it, it's so unique
this is insane, what the fuck
I thought this was a Joke but it's actually real
hello there
My favorite twin engined race car would be the Fittipaldi 3200, ridiculously fast little VW Beetle with two Beetle engines in it, made lap times comparable to GT40's of the time. Wasn't reliable as was to be expected.
oh yeah the little fittipaldi beetle. also has one of the best unusual air intakes. really adds to the sleeper look of it
would be if what?
You know its a good day when theres a Stijn Paspont upload 😄
Absolutely right 😊👍
I concur
My favourite obscure twin engined car is the Citroen 2CV Safari. How did Citroen make a 4WD 2CV with it remaining cheap and reliable ? What a really cool video! You know you're in for a good time when CANAM gets mentioned
ikr. the wacky 2J overshadows soooo many other cars that sometimes are even more interesting.
Putting a second engine in your race_car is so dumb, so crazy, that's its simply amazing. There's a weird kind of fascination when something is super over-engineered and still not enough.
I hear that cheeky AC5 briefing theme ;) It goes really nicely with historical cars
I subbed just because of the ace combat menu music at 1:10, then stayed till the end of the vid. Great channel, recommend.
Man the Cultus and the first Escudo was a trully monster! Also huge respect for using Ace Combat Zero OST love that game
This guy went 365 kph in a machine that offered zero protection even at low speeds. I'm wondering how his balls maanged to fit into that car
Just another day in the life of Tazio Nuvolari
there's also a twin engine cosmo used to race in australia, it's 2 13b, not 26b. Porsche also made a 917 PA powered by flat 24
A flat 24… how does that even fit?
@@Nielsblog i did a google, and it's not actually flat 24, it was flat 16, sorry

Not kidding, both of these cars were on the shortlist for this video. Together with a bunch more.
I always wonder how those 5 engined tractors work
Witchcraft
Typically they use a "collector gearbox" that puts the power onto a single shaft, which then goes to the gearbox. Mechanisms to disconnect individual engines aren't common, they would just add weight and complexity, and if one of the engines isn't running the tractor isn't competitive anyway
Take a look at the Sherman tank that had 5 Chrysler 6 cylinder engines .
They just do

Christ in heaven i want to hear that thing so bad
@@stijnpaspont we will soon ;) His former car was an BMW E30 with a Indycar engine. Also quite interesting :D
Monster Tajima's Suzuki Swift! You could make whole video about this Guy's Awesome Career.
Love that you included the legendary DAF Twin Turbo rally truck even though it isn't a race car ;)

The Hayabusa V8 out there is also combined with 2 straight 4 engines, do they count as well?

The BRM H16 can't have been that bad, as it won a race in the back of a Lotus.
Proof that with a bit of good luck and Jim Clark behind the wheel, anything is possible
Good idea on paper, catastrophically unreliable in reality
thumbs up for the ace combat 5 background OST!

Is that Ace Combat 4/5/Zero music I recognize?
Drag racing in the 70s in America had a plethora of weird multi engine vehicles.

Let's give a honorable mention to the USSR military for creating a twin-engined APC with two ordinary passenger car engines.
The Bugatti Type 45 and 47 was also special, and the of course the W-engine from the Veyron and Chiron.
The Chaparral 2J did not have "a pair of snowmobile engines" driving the fans, only one.
I miss the Escada pikss peak...❤❤
