Biography:
Like many great Southern storytellers, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers has fallen in love with a place. The people, landmarks and legendary moments from his childhood home of Lawrence County, Kentucky, populate the 10 songs in his formidable debut, Purgatory, an album that’s simultaneously modern and as ancient as the Appalachian Mountains in which events unfold.
The album, co-produced by Grammy Award winners Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, is a semiautobiographical sketch of Childers’ growth from wayward youth to happily married man, told in the tradition of a Southern gothic novel with a classic noir antihero who may just be irredeemable. Purgatory is a chiaroscuro painting with darkness framing light in high relief. There’s catharsis and redemption. Sin and temptation. Murder and deceit. Demons and angels. Moonshine and cocaine. So much moonshine and cocaine. All played out on the large, colorful canvas of Eastern Kentucky.
Childers had been searching for a certain sound for his debut album for years as he honed his craft, and was finding it elusive when his friend, drummer Miles Miller, introduced him to Simpson, the Grammy Award-winning musician and fellow Kentuckian. Childers sent Simpson a group of his songs, then went to visit him in Nashville.
“And he said, ‘There’s this sound. I know what you’re trying to get at, the mountain sound,’” Childers recalled. “’So I asked, ‘What are you doing?’”
Intrigued, Simpson enlisted the aid of Ferguson, the Grammy Award winning sound engineer. They assembled a band that included multi-instrumentalists Stuart Duncan, Michael J. Henderson and Russ Pahl, bassist Michael Bub and Miller on drums, of course, and helped Childers make a debut album of consequence that announces an authentic new voice.
“I was writing an album about being in the mountains,” Childers said. “I wanted it to have that gritty mountain sound. But at the same time, I wanted a more modern version of it that a younger generation can listen to-the people I grew up with, something I’d want to listen to.”

He should have won a Grammy just for writing this song.
Yeah not even aying it either he's so talented...and on a napkin too! With 💩 on it!
I don’t think very many people know what it’s like to be digging all day just for their friend to find a smoker 1ft from where you broke ground
Right!!! This is my favorite song. So good
Don't need a Grammy to be a true musician. . .
Out of all the songs he's wrote and as an avid fan. It's my least favorite song. The Grammy song I would personally give to, Nose to the grindstone.
I’m an old school rap head from nyc and never liked country except a few. Johnny cash and Merle haggard and the like. This dude is the real deal, you can feel his voice like cash, cobain, and biggie. Lesson here is to always give someone a shot. Never judge a book by its cover. I thought this would be another pop country boring ass CMA type, I was wrong. Props to this dude.
I totally agree!
Cody jinks is another one
@The Thin Red Line i definitely recommend colter wall!!
Tyler Childers is so good and raw man. I am a huge fan. I also dig this guy Brett McDaniel ua-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/v-deo.html . He isn't well known and I think he plays out of The Alabama area. So good man. So much talent out there. We need more music on the radio like Childers'
SPOT ON. A true Musician. One of the Greats of our time, IMO.
Them eastern Kentucky boys are saving country music
Hell yeah they are!! they are showing true grit god damit!!!
Canadian neighbors are doing well to listen to colter wall
Tyler Tackette and they know what a Clovis point is or at least Tylor does
I got chills.
Cockhardrock 8888 no comparison
Pills ...powder ...corn liquor... and women ....ive been clean 2 years from the first three...this man and many others are now my drug of choice...hes in a class all alone
Cars are pushing 650+ horsepower out of the factory, whiskeys making a comeback and this guys fingers are making a southern twang the world has never seen...and in good time, lifes good
Absofuck
Absofuckinlutely right about all the above!
As a black man. I have the upmost respect for this man's music.
Glass is half full tonight.!
He needs to cover Where Did You Sleep Last Night ASAP!!!!
Glad I’m not the only one that thought of this! Please tell me you’ve seen Kurt Cobain’s cover
He might do bill monroes version instead
It’s called the pines but driving nails in my coffin would be good too
The way he contorts when he sings “corn liquor”, quakes my soul. This man is putting it out there in a major way. He’s a once in a generation, maybe even more type of talent.
Gives me goose bumps every time I hear it!
Corn liquorrr and woman are the culprits to blaamee
Tyler Childers is so good and raw man. I am a huge fan. I also dig this guy Brett McDaniel ua-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/v-deo.html . He isn't well known and I think he plays out of The Alabama area. So good man. So much talent out there. We need more music on the radio like Childers'
I agree with that
I wish he would have stayed with this kind of music , not feeling his new stuff at all , can't be mad at him for doing what he's feeling but just him and his guitar is where it's at for me, nose to the grindstone , hard times , white house road and this is all I really like Catholic girl is alright.
His lyrics, cadence, retention and delivery of song after song are impeccable, and blows the nickers off anything coming out of Nashville.
Sierra Bravo by far. Unbelievably good.
I believe he records his albums in Nashville.
You can't write rural music in a city like Nashville, you need to be surrounded by what your writing about
Tyler Childers is so good and raw man. I am a huge fan. I also dig this guy Brett McDaniel ua-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/v-deo.html . He isn't well known and I think he plays out of The Alabama area. So good man. So much talent out there. We need more music on the radio like Childers'
Well said agree❤
Tyler my daughter, showed me your songs, I’ve listened to them ever since. I love your singing, you have a beautiful voice. I get up with your songs and go to sleep with them, but I’m just so happy for you. I’m 73, but but I still love music. God bless you. Edith Lesher
You’re only as old as you feel Edith. Clearly you are still young at heart.
I wish i put my parents onto tyler but it was the opposite hahaha
This fine man came up singing in churches. Same home town. He’s on a different level. What a soul.
The guy puts 100% in every song he writes and plays. I haven't been this blown away since I first discovered Sturgil
getmoneyxrbm absolutely correct!
Couldn't have said it any better, I just discovered Tyler and mad that i didn't sooner
Look up colter Wall also, an Lost Dog Street Band. Them an Tyler have been on repeat for some time now :)
Travis Wicks colter is awesome I'll have to check out lost dog
Let me know what ya think.
I've watched several, if not all, of his videos on UA-cam. I swear when that man sings he transcends somewhere and some old spirit just takes over. His eyes are so dark and they are constantly moving about. His presence on stage and the way he stares off, it's like he's living in the moment of the song. He's seeing what you're hearing. His ballads are in a class all to themselves.
yessir... I had the good fortune to catch him live in Fort Worth. I had never heard of him, I befriended his road manager that day though, who ended up giving me tickets to come to see him perform that night. And holy shit was I blown away?!?!?! He's probably my favorite singer/song writer right now. This dude has some serious swagger... Check out his performance of "Nose To The Grindstone I captured that night. That little shift he does at the end of the song, lol. love it. A true southern troubadour...
ua-cam.com/video/p4u_f6_Rk7c/v-deo.html
You put it just right sjr
I'm gettin goose bumps listenin to his Kentucky troubadour
Ah, finally. Someone that understands "music ".
He does seem to get possessed by the muses
Tyler Childers is from my home town in Louisa Ky he is from a great family..he makes us proud !!
I got family in Louisa
Love it down that way, lotta fun and great memories out Yatesville. Such a rich area for beauty and talented souls and artists, Flatwoods, Ky guy here, just a couple ridges over, yee mfkn haw y’all
Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers aren't saving country music, they already have. Forget everything you hear on the radio. This is music.
I am an arrowhead collector and I found a killer find in one of my buddies fields. So I'm lucky my buddy didn't put me under the cold hard ground. Another buddy sent me this song after he heard it and I've been rocking Tyler since that day. The soul he puts into his music swept me away.
Bet you never thought you'd hear a song about digging for arrowheads, huh? Lol.
Only from Tyler
Tyler Childers is so good and raw man. I am a huge fan. I also dig this guy Brett McDaniel ua-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/v-deo.html . He isn't well known and I think he plays out of The Alabama area. So good man. So much talent out there. We need more music on the radio like Childers'
I seen the title of the song and was like there’s no way this song is about arrowheads and was legitimately surprised to hear the lyrics
Look up ‘Rocks and Relics’ talks about it there too!
This is the best premise for any outlaw country song I've ever heard, ever.
This is music. One man and his Axe just playin out his soul. Some of the most amazing music ever.
"Can't hold your girl with a fist full of shovel!" Goddamn, This is the best!!!!!!!!
Wow! This guys voice! Plus, a man that digs points and talks Clovis points…speaks directly to my heart. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Killer ain't it. Love his shit.
Cobains lyrics, BB Kings sound, Johnny Cash's heart and his voice. This is great and this is what country music is. It's gotten a bad rep over the years and I get so happy when I find actuall talent and passion.
cobain lyrics are "a mosquito, my libido" but yeah. Comparable lol
This kind of has the same melody of where did you sleep last night by nirvana.
Cobain just died early, that’s the only reason anyone likes him. Like that druggie from sublime
"I sit in this cell for the banded clovis I stole off of Nolan when I killed him that day
I reckon the chase of the pills and the powder, corn liquor, and women are the culprits to blame"
SUCH a badass lyric.
Yeah it's great. Man sits in a cell, life over and he still blames everything but self.
Best modern murder ballad I've ever heard. Matter-of-fact, personal storytelling, plenty of vice, and a warning at the end. All of the elements are there.
Meredith Williams listen to Colter Wall’s “Kate McCannon”
Pretty Polly. Ralph Stanley and Patty Loveless is a great murder song.
Thank you for that. Been listening for the last 9 months thanks to your comment.😎💯👌🏼
I know I’m a little late *cough cough* by 2 years, but you should listen too Kate Mcannon
i played this for my great aunt, who hasn't left the blue ridge mountains of west virginia in like 3 years, and she said it was like what she used to hear as a child
Does she like the Stanley brothers?
Tyler Childers is so good and raw man. I am a huge fan. I also dig this guy Brett McDaniel ua-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/v-deo.html . He isn't well known and I think he plays out of The Alabama area. So good man. So much talent out there. We need more music on the radio like Childers'
When he sing with just his guitar, it’s a magical and intoxicating sound!!
Folk music at its best. It's nice to see John Prine's legacy still lives on. Keep doing what you're doing your ahead of your time.
This is better than the album version.
(In my solitary opinion)
Ruber Stultus I like the solo acoustic stuff to! But go see him live with the band. Its amazing them boys kill it!! There heading to the top! They put in the time did the work and it shows!! They deserve it!
I’m finding most of his stuff is better live. Just proves how awesome he is. Hopefully as he gets bigger he’ll have a chance to record w/ better production quality.
I agree ! Wish I could buy this version.
I hate to say this because I don't want to leave anything negative, but the albums pale to his love recordings.
They all are.
Who don't love a good murder ballad??
Kerry O'Neill hell yeah. This and Kate Mccannon are the best ones out there right now
Heeeeey joooooooe
Kerry O'Neill completely agree with you and I noticed u are a wildland firefighter (I’m just now realizing you commented this a year ago but worth a shot) I’m 14 and I’m going to become a wildland firefighter and just wondering if you could give me some tips
@@9mmDentalPlan Marty Robbins has some good ones
Am I Demon I said heyyyyy jooeeeeee
Saw him on stage last week...holy shit! Dude is awesome!
Amazingly dark song no one signs like that man absolutely love all his songs
Love the "Drive By Truckers" poster on the wall - Just started listening to Tyler - Damn good also love Sturgill
Making the Commonwealth proud.
A unique sound.
Shawn Ward Even this Hoosier can love and respect the Commonwealth of Kentucky 🍻
It’s really not that unique. It’s traditional storytelling with local music style. It’s grand it’s getting playtime and attention. You’ve got good taste.
@@MountainHomeWoody His voice is quite unique.
Beating them strings like they own him money. Kentucky proud 🇺🇸
I will always love this version more than the album. His voice and guitar are all he needs
“It was a bitch to break ground, but the wine kept us going”........pretty much sums up farming
they werent farming thats not what the song is about
PayPerJew it’s called an analogy.

this has nothing to with wine.
@@vicimg84 I reckon the chase of the pills, and the powder, corn liquor and women are the culprits to blame.
"A Clovis like that is a hard point to find".... damn right it is.
This is the real deal top shelf low down right here, folks.
The music is American. This feeling is global.
Just heard Banded Clovis on 89.5 WMOT Roots Radio from Nashville. Tyler Childers is immediately one of my new favorites!
No doubt this man sold his soul and we are all blessed by his sacrifice.
The devil sold Tyler HIS soul.
This guy's putting out some of the best music we've sent in a long time.
Cool song ! Been hunt'n a Clovis for 45 years !
Thank you Tyler & Sturgill Simpson for bringing real country back ! I could listen to this boy all day. So much talent !!!
jonEbeeGood I'm with ya there. Love both of em. You should check out Colter Wall as well 👍

Simpson is just far too liberal for me to listen to. I don't mind differing views but he has fallen into that "All Trump voters are bigots," mentality
Tina Nolan had a man with a good place for siftin'.
He invited me diggin', so I picked up my screen,
And a shovel to dig and a jar of 'shine,
Traded me fair for a bottle of wine -
His brother's Barnes Mountain wine.
We trudged through the snow, straight up the hillside,
Took a ridge for a while, then we slowly went down
To an overhang hid from the ridgeline.
We bent o'er our handles and we bit in the ground -
The dark and bloody ground.
It was a bitch to break ground but the wine kept us goin'.
The moonshine was flowin', keepin' us warm,
'Cause you can't hold a girl with a fistful of shovel;
Gotta find your fire in the comp'ny of corn.
We dug for a while, then it all turned to ashes.
Found a bunch of broke flint and a few bits of bone.
Then I heard Jesse yell o'er the pile he was siftin' -
Shook the hills like the angels were callin' us home:
"Jesse, Zachary, come home!"
It was banded as hell; it was fluted and Clovis;
It was hot as the pistol I kept on my side...
And I was fiendin' so fierce, I was broke-ass and busted -
I pulled out my pistol and I took Jesse's life.
A Clovis like that is a hard point to find -
Makes pills swift to come by with a good chunk of change
Left over for burn on whatever meanness,
Whatever woman is comin' my way...
Darlin', come my way!
I sit in this cell for the banded Clovis
I stole off of Nolan when I killed him that day.
I reckon the chase of the pills and the powder,
Corn liquor and women are the culprits to blame.
I love to hear him sing this song, he just put his music together so well. I’ve heard anyone sing so good and so serious. I just Love to hear him sing and play. Edith walker-Lesher
I have never heard anyone sing any better than Tyler Childers
Tyler Childers is so good and raw man. I am a huge fan. I also dig this guy Brett McDaniel ua-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/v-deo.html . He isn't well known and I think he plays out of The Alabama area. So good man. So much talent out there. We need more music on the radio like Childers'
Just absolutely love your voice 😍 and I pray that you know that you are blessed...
need more guys like this to keep country / bluegrass alive
There's a lot of bluegrass in his music even when he's playing solo. I believe that's one reason he's catching fire. A lot of us grew up hearing bluegrass and it touches my soul. But a lot of old timers don't like new music polluting its purity.
Tyler is a talent from Eastern Kentucky and I think is the best artist to ever come from Kentucky yeah the best
Such an amazing song. He always sounds so good when he just plays it on guitar by himself. This dude is the man
Country music is supposed to tell you a story and feel like you’ve been punched in the gut. This guy does that and then some.
I know how my dad felt when he discovered some of his favorite musicians for the first time now. The first time I discovered Tyler Childers a few months ago was all I needed to hear. I can't stop listening to him. So good.
One of the best musicians and song writer I have heard in years
Dumpling valley pats??? Nice we both from that neck of the woods.. This the sound we were raised on round here...
How can people hate when he's destroying every genre. He's practically a psychiatrist with his lyrics getting in my head . Kid is so talented !!!!!
Oh my goodness..... combine this sound and incredible lyricism with my love if the hobby (two Clovis under my belt, thank you) and it's like a new found addiction
..
It simply doesn't get any better than this. Tyler is a once in a lifetime talent. The voice, the songwriting, etc. I feel like he's on par with Merle Haggard or Waylon Jennings. And they are two of my all-time favorites. He's that good.
Larry Haun I couldn’t agree more. The man is a genius. Best I have ever heard. He is just different. I am hooked for life
Just watched him on the jimmy falon show had to come back here. He’s come a long way 👌🏽
Hey Tyler ..you should do us all a good ole gospel tune I'd love to hear you I say your voice would be great for that type of music too...im from pike County ...gotta love east KY
Bro this dude literally took my breath away. Last time that happened was about five years ago when I listened to sturgill
I play this song every time I go arrowhead hunting. This is my all time favorite song ever.if you don't like this man's music you have no idea what country music really is.true wordsmith of modern times
A friend of mine found two clovis' (plural?) during an arrowhead hunt/dig with his dad. One of his dad's lifelong dreams was to find a clovis, but he never did, and sadly died a few years ago, but he was overjoyed that his son had found even one. I showed my friend this song and he was blown away at how true and awesome it is. Tyler rocks
Jason Ashby awesome
Omg! I want to find a nice Clovis so bad ! One of my dream finds. I was tickled to death to find this song . I've looked Pike county over for one.
That you question a out of place plural makes me doubt you
Psssst it’s illegal to dig and sift ...... hush bro
@@wesselvidge5070 In TN its legal on ones own property. Not sure bout ole Kentuck
Tyler Childers is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs
The hair stood up on my arm listening to this. I think it's my favorite since discovering your music a month ago. Keep it up 👍👍
No comment can say how much I love this damn song, great sound tells a story, Thank you for bringing country country back to life
I will love this song for the rest of my life.
Only found this talent not long ago, absolutely hooked on his music. People in Australia are blown away when I belt out his tunes!!! 👍
Once the love for artifacts gets in ya blood, you'll do some crazy things for em. I love this song!!
May very well be....
but this was about selling the head for drug money
@@triggerhappydad65 really? We had no idea.
Man o man what a good song Banded Clovis. . My son turned me on to this. Thanks Tyler Childers for writing a song about arrowheads sifting and digging. That Wolf for turning me on to this fine artist!!
Jesse Layman still trying to figure out which one of us he killed
Being an old head hunter and music enthusiast this is my new theme song. This guy is great!
Don't ever change for the people that don't like county music. you are probably the best in years
To me the funniest part is the very last verse.
“I sit in this cell for the banded clovis I stole off of Nolen when I killed him that day” saying he’s in jail for stealing and not murder lol then blames addiction and chasing women for his actions 😂 just clever and funny as hell to me
Tyler Childers is going to be remembered as one of the greatest songwriters of our day.
"When I killed him that day" to me says it all.
Tyler Childers I have yet to hear a song of yours that I didn't love. My son turned me on to you some time back and I've loved you ever since. YOU are the MAN.
Whoever did the sound on this video did a great job.
This guy is a straight beast. Purgatory is the best album I've ever heard.
This will be his next song to blow up. Hes a legend already
Tyler Green I been listening to this dude for a few weeks straight.Guy Townes Steve and Rodney all in one.
We've got more coming soon. Along with Caroline Spence and a few others
Tyler Green gotta agree with ya
Tyler Green I agree. He's all I listen to, no one else compares. I'm from right over the mountain in Norton, Virginia. He sings about real life, especially life here in these mountains. True to his roots. #EASTERNKY #SOUTHWESTVA #RUNSDEEP
100.9 The Creek I'm subbing to you now if I'm not already, thank you!!! Tyler Childers is the best, hands down. I'm over in Norton, Virginia, over the mountain from where he's from. One local radio station I know finally played a song 2 weeks in a row. Terrible quality and slowed down so much it sounded horrible. Pissed me off. We gotta get Tyler more exposure. He'll take off like a rocket when the right person hears him. It's coming though.
when you come from a coal town so many of his songs just make a lot more sense. Guys like Tyler are proving there's a lot of talent in these Appalachian mountains.
Talent indeed and talent in droves. It seems the Appalachians have alot in common musically with the people of the Canadian Maritimes. Beautiful and bittersweet songs aboug a hardscrabble existence. Cheers
Thanks for this version. The guy is just brilliant. Have been listening to little else for weeks now.
He's on repeat round my house. And yeah, I bet he's got a high IQ too.
Sierra Bravo I can stop playing it
floppyd0g same here!

One of Kentucky’s greats. I love the people of my state.
Pretty sure this is one of the best damn songs ive ever heard.!
Can't stop listening to this man's music awesome thanks young man
Absolutely the best... period
Shits in his bones--the feel and the voice and the attachment to the legacy. Bravo.
Really enjoy just him and his acoustic. Thanks for the upload
This is seriously my favorite song of his! As a man who has dug arrowheads and know what he means. Plus the amazing music and lyrics! Love it!
67 thumbs down? 67 people I don’t need to know.
David Long AMEN !!
Word
That's about how many big acts are in Nashville. Hmmm.
Fuck em
Preach!
I found Tyler Childers about a year ago from Spotify and absolutely love htis guy. The rawness of his voice and tone give me goosebumps. Loving on repeat everything from "Nose on the Grindstone ' to "Lady May" and of course "White House Rd". We're planning a trip to the States later this year and hoping to catch him in concert on the trip[
Love everything about him havent heard a song i dont love
Me too they're all bad ass
Me too he kicks asss
Tyler, came out the waters a legend. His future lies full! ✊
Fuck yeah man I've been hunting that Clovis a while now! This song gave me chills.
What a storyteller
he really is a bad ass writer aint he?
This... THIS is how you tell a story!
Tyler is by far in his own breed of man. I've arrowhead hunted before but this a story I wish I could tell.
Tylers sou d is so unique he's is by far one of my favorite singers right now.
I love this!! No words to describe him!!
Love your music.....I'm from Eastern ky....stay true to that sound, it's unique like the hills.
I don't know who you are radio station but hats off to be supporting this young man and I'm sure some others when main stream doesn't.
Thanks for watching! You can stream us online 24/7 at www.thecreekfm.com
The creek is a great radio station found it while driving throuh0gh georgia oneday out of macon ga...tune in online
This is country music! Pure and simple, no snap or clap tracks, just plain old gut singing. From one former good old boy from Louisa to another. Keep it up! There is more talent in those hills than all of Nashville!
I'm so glad there is a video of this. One of my favorites on his new album
Jonny Renfrow hell yes. I agree. What's your 2nd??
Smooth Chaos probably either "I swear to god" or "feathered Indians". The whole album is great though.
I can't name 10 country songs but this guy....amazing. Bluegrass. American music at its finest.
Left me stunned and wanting more. A great song. I wanted one more verse. The advice verse from the jailed addict telling folks not to arrowhead hunt while in withdrawal....lol
I've found a few Clovis points in my day in my hometown of Chilhowie, Virginia!!!
Best song I have heard in awhile just found this n can't stop listening. Keep em coming brother!!!
Travis Fain - Have you heard any of his other songs? Whitehouse road, nose to the grindstone, feathered Indians, play me a hank song, and the harvest, are all amazing, along with many more. Look them up if you haven’t already.
Big Slay I love anything he sings American badass he's going to go far
Did he kill Jesse or Nolan? Confused and wildly entertained.
Never heard your music until they played one of your songs in a bar and grill in Dalonega GA. Forever fan!!❤
Tyler's a beast.
going back to Tyler is like going back to Merle and Willie love this boy!
