The video has 2 parts, the first sung in Old Norse, and the second a modern version. For reference, The Vikings Brothers King Harald & Halfdan sung this epic song in the episode S05E10 of Vikings. Old Norse: Þat mælti mín móðir, at mér skyldi kaupa fley ok fagrar árar, fara á brott með víkingum, standa upp í stafni, stýra dýrum knerri, halda svá til hafnar, höggva mann ok annan. English: My mother told me Someday I would buy A galley with good oars Sail to distant shores Stand upon the prow Noble barque I steer Steady course for the haven Hew many foe-men, Hew many foe-men. Music: MY MOTHER TOLD ME by PERLY I LOTRY (Vikings Soundtrack Music).
This was one of the most epic scenes in the series, when both brothers stood, on opposite sides, across a misty valley. Touching, emotional, and simply a wonderful piece of filming.
@Interrupting Cow 'Blood is thicker than water' is taken out of context in modern English. The water is the water of birth, the blood is the blood shed during combat among warriors, shedding blood together is more important than the water you were born from is the origina meaning. Halfdan was no blood traitor. He added another brother to his brotherhood. Refeerence Shakespeare, the Band of Brothers speech by Henry the V if you like.
@@skaterdave03 This isn't exactly correct, the way I know it is "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." Meaning the bonds of friends that you make through meeting them and building a relationship "blood brothers" is stronger than just being born into a relationship and being expected to love them.
Blood traitor? Lol you all need to read the myth of Kumbakarna. It's a Hindu myth with themes of brotherhood and loyalty. One of the morals of the story is to be careful when swearing blind loyalty even to your brother. Halfdan swore on his oath ring(the physical manifestation of his honor) to serve Bjorn. To break that would be an affront to their gods. I wont serve a mad man just because he is my brother. Not to mention Harald was using his brother towards his own goals not considering his feelings or goals. If blood is so thick and powerful and meaningful why did Harald kill Halfdan?
I just remember getting Total Goosebumps when I first heard this song when watching The Vikings, nothing has changed and those Shivers (with a sense of both Longing and Sorrow) still happen when I hear both the original and the new version. AWESOME!
İnancın,birlikteliğin,mutluluğun ve dostluğun bir çok açılarıyla dizide yansıması ve müziklede uyumu mükemmel ötesi bu müzik benimde hayatımda bir çok ilham kaynağı oldu.
If anyone else was unsure: My mother told me Someday I would buy Galleys (type of ship) with good oars (paddles) , Sails to distant shores. Stand up on the prow (bow of ship) Noble barque (another name for ship with oars) I steer. Steady course to the haven (port). Hew (to kill with axe) many foe-man. (enemy).
i dont know why , but Halfdan and Harold were the characters that seemed more viking than everyone else in the show , great actors played great characters ❤
This was sad, but really good. Brothers on opposite sides, they still love each other, and it's nothing personal, just two soldiers that just happened to be on opposite sides.
Being an Indian, I never knew Viking/Nordic songs can touch my heart this way... simply chills whenever I hear the original old Norse songs (in the Vikings series, big fan)... somehow I feel so connected to Viking/Old Norse/Old Nordic culture... don't know why... I feel I am both an Indian and a Viking...
I’m a guy in the southern US who had like 3% Scandinavian DNA on an Ancestry test lol. There’s no real difference between us, anyone who feels it is heathen/Viking. If you feel it, you feel it.
I started singing this to my son as a lullaby. Now when he's really upset during the night(sickness or something) it's the best thing to soothe him down.
I think it was the right time for Ragnar to die because then he died with dignity whereas if he had died of old age in his bed it would have been less dignified.
Halfdan was my favorite character. One of the most interesting characters and I always looked forward to seeing him on screen. All my favs died in this show :(
I had to listen to "My Mother Told Me" several times before I realized the lyrics were intentionally written using only the proto-Germanic part of the English vocabulary, to make it sound as Norse as possible -- hence phrases like "hew many foe-men" instead of "slay many enemies".
I understand after Halfdan went travelling wit Bjorn he seen and felt a new meaning to life , but King Harald is underrated I think, he’s one of the best characters on the show. man never had no luck wit women.
They made great Vikings. Jasper Pääkkönen And Peter Franzén as finnish actors they did awesomely well. Respect to every Vikings fans lets drink from our horns and give thanks to Odin. Respect from Finland
The story of the Brotherhood of Harald Finehair and Halfdan the Black told in Vikings was easily one of if not it's best subplot not involving Ragnar or his Sons. As I saw many many similarities between their relationship and that between my own brother and myself. They both loved each other, and stood beside one another being the one person that they never once doubted was in their corner, but as with everyone, they found themselves at a bridge that neither one could cross to the other, and even though it put them on the battlefield on opposite sides, neither one of them lost their love for the brother they had to fight. Brilliant writing and absolutely phenomenal acting for both of them.
This is my favourite version of the song my ancestors (The Morrison clan) allegedly helped king from a boat rec but who knows. I just know it reminds me of my brother x
I'm so sorry. My sister died a few years ago but she'd got me my strength for life. My brother died 6 year ago since he ignored me in a life threaded Situation. But both are in my heart each and every day. I hope you have one day your Peace with this lost. I will never forget this

I always wished they made a spin off series of Bjorn Ironside and Halfdan. It would be incredible
They are making a spinoff series called Vikings: Valhalla
@@nomimAh yes, netflix i believe is currently making it
@@nomimAh it was pretty good, it doesn't hit like the original but that is just not possible anymore
@@peileed can't even compare it, the only good character is Canute
@@peileed It was not pretty good. It was vikings without amazing characters.
This was such a powerful moment 😢
The video has 2 parts, the first sung in Old Norse, and the second a modern version. For reference, The Vikings Brothers King Harald & Halfdan sung this epic song in the episode S05E10 of Vikings.
Old Norse:
Þat mælti mín móðir,
at mér skyldi kaupa
fley ok fagrar árar,
fara á brott með víkingum,
standa upp í stafni,
stýra dýrum knerri,
halda svá til hafnar,
höggva mann ok annan.
English:
My mother told me
Someday I would buy
A galley with good oars
Sail to distant shores
Stand upon the prow
Noble barque I steer
Steady course for the haven
Hew many foe-men,
Hew many foe-men.
Music: MY MOTHER TOLD ME by PERLY I LOTRY (Vikings Soundtrack Music).
The fact that people can hear them sing together is beautiful
this scene give me goosebumps everytime i rewatch vikings. Absolutely love this song and the old norse language
Same, ive watched it twice and there are soo many moments like that
This was one of the most epic scenes in the series, when both brothers stood, on opposite sides, across a misty valley. Touching, emotional, and simply a wonderful piece of filming.
Bjorn saved his life and he lived for Bjorn, today people just say Thank you.
@Interrupting Cow his brother was crazy and would kill anyone just to be king. I would betray him.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
After all this time after that episode, when I hear this being sang by them it's just so haunting and beautiful for brothers last song.
This serial is definitely a masterpiece. I'm crazy about this one.
One of the most emotional scene ever written ❤
This scene was seriously one of my favorites and chilling
Binging the show right now. This scene hit different.
I just remember getting Total Goosebumps when I first heard this song when watching The Vikings, nothing has changed and those Shivers (with a sense of both Longing and Sorrow) still happen when I hear both the original and the new version. AWESOME!

I loved both Characters, Harald and Halfdan, i would love to see an independend series about their journey!
une scene et tu as envie de te retaper des épisode de la série ... incroyable
Halfdan is the most undereated character
Definetely, one of my favourites, wish he didn't die so soon
Hearing Harald and Halfdan sing gives me chills every time
Harold yes not harald
Ein tolles Lied. Es vermittelt Kraft, Mut und Stärke. 👍
If anyone else was unsure:
My mother told me
Someday I would buy
Galleys (type of ship) with good oars (paddles) ,
Sails to distant shores.
Stand up on the prow (bow of ship)
Noble barque (another name for ship with oars) I steer.
Steady course to the haven (port).
Hew (to kill with axe) many foe-man. (enemy).
Thank ye matey
Good explanation. Well deserved for such an epic poem/song.
GALLEY OR GULLEY???
I was literally about to go and look up the words 😮💨
is not the same lyrics!
i dont know why , but Halfdan and Harold were the characters that seemed more viking than everyone else in the show , great actors played great characters ❤
Because they were finns
@lifemocker85 They were actually in Norwegian area. Well Harald was in fact the one who unified the kingdoms and created Norway.

I've never actually kept going back to a video until I've seen this
This was the 1st time I heard My Mother Told me sung in Nordic and was blown away
Awesome
The one who played king harold is a such of a brilliant actor.really good one!
To clarify, I’m making fun of myself in relation to the DNA test, I’m saying you have as much a claim as I do.
Or you are just a guy who enjoys music from other cultures, no need to look deeper than that
Q ki bhai humdono ka culture thora same hai
Ino european
This scene was truly heartbreaking. Two brothers realising that they were about to face each other and singing together for the last time.
I started singing this to my son as a lullaby. Now when he's really upset during the night(sickness or something) it's the best thing to soothe him down.
That day died the wrong brother .. I felt it almost like ragnar's death
❤
@Kel'Thuzad you're 100% right.
I think it was the right time for Ragnar to die because then he died with dignity whereas if he had died of old age in his bed it would have been less dignified.
Wrong son died!!!
Halfdan is definitely one of my favourite viking characters, his development was insane.
I absolutely love the harmonies of this song...mysterious and beautiful...
One of most climatic scene, this calm and patient before battle begin. Their singing to be concentrate when stand against own brothers
God my heart
This was one of the best scenes of all time
Cried so much over it
Watched that series 5-6 times. Every other time open up new vision and understanding. Harold is a very strong character and actor as well.
Damn I’ve only watched it 2x.
I think Halfdan was one of the best hearted vikingrs other than Ragnar.
Ragnar never struck me as someone who had a good heart. Maybe season one Ragnar
I would definitely add Ubbe too
@@kkaann911 ye ubbe definately
He murderd the family hiding in the barn in france and nailed to kids to steaks to be burned
@@lukekane8157 that's pretty fucked up
The sheer ominous loneliness brutality harmoniousness of this song speaks to my soul like no other. Born at the wrong time and place.
HONOR,BRAVERY,RESPECT & ADVENTURE = Halfdan, One of my favorites. Much Respect to you and All who live of this stature🙌
Halfdan was my favorite character. One of the most interesting characters and I always looked forward to seeing him on screen. All my favs died in this show :(
They should have just made the whole series a musical where Harold travels around Norway singing with his troupe of singing vikings.
I can imagine now a Broadway musical....
Spin off
Damn that‘s so intense, one of the best scenes ever! Halfdan and Harald two of the best
This was one of the most beautiful episodes 🥺 I really loved the bond between this two brothers
This series got me through the hardest period of time in my life, amazing acting and plot, one to always remember
Один из сильнейших моментов в сериале. Песня просто до мурашек.
Согласен. Когда первый раз смотрел этот сериал, понимал что щас кто то из них умрёт. Жаль что хальвдан умер((
I had to listen to "My Mother Told Me" several times before I realized the lyrics were intentionally written using only the proto-Germanic part of the English vocabulary, to make it sound as Norse as possible -- hence phrases like "hew many foe-men" instead of "slay many enemies".
This still gives me chills. On of my favorite scenes in the whole show.
I wrote this comment before the added singing started. Wow just wow.
I understand after Halfdan went travelling wit Bjorn he seen and felt a new meaning to life , but King Harald is underrated I think, he’s one of the best characters on the show. man never had no luck wit women.
Magic is represented so well in this show.
It’s subtle, ambiguous and yet just casually acknowledged by everybody.
One of my all time favorite scenes
Hail all father odin
Haiil All's Father!!
Of one m'y best épisode of the entière séries 😢 RIP Halfdan ❤💪
Miss Halfdan....one of the best Viking Characters.
the brother with honor, and the other who is looking for his honor and throne.
The understatement is "my mother told me" hold a bearing in the warriors mood whenever this song is sang. Respect!
They made great Vikings. Jasper Pääkkönen And Peter Franzén as finnish actors they did awesomely well. Respect to every Vikings fans lets drink from our horns and give thanks to Odin. Respect from Finland
Одна из хороших сцен, прекрасного сериала! Пересматриваю каждый год!Всем советую!
I always come back to watch this. Always chills. 🛡️
They didn't have to fight they could've just walked last each other or do what Ubba did
My brother died a few days ago and this plays in my head every day 🤜💔🤛
This is my favourite version of the song my ancestors (The Morrison clan) allegedly helped king from a boat rec but who knows. I just know it reminds me of my brother x
