This was such a BLAST! So hype to see everyone loving it so far and the buzz of the PREMIERE was so humbling to read everyone’s love for the VoicePlay guys! Thanks for letting me join in this Swashbuckling Sea Shanty!!!!
You did so good!!
You were absolutely incredible, Captain Jose!
Haha. I like it Captain Jose! Thanks for the love!
Always a pleasure working with you Jose, thanks for joining us again!
Loved your performance and the way you blend with Voiceplay. Everything about this was astounding!
I'm leaving this comment here in a hope that whenever someone likes it, I'll be reminded of this masterpiece.
I gotchyou

Don't worry, homie. I Gotchu.
I got you too! Time to listen again!
"Lord Beckett, they... they've started to sing, sir."

I'm sorry but is no one going to talk about how Geoff slides up TWO octaves? That's incredible.
that's because he didn't... he started the slide, but it was picked up Jose and then Geoff dropped back down to keep the bass line going. It was a masterfuly done hand off.
@@Sadarsa At 3:02-3:04? Jose is singing with Eli and Cesar. At the same time, we can hear the F4 that Geoff is sustaining at the top of the slide. It may be passed off briefly after but the part I was in awe of was just the slide :)
@@Sadarsa OH yes he did!!!
There's a recording somewhere of him sliding from a D5 to like an E1. He's just fucking insane
I believe F2 to F4
This song was literally made for Geoff, not to talk about the absoloutly stunning elements the rest of the group added to the magnificent piece. Fantastic.
He also does Misty Mountains from LOTR❤❤
"We got a little carried away with this one" I think I speak for everyone when I BEG YOU to keep "getting carried away" because this is indescribable except for the word "perfect"
I cannot help but agree
The only thing I woud point out is the line is "never say we die" and not "never shall we die". The Chinese sailor in Singapore in the movie speaks the line as Emma Swan gets out of the boat, then mentions tht it is a dangerous song to be singing.
Old sailors never die, they merely retire to Fiddlers Green.
Apart from that, the song is the best one Voiceplay has done so far. Keep going guys, we love it, you never fail to go one better every time you do a new song.
@@Tryst46 The official lyrics actually say "never shall we die", though!
@@maeco7 It could be a mistake that the editors of the movie missed then. I would think that using the word "say" sounds more likely, pirates would never have regarded themselves as thieves or beggars.
Also, as I said above, they never die, they simply retire to Fiddlers Green, the sailors idea of heaven. A place where the fiddle never stops, the dancers never tire and the Rum and Tobacco never run out.
Agreed!
"Getting carried away" is the best!
It makes worth watching over and over.
" Getting carried away" gives me the goose bumps everytime!
So Vikings ✅ Zombies ✅ Disney Characters ✅✅ and now Pirates...VoicePlay really are the theater kids of acapella...and as a theater kid I thank you. Now hoist the colors and keep a weathered eye on the horizon lads

Rest of VP: Geoff, what moments are you going to especially focus on in your arrangement?
Geoff: Yes
some of the passing tones and runs between legato notes make the bass player in me jealous

It was so good to hear Eli really able to let go and give it some wellie. He's got such a powerful tenor when the music suits it.
Eli is even more terrifying as a pirate than he was as a viking. If anybody's going to be elected Pirate King, it'll be him! There's just a certain look in his eyes that warns you not to cross him . . .

Usually people like high voices, that's what I'm used to see. I prefer bass voices, I'm just in love with this singer's bass!
I think this quintet is fantastic!
Geoff Castellucci has a solo channel as well, in case you haven't found that yet :)
Me too!
Base and tenor are usually my thing.. The bass singer had my attention from go.. and yet everytime I hear him I'm floored again at the depth and fullness of his voice.
Oh btw Pirates of the Carribean is by Disney ❤

true
Does not get any better.
I was just thinking Eli would make a good metal singer. He seems to be a bit of a dark horse
I don't see enough people talking about Geoff SLIDING up TWO octaves effortlessly
cause it doesn't need to be said it is obvious and we all love it
Eli absolutely kills it! There's power in that voice we don't get to see too often, and the expression on his face...it's like an evil grin, serious, even desperate... and smiling with too many teeth while belting out what's effectively a dirge.
This could have been a complete bass showcase (and I think a lot of people were expecting that, considering all the bass-heavy covers out there), and I'm sure it still would have been amazing like that, but instead this was an absolutely perfect group piece. Everything came together in a beautiful mix of outstanding vocals, acting and excellent production. I really can't get over this one. You guys are amazing.
and that is the point imho because if let's say this was sung by a small sailor group as a choir in the well known tradition of such groups they would have plenty higher piched lads on it as well and not just the bass and baritones. and arrangement would have made use of them the way this amazingly does
I totally agree! I adore Geoff's bass, but wow! Eli's high notes, hey -= they're just great together. This is a perfect group. Layne, fantastic. But yes, I still keep coming back to Geoff. He blows my mind!
Honestly I was expecting a lower focus, also for them to somewhat stick to the intent/feel of the song and go for the constant motion constant rolling, etc feel to the original... I... honestly I actually didn't even just 'like' this one, it's actually the first one of theirs that isn't good in my opinion. Obviously just an opinion, but I was hoping for more, and less of the soloist stuff, less of the look at my jazzy style!... just meh overall I guess, maybe I'll come back in a few months and give the video a like, for now it's neither good nor bad.
Agreed! We weren't sure what to expect from a VoicePlay shanty cover. They've done a fantastic job.
man, i wana see all the bass dudes get together 🍻😎. geoff, tim, peter, bobby, colm, tomi, efi. and have a bass heavy and more authentic to the vibe of the original colab
Eli looks like he's praying or something, Layne is insane, Geoff is glaring at the photographer, Ceaser is drawing a sword, and the other guy, José? Looms like he's about to murder Geoff or Layne. Also got a love the British version of colors nice detail, cant wait to see this!!!
I think that's Jose with the sword and Ceaser on the left.
Whichever he is, the guy in the back on the left looks like an 8 year old trying to fit in with the adults.

I know nothing about the technical side of music. Heck, I know nothing about the layman’s side of music. But I know without question, this ignited an unknown soul fire in me. I’m stirred; for aCapella and specifically Voiceplay. Please never stop creating gents.
Geoff hitting the F1 isn’t the most impressive thing he does in this video. That just shows how amazing he is
what's more impressive is that he hit a d2 without subharmonics😱
Jose : The confident and cocky captain
Eli : The 1st mate standing by his captain but raring to swing over to the other ship and join the fray
Layne : All pirates are off in the head, Layne a bit more so
Cesar : The traumatized captive maybe held for ransom, but more likely never going to see home again
Geoff : The Kraken! Coming up from the depths to take any and all back down with him
Loved this description, so right on.
Underrated comment
Amazing description. I totally agree, but also based on some of his facial expressions; I'd say Cesar is also starting to go slightly crazy, like the rest of the crew. He looks traumatized, but also like he is being "manipulated" into more "pirate manner". If that makes sense.
Totaly.
@@Waterlily6519 the shackle/tamborine is especially poignant. When Layne starts beatboxing and his eyes go wide, he gets this skeletal look that makes you wonder..is this guy beatboxing from the grave? Eli looks straight up treacherous. and Geoff....what can we say...I get dizzy when he hits F1, like my blood pressure dropped. These guys are all Superhuman, aliens amongst us.

I am stunned by each Voiceplay member in this one...from the high vocals of Eli, to Geoff reaching to the depths with his bass, to Cesar with the melody and harmonization, to Layne`s beatboxing...but that look that Jose flashes at 2:15 absolutely slays me!! WOW!!
anyone else watch this on a daily basis?
Cesar freaking me out with that dead eye, Eli killing me with those vocals, Geoff burying everyone in those low tones, Layne destroying those beats, and Jose slicing the air with his sword and great beard. Love it
Can we just talk for a minute about that amazing scene transition with Layne’s cutlass?? It’s that level of attention to detail that blows me away. Other cool details that captivated me:
-the flick of the head with the vocal percussive “HEY”
-everyone subtlety swaying for a few measures
-lighting that looks like lightning
-everyone taking a turn spiking the camera, which was very effective at evoking emotion in me and connection and drawing me in
-VP brands on hands/arms
Now the musical stuff. Eli’s powerhouse gritty vocals literally blow me back in my seat. Just when you think you’ve seen everything Eli has to offer…he offers more. Geoff’s two-octave jump UP rather than down was an incredible surprise (3:02) and although the subharmonics are fantastic and just what the song needs, that C2 on “shall” gives me shivers each and every time (1:00, 2:59). Cesar’s intensity and grit (2:57) show his great versatility (for a great example, contrast his texture and timbre and demeanour in “Butter” compared to this song. WOW.)
Geoff, I think this is one of the most impressive arrangements you have ever done. You have an uncanny ability to take us on amazing emotional journeys with your re-inventions and I will forever be in awe of your arranging talent.
I've spent the last hour trying to add something intelligent to the conversation but you beat me to it! One addition, extra kudos to Eli for his contribution to the lighting design, absolutely amazing! I also deeply enjoy Geoff's arrangements and the sheer volume of talent the whole team brings!
The costumes, the makeup, the special effects etc…… amazing
Never even noticed the brands until you mentioned it. That’s what makes them even better, the little things that only certain people will notice. They don’t any shortcuts.
And the fact that all of them have the brands, even though two don’t show in the video. They commit to their roles.
Very well said!
This came out so long ago, and I STILL CANNOT get over the brilliance!
Props to Geoff for the amazing arrangement.
It's always awesome when Cesar gets his moments.
WOW! Cesar TOTALLY held his own here! So great to see that he can match the exceptional strength of the others when he's not able to do it with high spirits, energy and a smile. It's such a high bar: Eli, Layne and Geoff each have such an intense level of crazy here, and each is so different. Yet Cesar matches them - no one is able to steal the stage from the others because their strengths are so evenly matched. Well DONE! (Don't get me wrong, I love Cesar's other performances, but this one was a whole different style).
Of the five, Cesar's character strikes me as the most tragic, as it seems he's aware of the innocence and the beauty he's lost; Jose and Goeff are in full-blown pirate mode; Eli is crazy manic, and Layne is just crazy ("Don't step on my shadow...").
well said! they make such a great crew! such an amazing blend of personal chemistry!
I didn't know Cesar could be so menacing! And Jose, we want more Jose! Geoff's bass and Layne's drum are of course absolutely insane! But can we talk about Eli?! Oh Gosh....
Agreed, completely!
Eli made my heart skip a beat.
They understood the assignment! I think this is their best one so far! So many components to this that makes it pure magic! One thing that I love is the acting side; it's not just putting together an arrangement and singing it, they understood the placement of this song within the film and its emotional significance and the importance of it for the characters and fully channeled that! Just pure magic! (Obvs the arrangement/talent/vocals/set/makeup are all incredible too)
I can’t count the number of covers Ive heard of this song. I’m a fan of sea shanties (and a wide range of other genres), but, Voiceplay, you’ve stolen my heart.
I'm already a fan of Geoff, but seriously, the melting of all voices are so good. The arangement is just powefull. And now I can't stop listening it. Again... And again... And again...
When Geoff sings on his own, he sings low, but when others pop in, he just drops!
ok everyone did a great job in this song but like, ELIS VOICE JUST FITS HIS ROLE
3:02 Geoff sliding up caught me off guard. Thought that was Jose at first. And then at 3:07 he goes subharmonic. Insane how he can go up and then all the way back down that quickly.
First of all, I've listened to this about 10 times now and I still hear something new each time. This is such a beautifully complex arrangement, Geoff really out-did himself putting this together. I love how different it is from many other renditions of this song, some of the key shifts are *chef's kiss*.
But secondly, I love how the production came together. Jose gives off the captain vibe standing in the middle, Cesar's outfit/makeup is AWESOME and you can see him being a first mate. Geoff is like the intimidating rower. Layne and Eli look like straight baddies on their last stretch of sanity.
I have to say I really enjoyed Cesar's performance in this one, the camera shots of him were so appropriate, the stoic performance with such a haunting tune is just perfect. Okay, I'm done gushing.
Best version yet!!!!! From a singing perspective as well as a production. It keeps you captivated!!!!! Loved the different parts and keeping up with all the eargasm I was getting!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

It's nice to see you here Colm! I hope you stay around. I like how both of your versions and this one are very different because that lets me pick a cover of the song for what mood I'm in. ;)
This song is the one that clued me in to Caesar's range and talent. Absolutely amazing addition to the group!
Also this is irrelevant to the song, but I love watching for the little physical quirks. Geoff and Eli use their hands a lot; Geoff seems to raise and lower his right hand as his voice raises or lowers, and Eli's hands curl into claws (that's how I think of 'em, anyway) the higher he belts, like the support for his high notes comes from his hands. I haven't found anything specific to Layne or Caesar yet. Layne's whole body seems to move to whatever beat he's doing, and it's different song to song. I'll have to rewatch to see if I can spot anything consistent.
When you play D&D and you're the DM in a pirate campaign, and all the players in the party choose bard class characters.
What did I just watch. . . . .
The trio singer (Eli, Jose, Cesar) kills the melody, that smooth blend when they sung together was just so mesmerizing.
Ofcourse, who could forget about Geoff doing stuff that are very confusing on how he does it, he sounds very atmospheric which is as a bass because you don't want singing low that the sound will not surrounds the space around you, making it hard to hear.
And lastly, Layne, I still don't know how he manages to keep the flow going because its hard as the percussion to make this compliment without overpowering someone, but still he got it very precise.
This is why I love VoicePlay so much😊😊😊

@@cesardlr7957 If you were going for creepy and terrifying, congratulations. Well done, sir! 😱
The piece in Pirates of the Caribbean is short / simple, but still darkly dramatic. The Voiceplay arrangement is astounding! Its creepy, melancholy, dark, powerful, strong all at once. The voice talents of each member were simply stellar; above & beyond. Llayne,Eli, & Geoff blew me away & seeing Jose collab'ing w/them again was so good!
This has to be the BEST blending of voices I have ever heard. I actually put this on my phone's playlist and could listen to it on a loop! Definite ear candy!
The absolute best rendition and visual. Perfect pitch.
The Harmony starting @2:36 between Geoff and the other guy is pure perfection.
That 'other guy' would be Layne Stein, their phenomenal vocal percussionist. 😁
@@Debs_Badger yeah he's very good
I just stared speechless at the screen when this ended...I'd expected something cool but this hit me right in the gut! @VoicePlay - Seriously, guys, did you steal Jack's 'take me to what I want most' compass and follow it to some 'unearthly vocal talent' chest in a cave, or what? You're all INSANELY talented- but gotta say, jeez, Eli.... I'm not sure you're even human anymore, and Cesar... you've well and truly made your mark! A gazillion pieces of eight to you all.
Cesar mesmerizes me in this, he isn't just acting his role, he IS his role.
I am absolutely blown away by your music! I could go into how perfectly the harmony fits together and how much of a wonderful sensory overload it is to listen to but...
Eli absolutely unleashed with an appropriate touch of unhinged thrown in! WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! And Geoff busy causing earthquakes! Fantastic arrangement, excellent performance, all!!
The king and his men
Stole the queen from her bed
And bound her in her bones
The seas be ours
And by the powers
Where we will, we'll roam
Yo, ho, all together
Hoist the colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die
Some men have died
And some are alive
And others sail on the sea
- With the keys to the cage...
And the Devil to pay
We lay to Fiddler's Green!
The bell has been raised
From it's watery grave...
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all
Pay head the squall
And turn your sail toward home!
Thanks for printing out the words. I just wish I was smart enough to get the full meaning.
@@katherinkeegan8601 I would like to know more what substances the author of this text smoked 😅
@@alexking930 I know what you mean, I wonder if the group knows the meaning. I personally would find it difficult to sing a song I didn't understand.
@@katherinkeegan8601 I can't say 😅
It makes more sense if you’ve watched the movie it’s from. Without that context, it’s more than a little hard to grasp.
After the sudden stop at the end, you can still hear the "ring" of their voices continue on!
This song really awakens something that has been asleep in me for ages - much like the Ctulhu and my soul, the uncharted waters of the north sea
This is so darn addicting, how many times have this 66 year young grandma listened to this version , not done yet mates, not done yet😀😀😀😀😀
I love Jose and VoicePlay working together they always never cease to amaze me!!
i can’t say how many times i re-listened 1:45, it’s such an incredible harmony i can’t
I love that the pirate brand is "VP". Just noticed that after a year of watching this video.
Holy......crap. THAT was incredible. The whole lot of them looked certifiably insane and sounded awesome. I LOVE it. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I've heard many renditions on UA-cam... wasn't expecting this. Geoff's arrangement is fantastic and incomparable to anything out there. It's cohesive as a whole yet allows each artist to shine. Jose was once again a perfect addition to the group. Eli absolutely stole this one! That man can BELT!! Thanks for the effort you ALL put into your recordings and videos. The comments: you clearly bring a lot of joy to a lot of people and add more fans with every new video. Raise a tot of rum to your health!
Gotta say, props to the person (people?) that do your makeup! I love scars on men, and your makeup artist did a lovely job. Of course, the arrangement, execution, mixing, videography, and the entire performance as a whole is just fire - bravo VP team!
Rick Underwood always does an amazing job with their makeup 👍👍
I can’t get over the dude with the low voice. My phone vibrated every time he hit a low note!! Crazy talented! All of you!
The bass guy (Aka the wonderful Geoff Castellucci) also has some covers on his own channel that are pretty kickass.
@@Justasykoseashell what is his channel?

@@Justasykoseashell thank you I appreciate it ❤
@@the_ratest_boy not a problem. He has some amazing covers on his channel- I recommend starting with Shenandoah!
Obviously the whole group has incredible voices but I am soooo jealous of the clarity and tone of Eli. My word
Yes amazing vocal and performance Eli would make a brilliant Fagin or Scrooge too imo 👌
Geoff and the low note face
Wow! Blown away. The bassist has such a wicked range! Fantastic job, guys!
Man, I'm shivering. It feels like I'm listening to a piece from a musical, not a shanty. It's a beautiful song.
How is this not at a million views yet? I think I've watched it at least 100 myself.
IKR!
Now it’s at 4.7 million views
The most amazing moment in the piece was when the camera was off the peripheral side of Cesar's bad eye then suddenly he sees the camera with his good eye and focuses on the viewer.. frightening.
OMG!!! The most beautiful song!!!
You had me at vikings/skyrim but now pirates? My two most favorite things? Dead. This is amazing.
The arrangement is incredible. I've watched this many times on Patreon and I'll watch this hundreds more times. I had goosebumps for all 4 minutes, especially at 0:17, 0:28 (the glance:)), 0:33, 0:46, 0:53, 1:03 (of course), 1:45 (when it goes like C-Adim7-Bbm (?)), 2:20 (my favourite moment, the combination of loud Eli's voice and those quiet thirds. oh. my. god), 2:31, 2:37, 2:59; 3:05, 3:26, 3:32, 3:39 (of course).:) Each voice is like an important character of the story that is playing his unique role, and at the same time together they are so harmonious and magical. With your acting in the video and this light it's absolutely breathtaking. Thank you so much for the masterpiece!
P.S. Cesar's look is amazing.

And Geoff's and Layne's parts (1:37-2:30, 3:06-3:26, 3:34-3:39) making it all dynamic, but measured. Like sailing across an ocean at night under dark clouds. Calm before a terrible storm that the ship is aiming for. And those mystical and epic higher parts. I. Love. This. Arrangement. So much.
I used to think at school, "Why do music teachers use so many adjectives and emotional words to describe pieces? It's weird!" Now I feel you, music teachers. I'm not sure if all my words are correct, I just translated them literally.:D
That's an incredibly detailed comment! Thanks!
Sorry for this list of timecodes, I just wanted to choose a couple of moments that I like the most.:) When I choosed a couple of dozens, I tried to delete some to leave only the coolest ones, but I gave up. Actually every second of it is the coolest.

This is, without a doubt, the most epic, most amazing arrangement of this song I've ever heard. I've been in love with this song since At World's End came out, and your performance of this song blew my mind. I've never had a favorite VoicePlay song...until now. Thank you for this masterpiece! 💗
this has got to be my favorite cover of hoist the colours high yet
I just can't get enough of this video. The beautiful harmony, the impeccable timing, the costumes, and that mischievous glint in Jose's eyes, the wild look in Eli's eyes, and how Cesar fits in so well...WOW!!! I think I watch this video alone at least 5 times a day. I love all of your music, but for some reason, this one just grabs me and holds on. Love it, love it, love it. Love the group and all the people who sing in it.
Apparently, their monthers were right, they did buy a galley. Only to turn it to a pirate ship, good on them!
I don’t know why this doesn’t have more likes, because it’s brilliant!
This arrangement gives me chills to the bones. In a good way, that is.
I've always loved this song since Pirates came out and these guys just made it such an experience! They went above and beyond to make it their own. By now I shouldn't be surprised that they surprise me with every release... But this one really had me going crazy when listening to it for the first time on Patreon! It has rumbles, it takes you places and it makes your hairs stand up. It's so good!!
Lets also mention the set that looks so good!! Makes me want to be there. Love the details these guys always put into it and the dedication they have to giving us such an experience. The outfits are to die for, by the way! Specially Cesar, yours is amazing and I want!!!
“Now some men have died and some are alive” is sung so beautifully one of my favorite lines he sings
My day is not complete until I listen to at least 3-4 Voice Play performances!
