This is one of those songs I saw and thought “I doubt I’ll enjoy this.” Guess who was terribly mistaken?
Lol same!😂

I am opposite of you, I knew I wil love it, but I am glad those guys changed your mind
@@hanadasgardkeindlova2750 tbh I didn’t even know the song lol. I love songs like these and I love when Voiceplay introduces me to new piece of music

Anyone else feel a sudden urge to become a Viking?
England suddenly looks kinda raid-able
Already on my way to the Norman Shores sister.
Sorry history buff here. Viking means the expedition/raid that a vikingr would partake in.
Knew I grew this beard for a reason!
Did you film your reaction tho? 🧐🧐 Love your videos!
My 5 year old listened to this 2 minutes ago. He's now a full grown man getting ready to sail to England.
Good lad!
Good raiding, little man!
I feel this comment down in my guts
That made my day😂🤘
I‘m proud of him, he will be a great warrior
If you've got a nice high male voice, maybe you're a tenor.
If it's warm, and expressive in the middle, you're probably a baritone.
If you got a low voice, that vibrates nearby objects, you're a bass.
But... if your friends ask you to be a stand in for a viking warhorn... you're Geoff Castellucci...
This comment is underrated dear god that is clever and true

Your not wrong.
3 year old daughter (and big fan):
"I really feel sorry for them having to stand outside all the time. They are probably cold..."
That's adorable
This girl is raised well❤
Layne: Damn, a war horn would sound so good on this viking song...
Layne: looks at Geoff
Geoff: Hold my mead.
This group’s career is growing by leaps and bounds! So very nice to see talented young people pursue their aptitudes
I just shared this with my Amtgard group, which is full of "Norsemen". Because I had to. FYI - Amtgard is a medieval reinactment group, like the Society for Creative Anachronism, Rennfaire, etc.
Best comment!
Yes
its Lyne btw
Layne: "Hey Geoff, I have an idea for the bass line. How long could you hold a subharmonic F1?"
Geoff: "Yes."
I think: the whole entire song
Geoff - woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooòoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
You made me laugh sooo much, thanks dude
Is there anything that Geoff cannot do vocally? If so, I'd like to "hear" it. He's as good a singer as I am not!
@@janhankins911 Yeah probably very high notes but apart from that I don’t see anything really

Eli goes so hard in every video, I love them all so much.
Geoff is so badass that his own voice is blowing his hair!
omg this comment :)
lmao I was almost thinking something similar!!! 😂
It seems to be a thing for Men with great voices.
Geoff, Matt Mercer...
i would've loved to see Geoff sporting a historical Viking hairstyle...the men typically had long hair elaborately braided with a high ponytail....it would've been fantastic!
@@kailavanderwielen3588, one reactor who says she has Viking heritage also said she wished they had braided Geoff’s hair. Someone in her comments said they tried, but his vibrations on the low notes undid the braids.
I love how everyone has a nice landscape as a background, and then there's Geoff who just have set a village on fire.
His was a nice village until someone challenged him to a sing off. Then the loser set the village alight so no one would tell how soundly he was defeated
Would you expect anything less?
I want to hear Geoff roar "Bring me Thanos!". Thanos would immediately surrender.
I think it's a bonfire
It's very viking
Layne sounds more like an actual drumset every time. Also, I love how Geoff's subharmonic F1 imitates a horn resounding, maybe as a battle call or something
That’s what he’s supposed to be, a Viking warhorn
I've never tried subharmonics before, but when he hit that F1 I just had to try it. And it worked. Once. Now I can't seem to repeat it. Drat.
This makes me proud that most of my DNA is Viking! Great job guys! That war horn rumble stirs my blood to war like nothing else!
Same. Most of my DNA is Viking too, with hints of Scottish/Irish and Cherokee....❤
my life wont be complete until i hear Tim Foust, Avi Kaplan, And Geoff Castellucci do a song together
I'm waiting for this too
The only problem I would find is that no speaker or studio monitor would be safe, making recording an issue.
you trying to end the world?? 😂
Mine won't be complete until Avi comes back to PTX either :(
I need those 3 and Luke.the.voice from TikTok to do a song together.

FUN FACT ABOUT THIS SONG it's actually a poem that originated from a young boy that killed his first person. He was in such shock about what he's done and his mother was very proud of him. when he was 10 and his mother was proud of him telling him that in stead of putting him under house arrest, the village should buy him a Viking raiding ship right then and there and send him out to show them how its done. So the song explains that since he killed a man (hue many foe-men), he'd grow up as a warrior within the shieldwall with his brothers and sisters in arms. He'd saild to distant shores on his galley, which is a type of boat/ship used at that time. "WHAT IS BETTER - TO BE BORN GOOD OR TO OVERCOME YOUR EVIL NATURE THROUGH GREAT EFFORT" " ANOTHER WAY TO SAY IT, "TO BE BORN GOOD AND RESIST THE ALLURE OF EVIL OR TO USE EVIL FOR THE GREATER GOOD?"
Geoff is a perfect blend of sophistry and brutality, unloved and abandoned, a foundling child born to reign. Geoff has seen the darkness of human nature and found it wanting, with death in his shadow and war in his blood. He eats, sleeps, and breathes war, bathing in the blood of those who defy him. His voice is a weapon he wields to annihilate his foes and woo his beloveds. He is well-known for his abilities. Beware this foundling child, for death follows him.
Eli is young in body but old in soul. He is a tribal Wiseman who keeps to the traditional customs while reinventing them to suit his purposes. He is noted for his ambition and cunning. Be wary of his thoughts and unpredictable nature since it is his most powerful weapon.
Jose is a nomadic nomad with a secret and an extraordinary ability to gather information. He appears kind and innocent, but don't be fooled by his appearance. Behind his beautiful smile and within his gaze is something evil.
J is a young warrior from a far-flung northern tribe. Second in line to the throne and wishing the best for his people, he travels by boat to the flat planes in search of merchants and other Viking clans with whom he may trade commodities in the hopes of forging alliances for his tribe. Straightforward and honest, but with a strong intuitive and keen senses.
Layne is the last of a long-lost clan from an ancient land across the sea. He goes from land to land and village to village, resigned to his fate and lost in his ways, looking for vestiges of his clan. His talent lies in mimicry and deceit.
Someone needs to do this for every video of theirs lol
Yo, this is *amazing*! Not only does it perfectly capture their outfits, it's super inspiring.
I really like creating characters (think dnd-esque ones), and these really got my imagination going. Do you mind if I turn them into something a bit more full-fledged? I'd upload them to a website where you could see, and I'd link back to this comment as credit, of course :3
Love this description/backstory. Could definitely weave a story around these characters narratives

Hope ya'll are listening via headphones not speakers. Otherwise, hold on to your Kansas Dorothy your seat belts going bye bye.
I would like to know exactly what note that is and how Geoff sings it. I've sung it F1 myself a few times but it doesn't sound that cool
Overtones and subharmonics are two different things, bro. And Geoff is only doing the subharmonics. Overtones are inherent part of music itself and are in every note produced no matter the instrument.
The difference in voices and that chorus damn pure chills
Geoff's bass drop sounds like Gimli sounding the horn of Helm Hammerhand at Helm's Deep.
I commented this somewhere, then saw you beat me to it...
I used to think Geoff made some sort of deal to get this talent. This song changed my mind. He simply marched down to the crossroads and took what he wanted.
LMFAOOO😂😂 He raided the devil
Devil stepped back and said," No trouble man. Take what you want."
There's a line in sixteen tons that was delivered in a way that backs up his ability to scare the devil himself.
The part in caps below was delivered via earthquake/demon/earthquake demon.
"If you see me comin', better STEP ASIDE. A lotta men didn't, a lotta men died."
@@Igneusflama Well fellas, there's your proof😎

The original text in Icelandic is:
Þat mælti mín móðir,
at mér skyldi kaupa
fley ok fagrar árar,
fara á brott með víkingum,
standa upp í stafni,
stýra dýrum knerri,
halda svá til hafnar

It's a form of Norse poem attributed to Egill Skallgrímsson, who was likely born in 910 AD in Iceland, although the exact year is unknown. It is said he he composed it after slaying his first man at the age of 7, but i'm guessing there may be some slight exaggeration there :)
The poem is then recorded by Snorri Sturluson in "Egils Saga", but the oldest surviving manuscripts are from the 1700's. We'll likely never know the true facts, but it is very cool to see and hear my heritage being sung by this amazing group. Well done Voiceplay.
How do you pronounce the first letter that looks like a P? I have an Icelandic song in my playlist starts with it as well. Sounds like an English th but i could be wrong 🤔. My phone placed it behind the Z-songs alphabetical wise
@@Taostbrotesserin Yeah a "th" sound is close to it but it needs to be a much firmer sound. Put the emphasis on the very first sound and amplify it a bit. That should get you close to it
@@Kherian4393 Thanks ^^. Do people in Iceland listen to Hatari much? I got to know them through Eurovision in 2019 and I really like them
@@Taostbrotesserin I wouldn't say so. They did get popular with kids in the months after Eurovision but have mostly disappeared since then. They were pretty unknown before Eurovision as well.

It's hard to believe that a song where a single verse is repeated several times could be just GREAT! At first I didn't even notice that it was one verse repeated because each one was so different. Costumes and setting were wonderful.
I'm pretty sure there's another verse in the old norse that wasn't used in the show, so it's often left out of many covers
Exactly! I thought the same thing. Each repeat so different and so marvelous.
It's actually a chant the vikings used.
@@anythingandeverything3987 to be specific, it's a poem by the berserker and Skald, Egill Skallagrimson, who wrote it at the age of 7 after killing a boy as a result of them cheating him in a game. The costumes and makeup are so good! Layne is looking awesome with that intricate face tattoo, and Geoff looks (and sounds) like some underworld god. They do look just like that on first glance, yeah. But on a second thought, and as someone used to high fantasy games... I totally and completely agree!
Pentatonix and Home Free are the other two groups that fit that description. I don't know why we have so much talent these days - maybe as a backlash from all the boy bands and autotune?

As always incredible work from everyone. After hearing Colm McGuinnesse's version I was hungry for more interpretations of this song this scratched a really nasty itch. Thanks a lot guys
Yeah, they're all awesome
Colm is very good in 99% of the songs he does, but I like this version more.
I wasn't ready for how deep that last dudes voice was gonna be. This is great. Loving this song
Listen to Voiceplay's "Oogie Boogie Man" and be prepared.
@@rosemorris7912 the first time I heard the note, I didn't even hear it.
Come to realise today that I don't like instruments. I'm hard of hearing and just sounds like 'noise'. Now I've found my music. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Same here, I like some of this better than instraments, I recommend Avi Chaplin, he does this stuff and is a base.
@@artic-man6930 thanks for the recommendation
With all due respect to Van Canto, this is the most metal acapella song you will ever hear. As is always the case with Voiceplay, everyone knocks it out of the park, but Eli and Geoff are unreal. Geoff's voice has so much menace and Eli sounds ready to rip someone's head off. Never heard him that intense! Valhallacapella perhaps?
I see a t shirt in the making!
Eli has Mortal Kombat “Your soul is mine” vibes
Eli is such a power house! Dude is so freaking amazing. And seems so, so humble about it. I’m so struck every time he lets gets some good powerful solos.
And not only can he sing incredibly well, but that costume is amazing! I LOVE the tattoos on his head and face!!! He looks so majestic :)
He is sincerely that humble and awesome irl. An incredibly good and kind and talented human!
From 2:14-2:20 is legit my favorite moment of this song. I can do ANYTHING in those six seconds. The way he just SENDS it with so much power, incredible!
I love VOICE play GUYS Shannon O'Brien
I Love Eli
Chills every single time I hear Geoff's voice. It's so beautiful and terrifyingly low.
I love how distinct and wonderfully harmonized they are with each other. It's simply a treat to the ears. i know most like the high or low bass notes. But I enjoy melody and harmonization the most I can't help my self. Just how well there voices layer with out one standing out and how seamlessly they work together and know exactly when to give someone else the spot light.
Geoff is so unfair. Not only is his voice incredible but he's also gorgeous?! Save some good genes for the rest of us 😂 (jk, you're all gorgeous)
AND he’s super nice and funny 🙄 greedy much?
Agreed! He has it all
Simp. (I had to)
His voice makes my heart flutter. Lol
Just sexy and so DEEP and vibrating!
Loved the Monster Mash, with his Wife and him.....dancing. 😊👍 The whole group puts on a Show, sings beautifully and......are So Talented!
I am fully convinced Geoff Castellucci is one of those people put on Earth to keep the rest of us humble. There's no other explanation for him.
Come for the bass. Stay, because they are all just so damn good.
We were reading the book Beowulf in my English and I showed my class and teacher this video, I don’t know about the class but my teacher loved it
Ever since my husband showed me this. I have been listening to this at least 8 times a day. I'm hooked!
I am so late to the Voiceplay party... I arrived a whole three days ago....not a single hour has been wasted since. I am totally obsessed. If you ever get over to the UK on tour, I'm there! My soul is soothed and stirred all at the same time. Bliss.
I'm sure you probably have, but if you haven't, check out Home Free and Pentatonix, too. These three groups are kind of the Holy Trinity of a capella. They also have the Holy Trinity of bass singers. (At least before Avi left PTX.)
Welcome to our squad ❤️
@@anniedownum451 oh, I'm totally addicted to Home Free too, they are incredible. As yet, for some reason that I can't explain, Pentatonix have not grabbed me. I love Avi, but that's as far as I've got so far. I'm going to keep listening though! ❤️
@@potatoa9764 thank you! ❤️
@@DarlingNikkiBBB You read my mind about them! I agree with you. Try Natural Disaster and Hallelujah if you want some of the better ones from PTX. With Home Free... you can't go wrong. Happy listening!
Am I the only one who enjoys this in part because it's one of the rare times Laine actually sings? XD
Yes!!!!
Who is laine again?
@@jup1ther27 Layne is the beatboxer of VoicePlay, he's on the rightmost side of the video
No, you're not the only one! I often wrote that I would love that Layne had more singing parts and I love this song so much 😍 (proof, I'm coming back to the vid months after it was released Ahah)
This is what I wanted Pentatonix to be. I mean, no hate on them, They've inspired a lot of people to follow in their wake, but I always feel like they over-sing the songs they cover, and a lot pf people like that so keep on keeping on... They're doing fine without my fandom, and I don't want to be that one voice of dissent in a thousand that is the only one that gets heard. As an artist, it's always the negative that stands out, even when it's the minority.
But this... This is how I want it to sound. This is what does it for me.
So well done. Thank you.
What these guys did here with a simple melody and two-line song is just phenomenal.
Arrangement, dynamics, variation without loss of style or unity, production quality, even the video is perfect. The best a capella can offer.
This is one of my favourites they've ever done
And this is just off of trailer alone lol!!!😂😂😂😂
@@the_gaminghyena it's been on patreon for a while to be fair, but honestly yeah, just the trailer alone is enough 🤣
Mine favorite is poto and this is halloween
Eli looks both badass and terrifying at the same time.
I agree! It's a "last face you're ever gonna see" type of look!
I know!
Eli reminds me of Floki from Vikings tv series.
Eli looks like the type of assassin that says oh do it quietly? Guns!
Ever since I dicovered Geoff Castellucci just a couple of months age and soon thereafter Voiceplay I have been both amazed and mesmerized by Geoff's vocal talent, but the low note in this one takes the cake, I mean the fact that he can hold a low note that vibrate in a way that it can loosen up a locked joint between my shoulder blades, that is just absolutely mind blowing 🤯😍
Anyone else hear this vividly in their heads for hours after listening?
I've never heard a war-horn sound so amazing, let alone from a human voice. Chills
Am i the only one that has this on repeat or???
Loving the wind action on Geoffs hair
That's the blow back from his war roar!
@@yvonnejones9940 lol😂😂🤯👌
When he dropped that deep bass, gave me some serious shivers
Unbelievably talented. I can't get enough of these guys.
Eli understood the assignment, gaddamn
My cat turned into a bear thanks guys now I gotta buy ultimate friskies
Lmao ultimate friskies😂😂😂😂
Werecat 😂
Jajajaja
The terrific thing about this song is that the sophisticated voice notes/chords were incredibly and completely enjoyable.
This is one of my favorite songs I can listen too over and over and now your is my favorite.
woah.. that low bass gives me goosebumps...
"sail to distant shoooreess". my soul was taken under ground
