My father bought a crank start mower in 1968. I was two years old. It had a Briggs & Stratton. The deck was painted, of all things.., metallic purple! It was branded “Mustang”, and had a self-propel system. I mowed our lawn with it until 1983.
@@scottdoleac5651 …. It had a folding crank handle. There was no losing it. Beautiful design and construction of all steel. The crank snapped in tight as a drum until the day the mower died.
No, it is known and is used long ago. WW2 ends before 80 years There was trucks, airplanes, and other engines equipped with compressed spring starter or hydraulic accumulator. And still they are in use
I had a Fox mini bike that had a Briggs and Stratton that had a folding handle like that. You cranked it up and when you put the handle back in it started it. It also had a two speed transmission.
Cranking direction of rotation looks like a good idea when it takes awhile to fire, too. I spin my push mower with a socket adapter to drill chuck on the nut under the recoil rope, when it fires up I pull the drill up and off to mow.
It's a honda not tecumseh if it doesn't start on the 1st try your out of gas. If your running tecumseh this would be a horrible idea. Not that tecumseh is bad, I have just never owned 1 that started on the 1st pull, it's normally on the 3rd

Omg this is old technology, Briggs and Stratton and Tecumseh had this many years ago way back when I was a kid, my dad bought me a lawn mower to cut grass and make money with, I was then only 10yo and I’m now 69yo, this is amazing to see history repeating itself in my own life time
Had one. Stripped out and wouldn't engage. Talk about frustration. Modern recoil took it place. So much more reliable and repairable. And quicker starting. No more winding up and then disappointment when it fails to start.
I still have 2 of the old wind up type starters that was on the 3.5 HP Briggs engines. One starter is a Never used one I bought off E-Bay years ago. Something old is New again. .
I think everyone is thinking about the old hand crank like the old tractors used to have, this video has a spring tensioner that you wind up and release that catch and the spring tension cranks the engine, I'm 65 years old and I could be wrong but never seen one of these back then, there were plenty of hand cranks around on everything
We had a windup snow blower engine. I remember cranking the folding handle until it stopped, then folded the handle 99%. You'd then have to hit the folding handle right behind the knob, which pushed in a shaft, releasing the wound spring, and starting the engine.
Good old “wrist breaker” starter technology from the 60’s. G’pa gave me his old mower from Sears when I was 10, 1980.Claimed it would sometimes try to start while you wound it up.
The GXV engines were SO much better then the GCV junk that came afterwards. Also that wind up crank start was something I think Tecumseh started? I remember seeing allot of 60s Tecumseh powered mowers with that type of starter.
I had a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower with a flip up handle that cranked up like this, then you flipped it back closed and twisted a knob on the side and away you go.
Everything engine related was invented before 1920 , including fuel injection. Most of it was not widely used for one of two reasons , one it was too expensive. Two. the technology took up too much space. I remember using a wind-up starter equipment Briggs & Stratton lawn mower that belonged to one of the neighbors to cut their lawn . We only had a hand push mower in the late 1950s .
My dad bought a Craftsman mower with a starter like that in like 1971. It never started on the first try and the mower tried to roll back and forth when you cranked it.
I think that everything that has a pool start should have one of them, specially for the senior citizens that still wants to trim their own yards, are their neighbors
I like this idea but for bigger engines.. like a back up for ridin or zero turn but for a push mower? If it don’t start first couple pulls I’m chuckin it 😂
It's about time that it came back. It s a great invention

Victa.
I saw this on a 1960s craftsman lawnmower
Is this solution still used in engines?
Never understood why when it made it easier than the rope starters. Made cost money is always the factor.
I have a 1964 Victa Corvette lawn mower that has this feature

I sure hated that style starter on my parents 70's lawnmower.

Because it wasn’t as “macho” as pulling a cord, or because it was somehow inferior in your opinion?? Be honest…
My grandfather had 1, let me help him cut the grass, I couldn't start a pull mower till I was 10😊@@mercoid
Briggs and Stratton had that back in the 50's 😂
I remember my father purchasing a push mower like that. In the early sixties. That has been around for about 60 years
The original had the crank handle hinged over the winder so you didn’t have to carry it around
It was probably a craftsman. The crank didn't detach.
Yes , exactly even grand ma could easily start it . Wonder why that went away and took so long to come back😂😂😂

It’s only cool when the motor starts on the first crank. After the third or fourth crank, a recoil rope looks like great invention.
Cranking direction of rotation looks like a good idea when it takes awhile to fire, too. I spin my push mower with a socket adapter to drill chuck on the nut under the recoil rope, when it fires up I pull the drill up and off to mow.
If it didn't start by the second crank, u better be looking for something wrong.
