3000 U-turns in 30 days! Was it worth it?

  • Few days ago, @DoodleOnAMotorcycle made a wonderful video about how she practiced U-turns for a month. She shows the whole progress from day 1 to day 30, and that's pretty awesome, I really like it! It inspired me to make a video of my own to show you a few tricks on how we can achieve the same progress with less effort. And also, I want to give some context on this whole U-turn thing, because for a person who only started riding a bike it can seem like a very strange obsession. Why U-turn of all things, how it fits to normal day to day riding and why anyone in their right mind wants to repeat it for 3000 times😜

    A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). My advanced training course makes emphasis on slow speed riding techniques at first (such as good clutch and throttle control, proper riding posture, proper use of vision, etc.), then proceeds to more advanced techniques (such as aggressive braking, trail braking, maximal lean angle). The course incorporates a lot of exercises from DOSAF slow speed riding (similar to police rodeo like motorcycle training in USA), braking and cornering exercises and motogymkhana style riding. And now, since I actively learn English - I decided to post some useful videos for both your and mine practice!😉

    After watching part of Doodle's video, I thought I would try that challenge. I immediately noticed how bad I was the first day. I also noticed how tiring it can become until I realized that there are 4 U turns in every figure 8. So 100 U turns is actually only 25 figure 8s; that is a real game changer in the challenge. By the third day, I was completing several of my figure 8 at full lock. I have always had good clutch control, but with figure 8 riding, it is more about the timing of the clutch engagement. I found that you get into a rhythm of clutch in, feather a little power, clutch in, feather the power (all at idle 3 to 5 mph) and suddenly the U turns become much easier going through the figure 8. There is a park nearby that I just use the 1/4 entry road and do a series of figure 8 down the road keeping the diameter under 20 feet max though many are being done at or near full lock now.

    Thanks a lot for tightening up the actual skill and technique in a concise video, Andrey.
    The other video from Doodle was - although heartwarming - simply a messy vanity story with fractions of somewhat useful information all over the place.
    In combination, both videos work well though!
    Edit: In hindsight she would not have needed 3000 iterations in 30 days if she spent a little time on mindful preparation (physics, technique, mental tricks) beforehand.
    Anyway, she did it her way and that’s perfectly fine. Still there is some risk that doing it this [her] way you end up adding skills that you do not properly understand „how“ you do it and why it works.

    부러뜨렸습니다.
    원인은, 지나친 시선처리와
    회전하는 방향으로 몸통이

    This is some seriously good stuff. The problem with the other practice u-turn video approach is that one may simply be re-enforcing poor form or bad habbits

      if one completed the turn without crashing, then that technique is the correct technique :D you are overthinking it :D the only wrong technique is the one that make you crash

    Can you do more videos on motogymkhana technique. I used to ride motogymkhana quite a bit a few years back and miss it tremendously. You have a good understanding of the turn technique and its all about turning in that sport. Would love to see more of your tips and tricks on it. Thank you.

    Thanks for another great video on turning! Your countersteering and turning videos changed things dramatically for me. I’m a new rider, but I come with two unusual challenges. First, I’ve ridden a unicycle for almost 25 years. I find that this changed my perception of the movements of a motorcycle and make some things easier for me, but also brings some habits that don’t transfer properly to a motorcycle. The second challenge is that I chose to make my first motorcycle a scooter with a CVT. (A Buddy 125, to be exact.) I spend lots of time watching videos with techniques that I can then go out and practice, but I feel like I’m trying to reinvent the wheel because I can’t find many videos that don’t assume I have a friction zone. Still, I find that I learn more from videos like yours that emphasize proper head turning, and the other intricacies of turns beyond the friction zone. Most scooter-specific videos seem to assume the rider will only watch 30mins total and then never practice. 🤷‍♂️ I feel better off sticking to videos that keep telling me to practice friction zone control but assume I’ll actually practice. 😂

      This is my problem too! There's no serious helpful scooter vids out there. There's ridealongs with guys convincing themselves they live their scooter, there's women loving their scooters and being cute but not helpful. There's a few on moto jitsu but they're very short and he's got zero playlists so you have to hunt them all down and make your own. I was hoping the algorithm was just not blessing me but I guess it's just not out there.

    My biggest problem with training is finding the empty parking lot. I thought our high school would be a good choice but they decided they needed a light pole every other parking space. Doesn't leave a lot of room for error.

      I use a narrow 2 lane entry road to a park. Any side street with little to no traffic can be used. Cones are not necessary, you can visualize them. Cars are generally polite, most smile and wave as they approach because they can tell I am practicing a riding skill.

    In the Netherlands, for the exam, we learn to do the U-turn without using the clutch, only a little throttle and using the rear brake for speed control, accompanied with leaning and counter balancing. The requirement is staying inside 6 meters. Using the clutch is technically allowed but not advised as the drive to the rear wheel must always be there.

      The potential for issue with the throttle/rear brake only approach is that the throttle on many bikes can be very abrupt just off idle making the bike surge. This is difficult to control with the rear brake only. Adding clutch control to the mix permits surging to be more easily managed without the need for too much throttle and brake.

      Hi! What's the bike model you use for the exam? 6m is pretty big diameter, usually it can be done in a number of ways.

      @@MotoControlEn I used an MT-07 for the vehicle control exam and an SV650 for the traffic participation exam. Other (d)riding schools use different motorcycles, typically Japanese 650cc motorcycles for the full A license. There was an MT-03 for the A2 license and a 125cc for the A1 license. The 6m is because Dutch roads where you can do a U-turn are typically 6m wide (3m lanes x2). CBR (Dutch examination organization) also has to keep in mind that you can only learn by taking lessons/practice at a school and that we are still beginners.

      ​@@markkthemk Yes, 6m is a plenty of space for these bikes, so that's the answer to your question😁 If your goal is just to make a 6m U-turn - you can make it in a number of ways, including the method which you described.

      ​@@MotoControlEn can you do an instruction for sports bikes? On my Aprilia Falco the inside of my arms/wrists hit the tank and prevent me from putting in more steering angle. This hinders smooth throttle application in right hand turns a lot.

    greetings, I'm a beginner and I practice every day for 15-20 minutes, I'm wondering if it's a mistake to practice figure eights and U turning without gas and the rear brake because my motorcycle goes 15 km/h when the clutch is fully released. So far I haven't fallen off the motorcycle and a little I use the rear brake, I have done full lock several times without the rear brake, this is my first motorcycle and before I only rode scooters of various CCs...thanks

      It's not a mistake, it just limits your options a lot. Since you already can make full lock circles, try to make one on VERY slow speed, almost at 0 lean, and after that try to make a full-lock circle on higher speed, with steeper lean angle. I think you'll instantly understand the benefit of using throttle, clutch and brake simultaneously🙂

    I'm sure you've come across some students like me, only rev up the engine a little bit as the clutch is released to friction zone. Is there any drawback for this or is this just another personal thing?

      Hi! I'm not sure I understood the question correctly. You mean you keep the throttle slightly opened and keep the clutch in friction zone, right? If yes - that's kind of the core principle of slow riding, I can't see why you have any drawbacks with it

      @@MotoControlEn What I found myself doing is that, when I pull the clutch (disengage), I close the throttle. I only open the throttle a little bit (up to around 2k rev) when I need to release the clutch (engage, friction zone). In your videos, I think you said keep the throttle slightly open all the time.

Yes, I usually recommend to keep the throttle slightly opened all the time for slow speed riding, because this way we have a spare power, which we can put on the rear wheel at any moment with the clutch. But later, when we progress, we become more proactive and can give the throttle only when we need it, that's ok too. So if you already quite good, don't lose balance and don't need to put your feet down - use the throttle as you see fit, it's a matter of personal preference.

      Maybe, everyone learns at different speed. I would say usually it takes about 4-6 hours of actual practice time (not only u-turns, of course, other exercises too)

      That's what I like about the motorcycle "community". Everyone disses everyone, but there's always a friendly greeting on the street. I've ridden everything from low rider Harleys to supersport machines. But from the point of view of this "expert" I am of course also a bad bad driver. Only what kind of bike you're on, the other bikers will immediately pigeonhole you. But you are the same person! Totally batty! Doodle is an enthusiastic and friendly biker. She always gets up even if she falls a thousand times. Motorcycling is her life, she really enjoys it! And that counts. All you fucking idiots out there, you can kiss my ass. That's what the biggest idiot of them all tells you!

    3000 u turn is waste of time. Take that time to focus on more important part of riding experience. U-turns in my opinion, yes it is very important and it is part of our skills and it must be exercised at anytime when on on the bike. It is worth to dedicate a certain time to to practice it. However, when focusing only for u-turn in 30 days for 3000 u-turns, it is like studying overnight to face the exam tomorrow. One: it is not very effective and create so much stress, two: the skill will not stick and blend naturally. It is being forced to become a second nature but in reality it does not work that way. Learning daily5-10 minutes is better than forcing in 30 days, then after that, WHAT??

      He brushed on the video from Doodleonmotorcycle AKA, Caroline. She practiced for 30 days straight with the goal to reach 3000 u turns to make her skill perfect or close to perfect. In fact, she is already good enough, all she needs just to do 5 to 10 minutes every moment when she is riding.
