  • Today we take a peek at the darkened underworld of the Mafia, and one if it's more outrageous associates.
    "Sam "Mad Sam" DeStefano (September 13, 1909 − April 14, 1973) was an Italian-American gangster who became one of the Chicago Outfit's most notorious loan sharks and sociopathic killers. Chicago-based Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, such as William F. Roemer, Jr., considered DeStefano to be the worst torture-murderer in the history of the United States. The Outfit used the mentally unstable and sadistic DeStefano for the torture-murders of Leo Foreman and Arthur Adler, the murder of DeStefano's younger brother, Michael DeStefano, Outfit enforcer and many others. However, due to DeStefano's deranged mental state, the Outfit never let him become a made man. At least one Outfit insider, Charles Crimaldi, claimed DeStefano was a Devil worshipper."

    You forgot that story about how one of his men ran off with $25,000 from a loan shark victim. Sam found him, tied him to a radiator and tortured him for three days behind a restaurant, then forced the guy's family to piss on his charred, half-dead body during a banquet in said restaurant.

    During another court date in Rockford, when he was serving as his own lawyer as was his practice, he confused everyone in the courtroom when he approached the jury and asked, "Have you ever seen an elephant?" Moments later, DeStefano suddenly changed his plea to guilty, telling the jury, "something had come to light that I had not known before." The jury found him guilty and fined him $100 for disorderly conduct.

    3 years ago this video was released, and i've watched it numerous times. I would really appreciate it if you covered more "Mafia" stories or "Chicago Mafia" stories, the topic isn't exactly taught in schools even in the U.S. so anyone who wants to learn about the crime ridden organized crime syndicates of the 20th century have to do boring deep dives. Meanwhile you sum up these events into a easy to follow and easy to enjoy (sometimes) comedic informative videos. Thank you.

    • @ferretyluv
      @ferretyluv 8 місяців тому +6

      Whenever you say “not taught in schools,” first ask yourself “why?” Why would we teach schoolchildren about horrible criminals and their escapades that didn’t really contribute greatly to American history? In high school, you may cover the mafia during prohibition, but in any other context, it would make the subject into either A. An underdog who the students think is cool and want to emulate it (not good) or B. a splatterfest that would upset the parents. We already have a packed curriculum that barely touches on the important stuff. We definitely don’t have time to talk about the mafia.
      Not everything historical has to be taught in school. This is a subject to research on your own. School teaches you the bare basics of history to give you a guideline on it. It can’t teach you everything. The hope is that it instills curiosity enough for you to want to check your library for more information about it. Or if it’s a topic you want to go more in depth on, use it as the subject of a history report for class. That’s why school gives you those assignments: to let you explore something that hasn’t necessarily been spoon fed to you from the curriculum using the research methods you’ve been taught. So before you ask “why hasn’t this been taught to us in school?” Ask “why didn’t I go look this stuff up before?”

(also theres not really anyone to take revenge on by killing the family since the great uncle may or may not be dead) Second of all: I do kind of agree on this one, but its still a very small affiliation to have operated on a mafia boss once. Tony The Ant Spilotro was also the basis for Joe Pesci's psychotic character Nicky Santoro in Casino, and also met a similar fate in real life and the film, being too fucked up for the mob. Anyone who's seen the film will remember the torture scene, which IIRC almost got it an NC-17 rating before it was edited, and famously mentions "we even put icepicks in his balls".

    You should make more videos. They're my favorite. You and another Irishmen are my favorite UA-camr's. The other guys are a bit more serious, but yours are the hilarious ones and I love your animations. Honestly you could put out videos 24/7 and still wouldn't be enuf. I know it's a lot of work with animation and all but they really are awesome. But your narration is the best part. You could even do a few non-animated vids in between animated ones. Might make it a little easier to do a few extras. Sorry if I'm asking too much I just enjoy your vids. Thanks for your hard work you're awesome.

    Tony Spilotro served as the basis for the character Nicky Santoro in Casino (played by Joe Pesci).

  • @hatuletoh
    @hatuletoh 3 роки тому +1

    My father met Tony Spilatro in the early--not long before he and his brother were killed and buried in a Kansas cornfield--in the 80s in Las Vegas. It was only a brief meeting, a handshake and quick introduction, but my father said he was terrified just being in the guy's presence. Spilatro was the guy the character of Nicky, Joe Pesci's character in "Casino", was based on. Robert DiNiro's character "Ace Rothstein" was based on a guy named "Lefty" Rosenthal, whom my father actually did business with on a couple of occasions, as he--my dad--was a banker, and in the 1980s Las Vegas, that meant you did business with casinos almost exclusively, which meant you did legitimate business with people who were various obviously mob-connected. But my father had no problem with Rosenthal or anyone else, because, according to my father, other than the occasional encounter with a psycho like Spilatro, it was just business, and everyone knew he was a straight businessman and had to be dealt with accordingly. And all a straight businessman had to do was stay straight, come through with what you say you're going to do, and be ready to talk to the FBI on a regular basis, which my father also did. And the IRS--they audited my parents regularly when we lived in Las Vegas.
