We’ve all been there Doug. Sometimes it’s best to walk away, get a clear head come back and sometimes you immediately figure it out after you’ve had some time away from the situation. Let me know if you run into any further issues. Happy to help if I can. And thanks for the sub!
Very nice overview. I would have liked to have seen you quickly discuss 12v triggers and possibly also IR inputs - but regardless this is a good intro for someone that has no idea where to begin. Thanks for your efforts and all the content you put out Youthman! 👊
Amps come with a 3.5mm cable to connect from the 12v trigger on the AVR to the amp. Turn the amps power to on. Now when you turn on the AVR, it “triggers” the amp to turn on. When you turn AVR off, it “triggers” the amp to turn off. That’s it
good step by step set up. But I have an 10+ yr old Yamaha system and all the speakers incl the sub are wired. I am looking to upgrade my receiver as I finally upgraded my tv to an new Sony LED. So my questions is can I use banana plugs for the sub to connect to the receiver?
Can I connect my PS5, PC to the TV (instead of using the HDMI -in ports in the AV receiver) and let the TV send the audio signal to the AV receiver using the e-Arc (just like how a soundbar is setup)? Will it be possible to use the AV receiver this way to power up a dolby atmos setup?
ahh there we go, that explains it. i just bought a pioneer vsx 815 at thrift for $20, using it for my PC speakers (sony bookshelf speakers), wasn't sure if I was supposed to do the bare wire twisty connectors or the pre-out (i'm so used to RCA cables, so i tried the pre-out). no sound.. then i went to the twisty, sound works, but was confused as to what the preout even was. thanks!
Unfortunately, that’s something. I’ve never attempted to do myself. It’s not ideal, but I’ve heard of people that have done it. It just adds a lot of complexity to it.
I have a pair of cerwin vega dx-7 with a pair of dx-3 sitting on top of the dx-7. I'm new to this and was wondering what inputs to use on the receiver and what formation to use in the setup up menu? I'd really appreciate some help!!!
Is it possible to hook up a PS5 to a receiver running a pair of mythos 4 def tech speakers by a projector. I would need b2 HDMI ports on the ps6. One for projector and one for receiver as the projector has no sound just video. Any way to do it???

@@Youthman i want to share with you that my projector as no sound just video so the ps5 goes into the receiver ,the HDMI projects the picture to the projector I thought the ps5 does that I connected the HDMI to the projector from the ps5 and I got the screen up however I don't know how to add the sound... sorry if I am sounding confused... i really appreciate your help and quick responses I subbed...
Sooo if i wanna counnect soundbar to tv and a receiver (speakers) also to tv, how would i do it?, just for i can have a choice to either listen to soundbar or to receiver speakers or to both
Hi. I have the Sony ta-an1000 but when i have connected the tv decoder to CBL/SAT but the sound out is not going to the center speaker but only to the front two speakers. I have a 5.0 speaker setup. I have my Apple TV connected to the media box and here i get full surround with speech through the center speaker. Any ide whats wrong?
This would be by first time setting up a surround sound system and I have started to connect my individual speakers to my audio visual receiver but my sub-woofer has inputs for cords to hook up to speakers as well. My question is should I just connect all of my individual speakers to my subwoofer and then connect my subwoofer to my audio visual receiver or should I connect all my individual speakers to my audio visual receiver and then simply connect my subwoofer to my audio visual receiver.
Connect all individual speakers to your audio visual receiver to its respective amplifer terminals and connect the subwoofer using RCA to Audio visual receiver subwoofer output.
Hi, is it possible to connect two av receiver together for better sound? Meaning the surround speakers to the second receiver for better sound? It is cheaper on market place to buy a used av receiver, not seeing many amplifier for sale.
Is it possible to wirelessly connect SA-RS3S as back speakers, connect SA-SW3 wirelessly, and also connect a wired center channel speaker in AN1000 Sony receiver model?
I was hoping you’d explain how to set up ARC. I have an ARC TV connected to the ARC HDMI but it’s not working, even though I enabled it in the settings in accordance with Denon’s instructions.
There isn't too much to setting up ARC. 1) Both your AVR and TV must have ARC or eARC HDMI ports. 2) Connect an HDMI cable to those two ARC / eARC ports. 3) In your TV's audio settings, enable ARC. 4) I fyou have a Denon or Marantz, go into your Video settings and make sure ARC is enabled. Let me know if that helps.
@@Youthman thanks for the reply ❤️ Unfortunately, I did that already but it’s not working. I’ve been using this exact setup with ARC for a long time so I know everything but that is working fine. 😢 The TV is behaving as if it sees the ARC AVR and is sending the audio there. But I hear nothing. The AVR has HDMI control And TV audio switching turned on.
Question here ! I want to hookup my oldddddd receiver with surround sound to a newer projector, receiver doesn't have HDMI ports; there must be stereo cable to HDMI adapters that will work right??
what's the best way to connect PC to amplifier to have best quality when playing FLACs? My amp have optical in, so I thought maybe I could get audio card for PC with the optical out , do you think it's worth it or just mini jack out analog from PC to the amp would do without much difference?
Hi Michael, I managed to get another 15inch monolith cheap because he is moving to Canada we had a good test but when I got it home I couldn't daisy chain it I am getting no signal from either of the two front one's the led stays on red flashing but I did pull out the rca cable for the sub and it flashed green for a while, if I connect it directly to the amp it works, at the back it has line one and line two,the two front subs I connect the line one to my amp and I connect line two too line one of my rear sub. I am having trouble finding the manual but found the white gloves lol
The LED’s should not flash unless there is an issue with the amp. Hopefully that isn’t the case but I would recommend contacting Monolith support. You should be able to go from the sub out on your AVR to the Line in on one sub, then line out from that sub into Line In on the 2nd sub.
@Youthman just had a bit of sleep and while resting I went throw it in my sleep ,so will rerun it when I get back from work, if no joy then I have a b&w pv1 I shall test it out on. Thanks Ps I am running a marantz av8805 and two yamaha mx-a5200 aventage
Great video. I really appreciate it! Quick question… I am setting up an older pioneer elite monitor with hdmi however not arc. I have a pioneer elite vsx-90 Reciever and pioneer elite blue ray player. I just purchased a sound bar with arc (Polk) Where would I connect the hdmi cable from the sound bar to my receiver? Could I connect it to the arc hdmi since I won’t be using that for the monitor?
Do I still need to provide Ethernet cables for my TV my PlayStation and my Apple tv? Or once I put the ethernet cable into my receiver will the HDMI inputs take it from there?
Hello, i have a question that i need help with. i have a sony vlp vw100 and i don’t know how to set up the audio for it and ive looked everywhere but i can’t find an answer for it so i would really appreciate the help. Thank you!
The only way I know to do that is you would run your PS5 directly to the TV, then use ARC / EARC to get that sound back to your AVR when you want to utilize your full sound system.
How do I connect 2 av amplifier together using 1 as a power amp. I am planning to use 3 channels. 2 main and 1 centre. Then on the other amp what output do I choose. Will the centre still work if I choose the 2 main input
I have a Pioneer Kuro TV, a Samsung DVD player and a new Denon AVR. If I connect the DVD player to the AVR via HDMI then the AVR to the TV via HDMI then the TV audio to the AVR via optical cable, do I then have to connect the TV directly to the DVD player? Or has that already been accomplished by the DVD to the AVR to the TV? I am asking because the DVD player only has one HDMI output.
Excellent video Youthman (as usual)! Your basis here is a dedicated power amplifier, but how can I add an additional AVR (12 year old 140 W Pioneer Elite for example), to provide the additional power? I also have a Denon X4800H as my primary AVR, driving LCR, 2 rear, 4 height speakers , and a powered sub (all Klipsch).
Thanks Youthman! The concept sounds straightforward on the surface, but surprisingly isn’t very well addressed online. As always, the “the devil is in the details”…. 😉
Great video. Very simple and direct. I just purchased an Onkyo TX-NR696 AV Receiver which replaced my 18 yr old Onkyo that did not have HDMI outputs/inputs. My old Onkyo unit connected to my projector with component cables. Ive connected speaker cables to my new unit and ran HDMI cable to my projector. When I select HDMI on my projector, it says no “HDMI signal”. To set up my new Onkyo system I need to see TV screen but either the HDMI signal isn’t being sent from receiver or it’s not being detected by the projector. I know you did not demo Onkyo, but any suggestions? Onkyo printed material isn’t as helpful as i’d like. The only instructions it gives for initial set up is to connect to TV and then follow the prompts on the TV. I don’t use a TV, just projector….which isn’t projecting. I’m wondering if my new unit isn’t compatible with just a projector?? I’ll try calling their support line. Thanks again for the great video.
I need some assistance. I have cable box and a Roku, should both connect through the receiver first. But, when we want to just watch news or a TV show without going through all of our speakers how would we make this connection? We’d just like to use the TV’s speakers for news programs and regular TV shows. And is it possible to set up the receiver so that when we turn on the Roku box it “triggers” the receiver to come on automatically? Our receiver is a Marantz SR5010. Thx
I know I probably won't get an answer, but I have rear in ceiling speakers for dobly atmos so what settings on my receiver do I set to activate those speakers? Atmos enable or height speakers?
Hi James, which AVR do you have? Typically Atmos enabled is referring to up firing speakers that you place on top of your front left and front right speakers to bounce the sound off your ceiling and back down to your listening position. If you have a Denon or Marantz, under Speakers > Manual Setup > Speaker Layout, change Height Speakers to Yes and then choose Top Front etc. The diagram will show you a visual representation of where those speakers would be placed in the room. Let me know if that helps.
@@Youthman I got the new Pioneer VSX-535 5.2. My rear surround sound is set to height for my rear in-ceiling speakers and my front in-ceiling speakers are on the front height channel set to height. I believe that's a 3.2.2 setup. Now I know I don't have any rear surround sound ear level speakers, but the virtualization on the unit does a good job at imitating them. I just want to make sure that my in-ceiling speakers are getting the Atmos channels.
When you check your levels in your AVR you will hear what channels it’s utilizing. You can also download this callout file - www.stereonet.com/forums/topic/470220-dolby-atmos-sound-check-dtsx-111-callout-clips/
Definitely helpful video! Please explain me how the audio from the TV will return to the HDMI eArc port. How or what option on the AVR do I have to choose to listed to the audio coming from the TV? Thanks!
The HDMI Arc/eArc out goes into the Arc/eArc HDMI in Port on the TV? Isn't that just audio when plugged into audio devices (soundbar) or does it carry the visual as well in the case of the AVR (including from legacy devices which tbh looks eminently useful)
I noticed there is a USB port, what is that for? If I have a NAS stored my movie files, can I connect my NAS to AVR through that USB port and output to my projector?. Thx
Their website doesn’t say specifically. They have the USB logo and then further down under the specs > it says USB in for USB drive. It also could be uses as a USB service port.
Hello I have speakers from the "Elite" DVD player. The player is broken, but I have speakers that I want to use. It is impossible to find the same used DVD player and I don't know how to use the speakers. Is it profitable to buy an amplifier and connect the speakers that way? The speakers are not of any quality, but they are 170w and have excellent bass. I don't know if it is more worthwhile to buy some used 5.1 systems or to personalize these somehow?
Great explanation of connections.. New to all this type of technology but only difference from this to my old stereo hi-if (surround sound) is the hdmi inputs. Plus if it’s made to do a job, I don’t understand internet connection to update system. What would be updated ? And if you wanted all audio output channels to give maximum output, wouldn’t we have to connect an extra device - an AMP ? Great idea though and fantastic full on explanation of connections
Thanks Deejay. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. There are several reasons for an internet connection. Many AVR’s and processors have built-in software for Spotify. Etc that utilizes your home network. Occasionally, a brand may provide a firmware update that provides more stable software or correction error in the programming.
Say if you had a media switcher that could connect to RGB strips behind your TV which allows them to mimic colors on your TV. Would it be possible to connect the media switcher to the AVR to still receive the full capacity of HDMI 2.1 from the media source to AVR to the switcher to the TV? Or is it like a certain path you need to use in order to get that full capacity
I have never used one personally but something like this product might be what you’re referring to www.lytmi.co/products/lytmi-fantasy-3-tv-backlight-kit?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2PSvBhDjARIsAKc2cgOd4MFZOIzJ5JD5_NbalLxms6YfFOHFeoFvUUmgjnsIdbr_07iaEHMaAvkXEALw_wcB

First of all thank you for the very helpful video especially for beginners. But there is one thing I don’t understand. Most of the AV receivers have reasonable power output only for 2-3 channels. What’s the reason? If I buy over 1000$ receiver I expect to have enough amplification. But in fact even for 5.1 if I am using mid range speakers, I have to set up two receivers just for amplification purposes. This seems strange. I have no place and budget for second amplifier. Now I am thinking just to continue using my sony ht-ct390 soundbar which sounds just great for its value instead of investing 2000$ for two receivers and speakers. I am not even sure if I will get noticeable difference. Another question I have is related to audio/video lag. I don’t find this information in specs, but it is very important for comfortable gaming. Are there any benchmarks for the input lag performed with single and double receivers?
1 dumb questions, i just buy rx-a870 which use pre out sub, my old amp china one 2.1ch input 3.5mm jack and use passive sub, i dont have money to buy another sub so any idea how to connect rca-3.5mm directly to make do untill afford to better preamp and active sub. Thx
If I use a receiver I upgraded from as an external amplifier will the quality of sound come from the old receiver (2014 onkyo) or the current receiver (marantz 7015) I’m just gonna amplify the Left and right channels. Thank you youthman
Thank You so much. You always learn something! I would like to know how to connect 2 floorstanding speakers in addition to the surround system, but only for listening to music (stereo). Where do you connect them? Because, the loudspeaker connections are already used for the cinema experience :-(
Some older 2ch receivers allowed you to connect two pair of speakers (A and B) and you could toggle one or both pair on and off. You won’t be able to do that with an AVR. If you want that, I would replace your surround speakers with towers.
That video was great! Very impressed how you demonstated everything in a way that even this A/V rookie was able to understand! Thank you!
Thank you kindly.

Good clear how to for someone that may not know how great job
Thank you Dane. I know there’s a lot of new guys getting into the hobby. Sometimes it’s easy for us to forget that not everyone knows the basics.
Thank you so much. Just starting here.
D video really help and put throw, and I thank God my system works perfectly without contacting technician.
Very good instructions.
Excellent presentation, well put together & explained. Sadly let down by incessant ads.
Sorry. That’s up to UA-cam on the ads.
ahh there we go, that explains it. i just bought a pioneer vsx 815 at thrift for $20, using it for my PC speakers (sony bookshelf speakers), wasn't sure if I was supposed to do the bare wire twisty connectors or the pre-out (i'm so used to RCA cables, so i tried the pre-out). no sound.. then i went to the twisty, sound works, but was confused as to what the preout even was. thanks!
Where do you plug the single pre out rca wire what 5 input on the second av receiver ?? HELP I’m trying to use two receiver
PS5 into one of the HDMI inputs on your AVR. Then from the HDMI Out on your AVR to the projector.
@@Youthman so you absolutely need a HDMI connection in the receiver can use a older one...
@@Youthman thank you i understand this so I can still use the wires on the back of my receiver along with using a HDMI, so a HDMI is absolutely needed on the receiver... sorry I ave asburgers and trying to understand this I am very excited to bring out te mythos 4 again....there great speakers... tank you so much!!! do you have a video link for projector so I need at least 2 HDMIs on the AVR correct??
@@Youthman i want to share with you that my projector as no sound just video so the ps5 goes into the receiver ,the HDMI projects the picture to the projector I thought the ps5 does that I connected the HDMI to the projector from the ps5 and I got the screen up however I don't know how to add the sound... sorry if I am sounding confused... i really appreciate your help and quick responses I subbed...
This video showed me everything I needed! Thank you very much. Banana plugs! Woohoo!
I’m glad you found the video helpful
Excellent video. Very helpful. Many thanks for making and sharing it.
I’m glad you enjoyed it
Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for
How are you connected the individual pre outs to the extenal amp ? Surely you can only use one rca output at a time on the external amp?
Sooo if i wanna counnect soundbar to tv and a receiver (speakers) also to tv, how would i do it?, just for i can have a choice to either listen to soundbar or to receiver speakers or to both
Thx Youthman! Love your content. I havent seen Component cables in a min lol. This video is very much needed in our community thank you!
Right? I’m a bit surprised brands continue to add them to AVR’s but I guess people still have older gear they want to connect.
Thank you so much!! This was so helpful
Happy to hear it
I’m trying to use 2 AV receivers with hdmi arc is that possible??
Where would I connect a bass shaker on this receiver.... ?
You would use the subwoofer out from the AVR into an amplifier then to your bass shakers.
@@Youthman would that replace the existing sub woofer or would it be possible to use both
You can split the signal using a Y adapter.
Blessings 🙌🏿

Hi, is it possible to connect two av receiver together for better sound? Meaning the surround speakers to the second receiver for better sound? It is cheaper on market place to buy a used av receiver, not seeing many amplifier for sale.
More Youthman awesomeness! Thx Mr. Stevens! You're a real pro.
Appreciate it.
I currently have my Amazon 4k firestick plugged into my tv. Should I plug it into my sony str-dh590 avr receiver or leave it in the 4k tv?
@@Youthman thanks for the reply ❤️
Unfortunately, I did that already but it’s not working. I’ve been using this exact setup with ARC for a long time so I know everything but that is working fine. 😢
The TV is behaving as if it sees the ARC AVR and is sending the audio there. But I hear nothing. The AVR has HDMI control And TV audio switching turned on.
Ty for the information!
Question here ! I want to hookup my oldddddd receiver with surround sound to a newer projector, receiver doesn't have HDMI ports; there must be stereo cable to HDMI adapters that will work right??
I really appreciated seeing this. I'm now wondering if it is worh keeping my old Technics SA-GX190. It doesn't have any HDMI ports.
I was given a Harman Kardon AVR 310. It has no HDMI port how do I get it set up so my tv will play through the speakers I’ve got hooked up to it?
You will either need to use Digital Coax or Toslink (fiber optic) connection to get sound from your TV to your AVR
what's the best way to connect PC to amplifier to have best quality when playing FLACs?
Thanks
Ps I am running a marantz av8805 and two yamaha mx-a5200 aventage
Great video. I really appreciate it! Quick question… I am setting up an older pioneer elite monitor with hdmi however not arc. I have a pioneer elite vsx-90 Reciever and pioneer elite blue ray player. I just purchased a sound bar with arc (Polk)
Where would I connect the hdmi cable from the sound bar to my receiver? Could I connect it to the arc hdmi since I won’t be using that for the monitor?
Very informative. Thanks!! Definitely subscribing to your page.
Do I still need to provide Ethernet cables for my TV my PlayStation and my Apple tv? Or once I put the ethernet cable into my receiver will the HDMI inputs take it from there?
Ethernet is used for firmware updates, downloads etc.
Can we use Earc and connect everything to the tv?
Thanks for that, great explaination.
Hello, i have a question that i need help with. i have a sony vlp vw100 and i don’t know how to set up the audio for it and ive looked everywhere but i can’t find an answer for it so i would really appreciate the help.
Thank you!
Question, if at some point i want the sound of my PS5 connected to the AVR to just sound on my TV rather than the speakers, is that possible?
I have heard of guys using an older AVR as the “amplifier” but IMO, it’s not advisable because you now have two volumes you will have to balance.
Thanks Youthman! The concept sounds straightforward on the surface, but surprisingly isn’t very well addressed online. As always, the “the devil is in the details”…. 😉
Yeah, not everything that can be done, should be done. 😀

Definitely helpful video! Please explain me how the audio from the TV will return to the HDMI eArc port. How or what option on the AVR do I have to choose to listed to the audio coming from the TV? Thanks!
This should explain it - ua-cam.com/video/_CFNbzHYNJc/v-deo.htmlsi=yLC0I-5IO_LQMGME
Thank you sooooooo much!
Very impressive video and a good set of knowledge for beginners like me. Thankyou so much for your video.
I’m really glad you found the video helpful
The HDMI Arc/eArc out goes into the Arc/eArc HDMI in Port on the TV? Isn't that just audio when plugged into audio devices (soundbar) or does it carry the visual as well in the case of the AVR (including from legacy devices which tbh looks eminently useful)
Very Informative
Thank you
I have a 6.1 receiver that I hope to use. If it's a 7.1 signal will it decode in 6.1?
What about to connect 2.1 active speakers to this AVR?
I noticed there is a USB port, what is that for? If I have a NAS stored my movie files, can I connect my NAS to AVR through that USB port and output to my projector?. Thx
Their website doesn’t say specifically. They have the USB logo and then further down under the specs > it says USB in for USB drive.
It also could be uses as a USB service port.
Hello
I have speakers from the "Elite" DVD player.
@@Youthman I was actually looking at that one, I just want to make sure when I connect everything, it works perfectly
I would reach out to their support. Unfortunately I’m just not familiar with them
All You Need To Remember Is With Speaker 🔊 Jacks Is When You Wire Some Cables Have A Line Down One Side Undercoating Which Is Which The One With The Dark Stripe Goes To Black Terminal The Other Goes On The Red Terminal Be Sure To Do The Same When You Do The Opitset End In Other Words Red On Red Black On On Ether End This Is Something He Is Not Telling you I have Worked With Cables Like This For Over 42 Years ❤
you have some good videos but i was curious how do i connect my old graphic equalizer to these newer av receivers?
These have built in equalizers, Don't try connecting a separate equalizer or you could run into a whole host of problems
Hi I have an lg 5.1 system can I have this reciever linked to the lg speakers?
Hi there , how would you connect an eq.?
1 dumb questions, i just buy rx-a870 which use pre out sub, my old amp china one 2.1ch input 3.5mm jack and use passive sub, i dont have money to buy another sub so any idea how to connect rca-3.5mm directly to make do untill afford to better preamp and active sub. Thx
very thorough thank u!
This is much needed. It would be nice to see the hook up of a processor.
I have a video on that - ua-cam.com/video/evYMGQyTY90/v-deo.html
@@Youthman Cool, you have it all covered.
I try. Much more to come
If I use a receiver I upgraded from as an external amplifier will the quality of sound come from the old receiver (2014 onkyo) or the current receiver (marantz 7015) I’m just gonna amplify the Left and right channels. Thank you youthman
👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent video
Very well explained
I’m glad you enjoyed the video
Thank You so much. You always learn something!
I would like to know how to connect 2 floorstanding speakers in addition to the surround system, but only for listening to music (stereo). Where do you connect them? Because, the loudspeaker connections are already used for the cinema experience :-(
Some older 2ch receivers allowed you to connect two pair of speakers (A and B) and you could toggle one or both pair on and off. You won’t be able to do that with an AVR. If you want that, I would replace your surround speakers with towers.
@@Youthman Thanks. I have the AVC X4800H 🙈
Quick question do I get better sound and picture quality if I plug my sources directly into the t v and then ark it out or vice versa
No improvement by doing that. Sometimes people will do that because their AVR does not support HDMI 2.1.
Ty bro appreciate the quick response
Glad I could help.
Thank you sir I really appreciate it
