Lyrics:
Angels on the sideline
Puzzled and amused
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused
Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly old monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it
Right in two
Angels on the sideline
Baffled and confused
Father blessed them all with reason
And this is what they choose
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys give them thumbs
They forge a blade, and where there's one they're bound to divide it
Right in two
Right in two
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys give them thumbs, they make a club
And beat their brother down
How they survive so misguided is a mystery
Repugnant is a Creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Fight over the clouds, over wind, over sky and
Fight over life, over blood, over air and light
Over love, over sun, over another
Fight for the time, for the one, for the rise and
Angels on the sideline again
Been so long with patience and reason
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Right in two
Right in two
This was my mom's favorite song. When she was in the hospital, unable to talk or really communicate, I put this song on for her and she squeezed my hand SO TIGHTLY and I watched as tears fell out of the corners of her eyes. This song will forever remind me of my mother, and that moment.

this was gods will humans dont need free will at all!
I'd like to believe Maynard would respect my reply here. Man was God's slaves, we freed ourselves from his chains only to allow man to create another god to bow before "Government". We are only free when we let go of all the chains and imaginary boundaries we create

"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here."
The greatest lyric ever composed for sure, not only is it beautifully and uniquely worded, but this lyric works from both a religious and non-religious perspective. A religious person may say how could you ignore the majesty of god and heaven and all its eternity for your short life on earth. Whereas a non-religious person could see this as, why would you waste your gaze to the stars as a search for non existent paradise instead of awing in the wonder of the universe.
Can somebody elaborate on these lines? Finding it hard to understand the meaning.
@@KAK4TACO It basically means that we should embrace this one blessed chance to be alive and not spend our limited time here causing harm, negativity and destruction and learn to love everyone despite our differences and beliefs because at the end of the day, we are all here for a blink of an eye. Might aswell make the most out of it
@@KAK4TACO What makes this sentence so good is that 'squander" can both mean "to waste an opportunity", as in, not use the chance to do something, but it can also mean "to over-use something and achieve little or no results".
Now, as Grandjapon said, from a religious perspective, the meaning is this: "It is wrong not to look at the sky and and to ignore at the eternal glory of God, if you know that you're just a mortal"
But from an atheist perspective it's this: "It is wrong to waste your time looking at the sky in search of a God if you know that you're just a mortal".
Does that clear it up?
@@KAK4TACO It means we are constantly spinning and weaving round each new experience
. We must recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.

You’re absolutely welcome.
Try some Biggie smalls, type O Negative, maybe a little Ministry.
Musically it starts off soft, quiet and beautiful. Eventually goes into brutally flawless. Seamlessly.
It starts off slow and simple, then it goes hard, and ends soft and simple. It's just what evil does. It starts off I'm infancy, and eventually destroys itself bringing it back to serenity. Songs that point this out are heaven and hell and I can ride my bike with no handlebars.
Key word of survival- brutal...tradegy, elation, pain, numbness..
You could say it's cut right in two
Only Tool is mastering this

Very elegant
NEVER say NEVER: Despite this is one of my favourite songs, take The Rolling Stones with "Gimme Shelter" or Rammstein with "Mother".
I just realized today that this song is about Solomon's trial, in which two women both claimed to be the mother of the same child. Solomon threatened to cut the child in half and give each woman one half. The women's (or rather, one of the women's) sin was thinking it was all about themselves, rather than seeing themselves as part of a greater whole. The true mother understood this intuitively, and gave up the child so that the child could at least live (Solomon then gave the child to the real mother).
But the two women are just a metaphor. The whole world is clamoring for ownership over a planet that fundamentally isn't theirs, thinking it's all about themselves. It's petty and pathetic, and so, to give perspective, Maynard borrows from Solomon and suggests: "cut it all right in two."
I also think its about the duality of man in general, inspired by that. If you watch the video. It's everything

10,000 days was a massively underrated album. I put it right up there with Lateralus as co-favorite Tool albums.
nah it wasn't underrated, any smart tool fan will tell you that each album was better than the previous, so fear inoculum should be better than 10,000 days
CageFightingNuns Underated by whom? Not Tool fans, surely. Perhaps fans of Michael Bolton or...Stryper.
So I guess I'm agreeing in a roundabout way, an incredible album that has helped me get through the past 13 years.
I always think of them as two sides of the same coin. Lateralus is a celebration of the elation that comes with one transcending the limitations of human society. 10,000 Days is the somber acceptance that comes when one realizing that one must still coexist with said society until it can catch up to you.
IT was underrated because some people felt it was as solid as the previous 3 records.
heres my ranking of their albums
1. Aneima
2.Undertow
3.Fear Innoculum
4.10,000 Days
5. Opiate
6.Lateralus
If Maynards mother hadn't passed he would be a different man with different perspectives of how to write music, this is what i consider perfection
Tool taught me what true good music sounds like. You guys have got to be the most intelligent musicians in the world. Your music has given me a broader perspective of reality. It has lead me in a better direction in life and I feel as if it could do the same for many others.

If anyone is interested, TOOL tunes their guitar and bass to a frequency of 444hz not 440. If they can’t get the sound just right
Thank you!
I was expecting this to be one of those dreamy, pretentiously spiritual comments about 432Hz resonating with their G-spot or something.
@@darkySp wasn't it just a competing standard. After all, you need two instruments to be in tune with each other.
@@BayandurPogosyan It was, some classical composers tuned to A=432Hz, but now there are uploads of songs that are edited to the pitch of 432Hz and people get the placebo effect, thinking that the 432Hz version sounds better or some go the extra mile and straight up believe that they feel more relaxed or focused when listening to the 432Hz version.
There's some very limited evidence and theories that suggest that 432Hz is the most resonant frequency with the Universe or something like that. It's all a hoax and a placebo, basically.
While A=432Hz does have an effect and it does bring a more mellow quality as opposed to A=440Hz, the instruments themselves must be tuned to A=432Hz, which is not the same as changing the pitch from A=440Hz to A=432Hz in software. Same principle as slowing down a song in software and playing it at a slower tempo.
@@darkySp all evidence I've seen is that frequency resonance is more dependent on the acoustics than anything else. Just play different pitches at a high enough volume in different rooms, and you'll see what I mean.
The rest of it, yeah, it does affect the character of the sound in a small way, but it also might make it sound a bit out of tune.
Also, you're right, most people do not understand musical instruments don't produce a fixed-frequency sound wave you can just manipulate, there's a lot of overtones and other stuff that goes into the body of the sound, and just changing the frequency does not recompose the body, it just shifts it.
I think the most intense experience of my life was listening to this song.
First time doing acid around 2 hours into the trip I put this song on the tv with the album cover full screen. I accidentally put it on repeat (best decision ever made) and sat listening to it for an hour watching the pattern on the face shift and change, I quite literally felt my body ascend.
This song had forever been changed for me, such a masterpiece
Hell yeah same for me all of tool did. it changed me for ever!I was at tool concert .I had some on a sugar cube.Best experience ever I will never forget it.
There aren't too many shortcuts in life that don't double back on yourself. But good psychedelics with great music opens new pathways in the mind. If you have guardians like mine, those pathways provide safety when trauma and Brother Death come looking for your soul.
@@That_Guy_Says_Hi couldn’t have said it better myself, music is one of the most beautiful things on this earth, pairing it with good psychedelics can make it truly an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life

This is by far Tool's most underrated song. Also 10,000 Days is Tool's best album in terms of lyrics
I can remember that feeling I got; the first time I heard Tool. Being 14. Walking through the living room with MTV on. Sober comes on…and I’m drawn towards the tv like a moth to a flame. Caught up in the sound; mesmerized by the video…Feeling something..different. Part of me thought it was Magical. And all of me realized it was just; Necessary. Needed in the world. Needed in my world. This song; gave me the same feeling the first time I heard it too. That’s all. ❤️ much love.
i got into tool back in ther 90's and the first song of theres heard was sober so mezmerizing that im still listening to them to this day, and until i die.
And then MTV followed up with the latest Dojacat video bringing everything crashing to earth.
This is currently my favorite TOOL song, what a masterpiece

The drum build up from 4:05 - 5:24 is absolutely insane! I remember hearing this song for the first time stoned & listening to drums while the entire song built! Right in Two Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Angels on the sideline
Puzzled and amused
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused
[Chorus 1]
Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it
Right in two
[Verse 2]
Angels on the sideline
Baffled and confused
Father blessed them all with reason
And this is what they choose?
(This is what they choose)
[Chorus 2]
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys, give them thumbs, they forge a blade
And where there's one they're bound to divide it
Right in two
Right in two
[Chorus 3]
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys, give them thumbs, they make a club and beat their brother down
How they've survived so misguided is a mystery
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here
[Bridge 1]
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
[Interlude]
[Bridge 2]
Fight over the clouds, over wind, over sky and
Fight over life, over blood, over air and light
Over love, over sun, over another
Fight for the time, for the one, for the rise and
[Verse 3]
Angels on the sideline again
Benched along with patience and reason
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering where this tug of war will end
[Outro]
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Right in two
Right in two
I would consider bridge 1 and the outro as the chorus and the rest are verses, but that's just how I hear it.

Opiate - The scared and confused angry child.
Undertow - The child has grown, and is still not happy. Facing and beginning to fight his problems.
Ænima - He's still fighting, figuring things out. Still in pain, but he can see the other side now.
Lateralus - He isn't quite at peace yet, but he's past the nitty gritty. He's growing and finding himself in the world and the cosmos.
Exploring his spirituality.
10,000 Days - He now thinks back, and watching the present day. He, once knowing the pain and struggle the people of earth face understands whats happening. He chastises, tutors and tries to guide people in the right way. Yes, this album is spiritual but, it is very earth focused. (Mostly). For to further your spiritual path, you must first understand your earthly self. Without a ground to stand on, you cannot fight like he has.
Fear Inoculum - He's begun to move past his pain now, and continues to guide those around him. He teaches the lessons and learns them along side us.
Tool is a personal journey to me, this is what I've gathered so far. (Or some of what I've gathered)
(I left out their tape before Opiate because it's basically Opiate with less quality. Still like it tho)
