I have another tip! If you're working with larger pieces, you might notice your flat pieces will bend and bow. This is due to uneven curing. Set your UV light up at a greater distance from the piece, 6 inches to 1 foot (about 15 - 30cm) away. Your cure time will be longer, but a bit more even. Also, set-up reflective foil or mirrors under and around the mold. I've made a folding mirror box by sticking cheap self-adhesive acrylic mirrors to a folder. This bounces the UV light around so it can hit the resin from more angles than just directly from the light above the mold.
I just did a YT search on "how to fix sticky UV resin" and the first video I watched suggested putting the piece in water. I thought, "Hm. I wonder if that will work, and why does it work?" Then your video was next in line and now I have a better understanding of WHY it works. Thank you so much!
Thank you, Daniel! No penguins were harmed while making this video. As for me, I get sticky pieces because of the gloves - there is always some fresh resin on them from touching the bottle and holding edges of pieces while spreading a layer of resin on them.
Something I noticed with my nails. Over the next few days, my nails will continue to harden. Also, when I have very pigmented polish, I have to use several layers. That's why some gel polishes seem thin and not heavily pigmented. It's really to ensure that the polish gets a good uv light exposure. Your coverage of uv resin was excellent, Daniel.
Hi Daniel! Thank you very much for addressing this topic! I am one of those people who abandoned the uv resin a bit precisely because it stuck and the creation ruined and I didn't understand why! 😢With your video I finally realised the problem! 😅Thank you so much !! 👋👋
😮omg, this is a brilliant tip. I have just made dried flower coasters and top coated them with UV resin and they didn't cure fully. They were sticky. I tried everything. I sanded them. And tried again with the same results... I posted a pleasure for help to the internet and was advised to come to your youtube video. And I fully understand what happened now. I had my fan on towards me as I was curing the UV. My little penguins didn't stand a chance. 😢. Thank you Daniel for your advise and tips. I've been doing resin Art for several months but just started with UV. another learning curve..
I learned this from some girls channel about 2 years back. I was going to give up before I dredged U tube looking for the solution. Works EVERY time now.😊
OK, so I need to thank you, profusely! I am using UV resin with glitter on a tumbler, so water submersion is not possible (it cures on a tumbler turner) But with your suggestion of a cover, and someone else's suggestion of mirrors, I put a clear bin over top of the turner with the light inside, and some aluminum foil underneath, and it's perfect! Thank you thank you thank you!
I know this is my second comment but my charms came out so great today!! They used to accumulate so much dust because of the stickiness… thank you so much again sir you have really changed my life😭😭❤️❤️🌷
I just picked up UV resin for crafting today for the first time. Thank you for your tips, you've almost certainly prevented me from making some simple mistakes.
Thank you for explaining the details of uv resin in a better way! I hadn't thought about oxygen interference nor water curing. You've helped me out of a "sticky situation " 😂😂
Oh thanks for this, who would have thought just popping it in water would stop those penguins from shivering!! I’ve saved this tip to my little black book of tips, thank you. Hugs x Ann x
Thank you sooooo much for this! I'm new to UV Resin and you just saved many innocent penguins from the landfill due to my lack of knowledge. 😅 You're awesome!!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I am just starting out with epoxy and UV Resin and reading/ watching everything I can about safety and troubleshooting. You have answered so many questions and prepared me for a multitude of other possible events that will occur in my endeavors. Glad I stumbled across you Daniel, and trust me I had to search, hate the algorithms. smh
You are the GOAT Daniel.... I started following you way back when on Facebook or IG ... you wouldn't give tutorials ..for a good reason coz you started this channel, I have been struggling with this "sticky resin" since I started using UV..... I sanded a piece back today and used your genius tips... it worked spectacularly. I really appreciate the sustainability side of this because quite a few have been un salvageable and have ended up in the trash. Keep on keeping on, I appreciate all your tutorials!
I only use resin to coat my polymer clay jewelry. The very first resin I ever tried was one that just wouldn't fully cure. I decided to figure out why and ,learned about oxygen inhibition. The solution I came up with was to apply a coat of Varathane over the top of my piece and give it one more cycle under the light. I'm glad I discovered this because I had to try several brands of resin before finding one that would actually fully cure. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad to have other things to try in case I have this issue again.
I've tried water curing on a few sticky pieces before. Some worked, some didn't. The ones that didn't I left on a shelf for 2 weeks, came back to them and they were fine. So even if it's still a bit tacky, don't give up yet. I also started leaving my mixed UV resin in a cheap jewellery box. Some of the deep bubbles when colours or additives were mixed in hard were being tricky. I left them in the dark box for an hour, came back and they were totally bubble free. I can't afford a vacuum chamber so now I mix in advance.
I love the penguins analogy! The water technique is the one that I learnt from you a while back, and on the odd occasion if my UV resin piece is sticky I pop it in water. Ta da! 👍☺️🇬🇧
Awesome. I thought it was just me doing something wrong . I’ve tried several UV brands had some successes but frustrated with the sticky losses. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us!
@debrakowalski9332 Another tip @daniel..cooper showed us was to pop our sticky pieces into a clear glass/plastic co tainer of water, and shine the UV lamp through that. It works like a charm!
This is a super useful video, thank you! When I first tried UV resin, I had a sticky experience which put me off! But I've persevered and watching your videos definitely help! Enjoy your experimental videos and finished creations! Thanks!
Thanks so much Daniel, excellent explanation. Something that might help someone; I had an extra nail lamp with a (plain plastic) broken leg, so I snapped off the other one and now use it upside down - under my clear glass platform setup. So I'm using two lamps simultaneously, and don't have to flop the mold over for a second cure. Watch your eyes if you try this, I have a dedicated opaque box that I use over all anyway - just in case.
oh my gosh! that makes so much sense! I use a fan in my craft room for ventilation, I thought I was being smart. SMH. the small cup is genius. thank you so much for the explanation. I'll do all I can to keep the penguins warm! ;)
Thanks so so so mush I new to uv resin and out of 10 pieces I made yesterday the largest one was tackey on top the rest was 2 part and I relized I dint fill it to the top so used uv to fill the 2part was cumply cord. I have a 3drezin coring box so I did it in ther for 4 mins. Came out tacky so I left it in garden all day as its was a lovle hot day in UK. And still nuthing found your vido did the watter trick and it worked ❤❤
@@daniel..cooper I wanted to send you a picture of the lamp, but I can't do that on UA-cam, which is a shame. P.S. keep up the good work If you want to buy such a lamp, you have to pay attention to the wavelength
UV light + magnifying glass; that'll get it hot right? lol As a traditional archer; I'm going to be using resin to help my arrows last longer~ It looks like small thin layers will work best. How durable is resin? Guess I'll find out, seems easy to apply.
I make resin DND dice, and I've had a few issues with resin not curing and such. I intend to 'hide' these imperfect pieces inside a *giant* D20. Because they're still *beautiful*, they're just not perfect. Thank you for encouraging the use of imperfect pieces in that way! (Although not exactly what you said!)
One way I use to cure is get a white sheet of paper and place the item on it then your light, I have a 4 inch light. Then on top of the loght or around the opening of the light, put white paper. I use index cards. This has made my uv items cure quickly. But i still had issues because of the inks. I found some uv safe or approved inks and they are better. Also perhaps mix your color in the uv resin. Then use the colored UV resin to color your batch you will use.
Thanks for sharing so much information about this - I have had trouble with curing uv resin, and have been putting items in the sun when I can; however the last few days have been cloudy here and my uv resin wasn't curing - I am not a science person so your penguin explanation helped. I have given the process of putting my pieces in water and so amazed by this process. Someone in one of the groups I am a part of mentioned about the water and it struck me as very odd - not anymore. Today is another cloudy day here but I can move ahead with my uv resin and know that it won't be sticky when I am done with the whole water curing process.
thank you very much for the information, I will definitely try the water hack, because as you said Alcohol was terrible with my projects to remove the stickiness, thanks again. 👍👍
Thank you so much for this video. I was having the same problem with my UV resin. It was always sticky and not clear. I tried the cup cover method and it has worked a treat, no stickiness and crystal clear. I have wasted so much resin trying to get it right. Subscribed.
Genius tips! I love the penguin analogy 😄. Makes perfect sense. I also love the idea of hiding failed pieces in to larger projects. I will never throw another one in the trash. Seems like a pretty obvious tip NOW! lol. Love your videos and appreciate all the work you put into them.
This video was a huge help! These little tricks of yours with the cup and the UV and the water trick helped me with my sticky resin problems! I plan on using these in the future to keep my resin from getting sticky to begin with!
Man, thanks so much for the penguins! 😆 And for the water trick! Really appreciate you sharing the tips. I just came across your channel today, but you have a new subscriber! I love your work! ❤️
Excellent information, thank you. Side note, I keep all my bits and pieces of resin I clean off tools ,molds, mats in a large container, to be used in future opaque projects.
OH MY GOSH! Thank you! Thank you! I’ve had so many issues with UV resin that I just don’t even want to use it anymore. (Which is a shame since it’s so much faster for smaller projects)
Great tutorial!😍 My biggest problem has been using to much pigment. I'm always thinking, a little more won't hurt 😂. Another tip, you can't use colored molds.
Daniel…..what! This was awesome! I wonder if my old sticky pieces can be water cured? I almost gave up I’ve resin work. You are an art angel. Thank you!
Thank you, Daniel! I made some little purple and red dinosaurs in a baker’s pink silicone mold, using epoxy resin. I wanted to dome the backs so I used UV resin, but they were sticky. I kept putting them back under the light until they finally hardened up. Then I wanted to coat the tops because the pink mold left a matte finish. But the glitter I had loaded them with also inhibited the curing. Now I understand why.
That water tip is so helpful. I lately have had a problem with sticky sides. Im thinking that using water will help. Thanks for all of your help, Daniel.
Am new to UV resin. Tried a sample run putting lots of glitter with the resin and let it cure under the light. Of course it came out sticky. Tried a few more times under the light. Finally I decided to put a plain coat of UV resin over the top and voila. It hardened! Don't know if this was just a stroke of good luck or...? Thank you for your tip and great explanation. It's most appreciated.
I noticed black mica will have a hard time curing if you put in too much. The black absorbs the light and the mica reflects it. The first coaster I made was pretty and I thought it was cured, but woke up with a sticky mess.
I'm so sorry for using penguins as an analogy 😂🤣
That's a perfect explanation.
@cathyomalley2772 thanks Cathy 😊
😂 It worked for me.
Don't apologise! It helps people to visualise 'penguins! Brilliant video! Thank you!

WHOA! That water tip is GOLD!!! Thanks for this video Daniel!
The penguin analogy helped me understand! The info in this video was very helpful.
Your knowledge and generosity is so appreciated by me! Thank you many times over.
Thanks so much. I put mine in water, but didnt know to hit it with light again 😂.

Thanks so much! 😊
The water trick really does work well 😊
It's a life saver 😊😊😊😊
Awesome video and explanation. Thanks ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
You are so welcome! 😊 Thank you 😊
There are certain molds that I fill half way and cure it under the u v light then add more resin and this helps a lot.
I bought a 40watt energy-saving lamp UV lamp for just under 9 € works wonderfully
Awesome 😊

Me neither 😂🤣
Thanks for this video! I have been so put off by UV resin because it's always sticky. Thanks to you, I guess I will try again!

The fan will just be blowing the fumes around without any ventilation. I would highly recommend a mask yes 😊 Even without the fan on 😊
Fantastic - thanks so much for the water tip - just done it to 3 pieces that were slightly sticky, and da-da, they aren't any more! Brilliant.

I meant the comment about penguins as, if you didn’t like them you wouldn’t have used them as an example, I would have too as I love them!
That was awesome. Very clear explanation.

Daniel! I just figured out WHY curing through water works!! The water acts as an oxygen inhibitor! 😲👍😁. WOOHOO!
Er...I guess you said that later!
