- I have gotten lots of questions about how to use UV resin; what kind of UV lights? how durable is it? and lots of others. I have answered many of those questions over a few videos (see the playlist link below) but, here I try to hit some of the most asked questions and some tips that you might not get anywhere else.
• UV Cure Resin
Here are some links to the lights and resin I'm using.

So, I know the sound quality is not up to snuff on some of my videos but, I'm slowly convincing myself that cheap Chinese knockoff microphones are not going to get it done. Now I have to convince myself to drop the big bucks on quality gear. I have made a bit of an upgrade since this one so hopefully you will hear the difference in the next vid. Thank you to everyone for putting up with it...I really am working on it.
I’m a professional audio guy. Full time at church and musical theatre on the side. If you need any advice on quality equipment for reasonable prices let me know.
Watching guys like you makes a person realize how difficult it is to produce a great video. You make it look easy to create high quality shows. Well done!
Would love to see a video going into detail about airbrushing uv resin
Another outstanding video! Keep ‘em coming, I cringe to think how much time your videos and sharing of knowledge have saved me in my dive into this hobby! Thank you!!!
Thank you very much!
The best video about UV resin I've seen so far!
Glad you think so! Thanks so much.
This is my favorite topic! Since I'm still getting bubbles and spikes 2 in 4 times
Just another great and informative video! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us.
So nice of you...thank you.
Hi, this is the field I have never worked on yet. These tips were just great and I will soon grab my hand on some resin work. Another great video and just keep them coming. Have a nice week.
Thank you, I'm glad you found it interesting.
Another great vid, thanks. I had trouble with UV resin until I built a turner just for that.
Glad it helped...thanks.
I am getting back in to tying flies, and I use a $30 uv flashlight I purchased on Amazon. It works amazingly well.
So nice to have the technology...beats the old school glues.
Awesome video, thanks
Great video!
Great tips. I’m going to use a few on my guitars! One tip- a guy that sells UV lights told me that mirrors don’t reflect UV light. He said to use the shiny side of aluminum foil. Glue it down with some 3m spray glue. I tried it in my curing booth, works great, and it’s cheap!
That is a common belief. And it has some truth in that UVB is blocked (mostly) when it passes through glass. We are using the UVA part of the spectrum and UVA passes through glass...mirrors will work but not as quit as good as highly polished foil or silver finished vinyl laminate. But if you just have a low polish foil you are better off with mirrors.
Thanks for the clear explanation..
You are welcome!
Thank you so much for the information!.
You are so welcome!
Sir I have a question about the violet dye. Do you use alcohol dye for the UV resin? How do you measure and mix the two? About per grams of UV and drops of Dye? THANK YOU. I have a problem of yellowing on some of my lures. Hope you reply. Thank for the video. Fish be with you
I’ve been using Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast so far. Can’t complain but nothing to compare it to. UV seems popular and I’m curious to try it. I’ve been trying to get TrueCoat but shipping is pricey for me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on UV, much appreciated.
Glad you find the videos helpful.
Me gustado mucho y e aprendido mucho, gracias.
if not the best you are surely among them....
Great video..
I'd like to point out though!
Epoxy thins with heat... So, if you were to dip it, or brush it, a heat gun or mini butane torch can help remove excess epoxy much quicker & the heat pops any bubbles that do form.
I've been using epoxy for many things for many years.
Just recently a friend got me into doing lures, as I am an "artist" ( family & friends words not mine. ) So I have been replecsring alot of forage species the last 6months to a year. Not as good at it as I'd like. Ut my buddy is super happy to not buy new lures & refurb his old tried and trues
Apologies...
Replacing not replecsring or whatever autocorrect went too
When spraying the UV out of airbrush gun can you use Xylene to clean out the excess epoxy after spraying? Your videos are extremely helpful and informative. You are one of the best I’ve seen on UA-cam for airbrush information and really appreciate you spreading the knowledge and helping us all out.
Thank you for the kind words. Yes you can use Xylene, works fine.
Tack galore
So... again, thanks for a great video .I have about five channels I follow. When one comes up like yours I almost want to have popcorn.
A couple of points. I brush my resin on and have never noticed it sagging. I have a tank made by doubling up a couple of nail dryers. I do brush it on carefully and try not to let it build up though.
Second, and I could be wrong. You mentioned that you can add mirrors to help reflect the light on a lure. I was of the understanding that mirrors won't work. You have to use other types of reflective surfaces like foils. I don't know why but I'd imagine that the refraction through glass might mess up the wavelength needed ???
Thnx again...I watch all you stuff when it comes out.
Thank you for your input...it is good to hear from fellow lure makers.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have a UV light from a printer its 60w and 405nm do you think this would be to much for in my lure turner or will it be ok? thank you in advance!
No 405nm won't work very well.
Can you use this as a quick clear coat for a scratch on your car, so you can wet sand and buff it after quickly
I use the chinese one, work's really well. In my opinion it is much practical than 2 part epoxy cause you can't miss the mix you don't have any waste you keep your brushes and it is far more quicker! Al i see is advantages!
Great point!
Great information - thanks for sharing! A quick comment about (all) epoxy resins - you should minimize contact with it! Even getting a small amount on your fingers should be avoided as the acquired sensitivity is cumulative and the allergic reactions to it are less than pleasant! Please warn your viewers.
It's that time of year that temperatures are below freezing at night here in Canada so in preparation I cut a basswood log into lumber to make lures from this winter so I will be reviewing many of you videos. I got some of that Chinese resin - how do you like it? Do you have any comments or suggestions on using it?
The Chinese resin works just fine and gives you an nice glossy finish. Good luck with your winter carving.
Great tutorial very intuitive, do you use the alcohol to clean the resin from your air brush?
No, you need a much stronger solvent. I use acetone.
Awesome video. I am just getting into the UV resin. Seems to be pretty rock hard which I love. 2 questions.
How many coats of polyacrylic do you apply to the paint before you put on the uv resin? Can you use the aerosol polyacrylic or should I make the 85% to 15% water mixture and spray from my airbrush?
And 1 more thing. If I am going to put a 2 part epoxy over the uv resin would you sand the uv resin to create some grit for the 2 part to adhere to or just go straight ontop of the cured uv resin with no sanding?
Thanks for all you do it's much appreciated!!
I usually apply 2 Coats of polychrylic before I clear coat. You can use the aerosol or you can mix it the way I do it's up to you.. And and if you're going to put any resin clear coat over UV resin you should give it a very light standing or at least deglaze it with acetone.
Thanks for that! I'll do 2 coats of the poly! With the uv resin can you brush it on and do a hanging cure as opposed to turning it? If I get some 4 ft uv tubes and fit them in a long box. Just curious before I go through the effort of building a big expensive curing box that doesn't turn
Hi mate, so sorry to bother you. But your def the man to ask about this UV resin.
Just started to that cheaper brand as I’ve always used a two part resin for fixing surfboards/paddle boards for years.
I’ve been having problems with it going off (under the Uv nail machine 38watt) but still remaining .... rubbery feel ? If you know what I mean ? It’s not a hard set like my other resins ?
My question is .... due to me having to use it in my garage/workshop and it being winter here in England (approx 10deg).
Do you think it’s the low temps that are effecting the resin as the nail machine is just floating over the top ?? And not within a sealed cylinder like yours an keeping warm ??
I tried my normal two part and this again took absolutely ages to gel up, so brought it in to place over a radiator and it then set hard !!!
What’s your thoughts 😎😎😍😍🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
Temperature can definitely be a problem. The UV resin is not happy under 21 C. Takes much much longer. It helps to get the item as close to the bulbs as possible...nearly touching. Best of luck, cheers.
hi thankyou for videos. i was using these too but then i see it block the fluorescent or glow colors die. maybe cause of what king a resing i use , i try 2 3 different resin but it was same. blocking the glow and fluorescent colours. want to know did you see like this thing before. thank you again
No I have not seen this on mine.
Awesome videos. Could you please let me know what number sandpaper are you using when the resin is dry? I saw different videos people doing wet sanding.
320 grit is wat I use
@@EngineeredAngler awesome, thanks
Very Helpful! Thank You! By the way, I feel like the 2-part resin has a slightly harder finish than UV resin. Maybe it's my imagination though. What have you found?
Well, I have done some rudimentary hardness tests and the UV tends to be harder and more brittle...But I'm not swearing by my findings. It could be that there are harder two part resins that I have not used.
I buy two gallons or more a year $75-$90 each of lame floor urethane, & wish to substitute with uv resin...not many resin options for artists? Only found solarez.
awesome...you should post on the Brotherhood
Is that the same Brotherhood that Trump is trying to break up?
@@robertcornelius3514 no...My Trump is Canadian....Brotherhood of Custom Painters
I have been a member for a while but I try not to offend folks with posts of my videos. I'll start posting photos of lures though... thank you.
Very informative!.... when you say violet... can you explain, paint, powder, other?
It is a resin dye, you can get it in many colors but for the clear resins it must be transparent dye.
@@EngineeredAngler where did you find it
Lots of places to get it but I bought mine from Alumilite.
So my Alumi-UV in the can seems really thick and I was wondering if your method of diluting it with denatured alcohol can be used for dipping?
Yes you can dilute it and dip it...just remember that the alcohol will evaporate pretty readily and you will probably have to add more no and then.
When you mentioned violet to the resin, what did you add to make that so?
This is the product:

Good evening Sir, do you mind sharing the brand of the uv resin in the quart container is it one part?
The UV resin in the quart container is an industrial version the hobbyist resin I typically use. I have not shared the brand name because it has turned out to be a low quality product and I do not recommend it. Like all UV cure resin, it is one part, catalyzed by exposure to UV light. Cheers.
Hello, I’ve reviewed your playlist and still have a question. Sorry if you’ve answered it. I’m using the ‘UV Resin Hard’ 100g bottle to clear coat my lures. When I brush on the resin there seems to be spots that stay dry*. I spin it in my drill (probably spins 1.5x faster than your rig) and it doesn’t seem to do any good. What ensures perfectly round perfectly smooth finish? Rotating at right speed? Viscosity of resin? The perfect amount of resin? I see you brush it on initially and it already looks perfect and not runny.
If it isn't smooth after brushing you have some issue with the paint interaction. In my videos I show how I seal the paint with Minwax Polycrylic.
Amazing. I did consciously skip that step! I’m on lure #3 thanks to your help. Hope the channel is giving back in some way.
Can you touch more on the subject about airbrushing the uv clear...
You mean applying the uv clear with an airbrush?
Yes sir..
@@EngineeredAngler. yes sir
If I have a really big lure to cure under a uv light, can I use a suntan booth? I'm just curious.
I'm not sure where on the UV spectrum the tanning booth lights fall...and the Wattage density might to get it done.
I use fish a top water lure when I returned to the world after 2 tours in Nam. The lure was called a crazy shad, when cast it would sit nose up maybe half inch, only one prop on the tail triable hook. I found a lure similar made in Brazil. But those are overhaul smaller in size. It was plastic, silver black back. The belly was shaped like a crank bait thicker and tapered on both ends.
Now, this may sound nuts, but I would lite sand to make a dull shine.
My question have you ever made one similar to this Crazy Shad ? I believe wood would work, but have no idea how to get lure to goto a standing tail down with very slow jigging motions like a brim snapping the surface and tail spinner for kicking tail as if wounded, trying to feed. If you send an email with a picture of the Brazilian model crazy shad. Thanks
It should actually be quite easy to get the action you describe. The lure will me naturally tail heavy. Try it, I think you'll find it will work just fine with little refinement. best of luck.
Are you adding violet paint to the clear resin? And how much? I can't thank you enough for the time you have saved me.
8 drops of transparent violet resin dye to each once of resin seems to work to keep the yellow down. Thank you for watching
@@EngineeredAngler thank you sir! Your channel is top notch!
Hi, i'm just getting into painting lures, new and old and would like to know the best UV coating for lures, out here on the west coast we do a lot of salmon and steelhead fishing, lures with UV or Glow + UV are popular, your thoughts, Love your videos
Well UV reflective paints and UV cure resins are very different things...I assume you mean UV reflective paints or coatings. I honestly don't have much experience with UV reflective coatings since they only really become affective in water depths more than 25 + feet. I fish in water depths averaging around 6 feet. Sorry. I should probably do a video on the subject....
@@EngineeredAngler you correct on what i am looking for, i would like to paint some things in certain colors and have the UV coating enhance my lures. i understand how the resins work and will play around with that as well, these UV dips and sprays are out there, i just can't find much, thank you
@@EngineeredAngler do you have any videos on mold making or how to cast hollow baits? Thanks
Take a look and see if any of these videos help. Lure Molds: ua-cam.com/play/PLEVBv_zywucTBRjaOqqH-T4RLTj1K3tCK.html
I have painted lure do I have to put something over them before I use the resin
The surface needs to be glassy smooth...a good glassy clear coat should do it.
Hello Engineer Angler, greetings from Peru. First I have to tell you thta your videos are always fun and interesting. You have responded to many questions I had about using UV resin instead two parts coating. Your tips were very useful to me. Given that I live in Peru, it is not easy to get all the variety of products that you have in the USA. I would like have your recommendation of what brand/type of UV Resin to buy. Een though that in the meanwhile I don't see a closer trip to the USA , I have some ways to get stuffs from there... I will appreciate your help if you give me a hint to start with the right one for my wooden lures. I have a rotary dryer and it could be easily covered with UV lights. Before to say goodbye, whenever you have a chance you may visit my channel to see the last video that I posted. I showed a tiny wooden handmade plugs for Trout fishing. Ii will appreciate to have your recommendations to improve my work. Well take care and let's keep in touch.
This is a link to the product I am using.

It works very well...good luck. I will visit your channel.
Thanks for your hint... I will ask my wife to bring me one to try it... she is going to the US this week. I’ll be more than happy to have your visit to my humble channel. Take care..👋👋👋
I'm having trouble with uv resin going on for smooth coat. Streaks, gaps, holes. Tried doing a second coat, even heated bottle in cup of hot water to try and thin it. Let it turn for 5-10 minutes, was getting worse. Hit with hair dryer low air to get it to warm up and spread. Ended up with a finshed looked like covered in clear mosquito bites. Kinda cool, actually going to fish it but not what I wanted. Ideas????
Wish I could send a picture of the plug.
Absolutely send me a photo to EngineeredAngler@gmail.com.
Couple pictures sent.
hi you mentioned you added alcohol to the Chinese made UV resin for air brush. won't it choked the air brush. also when you say alcohol , it is IPA iso propyl alcohol? Thkx.
I use denatured alcohol to thin the resin about 25% by volume. It sprays well through an airbrush. Clean up is with acetone.
@@EngineeredAngler can I just use IPA which is 99% alcohol or Xylene. Acetone not available.
@@EngineeredAngler what is denatured alcohol
Can you please list the brands?
Sure, I'll put them in the description...
How do you get the thick clear coat look?
Watch my vids...there's lots of info.
Sorry im not native speaker , the thinner you said for uv resin to sprey is denatured alcohol, is it the same with denatured ethyl alcohol ? Thank you 😊
It is the same as ethanol.
Thank you :) im newbie and your vid is very helpful!
Joss gandoss👍
How do you tint your resin violet?
Transparent Violet resin dye
How much violet color would you put in a quarter pound of resin
8 drops per 30ml is what I have been using.
I know this is 3yr ago but can I use a LED BLACK LIGHT? 30W
Probably not. Check the frequency of the light,. Hopefully it is on the label. If it is between 365nm to 395nm it will work.
What do you do about the uv resin that covers the eyelets?
I clear it with some needle nose pliers.
@@EngineeredAngler Thanks! I love the work you've done. I'm an engineer as well working on making lures via 3d printing.
i dont know what it is but i have no audio this video but captions work fine
will cfl lights gel your resin or am i safe with cfl light
No, cfl lights give off almost zero UV.
@@EngineeredAngler k thank you for answering been using etex and thinking about making the switch to the chinese uv resin you mention in the previous video
Do you believe UV resin is as durable as regular epoxies for clear coating lures? (e.g. etex) Thanks!
Yes, absolutely. It goes on thinner so an extra coat or two is needed.
Hi there! I have studied audio engineering and production, if you would like, I would be more than happy to mix and master your sound for your videos. Absolutely love the channel, big cheers from Sweden 🇸🇪
Same here, but lets make it simple. @EngineeredAngler: Just convert your voice- audiotrack to mono. So then we will hear youre voice on both speakers.
Nice content as always👏👍, thank you and greetings from Germany🇩🇪
What i don´t like about UV-Resin is the very strong smell of it (ChineseBrand)
Thank you will do...
Thank you so much... I'm pretty sure I have some hardware issues...I hope I can work them out. Otherwise I might get back to you.
Engineered Angler no problem, just give me a shout if you need it
You putt thinner or not.in side epoxy uv
Only if I spray it on.
Can't hear a word you say on my cell phone. Hear advisor's just fine. Had to turn captions on. Please consider redoing video.
Thumbs down. Wast of my time. Can't hear.
Sorry but...plays fine for me. Not hearing issues from others. Maybe try with another device.
