Grumman Aircraft

- There are precious few aircraft designers that started their career by making biplanes and finished it making supersonic jets… but there are even fewer engineers that got their foot in the door by designing naval biplanes and made it to supersonic carrier-based fighter jets. Spoiler: there’s only one such engineer, and his name was Leroy Grumman. His contribution to the advancement of naval aviation is nothing short of tremendous. At some point, Grumman had such a hold on the Navy that the American Congress had to step in and force the Navy to employ less effective designs from other manufacturers just to break the monopoly. Otherwise competitors didn’t stand a chance against the undisputed king of carrier-based aircraft.

imagine being so strong as a company the US Government nerfs you to make you less competitive JUST to kick ass again by making the F-14
Actually the F-14 Tomcat was a result of Congress wanting a single airframe for both branches and went with the USAF’s Low altitude High speed design over the US Navy’s want of a High Altitude fighter/interceptor. The F-111 was so much of a pain for carrier operations that it literally took the Navy slamming stacks of documentation of issues and problems that they had with the F-111 that Congress finally saw that they weren’t going to win this battle so they let the Navy put out a requirement for their needs as well.
whoa that's a lot of words. Too bad i wont read them
@@Fughzet So you instead of reading chose to write a comment about not reading it. Alright
and that is the idiocy of having such a strategically important industry in the hands of private individuals.

My grandfather had a large part in designing the F-14. He’d appreciate this video praising his favorite company he work for.

The only one that could defeat Grumman was none other than himselft, he died and the F/A-18 Hornet started replacing the F-14 just an incredible engineer smart guy who knows what he was doing and no other carrier based aircraft engineer would ever surpass him
I 100% agree, the only man that could ever beat Grumman, was himself, and he’s done so many many times. Grumman is still my favorite, even surpassing Boeing imo, with the except of the companies efforts to make my favorite, the F/A 18 Hornet and Super Hornets. Amazing engineers work there
i think the f-18 super hornet engineers put effort on this plane but i think F-14 from Grumman is still the best.
Kinda like the John Moses Browning of Airplanes.
@@droydr4436 no the f14 is outdated in its mission and capabilites
@@samuelsnowdon2271 F-14 didn't become outdated, it just became too expensive to maintain the technology
Growing up, I loved the F-14... I have since added the F6F to that.
For me it’s the opposite lol
Same here!
I remember being on the ground in Iraq when the F14 did its final flight. I flew over all the Coalition locations. Was an amazing site
Thanks for your service
My Dad was a Grumman Engineer and worked on the F-14 Project! Very Proud of that! TOMCAT! Anytime, Baby! Salute to Grumman and the Entire Grumman Family and Community!
Knew Steve well! He sat behind me in Plant1,in Bethpage.
@@georgehilton8330dang if this is real its cool
Love the F6F. Its basically a naval p47, it even uses the same engine
i dont like it i prefer the p47 and p40
P47 has a better engine, it even has supercharger
IIRC the P47 was built around its engine, like the a-10 was built around the GAU-8, but they we're a lot different, P47 was better in acceleration, roll, diving speeds, etc... and we're talking about a mock dogfight Between a grumman test pilot in a p47B, and a early f6f hellcat... Just imagine the advantage if it were a P47D variant...
@@Eduardo_Munhoz It was the "same" engine, but in different versions for each plane, usually p47 had some 300hp + or - in advantage, plus both had two stage superchargers...
Edit: Pratt and whitney R2800-39/R2800-59... etc.
There is no need to compare these two because they were designed to fullfill completely different roles. The P-47 was mainly an escort plane operating at high altitudes effectively thanks to the unique supercharger and the additional water injection. The Hellcat role was to make the pilots able to fight back the japanese Zero. It also had a supercharger but the engine was tuned to mid- low altitude use. Later variant (f6f-5) also got the water injection system. The Hellcat was able to withstand the extreme conditions of carrier use, it was more maneuverable at lower speeds (impossible to get into accelerated stall) basically the best handling tail dragger of it's time, while the Thunderbolt was faster, had more range, better armed, divespeed was better but because of its low energy state it was dangerous to go into dogfights at low speeds especially at low altitude. It was also more expensive to produce. Both of these designes had their pros/cons.
The F-14 Tomcat was really ahead of its time when it was built, one of the greatest fighter jets.
Really great plane it’s a shame the plans for the super tomcat was shelved before it could take off.
@@steakinbacon8593 the Tomcat was a maintenance nightmare thanks to the variable wing design. I think this was the reason why the Navy ditched the concept of keeping them or it's successors in service.
@@pauka13 not to mention the fact that with better engine and advancements In technology made Variable Swept wing design un-needed.
Thing looked futurist, and was futuristic. Great aircraft.
Big fan off suffering btw
Thx for the likes 👍
We all are! :')
Actually, Grumman did compete against the Brewster F2A Buffalo with the original F4F Wildcat and lost. However, Grumman recognized the strengths of the design and revised it, cleaning up some of the rough edges and won a contract once resubmitted.
The F6F Hellcat and the F-14 tomcat will always be my favorite aircraft designed by Grumman.
My favorite Grumman aircraft would likely never come to War Thunder..... That being the S2F Tracker.
I love all the Grumman designs! but the Bearcat takes the cake with its good acceleration and maneuverability paired with its 20mm cannons!
Also the machine guns one isn t bad at all
@@slate4687 Absolutely isn't! especially with its new tier its quite the excellent choice to fly!
I love the F-14 but I am shocked that the A-6 wasn't even mentioned.
Before I watched this video I had no idea who Grumman was. I find it amazing that these planes are some of my absolute favorites, with the F-14 being my most loved fighter of all time, and they all belong to the same company.
Same man Same
You know how much he loves cats when he named all the glorious and powerful airplanes after cat names
only 'big' cats tho
British pilot John Herbert, flying off the carrier Victorious: 'Concerning the Wildcat I echo the line of our best test pilots - it was probably the finest deck-landing aircraft ever built. I once landed a Wildcat with a hole in one wing big enough to put my desk through. I've landed with most of my tail shot away and with holes all over it, and bits dripping out of the engine, and the bloody thing still flew. It was incredibly good.'
NAHHHH JOHN HERBERT ACTUALLY EXISTED
I may not play the game but my favourite aircraft from Grumman would definitely have to be the Navy quartet of the Wildcat, Hellcat, Avenger, and Tomcat.
Lots of cats ey?
Bearcats and tigercats are crazy designs
The F14 by a long shot was my favorite plane and still is since it was what I grew up dreaming about flying
Most people would say the F-14 is their favorite plane from Grumman himself and because it was famous in the movies: “Top Gun” and the sequel Top Gun Maverick. Even though it would be my favorite plane as well, I would go for the aircraft that is not well known or not popular like the: A6 Intruder, E/A-6B Prowler, TBF Avenger, F6F Hellcat, and F8F Bearcat. Those aircraft would be my choices because of their unique history and they often get overlooked over all other aircraft out there in the navy aircraft carrier fleet.
The F6-F at BR 3.0 is a pure monster. And I do like the F8F-1 (sans B). At 4.x with its payload options it delivers. Literally.
The 3.0 one is horrible. Mediocre engine power

I love the look of the F9F panther, something about that look has stuck with me.
same
For me, the F-14 is and always will be the most beautiful jet of all time.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat has traditionally been my favorite WW2 fighter plane because when I was a kid I had a flight Sim game called Hellcats Over the Pacific and later Hellcats over Leyte Gulf. Well because I was a kid when I played those games it had such a huge influence on me. The Hellcat, the Lightning, the Betty, the Zero, the Frank all became my favorites.
This man was a literal legend
He designed some of the best fighters in naval aviation history

Grumman: I am limited by the technology of my time
I think the Tomcat is going to be a given, but my favorite would be the F7F Tigercat. The R2800 is an awesome engine (that also powered the P-47, F4U), so why not double the awesome by adding another R2800.
Some fun facts worth knowing about Grumman and its aircraft:
Because of the Wildcat and Hellcat's ability to take damage and continue fighting (owing to its heavy armor), Grumman earned itself the nickname Grumman Iron Works.
Also, Neil Armstrong flew an F9F Panther back in the Korean War, before he became a legend among astronauts for his historic landing on the moon.
The F11F Tiger is infamous for the one incident where it shot itself with its own guns. The aircraft was firing at a high angle, and then went into a dive where it gained enough speed to fly into the bullets it fired as the rounds started dropping.
Finally, had the US not adopted the universal naming for all aircraft in 1962(F-4, F-8, F-14, etc), the Tomcat would have likely inherited the designation F12F. That would have completed the complete line of Grumman Big Cats going back to the F4F Wildcat.
Imagine being so good at something that they have to choose someone else since they'd all be without work but you.
Grumman makes me proud to be a Long Islander
Love the video, keep up the good work Gaijin! 😄
I love this style of video. Thank You!
Just love the Grumman Ironworks. Leroy Grumman was truly a legend. Grumman was really a representation of what the US industry was capable of for winning the war. When the Hellcat went into mass production they were capable of raising the produced number of aircrafts to 1 unit/ hour wich is insane.
Idk but I’ve always found the F4F adorable, as well as an experienced veteran of the Pacific (and a bit in the Atlantic). This is why it’s been my favorite aircraft, despite not technically being the best, flying from some legendary ships like the carriers of the Lexington and Yorktown classes in battles like Coral Sea and Midway, as well as in Guadalcanal and other battles throughout the war.
I'm about to get my first jet on the US tech tree and today I started researching the f84
Good luck and have fun

My fave Grumman birds:
From the prop era, it's a tie between the Wildcat and Hellcat.
Jet era... there can only be one... it's name is Tomcat.
What an inspiring video. Absolutely loved this.
My favorite is the F4F Wildcat, rugged little plane that held its ground against the Zero until its bigger brother was ready.
Great video and very informational
Hell, yeah! Love me some Grumman aircraft. Outstanding video, Gaijin! ❤🔥
So, when do we get the venerable A-6 Intruder? Been waiting what seems like ages for this beast. Especially the E model. 😉
Also, can we _please_ get the F6F-3 Hellcat and F11F-1 Tiger (early short-nosed model)? 🙏

Can you do one on douglas next? would love to see the Skyray in a video
The F14 Tomcat was the most iconic aircraft from Grumman.
The f14 is my favorite plane of all time and I also love the tigercat.
I love unusual aircraft designs. So my pick is the XF5F.
It’s something... Some call it ugly, I call it special.
Of course, with that same thought I’d have added two huge rocket thrusters at the end of the propeller engines and would’ve called it a podracer, but hey, I’ll have to wait for those boosts

The two Pacific cats for me, I still use Hellcat for my all-go ground and sea battle as a primary fighter bomber
I didn;t really think much of Wildcat until i fight one on Simulator using A6M3, the thing just refuse to die, and i see some great wildcat pilots when grinding other tech tree
The F6F Hellcat was my favourite, just by hearing the story behind it, Is amazing😎🤩

the grumman tiger :) ive gotten to fly and fly in one of the two prototypes built for it (one never flew and they were both painted with tiger stripes) my grandpa is a test pilot and his boss is the owner of the one flying prototype!
