I love your videos but as others mentioned too, shaking is very helpful. I can release stress within seconds by shaking. And Flowing Breeze Swaying Willow as taught by Anthony Korahais (Flowing Zen) is completely safe spontaneous qigong. That being said, there is also very unsafe spontaneous qigong out there but it’s not simple shaking… thank you for your videos.
I've done a lot of spontaneous movement practices. I have found they have both benefits and potential dangers. The main dangers come from forcing movement rather than relaxing in the movements, and from not grounding before and after the practice in more slow, gentle, or still postures. Also doing the movements for too long can be disturbing. That said, I have found profound benefits from ecstatic dance, spontaneous moving and shaking, and so on in the release of trauma, in becoming more spontaneous, and developing flow in life. In the system of the late Gabrielle Roth, the shaking is the rhythm of "chaos" and you don't necessarily want to bring too much chaos into your life, but it can be useful when skillfully applied so you can both learn to surf the chaos of external events as well as break up stuck patterns.
The spontaneous movements you speak of usually rise from your lower chakras. They were intended to be used during combat. Some of the drunken masters of Kung Fu use them to go from a calm state into a vicious snake like attacks. Using lower chakra power without releasing it properly can be dangerous over time especially if you do not know what you are doing. It is like when you stop yourself from sneezing and the but you end up sneezing internally... that could cause inner wounds in your body that as a youngster may not be visible or cause that much damage but as a senior or someone with a more frail constitution could really hurt them.
In most cases to avoid beginners hurting themselves one should only activate the crown, third eye, nose and work on feeling and hearing your own heart beat without activating the heart Chakra itself. Keep your lower Chakras closed unless you plan on sparring or board breaking because they are a double edged sword for beginners.
This is very fear based. Fear is much more dangerous to health than spontaneous movements, which can be very healing and train intuition. When we love what we do it opens the heart chakra, which is very beneficial for us.
I have been doing this practice for 26 years.......heart fire is strong! Yes, balance those fires, and by ALL means, follow the "rules", until you don't need to. :D
Greetings I do not so much agree with your statement. At first I thought you would talk about an iron shirt chi kung which is indeed not suitable for everyone because of the great pressures. But shaking? It is clear that it comes as part of a whole system when in 1 exercise or two the body is shaken, this shaking is intended for the first stage of the practice and it is actually to shake off negative energies. Maybe you know a practice that is all about it, i do not know, I practice for years and it is part of a useful routine. Thank you🙏
I've found that shaking is ok if it has a clear intention behind it. Which is generally to release excess stress form the body or mind. I also only shake the arms or legs and not the central body, so it's kept in a calm state even with the shaking, and to have a sense of rhythm as one shakes
Yes, I agree. Shaking and bouncing are great. It's the spontaneous practice without guidance that was 'trending' at the time the video was made that I was referring to. 🙂 Thanks for watching and commenting!
I like a lot of your videos but I think this one might be based on personal opinion and preference, not on what can be truly effective and useful for different people and situations. I have found bouncing and shaking to be very effective and valuable while undergoing an intense kundalini awakening. I use it daily and have for the past two years to open my meridians and channels and to clear out lower vibrational, stuck energy.
Relatively new to qigong, been meditating vipassana for some time. I believe it is the intention that can cause issues when moving spontaneously. For me, during spontaneous qigong, my intention is NOT to release tension stress or baggage, that’s what the dynamic exercises are for. My intention is simply to listen to what my body is telling me, not change or try to let go of anything. I’ll add that I never move a lot while doing this, normally very gentle, relaxed movements that allow me to maintain awareness. I think this is the key to getting the most out of it.
i've been practicing spontaneous natural flow qigong as well as Wuji Hundun Qigong w/ spontaneous expression for over 15 years. OMG i've been dying the whole time! the most healing, mystical, and powerful techniques are, in fact, not techniques at all, but are naturally arising expressions born of a deep abiding surrender. you will never micro-manage your way to the highest states. sadly, i have met certified tai chi masters who believe as you do, yet one class with our group was the first time they ever had a direct experience of real qi flow.
ah your talking about wong kiew kits system which is all about feeling this, I have done this and achieved this it foes feel fantastic mind. But my stle is now zhineng and its a no no like you say ,good luck to you
didnt know this. i thought of shaking as a good thing to relieve tension and stress cause i saw some people explaining that animals also shake their stress off. and i always felt very calm after a heavy randomly shaking. shouting etc. session. i did this intuitively for myself. i am always feeling cold and thats the only thing that gets me heated up quickly and nicely. but if its not good - do you have any suggestions which exercises could do the same so i can try them?
Hi! I'd rather say, don't practice spontaneous qigong without having learned from qualified teachers or systems. After having learned both some standard forms and spontaneous qigong (taijiwuxigong), I can't say I recognize your assertion about the heart qi, but maybe this is a potential danger for some if done uncorrectly or without pre excercices which should include in the session. In the form I've been doing, the energy is always directed outwards because of the powerful outflushing of stagnant or "bad" chi, thus giving a tremendeous feeling of relief and of "detoxification" of the whole energy system. So in my experience, spontaneous qigong always balances and relieves the feeling of built up energy OR stagnant energy anywhere, because it more effectively opens up energy blockages wherever they may be, through the spontaneous movement. The result is always (for me) a perfect balance of calmness and better flowing/more energy. Spontaneous qigong seems to do this infinitely more effective than any other form I've tried. I understand the precaution and skeptisicm, but please don't reject the form all together, because it truly has enormous potential for self healing. Anyways, sorry if clumsily formulated (afterall I'm not a teacher or anything) and I'm looking forward to explore your videos :)
I think it is also fair to mention that there are alchemical types of spontaneous movement methods that are practiced in Daoist Neidan lineages. These differ from the mind based spontaneous qigong that work with post heaven Qi. Instead, the method coaxes the yuan qi into action(through the extraordinary channels) and can actually quell or raise heart fire based on what the body needs(not just the heart but also other organs/elements). This method is completely safe BUT needs to first be learned properly from a master in the lineage. Otherwise it devolves into the exact same practice you’re talking about in this video.
I don't really understand the concern here. In my experience spontaneous movement is something I try to embrace and it feels good for me. Dancing is a form of spontaneous movement and I think it's great for the heart.
You are absolutely right, Spontaneous Qigong is as GOOD as ANY Qigong. YOU need to understand and guide by an EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTOR while practicing Spontaneous Qigong.
Unfortunately the audio levels are not consistent from one lesson to the other. On the average, they are generally low. I suggest before compiling the videos, adjust the audio output level so that the audio gain is consistent throughout your series and at a level which does not require the viewer to have to raise the volume level pass the halfway mark. Thank you for sharing these lessons in order to increase the health and wellbeing of our planet. When you consider the amount of work we are task to do to elevate our own existence, these exercises are essential.
Wherever you are shooting your videos is visually stunning...Beautiful landscape...I like swinging arms, Jade Phoenix Rising, arms back and forth and heels go up when I swing up and heels go back on ground when arms swing done...It is supposed be good for heart fire...I have spleen deficiency and "plum pit" Chi, when phlegm....my old.. acupuncturist said....I am trying to get back into a regular practice, it is hard and I feel I have to do a rigid set or do hours of it...It is a mental block...Thanks
I have practiced spontaneous qigong and got qi deviation from it I still have it for 3 years. It's terrible. What you said is a little wrong,When doing spontaneous qigong the movement happens on it own so you are not control. I agree with you you should not do spontaneous qigong.
The 'bouncing on the toes/shake the body' part of the 8 brocades is often demonstrated in a vigorous motion (like what you are describing). Is this OK, in your opinion?
Great question! Bouncing in 8 Brocades is different from "spontaneous qigong." After reviewing the video I realized that I should have demonstrated spontaneous qigong a little more clearly. Bouncing is rhythmic, and that is very good at revitalizing the qi and moving the blood and lymphatic fluid and warming up the joints. Bouncing and swinging is great for dissipating stagnant and excessive qi that builds up during practice as well. So it's quite different than spontaneous. Hope that makes sense :)
If one follow the Buddhist precepts, spontaneous movement is very good. In Japan the great Master Haruchika Noguchi taught it and it is a great resource for humanity. It's name is Seitai and Katsugen Undo, but it's not a question of only shaking or doing clownesque movements. So if you are rightful it's ok, but if you are not, and your behavior is chaotic or irresponsible, then it is very dangerous.
You know you're right. Shaking feels like a very forced movement. Sometimes sudden arm swinging was causing me pain so I'd follow certain movements but skip sudden movements as they were causing pain of old physical trauma. I saw it at Yoqui. They have great moves but a little too Americanized.

Hi. What you are referring to is not actual spontaneous Qigong (SQ). It is how ever the most command misinterpretation of what SQ is. And it does not help that some very popular Qigong teacher in the US teach what you are talking about as SQ. I agree with you that SQ should not be attempted without the guidance of a qualified teacher, which is rare to say the least. It also can be dangerous for certain people. That is why a student is not allowed to practice on their own at first, until the teacher is satisfied there are no risk for the student. SQ should be considered as an advanced level training and not be attempted by a beginner. There are 2 very simple reason for that. 1 To really do SQ, you need to get into the state of tranquility. Get into a meditative state of mind when the chatter is at a minimum, even better no to think at all, just observe quietly. 2 You need to have developed enough Qi for it to manifest the movements. If you can't feel the Qi circulating in your body during standing or moving Qigong, you are not ready to practice SQ. The Shaking you are talking about can be present for some people during practice but usually does not last more then a few sessions. It is a sign of stagnation being removes and should not be considered a goal of SQ. Most SQ video on UA-cam demonstrate what I would call a "free form" Qigong, where people are simple feeling a little bit of Qi and move around doing movement they know in a random pattern. This is not SQ. Here is a video of me doing some SQ. The important is to notice the state in which I am as the movements will be different for everyone, hence the SQ name. If the tranquility of the mind is not achieved and the Qi is not strong enough, you are not ready to do SQ. ua-cam.com/video/6qZNm3sWZ-E/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing your experience! I don't think there is any major problems practicing spontaneous qi gong if a well qualified teacher can guide someone. The reason I made this video is because I have had several people ask me about this. They were taught the style with a lot of spastic and "releasing" movements which, as I mentioned in the video, is unbalancing. That is mainly what I am referring to. You are right, most people are not practicing true Spontaneous Qi Gong. However, if someone were to ask me, I would not encourage them to start learning it. There are many other forms that are health promoting and calming (which is what I like to focus on). Thanks again for sharing your experience!🙂
👍👍👍What you say is true. As a child I have seen spontaneous movements like those by priests walking noisily on fire. Even as an innocent youngster, the adults thought it amazing. But the random shakings & shrieks all look creepily evil to us kids. So, no thanks. Calm rhythmic movements, anytime. Where do you teach, by the way?
Hey it's interesting and weird cause I naturally do that type of thing, even before knowing about qigong. It's weird to admit, because indeed it seems creepy haha but I do it when I'm quite upset so I think you might be right about heat in the heart. Didn't know this had a name but you learn something new everyday
Hopefully it was helpful for you. As mentioned, it may be fine if it is part of a larger practice or under guidance. My intention is just to give information so we can all find our way to health and vitality. 😀
Oh no... I love your videos and... I totally disagree. This is just an opinion, and giving power to an old kind of authoritarian "fear" energy which is the reason I have left many practitioners of "Traditional Chinese Medicine" -- which was, after all, just a kind of old boys' club. It was created mostly by men, who wanted to take over the more organic and natural practices that were already being done by women, so they organized and regulated them with a bunch of rules and warnings. Kind of like copyrighting something and claiming authority over people's bodies. Like a church claiming to have the right rules that tell people (especially those spontaneously dancing women!) they "shouldn’t" do healings or have their own relationship with Source energy. I have had amazing, incredible, extraordinary healings through styles of qi gong that you are warning against. "Don't move spontaneously, it might be dangerous!." It's kind of chauvinistic. And I know this isn’t your intention, and that you are completely sincere and generous in your teaching. And also there is a kind of pattern recognition and self-proving bias in all perception, like placebos and nocebos, so I'm sure you've gathered evidence for this absurd "warning." In love and offered in service to anyone who might shut down their direct exploration of their own chi because of this video.
I practiced this thing called blade sword finger and for 3 weeks where the energy entered my hand it feels like its wounded energetically. Every now and again I feels like energy is either escaping or healing from the process.
I have been developing a technique for a year to expel nervous tension, I shout really loud and sings in a way almost uncontrollable, but I have this feeling that his keep the fires of the heart and the instability that I have! I have unpleasant corporels feeling hard to describe and impatience level that is dangerous for my health. headache di left side what should I do I'm desperate! It’s not possible to keep this inside IMPOSSIBLE!
Serious question here...if I am doing standing chi kung and i start shaking or vibrating, are you saying this should be suppressed? I always thought that was the body adjusting the tension levels and position. Or are you talking about something different?
Do you have qi gong for hiatus hernia. And another one. I practise yoga.and Jeffs qi gong Have to reduce yoga .until operation.that I am trying To avoid
Well then you have never truly had chi flow through your body because guess what? It IS spontaneous! And you go through all different kinds of movements and intensities.
Interesting. Does that mean that the mind is 'located' in the heart system in TCM or does the heart system just affect the mind more than other organ systems?
Now I´m quite confused. My problem is, that as an Introvert I work in an openspace office, I have lot of deadlines and soemtimes the job is really stresfull. And what´s make it worse I´m really bad at expressing and releasing this negative energy and I get really tense. And with increasing stress, my mind just comes with these negative worries and thoughts which really makes a bad cycle. I tried yoga, experienced with chigong, but what I found works best is TRE (tension release exercises) and Osho dynamic kundalini meditation. I just express this energy and feel much at ease and with more energy. Both of these techniques are based on shaking and vibrating and osho also on chaoticm ovements. But here you suggest against it. Maybe you could give me some advice?
Releasing tension when you are an introvert and you work in an open space is a great idea. You have obviously found what works for you while under good guidance, and that's great! TRE and Osho are systems that have the vibrating and chaotic movements in them, but as I understand, you practice many other techniques as well. Spontaneous qigong that is not supervised is what I am mainly referring to in this video. I would continue as long as you keep feeling the benefit from your practice and your teacher(s) are keeping an eye on your progress! Thanks for sharing your experience! ~Jeff🙂
Shaking can arise to help trauma disapate from the body's tissues. Shaking helps the nervous system recalibrate. Sometimes if you were not able to allow this process to happen and complete, the tension of holding the trauma remains. It's like when a bird flys into a window. It shakes it of an flys away. If it feels like your body needs to do this, then go with the flow. Allow the shake. As long as there is peace that follows. This is my view as a somatic Therapist. Perhaps what you are saying is it needs to be done outside of qigong practice and on it's own? Very interested in your thoughts. There is a great book that explains this trauma release method called Waking the Tiger.
Shaking does not have to be spontaneous. Shaking is powerful medicine when done right. And makes for more athleticism. Wu wei requires going with the flow. Not sure about spontaneous shaking though.
I have just realised I have been doing what they call 'trembling horse' and I am glad you pointed out this because first of all it felt a bit silly doing it, but also I am not sure what the benefit is for the meridians or the organs in the body, so I think I won't be doing that one again. Thank you again Jeffrey.
Funny you showed Elaine’s dancing in Steinfeld’s episode, because as you illustrated in your video, some people, when they dance, it’s not only spontaneous qigong, it’s spontaneous combustion.😝🤪
Wow..so I have been doing a form of spontaneous qigong under a teacher every day for over a year. The way it's done is excellent and has very fast results. However I know quite a few people don't understand that it can actually be one of the safest AND even reverse qi deviations by doing it. Not to mention circulating the qi really well. I do think tho that you shouldn't just practice something like this withought knowing what you're doing. Would you agree that spontaneous qigong is a different form of moving qi? I gotta say I am curious why do you say it affects the heart, that may be true if you just randomly jump into it with nothing else I think.
There are siffierent versions of spontanious chi kung... it seems to me you do not know all of them...while what you say could be true for some of them... not all of them involve violent shaking..
Thank you Jeff...is this comparable to shaking the tree to relieve stress tension and stuck patterns? To be clear...should a person also avoid shaking the tree?
This idea refers to practices that are not part of a routine, or under guidance. At the time of making this video there was a trend of people practicing only spontaneous movement for an extended amount of time with no guidance. That is what I was referring to. If spontaneous movement is part of a routine or under the guidance of an instructor it's fine and it can be very helpful.
You need to get into a deep meditative state and let the sensation of Qi develop in your body before you can reach the proper level to do spontaneous Qigong. Once the base is developed, you will feel the movement of Qi creating the physical movement and you sit back and watch it unfold. It is not just moving around or improvisation of movement.
Unfortunately I don't have any routines on UA-cam, but we did just add one to the "Communi Qi" site that's perfect for anti aging called the Water Element and Kidney Qigong qigongforvitality.vhx.tv/long-practices/videos/kidney-and-water-element-qigong You could also practice this routine ua-cam.com/video/CCicH-iz1oU/v-deo.html and add extra horse stance to it. I would start off with 5 minutes and increase it over time. Horse stance is extremely helpful in building up the kidney energy! Hope this helps!
Huh i dont think that monkesy or tigers, etc eever even think about how redicilous they looks , i mean, when they shake theirs body . To me all thing looks naturaly ❤ anyway i will pretend i didnt saw this vid, and keep likeing ur others vids 😅😅❤
"Shaking" is OK, and you are right, it can help to stimulated and invigorate qi circulation. But shaking, bouncing, and swinging is not the same as "spontaneous." As I mentioned in another comment, I should have demonstrated spontaneous practice a little more clearly. It is very random and spastic which is not ideal long term. Hope that makes sense!
@@ThinkVitalityQiGong yes, thankyou for that. i have watched many videos and chosen yours and one other person's to follow - i have spinal and neck damage and am in physiotherapy for it. One thing i DO NOT want to do is jolt or shake my body randomly -becaue it causes pain. That being said, there are tension release moves from the shoulders etc that help and do not bother me
Yes 8 Brocade is a great routine! It was initially created to help soldiers keep strong, limber, and healthy, so it is a little more invigorating than other forms of qigong. You can compliment it with a more "Yin" routine if it is too invigorating. We actually just added 8 Brocades to our library last month. Thanks for your comment!
Most people shouldn’t worry too much. 90 % of Chi Kung /Nei Kung is heavily watered down. If you’re fortunate to have a BONAFIDE Grand Master.. you understand the whole picture. There are many things to learn in internal .. learning how to balance your fire and water … semen retention and so on. However.. FA JIN is VERY IMPORTANT when you know what you doing. Especially when training Internal Palm systems … but like I said 90% of all internal arts are all watered down .. and even if you find a bonafide grand master .. he may NOT teach you the real methods.. but rather milk you for all your money.

I agree 100% I've read a post about this and it said that spontaneous Qi Gong would be not learn by people who have psychologic problem
Thank you
Thank you for your advice! I’m just starting qigong and I’m grateful for your explanation!😊
I don't always twist and shout during qigong, but when I do it's Beatles style
Love the Seinfeld reference. Always love your practices and have been following for years.

Wow this was very helpful.
Wonderful!
Thank you so much, I always enjoy your videos.
You're very welcome, thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for showing...
Wow same honestly felt guilty about it
And also there is a kind of pattern recognition and self-proving bias in all perception, like placebos and nocebos, so I'm sure you've gathered evidence for this absurd "warning."
In love and offered in service to anyone who might shut down their direct exploration of their own chi because of this video.
I practiced this thing called blade sword finger and for 3 weeks where the energy entered my hand it feels like its wounded energetically. Every now and again I feels like energy is either escaping or healing from the process.
It might be doing what it needs to, and when, to balance you.
What is the objective of shaking, if you don't mind me asking? To release the excess qi or to spread the qi evenly throughout the body?
Those always feel weird to me. I don't understand it. Thanks for the input.
My pleasure! I think a lot of people feel strange after doing too much of it, so you are not alone 🙃
Interesting! Thank you for your advice.
My pleasure!
Or are you talking about something different?
thanks!
Do you have qi gong for hiatus hernia. And another one.
I practise yoga.and Jeffs qi gong
Have to reduce yoga .until operation.that I am trying
To avoid
Thank you for this advice, very appreciated :)))
is it ok to do qi gong standing and your palm face up to collect qi?
I think that's how I dance 😁
Does this apply to the exercise, "Shake the Tree"?
This idea refers to practices that are not part of a routine, or under guidance. At the time of making this video there was a trend of people practicing only spontaneous movement for an extended amount of time with no guidance.
That is what I was referring to.
If spontaneous movement is part of a routine or under the guidance of an instructor it's fine and it can be very helpful.
What’s the difference between spontaneous wi gong and free flow dancing?
You need to get into a deep meditative state and let the sensation of Qi develop in your body before you can reach the proper level to do spontaneous Qigong. Once the base is developed, you will feel the movement of Qi creating the physical movement and you sit back and watch it unfold. It is not just moving around or improvisation of movement.
Jeffery do you have a routine for slowing the aging process? Thanks
Unfortunately I don't have any routines on UA-cam, but we did just add one to the "Communi Qi" site that's perfect for anti aging called the Water Element and Kidney Qigong
qigongforvitality.vhx.tv/long-practices/videos/kidney-and-water-element-qigong
You could also practice this routine ua-cam.com/video/CCicH-iz1oU/v-deo.html and add extra horse stance to it.
I always thought the surfing was just a stage in the process, chi will enter everywhere given time, but the shaking is just a symptom of blockages.
That being said, there are tension release moves from the shoulders etc that help and do not bother me
Knowledgeable...Thank u
... I am Practicing eight broadcast qi qong ....Is it Good....
Good advice. I think your studio setting would have been better for this video.
reeling in the silk.....taught by medical doctor Great Grand Master. Now I am confused
be confused, spontaneous qg is not for beginners. keep up with your teacher who is also a doctor. is enough
You are generalising!
