This video is the first to easy explain the "top front" , "top middle" to me. I'm in a situation, which I've seen others as well, to decide on which one to choose from. All 9 channels can be powered at the same time..... sorry to contradict you there, but I have this set up with all 9 shakers being powered as well as 3 subs running... front left, front right, center, two height ceiling mounted speakers, two side surround speakers and two rear surround speakers. Using two preamps for the subs, and piggy backing off one sub with a Y to the front sub.

I just grabbed the 686 for 296 after tax from Best Buy. Gonna try to set up Atmos with some old Bose speakers I have. Btw the 686 model is still on sale as of 1/1/2020.
I have the new NR797 and all my contents for Atmos were in NAS. No dice! All shows is MCH PCH either 5.1 or 7.1 looks like they show only on itunes store. Netflix atmos dont show as well. I dont have any problem with DV
You could have continue with speaker setup the one you did is for in-ceiling speakers just for you info i did the same thing i don't know if it makes a difference or not to me it sounds better.
It's cool that you posted this. I purchased this receiver in August when it was $450. It plays Atmos/DTS:X etc as well HDR & Dolby Vision which was important since I have an LG OLED 65E6. I was going with a pretty basic Atmos set up since I live in a building & knew I would drive the neighbors crazy if I went all out....but they still bang on the floor from time to time LoL Anyways, at the time, I also purchased Polk T50 floors ($100 each), Polk T30 center($100), Polk PSW10 sub($100) ELAC A4 Debut up-firing Atmos($220) and I had a previous wireless rear setup using some old Pioneer satellite speakers. I remember when I was doing my homework on the Atmos speakers, people were saying it was hit or miss with the up-firing but I took a chance and they actually work beautifully in my apt. As far as the receiver, I've had no issues and it's performed great for me as well. Plenty powerful enough for my current living. To be honest, I don't think I've ever went passed volume level 65 lol Thanks again for uploading this vid. Actually let me edit this real quick. Question, if I wanted to add another pair of Atmos up-firing for the rears, how could I go about adding them to this receiver? I would need an amp, correct? Any moderately priced amps you'd recommend?
Hey!! I'm glad you're enjoying your Atmos experience! Unfortunately, you'll need a new AVR if you're trying to add two more Atmos channels. You'll need something that can process and power 9 channels all together. This one will only process and power 7 channels. The 9 channel AVRs start out around $1,200 - $1,500 and go up from there. If you can find a Denon AVR-X4300H still around, you might be able to get one for around $1k.
I also have this model. Installed 5.1.2 speakers. Why don't the two speakers on the roof sound? Do they only sound when watching movies? They don't sound when listening to music. Thank you

I have a Onkyo 608 .& 304 and 803 with a Outlaw 5000 X in the living room. Maybe it’s the room size or speakers but the 686 sounds the best ..Question is ; if I add more speakers to the NR 686 go from 5.1 to 7.2 or 5.2.2 will it output less ? I realize this is pretty much a entry level ( no preouts) but it has WIFi & Bluetooth & I got it at a great price..

I've got a awesome turntable made by Garrard the Garrard 990b with a audio technica at95e cartridge on it too great sound from albums also . Do you mean the Netflix app on the TV? There are two settings you need to set on the TV to get ARC working. You have to set the audio to output to the HDMI (ARC) and then turn on CEC on the TV as well.
I'll say this from the short time I've had it. I'm impressed with the amount of HDMI inputs and the high quality AKM DAC. For such a low price point, I think this is a very versatile AVR.

I have a onkyo NR 686 7.2 receiver but unable to configure 7.2 in speaker setup even after connecting 2 active subwoofer in separate ports given for sub. Still setup options shows only 7.1 and not 7.2. Could you please help.
I just picked one of these up, but I'm trying to decide if I should build a 7.1 setup or 5.1.2 Atmos setup. I have the ability to do in-ceiling mounted speakers, but I'm wondering about practicality and usage... Will the Atmos speakers only play content on Atmos enabled media, or is the receiver capable of taking Dolby Digital Plus on non-Atmos media and still play 3D content out of those height speakers? Basically, if I do not watch Atmos movies that often, is 7.1 a better route? Or will 5.1.2 still give same audio output as 7.1 on non-Atmos content? Thank you for your help!
@@richardmyers7181 - My question was for basic two channel stereo and 5.1 input signals being able to expand playback on every epeaker in 5.1.2 or 7.1 setups. Since I am now several months into it, I'll answer for those with similar questions. The short answer is yes, DTS:NeuralX and Dolby Surround are the two listening formats you can manually choose that will decode and upscale stereo or 5.1 signal inputs to playback on your full system, regardless of your speaker layout/setup. As for 5.1.2 vs 7.1, I went with 5.1.2 because it seems like Atmos keeps getting stronger in the future of DD+ (especially for digital streaming), with more support than ever coming out every few months. On the other hand, "true" 7.1 seems to be very hard to come by these days.
@@epepmeneses6976 Incorrect. The centers on 7.1 are head height, therefore you cannot have full 360 "bubble" object based mixing that Atmos/DTS:X offers. When you upmix DTS:X in a 7.1 or 5.1 system, it is still processed as 2D based soundstage because everything is on the same plane. There is no height element or 3D soundstage that Atmos provides.
I seriosuly can't get my Samsung TV sound working via ARC. HDMI is connected on TV's ARC Input and HDMI Main Out (ARC) on the receiver. Initial Speakers setup completed with 5.1 but never could get the TV sound working. Onkyo Settings: Hardware>HDMI>HDMI CEC:On and Anytime+(HDMI+CEC) Enabled on the Samsung tv. Changed cables. Still no sound? Please help.
Hi! So I could only choose between 4 or 6 ohms. Speakers with 8 ohms have more resistance than both of those so it made sense to me to choose 6 as its closer to 8 ohms.
Everything says this receiver can go at 8 ohms. I am in the process of replacing a 15 year old Panasonic Sa-HE70 which only supports 6 ohms. Maybe you can clarify for those of us trying to make heads or tails of this. Your videos and content are awesome, price points on the money, thank you.
The manual says - ‘Set the impedance (Ω) of the connected speakers. "4ohms": When any of the connected speakers have 4 Ω or more to less than 6 Ω impedance. "6ohms": When the connected speakers all have 6 Ω or more impedance’
My onkyo sr-444 reciver is getting dolby atmos as input. But not delivering atmos in output. It shows only 7.1 as output. Please help me to sort out this issue. Anyhow the blue light is blinking when atmos content is streamed from apple uv 4k
Dumb question so please excuse me. If i where to buy for instance the Onkyo TX-NR676 (or something similar), and Use a 5.1.2 setup. or using klipsch setup. If i connect my TV to the Receiver using HDMI ARC (tv supports it to) If i then connect my PC, Playstion and Xbox ONLY to my TV using HDMI, will i then still get the sound via the Reciever?? Or do i still need to connect the individually to the receiver and tv?
Hi there, I have the TX-NR696 which I have configured as a 5.1.2. However when you scroll through the sound option, it doesn't give me the Atmos option. Listening mode flicks between Dolby , DolbyX and others but no Atmos. What setting should I leave this setting when watching a movie pls? I also noticed that the center speaker doesn't get a workout compared to my 20y.o Marantz. Voice seems to come over through the L and R Towers more than the centre. Any help would be great thanks.

I have an ONKYO TX-NR 686 with is great...I have set it up for Dolby Atmos (my new PHILIPS 65 OLED 805/12,, (2020) TAKES ALSO Dolby Atmos..) AND I HAVE AN NVIDIA SHIELD (2017) and I have set it up so it plays HDR /Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos ..) I had to set it to 4K , 23,976Hz HDR10 ready for then it takes the DISNEY channels with HDR and Dolby Atmos.......BUT my problem is: I don't hear very much of my 4 speakers (in the roof-montage...) still I have set them at +12db, and the rest pretty normal...... so what do I do ? can I put an extra Amp, between my ONKYO and roof speakers? or?????? I've had the NR656 for a while, but just installed ceiling speakers and set it up in a 5.1.2 configuration yesterday. I actually let Audessy handle the configuration. My dumb question is, when watching a movie, do I need to manually set the AVR in Atmos movie mode, or should it be getting that information from the player/disc and set the movie mode automatically? Can you look at the vsx lx301 and I would love a demo disk. Just got my def tech setup finished... 5.1.2. got the 9020 towers with the 9040 center and the d7s as surrounds and the Polk in ceiling speakers which rock. No true sub as this thing is thumping as I have the lfe hooked up. Love the channel.

I have just bought an Onkyo 608 (i know quite old) not tech-savvy though. I have run the projector through the HDMI output (picture fine). I have a fire stick in one of the HDMI inputs but I get no sound. As before I'm not a guru when it comes to amps and inputs etc. Am I missing something really obvious? It never came with a calibration mic and i don't know what the previous owner had as settings. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi Timothy!! Yes, Atmos is very effective with just two height channels!! I've been rockin' 5.1.2 for over a year now and it's awesome! Since I have the Klipsch RP-140SAs mounted up at the ceiling, I don't need to rely on gimmicky ceiling bounce.

Sorry im late to the party but hope you can answer my question, I have this AV with a 5.1.2 set up, my "atmos" speakers are actually height speakers angled to my MLP. I have them set to front height but I heard you say you have yours set to "Top middle". Would you say I should change mine to this setting also?
Hi Cloudz! You can try it out and see what happens. I can't really tell if it would be better as I am not at your home. So watch your favorite Atmos scene and then switch it, and then watch the scene again. See if you notice a difference.

Hi! I would still go with a proper setup. Focal Sib 5.1 on sale for $399 (go.magik.ly/ml/ap70/) and Onkyo TX-NR676 on sale for $339 (amzn.to/2JmbeuG). I think that would be better than a soundbar or that HTIB. You'll have to add some atmos modules, which would put you around the $900 price range. OR, you could use that extra money on speaker cables/stands and get the Atmos modules later. Focal makes some proper speakers and that 5.1 set is normally $800. Pretty good deal if you ask me!
I have the big brother TX-NR777 AVR which comes with 10 Watts more power and is also THX certified. I can't believe the ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 bookshelf speakers are still selling for five hundred bucks. I picked my pair up at Christmas time for three fifty. It would be cool if you could get a hold of those 4 Ohm speakers and test them out on your various amps.

for some reason, i can't get my subwoofer to work. I just hooked it up. I am using the subwoofer that came with the onkyo r340 system that i bought 10 years ago. it's not being detected and no sound is coming from it. It is powered by the receiver completely and doesn't have any other wires besides speaker wires that connect directly to the receiver. do you have any idea why it's not working?
I have a question that it’s not related to Onkyo , but didn’t find a better place to ask . I have denon 4310ci which is an old but beast amp (to me ) , I picked denon x4400H recently and hooked it up , I feel my 4310 has more power I can sense that in my rf82ii and rc62 , the reason for picking up this receiver was 4K pass through and WiFi/Bluetooth capability oh and Atmos in future of course , question is , can I hook up both denons and somehow use the power of the 4310ci and tech of the 4400h ? Or what’s the suggestion on having these two Ave receivers and putting both to work cuz I won’t get rid of that 4310 , I still love it after nearly a decade Thanks.

I hope you can help me, my Onkyo receiver got reinstalled after a move, plugged everything in and powered on and there was sound, changed the input from can/sat to DVD to watch a movie and the sound was gone. When I hit the info button the audio input/output is just blank no information displayed. Would you know how to fix this???

I have TX-NR575E, I want to buy speakers for it, stuck between Jamo S809 5.0 and Jamo C95 II 5.0. Best advice, please. C95 II is more good looking I know, just one speaker less and more expensive compared to S809

I've got a awesome turntable made by Garrard the Garrard 990b with a audio technica at95e cartridge on it too great sound from albums also . Do you mean the Netflix app on the TV? There are two settings you need to set on the TV to get ARC working. You have to set the audio to output to the HDMI (ARC) and then turn on CEC on the TV as well.

I'll say this from the short time I've had it. I'm impressed with the amount of HDMI inputs and the high quality AKM DAC. For such a low price point, I think this is a very versatile AVR.

Hi! Yeah, I'm liking it so far. I have it connected to the SVS Prime Satellite 5.1 system and it's doing a great job. I'm not a huge fan of the green display but I've only had it for a day, we will see when I do my full review in a few weeks.

I have a onkyo NR 686 7.2 receiver but unable to configure 7.2 in speaker setup even after connecting 2 active subwoofer in separate ports given for sub. Still setup options shows only 7.1 and not 7.2. Could you please help.
I just picked one of these up, but I'm trying to decide if I should build a 7.1 setup or 5.1.2 Atmos setup. I have the ability to do in-ceiling mounted speakers, but I'm wondering about practicality and usage... Will the Atmos speakers only play content on Atmos enabled media, or is the receiver capable of taking Dolby Digital Plus on non-Atmos media and still play 3D content out of those height speakers? Basically, if I do not watch Atmos movies that often, is 7.1 a better route? Or will 5.1.2 still give same audio output as 7.1 on non-Atmos content? Thank you for your help!
@@richardmyers7181 - My question was for basic two channel stereo and 5.1 input signals being able to expand playback on every epeaker in 5.1.2 or 7.1 setups. Since I am now several months into it, I'll answer for those with similar questions. The short answer is yes, DTS:NeuralX and Dolby Surround are the two listening formats you can manually choose that will decode and upscale stereo or 5.1 signal inputs to playback on your full system, regardless of your speaker layout/setup. As for 5.1.2 vs 7.1, I went with 5.1.2 because it seems like Atmos keeps getting stronger in the future of DD+ (especially for digital streaming), with more support than ever coming out every few months. On the other hand, "true" 7.1 seems to be very hard to come by these days.

@@epepmeneses6976 Incorrect. The centers on 7.1 are head height, therefore you cannot have full 360 "bubble" object based mixing that Atmos/DTS:X offers. When you upmix DTS:X in a 7.1 or 5.1 system, it is still processed as 2D based soundstage because everything is on the same plane. There is no height element or 3D soundstage that Atmos provides.
I seriosuly can't get my Samsung TV sound working via ARC. HDMI is connected on TV's ARC Input and HDMI Main Out (ARC) on the receiver. Initial Speakers setup completed with 5.1 but never could get the TV sound working. Onkyo Settings: Hardware>HDMI>HDMI CEC:On and Anytime+(HDMI+CEC) Enabled on the Samsung tv. Changed cables. Still no sound? Please help.
Your speakers are 8ohms rated, but you set them up at 6ohms saying that it makes more sense. Could you explain a bit why. Thanks.
Hi! So I could only choose between 4 or 6 ohms. Speakers with 8 ohms have more resistance than both of those so it made sense to me to choose 6 as its closer to 8 ohms.
To tag on that, all the literatures show it can do 8 ohm, why cant that be selected or how would you make 8 ohm? Cuz even their website says 8 ohm
Everything says this receiver can go at 8 ohms. I am in the process of replacing a 15 year old Panasonic Sa-HE70 which only supports 6 ohms. Maybe you can clarify for those of us trying to make heads or tails of this. Your videos and content are awesome, price points on the money, thank you.
The manual says - ‘Set the impedance (Ω) of the connected speakers. "4ohms": When any of the connected speakers have 4 Ω or more to less than 6 Ω impedance. "6ohms": When the connected speakers all have 6 Ω or more impedance’

Hi there, I have the TX-NR696 which I have configured as a 5.1.2. However when you scroll through the sound option, it doesn't give me the Atmos option. Listening mode flicks between Dolby , DolbyX and others but no Atmos. What setting should I leave this setting when watching a movie pls? I also noticed that the center speaker doesn't get a workout compared to my 20y.o Marantz. Voice seems to come over through the L and R Towers more than the centre. Any help would be great thanks.

I have an ONKYO TX-NR 686 with is great...I have set it up for Dolby Atmos (my new PHILIPS 65 OLED 805/12,, (2020) TAKES ALSO Dolby Atmos..) AND I HAVE AN NVIDIA SHIELD (2017) and I have set it up so it plays HDR /Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos ..) I had to set it to 4K , 23,976Hz HDR10 ready for then it takes the DISNEY channels with HDR and Dolby Atmos.......BUT my problem is: I don't hear very much of my 4 speakers (in the roof-montage...) still I have set them at +12db, and the rest pretty normal...... so what do I do ? can I put an extra Amp, between my ONKYO and roof speakers? or??????

I've had the NR656 for a while, but just installed ceiling speakers and set it up in a 5.1.2 configuration yesterday. I actually let Audessy handle the configuration. My dumb question is, when watching a movie, do I need to manually set the AVR in Atmos movie mode, or should it be getting that information from the player/disc and set the movie mode automatically? Can you look at the vsx lx301 and I would love a demo disk. Just got my def tech setup finished... 5.1.2. got the 9020 towers with the 9040 center and the d7s as surrounds and the Polk in ceiling speakers which rock. No true sub as this thing is thumping as I have the lfe hooked up. Love the channel.

I have just bought an Onkyo 608 (i know quite old) not tech-savvy though. I have run the projector through the HDMI output (picture fine). I have a fire stick in one of the HDMI inputs but I get no sound. As before I'm not a guru when it comes to amps and inputs etc. Am I missing something really obvious? It never came with a calibration mic and i don't know what the previous owner had as settings. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi Timothy!! Yes, Atmos is very effective with just two height channels!! I've been rockin' 5.1.2 for over a year now and it's awesome! Since I have the Klipsch RP-140SAs mounted up at the ceiling, I don't need to rely on gimmicky ceiling bounce.

Sorry im late to the party but hope you can answer my question, I have this AV with a 5.1.2 set up, my "atmos" speakers are actually height speakers angled to my MLP. I have them set to front height but I heard you say you have yours set to "Top middle". Would you say I should change mine to this setting also?
Hi Cloudz! You can try it out and see what happens. I can't really tell if it would be better as I am not at your home. So watch your favorite Atmos scene and then switch it, and then watch the scene again. See if you notice a difference.

Hi! I would still go with a proper setup. Focal Sib 5.1 on sale for $399 (go.magik.ly/ml/ap70/) and Onkyo TX-NR676 on sale for $339 (amzn.to/2JmbeuG). I think that would be better than a soundbar or that HTIB. You'll have to add some atmos modules, which would put you around the $900 price range. OR, you could use that extra money on speaker cables/stands and get the Atmos modules later. Focal makes some proper speakers and that 5.1 set is normally $800. Pretty good deal if you ask me!

I have the big brother TX-NR777 AVR which comes with 10 Watts more power and is also THX certified. I can't believe the ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 bookshelf speakers are still selling for five hundred bucks. I picked my pair up at Christmas time for three fifty. It would be cool if you could get a hold of those 4 Ohm speakers and test them out on your various amps.

You have to have Atmos content and the 4K player needs to be outputting audio via bitstream.

for some reason, i can't get my subwoofer to work. I just hooked it up. I am using the subwoofer that came with the onkyo r340 system that i bought 10 years ago. it's not being detected and no sound is coming from it. It is powered by the receiver completely and doesn't have any other wires besides speaker wires that connect directly to the receiver. do you have any idea why it's not working?

I have denon 4310ci which is an old but beast amp (to me ) , I picked denon x4400H recently and hooked it up , I feel my 4310 has more power I can sense that in my rf82ii and rc62 , the reason for picking up this receiver was 4K pass through and WiFi/Bluetooth capability oh and Atmos in future of course , question is , can I hook up both denons and somehow use the power of the 4310ci and tech of the 4400h ?
Or what’s the suggestion on having these two Ave receivers and putting both to work cuz I won’t get rid of that 4310 , I still love it after nearly a decade

Yeah, there’s always going to be an A/V sync issue when using Bluetooth.
I hope you can help me, my Onkyo receiver got reinstalled after a move, plugged everything in and powered on and there was sound, changed the input from can/sat to DVD to watch a movie and the sound was gone. When I hit the info button the audio input/output is just blank no information displayed. Would you know how to fix this???
