I just love how the pizza episode encapsulates life as a food service worker, the guy who tries really hard to do a good job ends up getting screamed at for something out of their control. And I just enjoyed how Squidward sees this situation and shoves the pizza in the guy's face, even Squidward likes bullying and teasing Spongebob normally but Squidward saw how hard Spongebob worked to get the pizza delivered to the guy and couldn't stand seeing Spongebob get broken down like that. I mean yeah if I was the customer I'd be mad too if my drink wasn't delivered but I wouldn't mind as long as I wasn't charged for it.
I 100% agree with this. Pizza Delivery might just be my all time favorite episode. As someone who used to work in food service I can definitely relate lol.

Yep. Their relationship has always struck me as being more than friends, and whether its mutual or not, spongebob definitely felt something more for sandy
I have also seen a theory about karate choppers which implies this. Overall I think maybe writers had in mind to work something but in the end they left it, and imo it's better how it is. They really don't need to have couples at every show
Season 1 is the least mean spirited by far. I love me some dark humor in spongebob but the characters feel so much more real. Squidward dislikes spongebob but doesn't want him to die or anything, and whenever squidward suffers, he kind of deserves it. Mr krabs, while an exaggerated stereotype, he seems to genuinely care about his restaurant and spongebob. Patrick was a supportive friend, but has a short temper. He's not a brainless asshole. Mrs Puff didn't hate spongebob, she simply got anxious at the sight of him. For such a surreal cartoon, they really knocked it out of the park with the characters
seasons 1-4 of SpongeBob will forever hold a special place in my heart. Hell, I even did my senior quote in high school as "the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma"
Season 4 is _very_ divisive. I'd say about nearly half of it has decent episodes, with 17 I would still watch. Not great but not worth writing off imo either, especially when a few are some of the funniest episodes of the show.
38:15 the next scene after shows Patrick saying to SpongeBob “I don’t think squidward likes us”. This is a really important detail lost in the later seasons because it shows that Patrick understands squidwards tone of voice and can tell that squidward doesn’t want to join in, really wish they made Patrick semi smarter like this
Or when Sponge is roasting Squid towards Sandy. SpongeBob usually doesn’t take any offense from Squid, but he then acknowledges Squidward’s grouchy/boring personality. Lol
@@jaxxon2475 reminder that in Tea at the Treedome, SpongeBob ran RIGHT to Patrick to ask him what air is. Always felt like a weird moment. It makes part of me believe Patrick was supposed to be the wiser of the too, but then not too many episodes later, he says “haha it’s a giraffe”
I was 11 years old when they started advertising this show and I distinctly remember thinking “That show looks stupid”. It was my favorite show after one episode. Still is, 23 years later.
The art style of the title cards and throughout the series is Tiki, basically a 1950s era take on what was called "Polynesian" aesthetic even if it had little to do with the actual people groups. You also see it from the music in the series which has a lot of slide guitar and other instruments associated with that aesthetic.

SpongeBob background music is something I will always cherish in my heart. Something so simple yet so magical about that music. Thank you so much for this video. ALSO, the “My Leg!” Gag has to be one of the best ongoing TV gags in history.
I wonder how many kids genuinely believed it was a giraffe for a good chunk of time because of patrick only to be confused to learn what an elephant or actual giraffe is later on
I love the aesthetic of season 1. Season 2 is when the show looks most "definitive" to me when it comes to the spongebob franchise, but I'll always love the weirder look of season 1 too, with the darker colors and more exaggerated features.
The art style of season 1 and actually season 4 are my favorites, specifically season 4 with the episode with the killer Krabby patty was pretty good imo
I haven’t seen S1E1 in SOOO long.. I forgot how great this show started out. It’s pretty rare for the very first episode of a show to be one of the best ones.
It’s a good episode, but way too basic to be the best. We only see a handful of the main characters, and the plot is relatively simple and not as memorable as some of the other season 1-3 episodes. Also, with it being the pilot, the art style just feels a bit off in comparison to later episodes. For one, Krabby Patties look way less appetizing than they do in later episodes. That’s fine, though. Your pilot shouldn’t be your best episode.
i just realized: you know how spongebob and patrick are both really good at blowing bubbles? in bubblestand, ONLY spongebob knows how to blow a good bubble at first. but in later episodes, patrick can also blow bubbles just as good. this implies that those lessons he gave patrick actually worked! edit: i like how despite being the "antagonist" in Ripped Pants, larry never actually did anyting really mean or rude to spongebob at all.
For Larry, I think it depends on how you look at it. I fully believe season 1 Spongebob had a crush on Sandy, and it's likely Larry knows Spongebob isn't all that tough so one could argue Larry was tryna show off to make Spongebob feel bad.
@@NateS917 Yea. Bodybuilders are like that, not in the egotistical way, just that if you work that hard at something, you tend to want to show it off a bit, and there's nothing actually wrong with that. Hard work, even for something "vain" like body building deserves recognition.
Watching Spongebob when you actually understand the episode is like watching it for the first time again, regardless of how much you watched it when you were younger
I think it should be pointed out that Hillenberg was fantastic at psychedelic-ish artwork. His early animation work is a great example of this. Not to mention, his paintings are absolutely phenomenal. People definitely need to check his work out. R.I.P.
Just a bit of the lore you know info from an animator here. "Computer animated" SpongeBob in later seasons is still very much hand animated. The clean up and coloring moved to digital, but that's not necessarily why it starts looking "too clean" and or stiff. You see, animation is expensive so a common practice by studios is to outsource the animation and coloring to studios in countries that pay their employees less. that means you have a lot of different hands in the process that you would normally, as a result animation has become much more "on model" to avoid revisions in character model and color aswell as editing compositing. The process to keep clean up as on model as possible has moved to even just the storyboard stages (making storyboarders having to take an immense amount of work too) it's part of why "new deal for animation" became a thing lately. This sudden changes of amount of work expected from parts of the animation pipeline that were never supposed to be there, were made with little to no extra compensation to it's artists despite the amount of extra work required in extremely crunch inducing conditions. But i digress. You see, people charge for corrections, so having things off model even for a visual gag in one shot might need extra work put into it later on which means compensating the revisionist. Animation now a days even hand drawn one (anything that isn't puppet or 3d animation), is kept as much on model as posible for these reasons mostly. The design is streamlined to it's very basics so it's easier to replicate almost identically by any animator every time.
To this day I still remember when this show first premiered. It was in May of 1999, right after the Kids' Choce Awards. I was 7 going on 8. I remember Sandy's introduction being used a LOT in the promos. Aw, good times. :)
The style of background art in the show's title cards that you were referring to is considered vintage Polynesian Tiki. Also some Hawaiian influence among other styles throughout the show. Great job on this, by the way! I agree 100% that the old art style was more esthetically pleasing.
I always loved how in the earlier seasons squidward was always characterized as a beset upon grumpy dude who actually has somewhat of a heart. Not a consistently beset upon man who just gets beat up for a joke lol
I love how alot of these episodes felt like they were teaching a lesson or creating a character development. They felt good and satisfying to watch. Ripped pants has a very good message in it and a wonderful song at the end. Suds is a good episode as well talking about how at first doctors can be fearful but you learn that their a good thing and its okie to be afraid of them. (Fun fact the way spongebob suds is cured are actual ways to clean a sponge). Pickles is one of my fav ep literally a character growth episode for spongebob and that music when he confronts bubble bass.
I remember seeing this as a very young girl, and it’s shaped my entire humor today and me as a person in some ways. It broke my heart to know the creator passed so young, but he left behind an amazing legacy💗
From what I could remember, I heard the voice audio equipment for Reef Blower was apparently either accidentally wiped out or accidentally destroyed & it meant making the entire episode with no dialogue. Kind of interesting to think about really.
The real reason is that Reef Blower was made as an extention to Help Wanted to meet the 11 minute mark since the pilot was around 7 minutes (the production name was lierally Pilot Exention). However this would have required another payment to the VAs despite it being shorter, so they made it without dialogue instead.
As a 2000s kid, I had most of the first two seasons on DVDs that I would rewatch religiously. Of course the first five seasons are all really nostalgic to me, but the first two hold a special place in my heart! Especially season 1 with the old cel animation and the witty humor
The garage appeared in the silent episode and the one where they blew bubbles in the back yard. Also We see fred for the first time in the same episode with the first “MY LEG” where SpongeBob helps him cross the street while he uses a cane for his injured leg. Gotta love the subtle continuity
The smiles in season one are so wholesome and everything was so much more original. You could tell they knew what they were doing. If anyone was gonna start a cartoon do it like this lol very authentic. And good job making this video you did very well.
Honestly one of the best UA-cam videos I have ever seen in my life. The commentary is absolutely amazing, the style, nostalgia, just everything. I cannot wait to see another video soon.
I feel like Season 1 was the kindest with it's writing and showed that you don't have to be only mean spirited, dark, morbid to write good jokes and morals for the kids and adults which is something other seasons and modern shows kind of lack a kind of hope, kindness, challenging people to believe in existence of someone who absurdly loves to live and genuinely enjoys little things in life like: having minimum wage job, hobbies, friends, doing childish stuff with your friends when you're adult
The vibe of this season was something else. Even small things like when spongeBob was moody after the boating fail, he had one pillow in his head , so realistic, I just love that everyone had emotions. Something so simple yet so complicated to capture today on a show
5:20 The animation still is hand drawn. They just draw it on paper and scan it into the computer to color it. They started doing this in season 2. Season 1 is the only season to use cel animation. In cel animation you draw it on paper then they xeox the drawing onto clear plastic sheets, then take pictures of the scenes one at a time in front of a background.
For me it was up to the fourth season, SpongeBob's show holds such sweet memories to me, my sons grew up with the show and I used to watch it with them but yeah we kinda stopped watching after the fourth season.
Season 4 is definitely good. You automatically feel like it's different from the previous seasons with the episode plots and artwork but it is still an overall good time and it's specials were fun
@@Spongebrain97 Yep, when people started leaving like C. H. Greenblatt, Ennio Torresani, especially Hillenburg, the show kinda lost the creativity it had in the beginning.

I grew up with spongebob seeing as I was born in 97, and I can remember enjoying the show thoroughly until a bit after the 100th episode stretch, but I remember falling off the new episodes a bit after, still loving the older episodes. My favorite episode is and always has been Suds.
When I was in college I had no cable in my apartment and the only entertainment I owned was a box set with the first 3 seasons of SpongeBob, I loved watching them
My grandmother used to listen to Tiny Tim's records...I remember loving this as soon as it came out when I was 12-13...😍 they really hyped it up back then too...I wish that later seasons were the same as the first! 😭
I was born a little under 2 weeks after the show first aired, so I guess you could say I quite literally grew up with it. I don't remember the first time I saw the show, clearly, but the first season has always been the most memorable for me, even though I was too young to remember when it was new. Rock Bottom absolutely traumatized me as a kid, lol. Pretty sure I had nightmares about being stuck down there. Also, happy 23rd birthday to SpongeBob! Right behind ya, buddy.
I think my dad ended up loving SpongeBob more than us kids. He would always sing SpongeBob's song from Naughty Nautical Neighbors and replace Squidward's name with one of ours lol
i find myself able to quote parts from every single one of these episodes beat for beat. nothing beats S1 Spongebob, truly iconic! Can't wait for pt 2 :)

I agree with you, the first season of SpongeBob is a masterpiece. Seasons 1-3 are definitely the golden age, but season 1 had a look and feel that is so inviting and whimsical
I was a high-school graduate when this show started. I remember my friend and I talking about how Nickelodeon was reaching the bottom of the barrel when it comes to show ideas and how it wouldn't last long. lol We were both wrong. My younger cousin, who did watch it at the time (she's 26 now) did. I used to watch it with her when babysitting. I did like season 1 of the show. I like how Spongebob came across as an adult trying live out on his own, but still had an innocent nature to him. I've never seen much of the series as a whole, but I have come across later eps and he just comes across as a man-child or something.
My son is about to graduate 5th grade. He has this attitude you described, I feel it does happen for the influence of something like, SpongeBob. Thank you for this video. I shared it with him today.
Hot take pizza delivery and band geeks are the two best episodes because the episodes that can humanize squidward and make him end on a high is an impressive feat and just works so well. Id much rather have seen development towards squidward actually getting some of his own wins. Its much better when they get to have variety instead of every character being 1 trait only.

Yo! I laughed so hard whenever I've seen the anchovies while spongebob came with the spatula Krabs mentioned. That song played in my mind too. I literally feel the nostalgia hitting strong and I love this. The reef blower is rather funny to me. You're making me so happy because this brings back good memories. Thank you so much for showing this! PS: Never mess with Sandy. One gentle chop and the boulder/massive rock got destroyed.
My sister and I loved SpongeBob. We would sing along with the theme song every time it came on, and constantly quoted seasons 1-4, as well as the movie. Our parents thought we were weird and didn't understand our love for SpongeBob, but knew we liked it so we were allowed to watch it. Mom just liked to hear us laugh, even if it was over cartoons. After the movie, the show declined, and we both lost interest. But it was a big part of our lives for a long time. Mom was a fishkeeper for a long time, and usually had a snail in each fishtail. Every one of those snails was named "Gary."
Thank you for bringing the nostalgia back. Also thank you for your service as an EMR. I’m a full time Advanced EMT and I know that these shifts aren’t easy. Keep up the great work! 🎉🎉❤

I was actually on vacation on my grandparents boat and I kept telling everyone that I needed to be in front of a TV for this premiere. @@Cousinbiddy1 i completely agree that 1-3 were truly the greatest, but season 4 is still pretty iconic
@@samanthabrooke2467 season 4 had some good episodes especially in the beginning but majority of them had terrible episodes

This is a really important detail lost in the later seasons because it shows that Patrick understands squidwards tone of voice and can tell that squidward doesn’t want to join in, really wish they made Patrick semi smarter like this
I've always believed Patrick is smarter than the show and viewers believe but just doesn't GAF because he has fun either way
Or when Sponge is roasting Squid towards Sandy.
So much of the shows style is inspired by or designed to emulate Poly art and culture. Or at least an American ideal of it

I've never lost my love for SpongeBob all these years later. It's crazy how something I watched when I was little still has such an impact on my life
With the circus music in the background 🤣🤣
I wonder how many kids genuinely believed it was a giraffe for a good chunk of time because of patrick only to be confused to learn what an elephant or actual giraffe is later on
I love the aesthetic of season 1. Season 2 is when the show looks most "definitive" to me when it comes to the spongebob franchise, but I'll always love the weirder look of season 1 too, with the darker colors and more exaggerated features.
O
It’s mostly more streamlined past the first season one, but I like the uniqueness of the first most
The art style of season 1 and actually season 4 are my favorites, specifically season 4 with the episode with the killer Krabby patty was pretty good imo
I haven’t seen S1E1 in SOOO long.. I forgot how great this show started out. It’s pretty rare for the very first episode of a show to be one of the best ones.
It isn't in my opinion. It's a good episode but not one of the best.
@@pepearown4968they mean because it was such a solid beginning 😊
@@pepearown4968*sigh* you’re literally forgetting it’s a pilot🤣 stop complicating it!
i just realized: you know how spongebob and patrick are both really good at blowing bubbles? in bubblestand, ONLY spongebob knows how to blow a good bubble at first. but in later episodes, patrick can also blow bubbles just as good. this implies that those lessons he gave patrick actually worked!
edit: i like how despite being the "antagonist" in Ripped Pants, larry never actually did anyting really mean or rude to spongebob at all.
For Larry, I think it depends on how you look at it. I fully believe season 1 Spongebob had a crush on Sandy, and it's likely Larry knows Spongebob isn't all that tough so one could argue Larry was tryna show off to make Spongebob feel bad.
Consistency!
@@SirMaski nah, that's just Larry. He likes to work out and show off muscles, but he's never malicious or callous about it. Hes just a humble gym bro
@@NateS917also Antagonist means someone in opposition of the protagonist. They don’t need to be a bully or mean to be an antagonist
That’s so interesting! I didn’t know that. Thanks for explaining that, Cofee Joe! :)
To this day I still remember when this show first premiered. It was in May of 1999, right after the Kids' Choce Awards. I was 7 going on 8. I remember Sandy's introduction being used a LOT in the promos. Aw, good times. :)
Squidward screaming into the bubble wand is still hilarious to this day
We need a part 2 for sure!!!
You got it! Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment, India! I really appreciate it.
Sadly Nickelodeon spat on his legacy with spin offs and an advertisement disguised as a film 😭
So glad I found your channel on Saturday morning.. this watchathon is gonna be great 🎉
I feel like Season 1 was the kindest with it's writing and showed that you don't have to be only mean spirited, dark, morbid to write good jokes and morals for the kids and adults which is something other seasons and modern shows kind of lack a kind of hope, kindness, challenging people to believe in existence of someone who absurdly loves to live and genuinely enjoys little things in life like: having minimum wage job, hobbies, friends, doing childish stuff with your friends when you're adult
In cel animation you draw it on paper then they xeox the drawing onto clear plastic sheets, then take pictures of the scenes one at a time in front of a background.
during my childhood spongebob was a go to. i still watch 1-4 of the seasons for nostalgia
Screw season 4 , more like season 1-3
For me it was up to the fourth season, SpongeBob's show holds such sweet memories to me, my sons grew up with the show and I used to watch it with them but yeah we kinda stopped watching after the fourth season.
Season 4 is definitely good. You automatically feel like it's different from the previous seasons with the episode plots and artwork but it is still an overall good time and it's specials were fun

Honestly idk why but the Lifeguard's run when he goes to make sure Spongebob is OK always sends me lmao
Right behind ya, buddy.
i loved when patrick wasn't portrayed as straight-up dumb. like, in episode 2, he's more of a mentor that doesn't know any more than spongebob does.
I could wax poetic all day about how much I adore season 1. Great video, can't wait for part 2 my friend. :)
I’m almost 30 and to this day I still enjoy watching SpongeBob (the earlier seasons of course) but the 1st season was definitely the best I remember it vividly 😁
The first season is my fave and I always remember scenes and dialogues from the episodes to this day, I'm 31 and spongebob will always be an important part of my childhood :´)
I was 7 when SpongeBob premiered. I still remember the first commercial for this show. It's easily one of my top 10 favorite Nicktoons. People of all ages love SpongeBob. One of my cousins who was born in 81 loves show. Definitely would love to see a part 2 to this.
29:50 That shot right there is why we love early SpongeBob. Look at how simple and silly , and the color palette so calming. SpongeBob hits.
What I loved truly about season 1 was the background music used for certain scenes, ahhh the nostalgia hits so hard in the feels.
I'm honestly surprised that I never heard even just a single instance of a child in real life attempting to catch a jellyfish with a net.
“Oh SpongeBob! WHYYYYY???” from Mrs. Puff never fails to leave me absolutely rolling
I would have to agree with you Shawn about spreading positivity. SpongeBob has always been a great great show with an amazing message
I would really love a part 2. I’ve fallen asleep to this video about three times now! So comforting lol

The fact that this show has at least one memable moment from each moment from each episode, even before memes were a thing is amazing.
The love and care in this whole video is outstanding. SpongeBob 1-3 to even 4-6 is just a blast and hearing someone else talk about it is great (:
For some reason patrick saying “it’s a giraffe” and then laughing for nine years is my favorite SpongeBob gag to imitate lol
I was OBSESSED with the WALL-E dvd I got from blockbuster when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. I watched it so much that my parents had to take the disc away from me which made me cry my eyes out lol.

Thank you so much for showing this! PS: Never mess with Sandy. One gentle chop and the boulder/massive rock got destroyed.
Aw HELL YEAH! Time to sit back, relax, and unfold this beauty
For me, the second second season. Almost every episode has a quote that's recognized by almost everyone now 😂
My sister and I loved SpongeBob.
Most people probably don’t know that the French narration is also Tom Kenny, whom voices SpongeBob. He also does those deep super hero voices.

You make some great points for season 1. It is the most nostalgic and feel good season for me as well, altough the comedy has not quite reached its peak yet in my opinion. I was 9 when SpongeBob premiered. I remember all the hype leading up to the premiere. I was actually on vacation on my grandparents boat and I kept telling everyone that I needed to be in front of a TV for this premiere. I thought it was the weirdest thing ever but I was intrigued so I kept watching it as more episodes premiered. My parents appreciated the adult humor and the absurdity of the show that they both walked around quoting certain episodes all my childhood.
