About This Video:
In this video, Techno Dad goes over how to setup Dolby Atmos and Zone 2 using the Onkyo TX-NR676. This is a great feature if you want to add a second zone of music to you home. With this workaround, you'll be able to have 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos playing in the main room, and a second room will have different music playing in a 2-channel configuration.

hi.sir can we use zoon2 speaker in same room,( in my movie room want them to work together .)
I'm curious, is there anyway to rig up analong equalizers anymore?
3:54 what a mess of cables, you going to clean that up??
@@seezzrraa to the beach for you
This worked perfect for my application! I search high and low for a good how to, and I almost gave up! You are the best out there in my opinion! Great work!
Thank you!! I’m glad you found the video!!
Thank you! I was confused as hell trying to set up Zone 2 for my Onkyo TX-NR585. I scoured the internet ant the manual and was still confused, especially as a person who knows nothing about AV equipment. Your video cleared everything up. Onkyo should be paying you.
I want to thank you for your easy to understand info. My grandson got ahold of my remote and somehow activated my zone 2 which deactivated my back surround speakers which I couldn’t figure out until I watched your video.. thanks again
super helpful. i got myself an onyko NR686 this past x mas and im looking to use zone 2 for patio speakers. thanks for showing how to enable everything.
I have this one also and couldn’t figure out zone 2 until now. Where you able to set speaker size and speaker volume level ?
love the video...keep up the great work...hello from ontario canada...
Can I use zone2 preout to add 1 pair of speaker to widen the front audio surround?
Great tutorial and overview, thank you for the education
I've had a volume control question with my LR pre-out to a preamp for 3 years that I've finally figured out by watching your video and using Zone 2 pre-outs instead. Thank you!
Hi Greg! What's the question?
@@TechnoDad My house has speakers in the kitchen and dining ceilings that are wired to the family room receiver. The kitchen/dining speakers have volume knobs on the wall. I had been using the main L/R preout on the main receiver to share the same source via Niles preamps to power those speakers. The variable volume on the dining/kitchen speakers was always far lower than on the main family room speakers and I had to have the main speaker volume overly loud to utilize the other speakers (maybe because the builder-grade speakers in the other rooms are not as efficient as the Klipsch CDT-5800-C II’s that I put in the family room). Anyway, after watching your video, it finally dawned on me that I should be using the zone preout instead of sharing the main L/R preout. I very much appreciate the detail you put into your videos. Thanks again!
My plan next is to add 2 klipsch rf 7 iii as my new L/R and change the current front L/R ceiling speakers to Front Presence speakers. Should the rear surround ceiling speakers also be changed to Rear Presence for Atmos? Also, is my Yamaha Aventage RX-A 2070 w/ 150 watts/ch enough to run the 2 new Klipsch RF 7iii? I couldn’t find a ‘range’. Klipsch just lists them as 250 watts. I’ve read several things that say the receiver should have excess power and some say that’s not necessary. I could add something like a Crown XLS 2502 if excess power is needed.
Thanks buddy, very helpful.
You're very welcome!
Thanks, this video helped me get my Zone 2 working on my Pioneer LX305 in 2022. Had to go into Config and turn on the Zone 2 option.
Great video! I am not sound techy at all, I have zone 2 working but only for 1 output, if I try the others it won’t work. Any advice?
Still liking the TX-NR686? Easiest gui and love the EQ on it.
can you do this with the Denon -1400X with dolby atmos and dts-X and crossover 4 speakers thanks
I think it's pretty cumbersome to have zone 2 in another room. I think it's best for use in the same room with 2 diff main speakers. One for movies and one for music.
I use Zone 2 for my outdoor speakers.
@terrycole2407 can you control the volume independently from the zone 1
great video bro,i subbed,i love this HIFI stereo sheet
Ayyyy!! Welcome to the community!
Great video! This only works for Stereo though correct? I have the Onkyo RZ 730 and I was only able to get the built in streaming audio an analog audio to play through going to preouts. I even switched my 4K fire TV to stereo and it still did not work.
I have a Onkyo TX-NR555, I thougth I could record with it, but I can't , so can I add another receiver on Zone 2 to record with, an play it back throw my Onkyo
Thanks my dear for your helpful tips.
You're welcome!
Thanks for the solution. FYI, also works for RZ710. For those who just want the answer, tune into 8:45.
I’m using this for my yard pool music 5-channel Stereo in daytime and at night for portable movie projector where I switch over to 5.1 surround. Zone 2 is for the fire pit area when I just want to chill and not have the main speakers going. This video helped me get the zone 2 going Thanks
I never regret that i subscribed to your channel even though i don't have * all those chickens * 😉
Thank you dreamer! I truly appreciate you!
Great information, I just recently purchased a small amp and used the rca line out puts and nothing worked but know I see why because I didn’t take off zone 2 from menu.. How can I set up zone 2 if I do get a small amp to hear the TV also especially for football games. I would like to hear the game from the kitchen table on my ceiling’s speakers and not just in the living room area. Thanks
Can you output HDMI from BluRay player to Zone 2? Trying to send a signal to cassette recorder.
Great video! So here's what I'm looking to do. I am in a HUGE basement that has a few separate areas. There is one area in which my band rehearses. Next to that (still open area) is my "Media area" where I have a 70" TV and my Onkyo TX-SR393 5.2 Surround system with Atmos. Then I have another area around the corner where I have couches and and an area to dance (yes....it will probably be just a sit and talk area more than dancing). There are 2 Pioneer bookshelf speakers there and 2 Sony speakers in another area hooked up to my Insignia receiver.
SO.....I know that I will NEVER be watching a movie with Surround Sound while people are chatting over in the sitting area. I want to basically just be able to use Zone 2 (Onkyo calls it Zone B on this unit) to add the sound from my CD player/Tuner or Turntable from my Onkyo system over to the Insignia receiver to the Pioneer and Sony speakers (using the Zone B outputs and Aux input on the Insignia receiver). I don't really want Atmos to be on when I do that so I guess I should turn on the Zone 2 configuration. Does that sound about right? Then I guess I can control the Pioneer and Sony speakers in the sitting area with the Zone 2 volume.
I hope that was clear as mud :) Can you tell me if I actually know what I'm doing or if not, can you help? Thanks!
I have TV in another room with sound bar. How to enable video on sub along with audio on subwoofer.
thank you so much. I have just recently upgraded to 5.1.2 in my main living room, but there are times when I'm in my kitchen cooking and still would like to hear the TV or movie that is playing. Im going to add 2 in ceiling speakers connected this way just to mirror audio. I know it isn't perfect.. but it should be better than it is now. And for music it will be great
Great video!! Helped a lot. Also with this receiver can I use zone two with pre outs for a 5.1.4 set up?
I'm using zone 2 for two different rooms but need to leave the zone setting on in setup. In-room one, I'm using the wired connectors which use the TX-NZ676 amp's volume to drive the speakers. In the second room, I'm using the RCA zone 2 connected to speakers with volume control. Really the two rooms are a front porch and a rear porch. The front porch is wireless with volume control. You should also check out the Onkyo Controller app which allow you do controll everything from your smart phone. This is the best amp ever!
Awesome! I just downloaded the app for the full review of this AVR.
What about a microphone mixer for like Karoke. Will this work
Great vid. I'm setting up my new Onkyo TX-NR696... appears to be a similar layout. In my case, my zone 2 is in the same room. (It's a large open space in the basement) I would like Zone 2 to play the same source as the main zone. Is that the same setup? Another thing is that I have six speakers in Zone 2. Thanks.
Another excellent helpfull advice thanks keep up excellent content
Thank you for watching!
With my DENON 9ch it has zone 2 and 3 in the pre out section not the line out terminals as for volume I can set the vol for zone 2 or 3 independent. So on the main menu it’s on so I can still pass it through. If I turn it off not sure if the AVR will pass it out or not.
have a question, i lost my befree remote! is there anyway i can control audio without buying another system
Very informative and straightforward. I really like the way Onkyo implemented the zone's volume control.
Do you have any experience with how it's done with Denon's receivers. I'm currently having a hard time deciding between two models: Onkyo TX-NR787 (2018) and Denon AVRS750H (2019).
Thanks! :)
Thanks for the great video. I'm in the process of setting up 2 zones for outdoor garden (2 pairs of L&R Speakers for 2 zones) and looking to use this amplifier. I want the same sound output in both zones, but be able to control the volumes independently through the mobile app, is this possible? I intent to use the built in chrome cast audio functionality for the sound source in both zones.
Hi! I think that's what it's intended to do. I'm not sure if you can control both volumes from the app. I haven't had an Onkyo in house fora while so I don't really remember.
How can I connect an external audiosource spectrum graphic eq to a newer receiver? Will zone 2 work for the tape monitor inputs?
Thanks for the help YOUR GREAT love your channel!!! Could you also help me with one more thing.
Could you tell me pros or cons with 8 ohm speakers to a 6 ohm receiver thanks again!!
Hi Payton! Thank you so much for watching! To answer your question, there isn’t a problem with you connecting 8 ohm speakers to an amp that has a 6 ohm rating. It just means that the amp is stable at 6 ohms. I would be worried if you had speakers that were 4 ohms and you had an amp that was only stable at 6 ohms. So as long as the speaker has an equal ohm number or higher, then you should be good to go!
I've discovered DTS Play-Fi Which makes a Zone 2 setup more appealing. Do you know how to add a Subwoofer to Zone 2?
Can I keep Atoms 7.1 if I run bi-wire front speakers on a Onkyo TX-NR 787
I have the Sony STRDN1080 and another much older Sony STRD1015 AVR. Which input would I plug the cable to on the old AVR from the 1080 zone 2 out?
Nice vid!BTW , where did u get acoustic foam?
Dang, i was looking for info on setting up Zone 2 on a Marantz SR5015. Totally different menus
What about zone 2 rcas to let forsay I'm Denon amp to power zone 2. If I run rca line out will this keep hight channels in main room? Never mind... So would my onoko sound better if I were to run zone 2 to my Klipsch via Denon amp in to dedicated so I get full clean power to fronts and wire fronts to my Denon amp and not onoko right left? This would take pressure of my onoko amp no?
So do you connect the surround back speakers in the same spot as zone 2 speakers?
Dear Techno Dad
Thanx for a great video, I d like to ask, if your explanations are applicable for Denon Avr-X2600h & Marantz PM 8005 pair (I ve 5.1.2 config), I be connected zone 2 to Marantz but I lost 5.1.2 , it only works with All-Ch-Stereo config only :/
So this works with onkyo receivers all the way back to the Dtr 5.5 but i have an issue where the signal output level from the onkyo isn't powerful enough to send a high enough input source for my rear amplifier. So if you do this you might need to run a low to high level signal converter.
can i add a passive subwoofer ( BOSE ACOUSTIMASS 5 SERIES II ) to a ONKYO TX-NR686
Can I use the extra amp to help the receiver power more speakers? I have the onkyo 777 and the onkyo amp A 9050
Hey, I have a pioneer 7.2 channel receiver and I want to be able to watch tv while also be able to listen to music outside at the same time. I have a 5.1 setup for the tv so I wanted to ask you that if I connect my outside speakers to zone 2 like you did at 3:52, would I be able to play music and watch T.V at the same time without an additional amp (halo integrated amp).
Hi, thanks for the video, very helpful.
I have what I think is a really obvious question but cant find an answer anywhere. I basically am using Zone 2 in the same room for Music and main amp for movies. I have everything running fine but I cant work out how to change any of the zone 2 audio settings, i.e. bass, treble or different presets. Does anyone know if you can do this? Thanks.
I don’t think you can do it halo bypasses all preamp settings, and Onkyo leaves DRM OUT OF THE SUGNAL PATH. AM I WRON?
Hey Techno Dad, I have an Onkyo TX-NR676 set up for Zone 2... in fact, Zone 2 works beautifully with access to all sources of analog as well as digital. HOWEVER, I can now only play the built-in tuner on the main!!!! No other sound will come through on the main. Any ideas why????
I have a pioneer receiver sc-25 and I was wondering how to connect more speakers. Can I connect an extra receiver from the pre output on my pioneer sc-25 receiver? And can I connect those rca to the multi channel input on my second receiver?
Can you synchronize zone 2 to main zone? I have an open kitchen, so would like to have 5.1 surround on couch and 2.0 in the kitchen. Unfortunately while testing I have some delay between the main zone and zone 2. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or is the ONKYO not syncing at all the zones...
Awesome! In my case I tried attaching my Schiit Magni 2 to Zone 2 out and then use the Magni to plug in headphones so my wife can listen via the speakers and I can listen using headphones because of my significant hearing loss, however, the problem I run into is that I've not been able to figure out how to work around the fact that you can only use an analog source using this method and not digital like from our HTPC connected via HDMI.
Hi, did you solve this problem? I want to buy Schiit Magni 3, connect it to Onkyo 676 and use digital source (hdmi) from pc.
@@jacksmith6257 I gave up for the time being and just crank up my shitty hearing aids.
can i connect two onkyo 7.1 receivers with 16 speakers?
Can zone 2 mirror zone 1? Also can zone 2 be my center channel or something similar for my main zone
For Onkyo TX-8270 receiver, how do I connect a Rockville graphic equalizer model REQ20? I’ve tried several simple ways but no success. Could use your input on this matter.
What if you want to use a second set of speakers that you want to use for "pure" audio for music? In other words 5.1 set "a" second set R&L stereo speaker set "b"? Can you select zone 2, pick the source and mute the 5.1?
I have the NR6050 and want to use my Time frames tf700 for music.
If you tell your Onkyo that Zone 2 is off (but you use the speaker outs for Zone 2), how does the Onkyo know what alternate source to use for the Zone 2 pre-outs?
Can I still use the connected sub woofer for zone 2? All speakers including zone 2 are actually in the same room
Hey Technodad, good video. I have a Denon DRA-800H Receiver with Zone 2 preouts. I purchased a IOTA SA3 integrated Amp . The Iota Has ine in inputs. But when i connect the Denons preouts to the line in inputs on the IOTA , i get nothing from the connected speakers? I doubled check that zone 2 was turned on and no souce played on the Denon could be heard? I've seen separate Amps (Emotiva and IOTA), that have Aux In inputs. Shouldnt the integrated IOTA amp work? Thx for any advice out there in audiophile land. PS, I only use the Denon for 2.1 stereo currently.
Do you go to the TV settings to add the Onkyo AV device for the Zone 2 to set it up? Thanks
Have the same receiver and can’t get Dolby Atmos to turn on! Please advise
How do you control zone 2 with the Remote? Rc-911R
I personally would like a zone 2 so I can send video signal to an AVR in another room from my cable box in my Home Theatre. That way I can get cable in 2 rooms without having to pay $10 in perpetuity to rent a second box. The downside or trade off is having to be in the next room to operate the cable box remote and only being able to use the cable source in 1 room at a time. Im not sure that level of functionality would be worth it or not.
Thank you for this great video. I've read that I can only use analog inputs for zone 2 but can I listen to Spotify or Deezer in zone 2?
For RZ710, you can use any input for main vs. zone 2. NR676 and RZ710 are quite similar (e.g. this solution worked for RZ710 too). It is also quite easy to try, either press on Zone 2 button and the input as Techno Dad showed. Or you can switch your remote to Zone 2 by holding bottom left corner button ("clear") and Zone 2 button (2 up, 1 to the right) until the remote blinks with red light. You can switch back to main zone by holding the same clear button and Main button (2 up).
Thank you for this video, i had a question, I still cant get sound and not worried about atmos. I have zone 2 selected at screen page, I have zone 2 terminal speaker out to a 6 ch distro which has its own volume control, plus i have volume control on walls. I see that pwrd z2 notact, Its not working. Do i need an amp?
Hi can i use zone 2 output for large front speaker with extra power amplifier attached.
Thanks for this video. I am in a very wired technical situation. I do have Bose 907 and you know those speakers really need preamp output for the EQ device then the signal can be processed by the power amp for final output. I want to keep the Atmos setup, I want to take the pre out put from onkyo for bose speakers, set the EQ then I want to send the out put to another power amp. My question is .. can we control all the audio from Onkyo speakers as well for other speakers those were connected by the preamp connection.
does it mean that the true power ratings would matter more now for those zones meaning: More zones means using more channels indirectly ?
Are better take zone 2 off when i use svs high front dolby have onyko 696 still learn on it after have own near 1 year and always love u video help me some settings :) greeting from iceland in reykjavík and 1 more are better use raw to get better sound ?
Hi Techno Dad. Just bought this receiver. Is it possible to have both zone 1 & 2 play from the same source, say SAT music from direct TV? Tried but no sound came from my zone 2 speakers. Help! Thx
It would be nice to make the Zone 2 the rear height speaker output.
Yeah, for a 9 channel avr, you'll need to step up to the Onkyo NR787 (amzn.to/2SizHVb) but it's $599.
I got the same amplifier bought at best buy for a steal..the thing is my apple 4k TV plays Dolby atmos supposedly...but I cant get it to wrk..only my xbox one x will do this.i tried everything nothing seems to work.its frustrating and it seems after browsing the web for this issue that it is a common problem.do you know how to get this fixed?
Thx in advance techno pappy...😀
Can I use the same input for both zones?
To be honest, volume control is so important no matter what room you are, I would prefer 2 AVR's or simply powered speakers.. Tell me if I not missing anything? I rather buy a second hand AVR instead of running long RCA cables and get the job done, independent controls :) May be good for showrooms or other scenarios
Is anyone using this receiver with an amp? I’m using a tube amp ans have the cables hook up to the zone 2 option in the back but I’m not getting any sound.
If you're turning off Zone 2 amplification then what is the benefit of running the locally attached player via the Onkyo on to another integrated amplifier? Purely source selection at the slight expense of audio quality?
Basically yup... This is not how this functionality was meant to be used. TV on 5.1 max + zone 2 - 2.0... That's it.
How bout using the 2 preouts for a series X and a Samsung Q90 since on the Samsung the arc is input 3 and input 4 is the game port.any suggestions?
I got a 7.2 reciever. Done it as a 5.2.2. My question is can I use zone two as yet another height channel which basically im trying to pull a 5.2.4 out of my reciever
I am wondering the same thing!
Hi, can someone healp, can i use a bluetooth device in zone 2 in the reciver, i have the Onkyo TX NR696
sir how can i connect speaker and my laptop on my onkyo tx-sr603 av reciever
Just hope and pray no parts go out on these receivers I had to send line off it took a year-and-a-half almost 2 years to get my pieces and sent back unbelievable.
Is it possible to hook my Onkyo Integra M-504 Power Amplifier to my P-301 Preamplifier to my Onkyo TX-NR656 AV Receiver through Zone 2 output, and if so is the set up in the same?
Hello,
I am trying to do the same with my Denon amp 4500 H Any help or any videos on that? any help is appretiated!
You sure know your stuff. All I want is to play the same music on zone 1 and zone 2 at the same time and sometimes only one at a time. Can I do that and is it easy to toggle back and forth?
That’s what I want to do also. Have surround going when watching tv. Then sometimes activate extra speakers in the rest of my basement playing music. Right now I have an old receiver with a a/b switch playing in stereo.
i have two 7.1 recievers....can i use zone 2 to add rear heights or power other speakers?
Hey I got a SVS pb-16 ultra can I use this receiver on it or not?
Hello i have the Onkyo TX-NR676 7.2
are the SKF- 540 F and SKF-540 C front speakers a good fit?
staying with the Onkyo brand what is the best Powered sub for this unit?
thank you.
I know that's late but is possible to i do tv and projector in the same receiver? is the same way of the zone one and two?
Please can you help me . My onkyo only say zone 2 power notact what is that? Thank you
Can you play zone 2 and the main zone at the same time?
You can if you use the non amped outputs located near the subwoofer outs
This is rad. Anyone know if this will work all the same with the onkyo nr575?
If I am streaming a movie on TV that is connected through HDMI ARC cable, can I also have a signal on Line Out terminals OR I must use two different sources to use Zone 2 Line out? Thanks.
Thank you! Can zone 2 play the same source as the primary zone?
I have this same question. I have a sub output for video in a second room and can mirror the video output but can't get the same audio.
Can I add a amplifer to power my zone 2 pre outs to transform my 5.1.2 to a 5.1.4?
Love your channel! I have a second centre channel speaker connected in series to the original speaker in my 5.1 system. Do you know of a simple ..switch?.. to bypass the second speaker when it’s not required?
Like a speaker selector? They should be easy to find - amzn.to/41gBH4c
Kindly advise me how can I upgrade this AVR to 5.1.4 channel
Ok, I have the 676. Can you listen to the main and zone 2 with the same source? So when I am having a party I can listen to the same thing in my living room and backyard (zone 2). Can you listen to Chromecast on zone 2, I can’t seem to get that to work.
Hi Eric! What kind of source is the chromecast? Digital or analog? I think you can only send an analog signal to Zone 2
Thanks
You're welcome!
