My mom broke this cycle when we were growing up because of her past.. We had our share of fun once when we got older, but we understood what she meant...Everyone has to grow up at some point.
This was me and my stepfather. After mother passed we lived our life like this. I had no family and nether did he, but we had each other and taught me how to start shooting pool at 8 years old. Never Trade those days. Others probably had more stable lives but none of them could walk into a bar and walkout with a grand in his pocket. I can always feed myself and got a little cash in my pocket. He taught me to survive, Hunt, Fish and build anything with my 2 hands.. Yours teach you how to survive on your own? He passed at 76 raising a son he didn’t have to. The best man I ever knew, he just didn’t know how to be anything but what he was….
It reminds me of my friend Adam from Sand Point Idaho. He got a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago. Didn’t have any money so as a teenager in the 90’s he sold ecstasy out of a bar on the south side. I met him in his 40’s. He was a chef and we would hang out after a restaurant shift at the local. I once asked him how he got so good at pool, and he told me it was just when he was killing time in Chicago waiting for his beeper to go off. He was a good chef and a shark on the pool table. But he was an awesome painter. He would go home and paint after the bars late into the night, and somehow still find the energy to go prep at the restaurant the next day. And he was a real honest dude. He passed away in Denver in 2021. I love you, Adam. 🙏

Wow, McConaughey is something else. Lost my father in may last year. He was a man with many faults, always with a plan, always failed. But he loved me, and I loved him - I miss him so much
Well One thing He didn’t fail at was to love his boy sir. You’re dad succeeded where many men never do even if he is considered a failure by the worlds standards.
I relate to this 100%. Lost my dad suddenly when he was 59 in 2021. A flawed man in many ways but the best father I could have ever asked for. He did and would do anything for his kids. Sorry for your loss, the dead dad club sucks.
Wow! Great story. Love how he got older and dad had the same outfit on the whole time like he would never change. Then boom, it was all the same night. Really drove home the point of the kid growing up fast.
I was thinking it showed that the Dad never changed. Like getting beat up was a recurring event. The boy also looked like his dad's behavior was unsurprising, like he'd seen it happen many times before.
That last transition was absolutely beautiful. To me it showed that even when he would lose bets and be beaten because he and his son couldn't win even when he was a child he never stopped loving him and believing in him, and didn't stop, even when he lost on purpose. What a beautiful song and video, wow
It was more that he was always losing bets from the very beginning and the fact that MM never ages or wears different clothes could mean he wasn’t really there in his older years when he was playing pool?
I feel like the film was a ‘dream’ the father had, in that he envisioned his son being a prodigy so he made the ‘bet’ only to find out at the end he lost the first game, so his hopeful vision was wrong. I feel like it’s showing how betting can lead you close to death
he was winning bets and his dad was using him. He had it the last shot looked at his dad, as he was a grown man at that point, and deliberately put the 8 ball in the wrong pocket to lose, look at him looking at MM right before and the facial interaction after.
I gotta say the song is great but I’m always amazed at how well Matthew McConaughey embodies a character. Even without dialogue. If you grew up going to dark dusty pool halls you’ve met exactly that dude 😂

This video is absolutely beautiful. Being a father is beautiful. I miss my son right now i don't want to miss another day without him.
Lots of meaning in those 3 words. He could've said "yep, I deserved that. I overextended and you called me out on it. I'm proud of you. The fight hurt, but not as much as your disappointment. I'm glad you came back. Wanna do it again next week?"
Im 58 and this reminds me of my Dad taking me to bars on Saturday mornings in Charlotte NC.......it was always the same, "I'm going to stop by here for a couple then we'll go". The bar matron would feel so sorry for me that she would give me a roll of quarters for the pool table.
Can’t speak for your experience but I will have to say growing up in a bar taught me things about men and life I couldn’t have learned any where else, good and hard lessons, definitely created a different environment but I’m glad I saw it
You have no idea how this hit me. Learned from my dad chuck also and I hustled pool for 20 years all over the east coast pretty much how I survived and now I'm in the west this life builds harder men that's for sure
“I don't wanna bet but my father wrote a check that I bet his ass could never cash.” this song speaks to me on a different level. my father was an addict/alcoholic and was never really a father to me because he was so absorbed in his drug of choice and his old habits. all i ever wanted was a father and to do all the things we did before he fell hard into addiction and gave into his demons. “He'll probably die nothing, but this town's overdrunkard and die on a smoke-stained stool," i felt that way every day. he passed away in October of last year to a drug overdose, i made a promise to myself to heal and to be the person he unfortunately couldn’t be for me. “my father was a bettin’ man, but i got myself a steady hand.” he gambled his life every day until his luck ran out, but i’ll always have my steady hand and a good head on my shoulders. music is what you make of it and Zach Bryan has spoken to me in ways many artists haven’t before.

Zach Bryans music never fails to make me cry. Not because all of his songs are sad, they are just so emotional and you can tell how much he puts into his music.
I just cried my eyes out, sent it to my dad. All the years, the lessons playing pool, the memories. Man, this song reminds you how much love you can have for something someone showed you, along with missing someone before they’re gone. Absolute masterpiece.
The memories I have, drinking Mt. Dew on bar stools, listening to the same old timers, tell the same old stories, alongside my dad and little brother will forever be with me.
Mt Dew? You must be very young. My dad bought me an RC cola, in a glass bottle, and set me up on a pool table while him and his buddy played snooker at the pool hall. 😁
Got a tear in my eye when he carried his son out at the end.. As the father of a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, all I want is to be a good role model for them. It's damn not easy, so afraid of making mistakes and ruining them completely. Cheers from Norway :)
I feel as if the best role model you can be is letting mistakes happen but showing your kids that mistakes dont set you back and they are a learning experience instead of trying to be perfect
Same, everytime I watch that last scene tears just rush to my eyes. I have a 5 year old boy & an almost 8 year old girl. I guess that's got a lot to do with why that scene gets to me so much.
I second that. Was just in Selbu earlier this year. Absolutely loved Norway and spent time with my boy on the lake. Many father son moments and ciders by the fire. Cheers from The U.S.
I had a really evil shroom trip months ago felt like I was being attacked by demons I grabbed my Bible and put on Christian music but it wasn’t helping . This came on the shuffle and it saved me. I played it for 3 hours straight. Getting baptized this Sunday. Godbless
It's not quit the same as going in. Noticed the change of music and Matthew's face. His son became just his little boy again after he lost the game. The father still carries his injury and his face is not happy. Another thing to note is that they didn't make him look older as he aged; he remained the same throughout the entire video. Brings to question the feel good emotions at the beginning. Was it father and son time or was his son just a tool for him?
@@fortyninehike I think the answer is in what you said. Think it started out as father and son time, but over time it turned into something else. But the dad didn't lose the love for his son, its just that his focus got shifted. The son lost the game on purpose at the end because he was angry at his father. Well, not angry at his father, but angry at the greed that has taken his fathers love from him. Basically, he misses his dad. But after the fight the dad realizes his mistake, turns from his greed, and chooses his son over his ego. Their relationship is restored. Pretty cool video.
I love that Matthews character never changes clothes, because some people never change. I have had this playing on repeat for like 3 days. It's so damn good.
OMG only Zach Bryan can make u feel every bit of trauma growing up and oddly enjoying it, while featuring Matthew McConaughey to bring it home in a short film. Loved it!
This music video was exactly what I needed to help restore my faith in reality. I was so excited to see Matthew McConaughey, I ran into my daughters room, she is the brilliant soul, that introduced me to Zac, and she was not impressed with my reaction. Anyway, this music video has restored my faith in life and in reality, as most of Zac’s music. We are so lucky to have this brilliant young man here with us.
This video brought back every memory of my childhood I had forgotten. My father was a bettin man. The blts and pickle spears. The nice waitresses that would watch us while dad went around the corner. Karaoke night. Racing the greyhounds at the dog track and splitting bags of vending machine chips between my two brothers and him. Then he’d hit and take us to Walmart and buy us all new bikes. He’s gone now but he was the greatest step dad a man could ask for. Joseph Strichek. Legend. Just like Zach Bryan.
Man I knew the kid looked so god damn familiar but absolutely could not connect the dots for 2 days. Thank you so much for liberating my mind and making this connection for me
Hey mr. Bryan Youll never read this comment but i just wanted to say that your music has genuinely helped me through the deepest of moments in my life. You have singlehandedly prevented me from committing suicide and i thank you for that
The simple, yet complex aspect of Zach’s music is nuts. For many, it’s just background music with a catchy tune. If you sit down and try to understand and interpret the lyrics, you start to fully grasp the passion and depth his songs truly have. This one hits hard. Good work
There are great songs out there. There are great videos. But rarely does a music video truly capture the essence of the song it's supposed to be about. This is perfect.
every single time I play this song my stomach tightens extremely hard and I can’t help but to cry thank you too my father for keeping me under his wing my whole life
My daughter (9) loves Zach Bryan. We have watched this a thousand times. Even after that, I am explaining part of the video. I call it a movie. Because it has a full length cinematic feel. We have concert tickets this summer! Can’t wait!
Already singing the song word for word. Something about Zach Bryan confirms that the old way is not dead. 8 years in the military, Worldwide country artist and only 27 years old. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this kid.
Zach Bryan has an unparalleled talent for crafting songs that pack such depth and emotion that they could easily be adapted into full-length films. Witnessing Tye Sheridan in the music video was a treat, but having McConaughey on board was truly unexpected! Zach's ascent into the big leagues feels inevitable, if not already achieved!
Lost my old man when I was 29, about 2.5 years ago. This song reminds me so much of him, and our relationship. I must’ve watched this video about 50 times since it was released. Miss you, pops ❤
Somthing about Zachs music that breaks me down. The emotions pour out. It's good. I didn't realize how much emotion i have stored inside after 41 years. Miss my Father. Love Jesus. Love everyone, love great music.
love how this relates to so many even in different situations. We all have that one loved one, that we can't help, but feed into their bad habits in efforts to connect with them. Zach's the goat
The craziest part is alot of people are gonna see themselves in both the kid and the dad we all have that one bht alot of us we are also that one at the same time the blind leading the sick
Wow, Zach Bryan never fails to deliver powerful and relatable music. The imagery in this video, along with the unexpected casting of Matthew McConaughey, is truly remarkable. Another amazing work from Zach!
Zach got robbed of his Grammy yesterday!!!!!!! 🏆 That was the best album of 2023 of any genre!!!!!! Even better than Taylor's. Should have been album of the year main category!!!!!!!
Sounds like few fathers I have known and know. Hell might well say few mothers. Sad sad but when all you know ? Could be a chain breaker ! Love this Zach Brian you never cease amaze me. ❤
Goose bumps when McConaughey walked out with the boy at the end. As a father with my father’s vices trying to break our generational curse that hits home.
@@alejandroalvarez7377 in the end it shows Matthew carrying his son out when his son is a little boy. So I wondering if the character Matthew plays had a dad that would do that to him but Matthew didn’t do it to his son
@@_alexkane_ The dad is still the same dad throughout the night. He's beat up and bloody at the end, despite the son's child and adult versions showing. It's the son who changes in the course of a night. He has to grow up fast in that environment. The dad, even though he plays fast/loose, remains loyal to his son throughout. The son rebels, causes the fight, then finds/protects dad in the end. "That's my boy." Notice that during the fight Ty Sherridan's character throws an awkward punch, but when he's moving through the crowd the adults avoid him. It's because he's a child. It's a song and video about the bond between father/son, despite both of their flaws.
@@gobdav thank you so much for explaining that. that’s what I thought it was about but then the end got me so confused so I thought I was missing something there. I appreciate you taking the time to explain that to me.
Zach you don’t know how much you have changed my life. I love you and your music so much! I relate to your music much. You are literally the reason I am who I am to day. Btw This is my favorite music video! Love you❤
I've watched this many times more than necessary, and I can't shake the feeling it gives. As soon as he dropped the album I've been hooked on this song and couldn't wait for this video. Good shit Zach

The scene where he walks out of the bar carrying his son asleep, brought tears to my eyes. That was me when I was younger, my dad was a drunk and mom would send me in the bar to call him out. He would tell me wait at the bar and get a coke.
Man.... THAT was the best music video of all time. What a next level performance. It felt like we were just delivered a full movie in 3 minutes. Great job capturing the emotion with that end scene. what an amazing video, truly.
Any Charley Crockett fans also realize the first couple seconds of the music video shows the pawn shop across the street that Charley posed in front of for his $10 Cowboy album cover? Love that guy. Kind of cool those 2 things happened to be captured next door to one another. Love this song and the acting and everything about it. Zach continues to put out some of the best music in our time.
FATHER OF TWO, THIS HIT ME HARD .........MY FATHER WAS A DRINKER AND I PROMISED MYSELF NEVER TO GO DOWN THAT ROAD BUT HE SURE DID TEACH ME TO BE TOUGH. LOVE YOU OLD MAN.
Feels like a sequel to dazed and confused where wooderson has a kid and times have changed... Idk i love zachs songs and his music videos like these where they actually mean something... Very heartfelt, cant say anything other than the fact that i love it
I may not know my real dad, but when I was 16 my friends dad took me in like one of their own, all the nights we have drank together since then, and just appreciating everything he’s done for me and seeing the great man he is! It will always make me be different when I have my own kids, a lot of people don’t cheris their lives and I think we all should a little more!
us kids that grew up in bars with dad needed this. These songs heal my broken heart.

I feel this. Not necessarily the sadness but the beauty and the resonance. I completely understand but it’s hard to put into words sometimes.
Pheww.. sitting here crying reading about all these stories about boys and their dads.. Gosh- I could read these for hours. So beautiful
Relatable
The memories I have, drinking Mt. Dew on bar stools, listening to the same old timers, tell the same old stories, alongside my dad and little brother will forever be with me.
Same but with my Grandad and uncles at the VFW playing bingo, shooting pool, and drinking Dr Pepper.
7-up was my go to shot as a fellow bar kid.
If that ain't the truth!
Mt Dew? You must be very young. My dad bought me an RC cola, in a glass bottle, and set me up on a pool table while him and his buddy played snooker at the pool hall. 😁
I must have been spoiled. My dad was ordering me Shirley temples.
Godbless
Don’t do drugs kids. Mckayyy
Wow, what a story.
as a film major, zach bryan fan, and mathew McConaughey fan this video is now one of my favorite pieces of media
It’s truly an amazing video.
Amen 🙏
Nice
Zach's voice is absolutely timeless ❤
Ur so so right!
Not really.

Can we all agree that Zach Bryan is the goat of these times and he’s giving every country great a real run for their money
Long live Zach Brian
So cool to see Ty Sheridan and Matthew reunited! Mud is a great movie ❤
Anyone else honestly willing to pay money to see this video be turned into a full length movie?
@@lukefoster5794No.
@@lukefoster5794 it is a movie called Mud
Was searching for a Mud reference! First thing I thought of.
Bro i thought that was the boy boy from mud
This needs to be a movie
It was. It’s called Poolhall Junkies.
You ever seen A River Runs Through It? It’s similar
@@timstwartpoolhall junkies is terrible. The Hustler and Color of Money
@@SoBilliards
Yeah, poolhall junkies tries too hard to be slick. You don’t believe in any of the characters.
It kinda was. I mean it had 3 acts, a protagonist, bad guy and resolution.
I love the symbolism that the father doesn’t change once when the boy’s growing up.
As a father of a 2 year old boy that ending walk out holding his son hit me right in the feels.
Same
It's not quit the same as going in.
Same
@@fortyninehike I think the answer is in what you said.
Bro it hit me hard I teared up and paused it. Father of 8m old
3 minutes and tells a more heartfelt story than most feature length films
I agree it made me cry
I love that Matthews character never changes clothes, because some people never change.
I have had this playing on repeat for like 3 days. It's so damn good.
❤❤❤❤❤
us kids that grew up in bars with dad needed this. These songs heal my broken heart. ❤❤❤
Well said ma'am 💞🌹🌹
Gonna send this song for my dad on Father's Day! Greetings from Ukraine!
OMG only Zach Bryan can make u feel every bit of trauma growing up and oddly enjoying it, while featuring Matthew McConaughey to bring it home in a short film. Loved it!
Well said ma'am 💞🌹🌹💜💞
zach always got some top tier music videos
❤
Mud & Ellis reunited in a Zach Bryan video? Yesss!!!! I just watched this movie, again, last night. It's one of my favorites...
Mine too
Man I knew the kid looked so god damn familiar but absolutely could not connect the dots for 2 days. Thank you so much for liberating my mind and making this connection for me
Hey mr. Bryan
Youll never read this comment but i just wanted to say that your music has genuinely helped me through the deepest of moments in my life. You have singlehandedly prevented me from committing suicide and i thank you for that
never give up
The simple, yet complex aspect of Zach’s music is nuts.
This is perfect.
every single time I play this song my stomach tightens extremely hard and I can’t help but to cry thank you too my father for keeping me under his wing my whole life
Comment the like count everytime you come back
My daughter (9) loves Zach Bryan. We have watched this a thousand times. Even after that, I am explaining part of the video. I call it a movie. Because it has a full length cinematic feel. We have concert tickets this summer! Can’t wait!
@mikemike7688 OMG! Same thing here. My daughter loves him too. And, bc he also grew on me I’m going to get tickets for when he comes to Arizona.
I hope you enjoy the concert.
Already singing the song word for word. Something about Zach Bryan confirms that the old way is not dead. 8 years in the military, Worldwide country artist and only 27 years old. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this kid.
My new favorite artist
Holy shit. My favorite actor with my favorite artist??? ARE WE KIDDING??? This was amazing.
What a great way to put!
The craziest part is alot of people are gonna see themselves in both the kid and the dad we all have that one bht alot of us we are also that one at the same time the blind leading the sick
The beauty of film and music together. They elevate each other to a different level.
Yess I totally agree with that
Yea pretty beats .. writing your own music these days . What a joke
I screamed Tye when I saw him! How cool to see Matthew and Tye together again! Bloody brilliant!!!! #mud
A legendary music video for a legendary song, thank you Zach
Sounds like few fathers I have known and know. Hell might well say few mothers. Sad sad but when all you know ? Could be a chain breaker ! Love this Zach Brian you never cease amaze me. ❤
This was so good. The instrumentation. The lyrics. Mcconaughey. Perfect.

Probably one of the best songs I've heard. Should have been a movie. Great story line
Goose bumps when McConaughey walked out with the boy at the end. As a father with my father’s vices trying to break our generational curse that hits home.
Oh so his dad did that to him but Matthew didn’t do it to his son is that what that was about
Why was he a kid again
Every time I watch it, this video breaks my heart in the most beautiful way. Cracking job

Zach Bryan's "Nine Ball" is a heartfelt masterpiece, showcasing deep emotions and songwriting brilliance. Truly unforgettable.
From the story to the casting, it doesn't get better than this!
Zach has such a gift. Truth is at the root of his lyrics.
Why is this song so good and tha acting as well These guys just don’t miss

The scene where he walks out of the bar carrying his son asleep, brought tears to my eyes. That was me when I was younger, my dad was a drunk and mom would send me in the bar to call him out. He would tell me wait at the bar and get a coke.
This has to be one of my favorite music videos of all time. Love the storytelling!

The collab we didn't know we needed. ❤ this song is great on its own, but with Matthews acting, it puts a picture to the story. Brought me to tears.

Unbelievable video. Three minutes felt like an entire hour! Way to capture the essence of this song Matthew McConaughey
I may not know my real dad, but when I was 16 my friends dad took me in like one of their own, all the nights we have drank together since then, and just appreciating everything he’s done for me and seeing the great man he is!
