Lots of issues surrounding the badge failing to come up/getting stuck so the camera is always revealed after a few years. It’s a common fault in the VW group cars that hide the cameras
@@Danny-gb2kj Strange, I've never had any issues with the reversing cameras. Then again, I've never had half the issues people say VW's have or "always suffer with" and I've owned a lot, modern and old ☺️
I'd like to see a review of the MG4. Also, you should start mentioning the battery chemistry, as that is fast becoming the most interesting aspect of EV's, as it effects energy density, charging speed, range, the environment and overall performance - to name a few. Battery tech is comparable to engine type in an ICE car. If an ICE car were a diesel, for example, I'm sure you'd mention it, no?
Complaining about the lack of a frunk/froot is a bit silly considering how snub-nosed the ID cars are. Rather than having a massive half-empty engine bay (and filling it with a tiny storage area not useful for more than cables) they made the front as short as possible, thus freeing up much more interior space. THIS is how EVs should be designed, they don't need ICE-sized fronts.
Hey Matt, could you review the MG ZS EV Trophy Long Range? It's one of the most popular cars and is being sold fast right now. It's one of those that's actually 'available to buy' with wait times under 4 months rather than waiting 12+ months for the newer more expensive EVs. I hope you can pick this one up. It's always amazing to see your 'practical reviews'. Cheers! ☺️
I agree - it would be good to see what Matt had to say about the MG ZS EV. I'm personally interested in the LR Trophy Connect but that one model is no longer available 😏

You know what's depressive? When you drive a 15 year old Golf 5 to a VW dealership, and sit inside a brand new VW, and realize it feels about half the quality of the old Golf. Literally, materials, build quality, feeling of solidity, design, attention to detail, everything used to be so much better.
Driving a 2003 a3 s-line full package right now. The leather and all other interior materials are so much better than todays. Got 214000km on the clock and the steering wheel looks like its freshly built in. You cant make this up.
Nice review! This interior isn't enough for this price range. It's ok in the ID.3 but not inte the ID4/5. Another thing is the blue color, makes it disappear. I would go for the Kings red (that I have on my id.3) or for the dark grey (don't remember the name of it).
I own an ID4 and I think the interior is acceptable for the price. Its slightly better than the Tiguan inside. It does irritate me though how people give the ID range a hard time with their interiors when in reality they are lovely cabins in the real world.
This is the epitome of why all VW ID products currently available to buy are cack; the drivetrain’s bang average, it’s cheaply built and ludicrously expensive in comparison with much better rivals. I’m hopeful the ID Buzz will sort out these problems but for now you will not see me anywhere near a VW dealership.
The drivetrain from MEB cars is actually really good. Very efficient and almost no higher consumption with an AWD version. Also all reviews I saw say that the power delivery is on point
@@ciybersal9833 Of course, it's built in China by MG, owned by the Chinese state. Labour is cheap there because workers have few rights. They work long hours. Working for a tier 1 supplier for VW, I can tell you, things like the "rear" window switches are probably not "ideas", well they are, but from the financial department (bill of materials), but the reasoning behind them is to save 0.01$. Now you have 3 buttons, instead of 4 and it's harder to replace ( unique part) :) Not so bad, right, well not great when we get into electrical components.
@@derbigpr500 You're so far off the pulse there - Tesla Model 3's and Y's that come out of China & Berlin are far higher quality than what's previously come out of the US. Tesla has had bad press due to years of US made shonky built Model S, X's and early Y's. You sit in a new model 3 and its light years ahead of anything VW have recently produced in terms of quality (perceived or otherwise)....I know as i have just picked up a new model 3 and having sat in and test drove an ID3 and ID4 beforehand - they are awful, rattly cheap boxes in comparison with outdated cumbersome interfaces & mediocre small displays with limited functionality. Material quality is far higher in the M3, the whole VW ID3/4 cabin's just feel and look so plasticy. You really need to test drive a new one to judge, Tesla & VW - the difference in quality is very stark nowadays....it was not always this way, Tesla have had terrible QC issues in the past and VW used to be a lot better but they have really cut costs on materials everywhere. Things are not what they once were, Tesla moved forward, VW moved backwards.
Can't see how this is a match to the Ioniq 5 and the EV6 in any department, especially at this price point. Not to mention that only the top of the line versions of recent VW models were spared from their preposterous cost cutting.
As a passenger in one of these thanks to a family member its selling point for me was that glass roof and the leg room you can sit back and watch the sky in comfort.
Coincidentally, almost exactly TWICE the price of the new MG4EV, which has the same range, same motor power, and is a second faster 0-60. The MG4 also has a tiiiny instrument binnacle, but for half the price you just don't mind as much. Yes, the MG4 is smaller, and essentially made in China, but VW's styling department has really lost their way, and their design/engineering innovation from the past has gone missing. It might as well have been made in the far east too. VW must be absolutely raking in the profits from their EVs and the brand snobs who simply must have a VW.
Ferdinand Piech era is long gone. There were ambitious, quirky with very original design engines and innovation. Cars were not very reliable may be, bu have character and sense of quality. Now they essentially became german version of mid 2000's Toyota.
MG4 is tiny compared to this imo (hatchback vs SUV). Better to compare it to the ZS EV if you're staying in the MG range? The MG brand is definitely something I'd consider in the future, it depends how dealer support is in Europe.
Well it's a no thanks from me. I deeply despise the touch crap on the steering wheel and dash, and all new VW models suck because of it. I'll just keep my mk 7.5 GTI for a few more years :-)
I really don‘t see the problem with touching buttons on the steering wheel. You can swipe or press. Never happend any „mistake“ to me. With quality i agree with you, they could have done it better. Still i love my id4 gtx, arguably is quicker then 8 gti up to 170 kmph.
The craziest thing about these cars is the fact that they don’t have a start button! Just get in and select Drive and it goes! Blew my mind when I first drove the iD.4 😂
Rear window buttons - whilst not great there is a short cut to raise and lower all windows. Hold the rear haptic button until it flashes and then using the button to raise or lower all windows. This short cut works in the Cupra Born (which is under the skin an ID3 and has the same window controls).
Agree on the verdict. The frunk/froot is not there to give more space in the cabin. I actually agree on doing this. Most people don’t need their chargers available all the time.
I would say those door handles would be among the 5 things I hated about the ID4 - the button response is temperamental which drives you round the twist after a very short time. I rented an ID4 for a weekend about a month ago to drive my son to University. My son got so frustrated with it I thought he was going to try to rip the door off of it's hinges at one point (and we only rented the car for 3 days). The design of the interior door handles is also flawed. Somehow 3 of us managed to get the skin on our hands pinched by them on a few occasions while opening the doors. If it was just one of us, I wouldn't have thought anything about it, but 3 different people with 3 different hand sizes, screams that something isn't right. Otherwise, agree on the other points in the 5 things to hate - the touch sensitive buttons all over the place were a general annoyance, and borderline dangerous on the steering wheel. All in all, a bit of a shame really as it spoils an otherwise good car. I came away with a list of 6 or 7 regular irritations from the weekend (all of which seem to still be in place for the ID5) and went and tried the Skoda Enyaq 80x. Not one of the irritations could be found in the skoda - (mechanical operation door handles on the outside, physical buttons on the steering wheel etc.) - so I subsequently ordered one 🙂
I know EV’s are getting better and better with quality and range but I do feel as though VW are getting a raw deal with all the negativity towards the ID range. Most buyers have families and aren’t spending time scratching the interiors of their cars!! Those “scratchy plastics” are hardwearing and if you have small kids - or grandkids, they’re actually really easy to wipe down and keep clean.
Just read an article saying VW group cars top the list for random software / electronic glitches and lock ups. Software development obviously doesn’t come easy for them. Honestly, I’m stuck. I want a car like this. The Tesla Model Y is the best tech wise, but I find the ride really uncomfortable. I don’t think I can live with it. VW Group cars have serious software issues. Kia EV6 doesn’t feel right from the drivers seat. Toyota Brzx2y or whatever its called, doesn’t have a frunk nor a glovebox. More importantly its been subject to a massive recall and it feels like a rushed product. I just checked it out in the showroom, its really unappealing. No clever touches at all. If feels like they’ve gone, how can we get a car out in half the time? ARGH! Last hope is that the Nissan Ariya doesn’t have any deal breakers.
3 years on with my Tiguan and still several electronic glitches and of course they check it = nothing found every time…. I just would like my wipers not to work automatically when it’s sunny and not raining and stop only when they want to….
@carwow when doing brake tests, it really isn't helpful to see a shot of the interior of the car, or a shot of the front wheels of the car. Consumers want to see how the car handles hard braking. Does it have nose dive, does it skid and turn, does it plant itself well when braking hard. Would be much more useful to see an exterior shot of the entire car from the front /rear/side from the time brakes are applied to when it comes to a stop.
This is true and was always true...my Passat GTE has List price of 70k and I bought it for 35k with 13k km only...50% loss in 1.5 years. BUT since the demand for EVs is so high and still the production is low, the price will be more stable the next years.
@@josefv-y8m yes you're right. Second hand car prices are very high at the moment. You can't get a second hand ID4 so they will change hands in the dealerships without any advertising required at a high price. I got offer 28k for my 3 year old A1 the other day by the dealership. I bought it for 32k. I'm looking to buy a Q4 and I'd take a second one near list if I could get one but I can't.

Disappointed with the review I’m sorry to say but happy there is a review on the VW ID5. So thx for that.
The window switch design I think it genius. I’m always rolling up the wrong windows when I want to put the front ones up. If there is a toggle switch next to the two main switches, I can see that being easier to use.
Yeah VW have lost the plot. The diesel scandal has hit them hard. That said can we have some more diesel car reviews as believe it or not they are still relevant. Instead of non stop overpriced electric SUV’s
The German car makers really seem to be battling with costs 1) VWs used to be the most premium feeling mainstream carmaker now car makers like Kia and the Chinese brands do it better 2) The fact that the glove box fuse box hasn't been moved is such a cheap move which Peugeot used to do. Now Peugeot actually moves it and lines the glove box in material which VW no longer does 3) The screen behind the steering wheel is way too small and even the main screen graphics look poor with very basic looking outdated feeling software What is going on in Germany?
The „I’ve lost my keys“ part of the door pocket is actually for the rolled up yellow reflective safety vest which has to be carried in every car in case of breakdown.
Give it up with the touch sensitive steering wheel Matt. If you actually use it regularly, then it soon becomes a non-issue. Other than that, keep up the good work :D Oh also my 245PS Tiguan allspace is 0-60 in 6.2 seconds (by the book). I've not tested that myself yet though
Hi Matt, John from Melbourne Australia. Luv ur videos. As we are shortly getting some VAG EVs, can you compare the VW ID5 GTX against the Skoda Enyaq RS. Enyaq seems to look better to me.
8:20 i thought the window idea is really clever because my mum when opening her window while driving, she always manages to open the rear window instead so the switch always being the front windows I thought would be pretty neat for her. But honestly it's probably VW cheaping out because they don't want to spend more money on more switches.
I don’t like the design and I agree with Matt but I dunno saving one button saves much in cost? I mean if they really wanna save, they could go the Tesla route and go with minimal design and eliminate most buttons.
What annoys me with most electric cars is that as an owner of a large dog, he won't fit correctly in the boot of anyone in a decent pricerange with the exception of the MG5 that is on an old platform that is not optimized for electric... I guess I will have to wait for the ID Buzz and that one is also expensive

I will use the 60K to get the top of the range Ioniq 5 and still have change. I really love my Ioniq 5.
I do like this, but even though I am a VW fan and have owned a lot of them 😁 this car comes across cheap and certainly not worth the £60K price tag 😱 And the reversing camera has been hidden under VW badges for years. Both my Arteon and my wife's Golf have this. So why change it!
Love the Arteon, how would you rate it?
Lots of issues surrounding the badge failing to come up/getting stuck so the camera is always revealed after a few years. It’s a common fault in the VW group cars that hide the cameras
@@samirav1137 Very highly 😁
@@Danny-gb2kj But it's also a cost saving option. Plus it protects the camera from dust and little stones...
I bought an Ioniq 5 awd ultimate for 9k less, having driven this, it was a wise choice
Congratulations on buying the ugliest car of the 2020s so far

You know what's depressive? When you drive a 15 year old Golf 5 to a VW dealership, and sit inside a brand new VW, and realize it feels about half the quality of the old Golf. Literally, materials, build quality, feeling of solidity, design, attention to detail, everything used to be so much better.
Not just VW, not just cars. Everything nowadays is built to the lowest possible cost, no matter how much they charge for it.
Try the Skoda, same car with more traditional interiors.
Ahh no.
@@pato10111 i own the id3 and have tested both id4 and id5, the interior is not lovely, it's not bad but not ok either.

MG4 looks like a bargain next to this...
The drivetrain from MEB cars is actually really good. Very efficient and almost no higher consumption with an AWD version. Also all reviews I saw say that the power delivery is on point

Working for a tier 1 supplier for VW, I can tell you, things like the "rear" window switches are probably not "ideas", well they are, but from the financial department (bill of materials), but the reasoning behind them is to save 0.01$. Now you have 3 buttons, instead of 4 and it's harder to replace ( unique part) :)

60000 for a Tesla is even more insane. VW is a way higher quality brand than Tesla.
@@blower1 I disagree. Tesla has the worst quality interiors in the entire EV world

5:17 i like how the sunroof has been tested with a solid whack of head.. Good Job !!
Please check if the window glass slide down fully or not
Well it's a no thanks from me. I deeply despise the touch crap on the steering wheel and dash, and all new VW models suck because of it. I'll just keep my mk 7.5 GTI for a few more years :-)

Rear window buttons - whilst not great there is a short cut to raise and lower all windows. Hold the rear haptic button until it flashes and then using the button to raise or lower all windows. This short cut works in the Cupra Born (which is under the skin an ID3 and has the same window controls).
I loved most of it, but it seems way to heavy in the handling for such a small interior.
And also only had 126bhp at best.
Interior is huge for this price bracket.
If you hold down the rear button for the windows until it flashing, all windows will go up and down btw.
Its not so dumb when u know how to use it 😅
to me the ID Buzz is the best looking EV of the VW brand
Yep. Me too love that ID BUZZ and ID.R.
That's why they take 20.000€ extra from you to get it.
Agree on the verdict. The frunk/froot is not there to give more space in the cabin. I actually agree on doing this. Most people don’t need their chargers available all the time.
Like the full length light bar, interior kool😏
Interior is more like the same to 300SL.
The've took the Enyaq VRS coupe chassis and made the ID.5 rather than renaming the ID.4 to ID.4 Coupe. What a game!
I have no idea what you are talking about with the handles..inside or out there's nothing wrong with them.
@@deadfool3344 Yeah, some picky guy/family it seems who wanted to find excuses to complain about anything.
I miss the backlight in the volume and heat buttons / sliding, in my Golf Ehybrid, but you get use to it

The design of the door handle - weren’t cars in the 70’s and 80’s like that, too?
I just would like my wipers not to work automatically when it’s sunny and not raining and stop only when they want to….
matt!! could you share your workout routine?
@carwow when doing brake tests, it really isn't helpful to see a shot of the interior of the car, or a shot of the front wheels of the car. Consumers want to see how the car handles hard braking. Does it have nose dive, does it skid and turn, does it plant itself well when braking hard. Would be much more useful to see an exterior shot of the entire car from the front /rear/side from the time brakes are applied to when it comes to a stop.
When will this get to Kenya? I'll check out this review then

Mat Watson! Are you going to the Paris auto show on the 17th?
The German car makers really seem to be battling with costs
1) VWs used to be the most premium feeling mainstream carmaker now car makers like Kia and the Chinese brands do it better
2) The fact that the glove box fuse box hasn't been moved is such a cheap move which Peugeot used to do. Now Peugeot actually moves it and lines the glove box in material which VW no longer does
3) The screen behind the steering wheel is way too small and even the main screen graphics look poor with very basic looking outdated feeling software
What is going on in Germany?

Does designer / company high or what?
What's the difference with other lineups' designs?

Exactly this. It is an excuse not to spend another 20p and do some proper design work.
