I need to make a few corrections to this video. I'm from Finland. He didn't eat all of the pills at once. He swallowed a bunch of them because they were chased by the Russians and they were in hurry. It's not said how many he ate at first, but obviously more than he should have, lol. He also ate the pills later on. It's mentioned that when he had passed the Russian camp and Russians were chasing him again, he at that point also ate those pills to be able to get rid of the chasers. He was part of the Finnish special forces, a commando. They were basically Finlands most elite soldiers who did the most demanding tasks. Maybe that's why he was capable to ski like a madman and maybe those pills had some part as well ;) hahaha. These things happened in March 1944 in between Kantalahti and Salla. The temperatures were in between -15 to -30 Celcius.
A few notes to keep in mind, about him being the Finland version of a green beret, a special forces soldier of an army that with around 15.000 soldiers held off the soviet advance of 450.000 for over a year, (until they declared the soviets winners but with a lot more breathing room than initially demanded by the soviets, as they had a puppet leader in finland). So you can imagine how freaking good a special forces soldier from such an army is, keeping in mind that the skills they handled best were survival and recconoisance. An absolute mad lad.

The most shocking thing about all this, is that he managed to live to the age of 71. I can only imagine how many times he has told this story to people who didn't believe him.
Late comment, but he actually didn't tell the story much according to his friends and family because he wasn't sure how much of what he remembered was even real. His complete account comes mostly from a article he finally wrote for a Finnish magazine's war story competition. His story won the SECOND prize.
Pervitin (and other meth products) were not just given to soldiers. You could actually buy it from your local pharmacy, even after the war. It was not declared an illegal drug until 1968 in Finland. There are stories of old people asking for amphetamine in pharmacies all the way up until the 80s or so because they remembered how you could work all day and all night with it.
That's amazing. I looked up pervitin and they still produce it under the name Desoxyn. It's pure methamphetamine...Pure! Lmaooo. Boy they were getting a clean high! I don't even do meth but I do take amphetamines for ADHD.
Pervitin staid in the pharmacy for a long time but its content was changed many times. If I recall it right, the last years it was available, there was no drugs in it, mostly cofeine.

@Deadpoppin Maybe Koskiniemi meant taking a whole tube at once? More moderate dosing was probably pretty common. I have a theory that overuse of stimulants during the war lead to addictions, especially among doctors (only anecdotal, I doubt anyone's ever made a study of this). This then lead to an extremely restrictive policy wrt medicines of this type (most things effectively banned since the early sixties). Which is barely getting better now, nearly 60 years later.

@@glytchd Believe it or not the brain not shutting off is down to melatonin not being produced. I have peer reviewed medical journal articles for this. It is something incredibly easy to solve too. All plants produce melatonin (as do all animals) and tart cherries produce way more than most. Organic tart cherry juice seems to work for most with this specific issue as it contains plenty of melatonin. Bitter cakes (made with hops) also work but taste bloody aweful and the hops being a natural weakish antibiotic will screw up your digestive system.
@tehSecretCowLevel Not sure how well documented it is but northern vietnam were exporting yellow heroine they were producing in exchange for arms, and american soldiers stationed at occupied heroine farms would often become addicted. It is suspected that the main cause for such a high volume of american soldiers experimenting with heroine in Vietnam was the traumatic setting they were stationed in.
@@Aegis--- it's just so sad because if you asked any of them they'd say that they never would've touched it I'd they knew what it would do to them. They all hate themselves for it. Just a waste of human life.
@@yommmrr Heorin. It's heroin. Heroin is 1000000000000000000% worse than meth because it causes a PHYSICAL addiction in the body, whereas meth addiction does not. Meth doesn't give withdraws - a meth user can stop using meth ANY time and all that will happen is they will sleep a lot because the body's repairing itself, and eating a lot to catch up for all the food not eaten while on meth... it's a mental addiction, the person enjoys it a lot so they are hooked. With heroin, however, you get horrible withdraws that stop you from getting clean even if you desperately want to. I was a heroin addict for 6 years and HATED the drug for most that time but couldn't get off it because of how horrifying the withdraws are. Been in and out of rehabs during that time, seen thousands of meth addicts and thousands of heroin addicts, i know the difference.

As a Finnish person I've heard about this guy but tbh I never thought this story was so funny. Like for an example how did this guy make so many fires during his great adventure :D
Imagine you're a random Russian soldier chilling at camp and suddenly a methed up Finn skis through your camp full speed shouting "PERKELE PERKELE PERKELE PERKELE"
My man stepped into bobby traps twice, only got a few scratches and one innecesary finger less, survived starvation and pervitin and got rescued. That must have been a great granpda story.
The Vietnam War...There was drugs everywhere and soldiers were getting high on everything. They came home from that war addicted to heroin and opiates.
If I had a Russian platoon chasing me through the snow trying to kill me I can see how taking the whole bottle of meth might seem a viable option, if one pill makes me faster what will 30 do?
The whole story is crazy but the thing that blew my mind is his heart rate of 200bpm when he was rescued. That’s absolutely insane. Mine was 140 after a night of tequila and marijuana and I felt like I was about to die. 200 is stupid high.
No, he wandered to the wrong direction. Would you have a guy fucked up on a shitload of meth with a loaded weapon next to you? They made a smart choice, and Aimo just went into a wrong direction. Finns didn't leave others behind. "Kaveria ei jätetä".
I've read stories of this soldier for years, but never heard the harrowing bits of his foot being mangled, etc. You certainly put the fringe around the edges.
I think I should testimony to the resilientness of the human mind. When boiled down to its survival instincts.... The human will try to survive under any circumstance.
Probably the training is second nature. Military survival training they probably had, plus just being a Finn they had experience dealing with cold. He didn't remember being conscious at times but that doesn't mean he wasn't "conscious" as far as being able to function.

Honestly, if they're 80+, and former soldiers, they've earned the right to go out high as a kite.
Caffeine is only technically a stimulant. It has no Stimulating effects on me. It does help medicines work though for headaches
