Wow! You are the first person to actually explain how to sculpt the hair to create those authentic 50's Liz Taylor or whom ever. Others just say pin hair then brush out. I am now going to subscribe! Your hair actually looks like the people you are emulating not others that say it is and look nothing like it. Thank you...I will be using this
I know these videos are years old, but as someone with fine hair who has struggled and failed with pincurls, I have to say thank you. You have answered so many of my questions in this two part series alone.
Absolutely gorgeous!! My mother had the same color of hair as yours...and she spent about 70 years of her life doing pin curls (every night)!! This hair style is so classically beautiful, and so much more attractive imho that today's "styles"--i.e., long straight, basically almost no real style. Your style never goes out of fashion...it's beautiful.
I would like a re-do of how to apply winged eyeliner. It is something I cannot master and would like to be able to do. I get way too thick of a line and my hand is not steady enough. I just would like to see you do it again like how you did this one.
I adore pincurls oh so very very much. I learned them from that original video ages ago! And now I can just do them while watching TV at night before bed! You never disappoint, Ashley!
Beautiful brush out! I've been sleeping in pin curls for a while now and love that it lasts so much longer than a roller/hot roller set. Yet another great tutorial.
I did my first pin curl set today. It turned out really pretty. However, I didn't use any setting lotion (just water) and I attempted the standing curl on my bangs at least 8 times ( could NOT roll them and pin them...too short I guess) In the end, I just curled them with a curling iron. My hair is very long (below my chest), so it looks different than most, but I love it and will try again. The brush out was the best part. Thanks so much for your tutorial. I had so much fun doing this.
Lisa, I truly enjoy your videos..the product reviews, and of course all the hairstyles..I have been a fan for about two years now..keep up the great work and look forward to your future videos!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm a busy mama too and have REALLY thick hair. Pin curling takes me over an hour to do and this demo and the pin curl tool you showed will be a life saver......or sleep saver. Mama doesn't get to curl her hair til nearly nine at night. lol
LOVE IT SO MUCH. I recently got into these styles, so gorgeous and wearable. I have hair issues and damage and i find that these styles help you look like your HAIR is FULL AND LUX! Thanks. Cute flower.
Omg thanks so much for this. I've seen a ton of tutorials and they all show how to pin up the hair, but the brushing out process is either neglected or sped up, so when I tried it I just ended up with the frizz. Now I know how to properly do it I'm gonna try again.
I loooove your channel! So happy I found it ! I really enjoyed both tutorials for pin curling, now I have to jump into it and give it a shot ! Oh and little Ruby playing in the background... Her voice is sooooo adorable!
Oh my gosh. Thank you so much for this video. I love doing pin-curls but often just kind of unclip them and brush each pin-curl separately with a comb because the first time I ever did it I brushed them and nearly had a heart attack when my hair went POOF. Next time I do it I'll be sure to embrase the frizz and give a proper style a try.
Wet sets seem to never work on me. But my hot sets never stay throughout the rest of the day. Even when I brush against my hand for my wet sets, they still get frizzy. And usually I'll be working on the molding process for 20 minutes and it never works out! The struggle is real.
I love trying your tutorials, although as I have very thick and curly hair, my looks are always different. after this my hair looks like perfectly like Rita Hayworth waterfall waves!
The gel might be the problem. It's coating the hair strands and drying so when you brush, it's pulling the curl out too. Try a setting foam or solution.
Thanks for posting yet another great tutorial. I just got my bottle of Layrite Grooming spray today. Ive yet to perfect my pin curls on my somewhat long hair so I'm hoping for the best! And great music choice too btw :)
My hair is naturally curly and fizzy. I've always had what I called crinkles in my hair and HATED them. Now, looking at the pin curl wave they are just mini ones. I've never got into doing ANYTHING with my hair (except throwing it back in a pony tail). So I'm gonna give this a try and see if my hair likes it, especially seeing this seems like it would work with my hair and not against it. Though, seeing when I once slept in curlers I ended up looking like shirley temple I might try without any product and see what happens. Wish me luck :) (btw, awesome video. I'm a total virgin to any type of hair styling or any styles at all but loved seeing girls with the pin up look. You made it make a lot of sense. :D )
So cute! If I set my shoulder blade length hair in pin curls, with the attempt of a 40s style, should I start the pin curls below the crown in the back to avoid height there?
OMG great tutorial I was looking so long for some tips and tricks on how to do Pin Curls. I think I'll try to create the hairstyle this saturday before going out. :) Can you please do a tutorial on the hair look Gwen Stefani wears in the No Doubt "It's my life" music video? It is curly and vintagy and I would love to do this on my own hair.
Do you mind if I jump in? Sometimes my curls can get SO frizzy, as they dry from a wet set and when i brush out. I would like to suggest a de-frizz serum, at the crown & ends are where it's needed most for my curls. The good news is often natural curl texture helps the pin curl set last a little longer. :)
this video and part one are super helpful ! thanks for showing us how to do it and for making it look so easy. what I need to know is what lipstick are you wearing ? it's such a sugary shade !
Back when I was in beauty school before I perfected finger waves I would do alternating pincurls and brush them out to give the wave effect. your hair in this set is sort of like billie burke's hair in Dinner at eight
After a day's wear does your hair begin to "feather" when it loses the curl? With this new Middy cut I have I walk out the door with perfect hair, but when I come home from work it resembles the 70s...lol. Can you do a "This is what my set looks like at the end of the day" video?
I think it looks perfect. I usually do my pin curls in the morning. It takes about 15 minutes, then I have breakfast, do my makeup and by an hour they are usually set (I have really fine hair). If I'm in a hurry I cheat and use a blow-drier on the pinned curls; I cup the individual curls with my hand while I blow dry from a slight distance. It usually works quite well. :)
Do you let the Motions wrap lotion dry into your hair before you start to work with it. I would be working from just washed hair. Can't wait to try pin curls;)
I loooove your tutorials. Your are a wonderful teatcher. I was wondering what brush do you use to ágape your curls. Could you fell me the brand and type? Thanks
This is gonna sound mean but it's nice to see u struggle. I always see these gurus that never show the struggle so us novices think oh God I'm sucking so bad why can't I do it like her. But with u we see that even pros have issues. It gives us much more confidence to keep trying but to never think that it will be perfect every time.
Pin curling has been the absolute most difficult thing I’ve ever tried to learn. Maybe the fact that I have exceptionally thick hair has something to do with it (currently takes me two hours to do a set). I despise ends-they are the enemy! The manual dexterity it requires is awesome. (You should also know that I’m older, in my early sixties.) I keep plugging away at it and am determined to master it! If anyone has tips on pin curling extremely thick hair let me know!
I'm not sure what you mean 'cannot be brushed dry'? What is your hair type/texture? And how long? I strongly discourage giving up on this technique as I've never seen it not work. :)
Perfect timing! No sooner than I was done with Pt 1, this video was available! I so enjoyed these videos and the finished look came out beautifully on you! Great job :)
This was perfect! Exactly what I needed! Thank you so much. I freaked out when my hair poofed and nearly cried. It was awful. But now I know how to work the curls! Again, thank you 7
I don't know if this would work for me either, my hair naturally looks like Keri Russell's or Bernadette Peter's hair. I might try this, but in my case, would the Motions be necessary?
i really like the loose waves the girl had in the picture at the start of the video! could you please do a tutorial on that? p.s. great video, very helpful!!
nice! do you find your hair stays all day? i get so paranoid throughout the day of my hair. I've only worn it out for a few hours.(with spray ,lotion etc) do you usually need to touch-up/maintain it?
My hair is a little longer than yours (about shoulder length or a tiny bit above) but I don't have bangs, it's all the same length. Can I still do the stand up pin curls in front to get that height?
I've never had a problem with the curling and styling etc, but I find that whenever I go somewhere my curls sort of fall apart and don't stay in the shape I initially had them. Is there a way to fix that without brushing out the curls too much?
I have been trying to find a way to pin curls that will work and not end up looking like curly sue. My hair is long..like really long about breast length..can you offer any suggestions on how to make them look better or style them better??
Hmm maybe I need to cut my hair shorter to do pin curls or a wet set. Mine drops terribly, and I think it doesn't dry too well in foam rollers because there is a lot of length being rolled up in them...
It might best to consult a professional stylist about the best way and products to use to alter your hair texture while wet, instead of flat ironing first.
when I pin curled my hair (it's long and thick) I literally just used water and I love the frizzy/curliness without properly brushing it out (I guess i'm weird lol) but with just water, and slept in the set, it stays literally for about 5 days without greasing up either lol
I just tried this, I did not have success. My hair definitely cannot be brushed dry, it becomes too puffy, and no anti-frizz product that I know of works. I have a sad now because I thought I found the secret but I was wrong. I might try this on my friend, she has long thick wavy red hair, I want to make her look like Rita Hayworth.
How the hell do you make it look soeasy, hy hair is long and thinck and never seens to dry riht in this style, even after ive slept in it, so when i brish it out, just a massive puf ball!
Wow! You are the first person to actually explain how to sculpt the hair to create those authentic 50's Liz Taylor or whom ever. Others just say pin hair then brush out. I am now going to subscribe! I really appreciate this comment!!
I know these videos are years old, but as someone with fine hair who has struggled and failed with pincurls, I have to say thank you. You have answered so many of my questions in this two part series alone.
Sarah Martin I’m so glad! That’s why they’re here so it’s great that people still use them.
Hooray, someone showing a brush out on thin fine hair like mine! You've inspired me to try to brush past the frizz.
Hey, that’s the key
Absolutely gorgeous!! My mother had the same color of hair as yours...and she spent about 70 years of her life doing pin curls (every night)!! This hair style is so classically beautiful, and so much more attractive imho that today's "styles"--i.e., long straight, basically almost no real style. I love the random baby noises in the background
I would like a re-do of how to apply winged eyeliner. It is something I cannot master and would like to be able to do. I get way too thick of a line and my hand is not steady enough. I just would like to see you do it again like how you did this one.

Love it! Turned out fantastic. Will keep practicing thanks!
This tutorial is perfect for me. My hair is short, fine and with bangs like yours, so seeing the curls work so well on your hair gives me some hope!
Beautiful brush out! I've been sleeping in pin curls for a while now and love that it lasts so much longer than a roller/hot roller set. Yet another great tutorial.
Oh man, this is great! You have awakened something long forgotten, many thanks! Off to Sally's! Well, tomorrow, they're closed at the moment. lol
I did my first pin curl set today. It turned out really pretty. However, I didn't use any setting lotion (just water) and I attempted the standing curl on my bangs at least 8 times ( could NOT roll them and pin them...too short I guess) In the end, I just curled them with a curling iron. I had so much fun doing this.
My hair is currently the same length as yours. It’s also the same fine, straight texture. I am trying a pin curl set today!
Lisa, I truly enjoy your videos..the product reviews, and of course all the hairstyles..I have been a fan for about two years now..keep up the great work and look forward to your future videos!
The curls are gorgeous, you did a beautiful job.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm a busy mama too and have REALLY thick hair. Pin curling takes me over an hour to do and this demo and the pin curl tool you showed will be a life saver......or sleep saver. Mama doesn't get to curl her hair til nearly nine at night. lol
Such a great tutorial. I have long, VERY thick hair, the brushout is the hardest part for me. Love your look!
Beautiful! Looks just like Rosemary Clooney in White Christmas. Love these feminine vintage styles. Keep up the great work.
LOVE IT SO MUCH. I recently got into these styles, so gorgeous and wearable. I have hair issues and damage and i find that these styles help you look like your HAIR is FULL AND LUX! Thanks. Cute flower.
This looks gorgeous! Reminds me why pin curling is my favourite hairstyle!
Omg thanks so much for this. I've seen a ton of tutorials and they all show how to pin up the hair, but the brushing out process is either neglected or sped up, so when I tried it I just ended up with the frizz. Now I know how to properly do it I'm gonna try again.
It's very important. :) Glad to help!

Love your style of explaining things
Wet sets seem to never work on me. But my hot sets never stay throughout the rest of the day. Even when I brush against my hand for my wet sets, they still get frizzy. And usually I'll be working on the molding process for 20 minutes and it never works out! The struggle is real.

yayyy! i was so looking forward to part two! the brush out is what always what makes me nervous.
I would love to see a sock/rag curl tutorial, and other wet sets. :D
That hair color is SO pretty on you!
The gel might be the problem. It's coating the hair strands and drying so when you brush, it's pulling the curl out too. Try a setting foam or solution.

Wow. Thanks so much for sharing this. I used to pin curl and you are so right! The frizz made me wash it out. This look is great on you.
I did a recent winged liner tutorial for mature eyes but the video applies to winged liner in general as well.
Thanks for the video! Do you cover your hair with a scarf when you go out just in case the style gets blown all over the place by wind?
I also find that it's really important to comb and brush out your natural curl shape while it's wet or you get a very deformed curl.
THanks! It's a Mary Kay shade that has been discontinued. It was called Feisty.
Back when I was in beauty school before I perfected finger waves I would do alternating pincurls and brush them out to give the wave effect. your hair in this set is sort of like billie burke's hair in Dinner at eight
They have it at every drugstore and beauty supply store in my area. Where have you looked?

Kay L. Doesn’t sound mean at all. That’s why I leave it in. I want people to be realistic with their expectations.
Pin curling has been the absolute most difficult thing I’ve ever tried to learn. your videos are so inspiring and useful ❤
Mine does relax and 'feather' if I use a heated set, unfortunately. Not w/ pin curls or rollers though...?
Perfect timing! No sooner than I was done with Pt 1, this video was available! I so enjoyed these videos and the finished look came out beautifully on you! Great job :)
Hey :) So I have long hair that goes down to my waist, any tips for getting those gorgeous pin up curls?
This was perfect! Exactly what I needed! Thank you so much. I freaked out when my hair poofed and nearly cried. It was awful. But now I know how to work the curls! Again, thank you 7
Try some argan oil or a nice light pomade to tame the frizz 'after' you brush out. If this doesn't work, try larger pin curls on mostly dry hair. :)
Omg, that is so cute. I gotta try that on my hair. Love it! Thank you for the tutorial.
I don't know if this would work for me either, my hair naturally looks like Keri Russell's or Bernadette Peter's hair. I might try this, but in my case, would the Motions be necessary?

A Denman Styling Brush is my favorite.
I've never had a problem with the curling and styling etc, but I find that whenever I go somewhere my curls sort of fall apart and don't stay in the shape I initially had them. Is there a way to fix that without brushing out the curls too much?

how long would you say the curls last before they fall out on your hair?
what foundation do you use? your skin in beautiful!
also i have been using the motions hair lotion, the one in the yellow bottle.
I love your videos but I have long hair. Any suggestions?
can you do a tutorial explaining how to work with curly hair?
Not really, but these are easy to find at your local beauty supply store.
Are you using elnette hairspray? Is it as good as everyone says?
How long is it?
beautiful! I will have to try this!!
Is it possible to pin curl a (not too short) bob?
Is there some other way of getting the waves if you dont have those big clips? :)
i didnt go through all the comments so im not sure if it has been asked (probably) but can you do this on longer hair?
It might best to consult a professional stylist about the best way and products to use to alter your hair texture while wet, instead of flat ironing first.
Yey, great ! Thank you so much for the tips x
Thanks! Not new but it is a Flip camera. :)
I love your hair color !! What color is it and which brand was the color you chosen ?
Jackie May intense red copper....L’Oréal superior preference.
LisaFreemontStreet it almost looks like a brown but I love it
What was that pink pomade you used?
Thanks Laurel!
when I pin curled my hair (it's long and thick) I literally just used water and I love the frizzy/curliness without properly brushing it out (I guess i'm weird lol) but with just water, and slept in the set, it stays literally for about 5 days without greasing up either lol
i have found that more damaged hair frizzes like crazy, i recently ombre'd and came from "virgin" hair so i have defiantly noticed.
Favorite part; "I'mon spray.." Favorite southern belle in the world.
can this be done on very thin fine hair?
also what brush would you recommend using?
I just tried this, I did not have success. My hair definitely cannot be brushed dry, it becomes too puffy, and no anti-frizz product that I know of works. I have a sad now because I thought I found the secret but I was wrong. I might try this on my friend, she has long thick wavy red hair, I want to make her look like Rita Hayworth.
You work with it exactly the same way. The pin curls will re shape the natural curl.
her voice is really adorable LOL
How many clips should I get? I bought a dozen should I get a few more packs since I have long(ish) hair?
*a dozen clips :) lol
I looked everywhere and cannot find setting lotion. Any suggestions?
LOVE IT as usual!! thanks Ashley!
How the hell do you make it look soeasy, hy hair is long and thinck and never seens to dry riht in this style, even after ive slept in it, so when i brish it out, just a massive puf ball!
If your hair is very long and thick, try cutting some length off and thinning it out. :)
It says in the first video. 4 hrs to set. The rolling takes me 20 minutes or so. So 4 hrs 20 minutes
Kind of random for this video but what is your favorite red lip liner?
I like the Cherry lip liner by MAC
Hi Ruby!
A Denman styling brush. :)
Oh my God. OMIGOD, it worked! I did it! Thank you so much. My hair looks AMAZING!
