Rita Hayworth 1940’s Waves-The Authentic Way

- This is an advanced vintage style, in that it will require some pin curling skills. Once you have that down, you'll be able to knock this out easily. If pin curling is no fun for you, try one of my two roller tutorials for this style, which aren't as authentic but still have the same effect.

I've Got a Crush On You by: Anthony Warlow...the greatest thing to come out of Australia since the Pavlova. :)
Lots of licensed cosmetologists among my subscribers, always an honor! Actually, this brush was specifically recommended to me by Lauren Rennells, the author of the book Vintage Hairstyling (and also a licensed cosmetologist). I've tried just about every sort of brush and frizz is part of the process for most hair types, no matter what brush you use. But I'd welcome any recommendations. :)
Rita is my favorite actress and my beauty and hair inspiration!
This is the best tutorial of the Hayworth's waves!
Thanks so much!
I love it when you do the head bang "me" thing, you look just like her, because you live the moment and we can see the sparkle in you.
I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I tried it out yesterday and not only got a beautiful result, but it was much better for my curly, fine and somewhat damaged hair. I've done sponge rollers in the past, but this was so much less frizzy and easier to control that I'm totally sold on pin curls now.
ive seen you grow throught the years..when you first started your vintage hait tutorials!, but ive got to.say you are are your peak!!! your so good with styling and explaining your styles!!! thank you for all you have taught me!
HA! I really dislike doing pin curls. My arms and hands tire out before I am half way through! And I have thin and very straight hair like you. But, I didn't understand the layout to get the best effect and for THAT I thank you VERY much. I have been a Rita Hayworth impersonater via Burlesque since 1970! ;)
I’m watching this again 7 years later and it’s still the best tutorial for this look ❤️
That's so sweet; thank you!
Your tutorials are the BEST! Having fine, thinner hair has always been a challenge and you have inspired me to try new styles now. Thank you!
Very well done. So nice to see someone of your generation into 40's glam. Rita's hairdresser, Helen Hunt, said she used blow dry her hair, then hot iron sections and pin curl them. Helen said that her hair was so thick that it took not many pin curls to create that famous Gilda look. One of Rita's few comments on her hair was, " I arrive at the the studio, get made up and my hair is made to shine"
Love Love Love !!! My husband passed by and asked me what I was watching because I was having such a good time! I so have to try this style one day! Awesome tutorial Lisa as usual!! Oh and I looooove the slip you are wearing!
The one scene I remember from that movie is when she's getting dressed and she whips her head up and her hair just looks ridiculously pretty and I always thought I WANT THAT HAIR! I'm still pretty clumsy at pincurls but I will definitely have to try this out. Thank you my dear :D
How funny ! I just got done watching Shorty George with Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire. Not only was she a beautiful woman, but a talented dancer.
Your hair came so pretty :)
Thank you. I have wanted to see this tutorial for a while. Beautiful.
Lisa, this is the first video of you I've watched so far, but I absolutely love you! I am usually very bored with videos longer than 5 minutes, because girls just talk nonsense, but everything you said is sooooo helpful!!! You're amazing, keep doing videos, you are so good at this!!!
Supreme compliments there! Thanks so much!!
Wonderful tutorial . This style looks so beautiful on you , and really suits you . I especially love the pin curled styles that you do , as pin curling is my favorite way to set my hair . Thanks for this great video :)
This came out so beautifully.
i so agree with you about bangs not having to limit you! i recently cut short bangs again after many years, and i am rocking a marilyn-style off-the-face curl when i pincurl...no one thinks i have bangs until i wear my hair straight! Nice tutorial. I always found Rita fascinating,as her hairline (like Marilyn's) was created through electrolysis (her natural hairline was very low).i always envied hers and Marilyn's widow's peaks, especially because my hair, like yours, is very fine.
After 3 tries, I think I finally got this right! Thanks Lisa! Can't wait to rock it at Dita Von Teese's show tonight! :)
I caught a few of your videos for the first time this evening. Can't wait to try out some of these vintage styles featured in your tutorials. Thanks!
The layered cut best suited to this kind of style is called a 'Middy' - it's essentially same-length layers all over the head. LisaFreemontStreet has a video ('Me and my Middy') that spells out what you should ask your hairdresser to do, even if they are not familiar with vintage cuts :-)
so gorgeous. you don't know how much I appreciate this video.
This look I think is by far the most flatteringly beautiful on you. You looked like you just stepped off the set of a film shoot. I am addicted to your videos. I am off to attempt pin curls with my pin curl tool. (not got to grips with it yet) but i'm sure with practise I will. Sending love from the U.K. Oh and the colour on you here is just divine! I've just switched from my purple back to my natural blonde XXX
Thanks so much for all the kind words. I really like my hair this length as well and can't wait for it to reach that point again. haha
Great tutorial! The result looks so gorgeous. I'll be trying this on myself, although I have no layers in my hair so won't expect the same effect. Thank you so much for taking the time to recreate the actual technique!
Love this tutorial. I've been looking for an authentic Gilda tutorial for years! Liked and favourited!
Yes I love it! The style is beautiful on you. I have naturally curly hair and I might just try to do this. It would be interesting to see the results.
Have just tired this set out and am sitting here watching Gilda - can't wait to see if I am transformed into Rita when it is dry :D Thank you!
I was so excited for this, I literally kicked up my heels and sat back to enjoy! :D You did an amazing job on this! I really need to get myself a Denman brush...I should be ashamed! lol
thank you so much for doing these videos. I learned really a lot from you. I could never really figure out what works best for my hair because my hair doesnt really hold curls but since i learned from you how to do pin curling im so happy! thanks a lot!! :)
Not bad. I am always looking for a half way authentic attemps for old hair styles.... keep on that work :)
Gorgeous!!! Very authentic looking!
Thank you so much for all you do!!
Hi there. It's basically the same length all over. So the top layers are the same length as the bottom layers and this causes a u shape layering at the back.
I wish I could wake up every morning looking like this! :) many thx!
I do believe this is my favourite style on you!
I've always cut it in the femme fatale Middy cut (it's the longest version of the Middy) and I got amazing results in those styles!
Try the style using rollers, like in the linked videos in the info box, first. This option is more advanced. :)
It' my favorite too. Thanks Shannon!
You are the best and I ADORE your channel! Sending you lots of love from Hamburg. Xx
Glad you enjoyed it! I thought it seemed very tedious upon playback so that makes me feel better. :)
In love!!!! Man I can't wait for my hair to grow out longer!!!!
Gorgeous! absolutly stunning look on both you and rita :D
Beautiful. This is my fave video of yours!
Oh, lovely video, Ashley!
Yes! Finally! Thank you! I love Rita and this is gorgeous!
Yes, ma'am, I believe so. :) Well, I just googled the name along with the name of the book and another blog said it came from that book.
As a stylist since 16 years old and taught old school way. Any truly authentic curls permanently back then were done wth a wave machine which looked like an octopus!! Sponge curlers are the best. I still use them
Well, Rita didn't need the permanent wave machine, thankfully, since her hair was already curly. Helen Hunt, her stylist, used a very specific pin curl pattern to tame and reshape her curls into the waves we see on film.
One of my all time favourite films, thank you this is a great tutorial :-) xx
That hairstyle is so beautiful and classic! My hair is almost exactly the same as yours (stick straight and thin) and no matter what I do, it always looks more Lauren Bacall than Rita Hayworth. Oh well :p Thanks for another great tutorial!
Nothing wrong with Lauren! ;-) Thank, toots!
Got the pin curls in. Hoping for the best! ;-D Love the style!!
absolutely gorgeous! As always.
I love that hair color! Wich tone is that? Love your videos! Here in spain is dificult to find theese types of tutorials!
Love your hair color here. This deeper red gives a youthful and sexy look. I want this hair color now :(
Okay totally fangirling that your even speaking a word to me. Lol sorry if that came off snobbish didn't mean to come off like that. I just said that because when I use my denman I feel like I loose the curl too much.
Flip pin’ gorgeous!!
See the tutorials I linked in the Info Box for my pin curling videos. My hair was much shorter then. :) Also see my 'Gentlemen Prefer Marilyn' video. :)
Thanks I love that one too. :) It was shorter and had a little more lift in front; I've done a tutorial for that one too. :)
If you’ve got super long hair you have to overdirect the pin curls also. It helps :)
I love this! I gotta do this on my hair!
It goes without saying that you did this style just beautifully! Yay for achieving the classic "skip wave," as vintage hairstyling books call that pattern of pincurls in alternating directions. I wondered if it was difficult, but you've given me the confidence to go ahead!
But I also couldn't stop wondering if as I watched, what eyeshadow are you wearing here? Looks lovely and elegant! Some kind of bluish steel gray, I think?
You can see the palette and the general color combination inmy Pin Up Makeup tutorial, the Eyes video. And thank you.
@@LisaFreemontStreet Thanks for letting me know!
beautiful!
Where did she disappear too???? 😢
So pretty, I love it ... especially when you did the flip! :)
That means it's a very clean part that is clearly visible.:)
You look beautiful! Sorry, what does having a 'hard part' mean?
Hi Lisa! Love your tutorials and all things vintage 40's. Can you tell me what length my bangs should be to get an accurate Rita Hayworth in Gilda style?? My layers are about 10inches right now (don't know if that is too short), but can't figure out what length to make the bangs so the style doesn't come out droopy. xxx
Sensational!
Oil would love to see a draw my life from you! Thanks I'm a huge fan!!
How often a day are you told you resemble Skylar White? I love your tutorials. Subscribed!
Gorgeous!!
First, i'd like to tell you that i love your tutorial, i've been looking for this tutorial for soooo long, and every tutorials i found wasn't as close as your. Then i'd like to ask you wish kind of product will you recommend to make your hair shinny and kinda wet without looking greasy ? thank's in advance for you reply and wish you the best for the future.
Thanks Lolita!
Also the back of the head should be alternating direction left right and so on, like the Nys state board set ! :)
This video was more about the authentic method of getting the waves, not the actual setting pattern that was used. I try to make these videos reachable for the average home hair stylist so I was not going to intimidate them by alternating the curls at the back of the head since that can be very difficult on oneself. ♥️
So inspiring! Thanks for making this!
Really pretty
What a great video!!
Thanks lady!
Also...my hair is about halfway down my back (to the clasp of my bra, approximately) but I need to cut quite a lot off since I haven't been taking care of it properly. You mentioned that most women in the 1940s had layers to get that "waterfall flow" to their hair styles so I was wondering how you'd recommend that I cut it to get this?
This set reminded me more of Gene Tierney in Laura.
I have two questions. First do you use Lottabody and the foam wrap lotion together? And also I don't have bangs so should I just set my front in the same pattern and brush out as you showed it? My front section is shorter than the rest. Thank you x
Thanks for this!!
Stunning!!!
I'll have to google that myself. :) Is it the diagram in the '1940's hairstyles' book?
Amazing!
Love it!!! thanks for sharing
My thing is that when I set my hair from a 'wet' set, due to my natural curl...well...I wind up looking like Rosanna Rosanna-danna. It isn't pretty. And I brush and brush and it only tames minimally. Still, this is awesome.
ok..that's it..I'm hooked. .totally subscribing! !!
+Elizabeth Eagle Yay! Welcome!
Thank you. I went to sally beauty supply to pick up some of your favorite products and the girls at the counter said they loved my hair..and wondered if I was a stylist. I said, Nope...this is from my newest youtube teacher! They said, "youtube!? They spend a whole weak on pincurls at the Academy! You did that from watching youtube!"...lol. What can I say my instructor fills me with confidence, tools and product knowledge! You rock!
Thanks, I'm enjoying it. :)
Well, I'm a guy that came here because I was considering being Rita Hayworth for Halloween but I'm in way over my head with this hahaha. I guess this costume idea is going out the window. Very nice video though
haha...it's not that hard...do it!
Fantastic tutorial! ♥♥♥
Thanks!!
Hi Lisa! When you use perm rods do you sleep in them? Can you do a tutorial on a wet set again? Thanks!
+Clare Alice Dane I did another wet set tutorial today...just the brush out part. I have done a lot of them though...so make sure that you check my past videos. I do not typically sleep in my perming rods, no.
You look so much like her! :)
thank you for doing this video:) I just wanted to ask do you have to have bangs to do all the 40s/50s hair styles?
terry chalmers no definitely not✨👌🏽
I think it works with any bang length, really. :)
thanks for the video! my hair is extremely long and thick. I have decided to cut some length off but was wondering the best length and style to tell a hairdresser so I'm kinda flexible.any recommendations?
Hi! I actually feel that ten inches is ideal for longer vintage styles . That means all the layers will be the same length and will fall in a u-shape at the back.
P.s. My hair is about that length in this video
I would be eternally grateful if you made another Gilda hair tutorial with foam rollers!
Please cater to the lazy gals haha
Question: when you explain the setting pattern you first say that the heavy side is first forward facing, then back, then forward. The second time you say it's back, then forward, then back. Just wondering which way it is actually :)
If I msspoke, I apologize. On the heavy side of the part, it should be the row closest to the part is facing forward and the one beneath it is facing back. Alternate from there.
yes, thank you!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!😍😍😍❤❤❤💙💙💙😍😍😍
ha! Thanks!
If I have curly hair do I need to use lottabody as a setting lotion to do this hairstyle ?
Sorry I missed this! Maybe not but s mousse will help sculpt the curls.
Nice, very pretty..no hairspray in the 40s??
Not really. The setting lotions held it. But they did use a spray lacquer for shine sometimes.
