Lyrics:
All righty then
Picture this if you will
10 to 2 am, X, yogi DMT, and a box of krispy kreme's in my "need to know" pose just outside of area 51, contemplating the whole chosen people thingy when just then a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my birkinstocks, and me yelping "holy fuckin' shit!"
Then the X file being, looking like some kinda blue green Jackie chan, with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of vanilla chig champa, did a slow mo matrix decent outta the butt end of the banana vessel, and hovered above my bug eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was, "I hope uncle martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fuckin pants!!"
So light in his way, like an apparition, he'd had me crying out...
"Fuck me!
It's gotta be
The dead head
Chemistry
The blotter got right on top o' me
Got me seeing E mutha fuckin T!"
And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose. He said. "you are the chosen one. The one who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and a warning for those who do not." Me! The chosen one. They chose me!!!! And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school!!
(You'd better listen)
Then he looked right through me with somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
See, my heart is pounding cuz this shit never happens to me.
Can't breathe right now.
It was so real
Like I woke up in Wonderland
All sorta terrifying
I don't wanna be all alone
While I tell this story
And can anyone tell me why y'all sound like peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?

That's because the veil is thinner for you, and tool stimulates that underlying spiritual knowledge we all have. You are more sensitive to the quantum fluctuations. Is just so good it's unbelievable, it's almost entirely out of place musically with how melodic it is, and yet not only do they fit it in, they then seamlessly revert back to the previous more gritty style, despite the extreme contrast of these styles it fits together so cohesively.
Then there's the lyrics. It captures so very well that state of being really high where every irrelevant thought is like an epiphany. It once occurred to me on drugs that I could solve world hunger using the moon, in that moment I was so sure that I had solved it. I HAD to tell someone about this so I approached a friend to tell him (literally 30 seconds later), and I had forgotten entirely what I wanted to tell him so urgently so instead, winging it, I told him about my plan to get a full time job as a clock. The thing I love about the lyrics is that they leave open the possibility that it wasn't a bad trip. How darkly funny that aliens might come with a message of hope and a dire warning to the people of this planet and happen to pick this one particular guy as their herald, not knowing that nobody would believe him because he's a junkie and strap him down to a hospital bed while their doom approaches.
I mean I can't even explain how much I love this song.
The passage from 8:38 to 9:16 is for me the best moment in a tool song and surely one of the best in rock music in general.
This is the apogee, the final climax where the message is revealed but the narrator "forgets his pen". I'm feeling like the entire song is preparing the listener to this special moment since the beginning, especially the instrumental part just before with the groovy bass part and the destroyed guitar solo which create a very serious atmosphere, the suspens is at its peak. Tool's musicians create deeper and deeper atmospheres and moods that fit with the narrator's story, the tension finally peaks with the last instrumental part. By that point, the listener is totally focused on what Maynard is gonna say, the Rosetta Stone and the fate of humanity will finally be soon revealed.
What follows after that is one of the most mind-blowing thing I've ever heard, sadenly the narrator forgot his pen when the message was delivered by UFOs...
"Shit the bed again... typical."
Well said, Maynard.
Just excuse my English guys but I just wanted to point out the musical genusiness and the song writings skills of these guys.
The first time I listened to that, I just cried at that moment because it made (and still makes) me feel something I can't really explain, a special feeling related to the pure beauty and the greatness of our humanity filled with a feeling of pure hopeness for it and our future.
I love Tool so much since so many years, their discography is flawless and legendary, 10000 days is for me a rock masterpiece that will never be matched in its kind.
@Dragon Of Dojima Same for me except when that song is playing lol. Check out vicarious and right in two if you have no hope.
@Dragon Of Dojima totally agreed but I try not caring lol

goosebump central. Probably the best build up in the entire Tool catalog.

My fav part of the whole song. Powerful
This........ Oh my god. This part hits so freaking hard!

Lyrics: 🤘
Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes,
in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy
when a flaming stealth banana split the sky
like one would hope but never really expect
to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime
and stopping right at my Birkenstocks,
and me yelping...
Holy fucking shit!
Then the X-Files being,
Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan
with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of
vanilla Chig Champa
Did a slow-mo Matrix descent
Outta the butt end of the banana vessel
And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw,
and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip,
and all I could think was:
"I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice
that I pissed my fuckin' pants."
So light in his way,
Like an apparition, that
He had me crying out,
"Fuck me
It's gotta be
the Deadhead Chemistry
The blotter got right on top of me
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"
And after calming me down
with some orange slices
and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One,
the One who will deliver the message.
A message of hope for those who choose to hear it
and a warning for those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.
You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better listen.
Then he looked right through me
With somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
See, my heart is pounding
'Cause this shit never happens to me
I can't breathe right now!
It was so real,
Like I woke up in Wonderland.
All sorta terrifying
I don't wanna be all alone
While I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why
Y'all sound like Peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real
Finally, it's my lucky day
See, my heart is racing
'Cause this shit never happens to me
I can't breathe right now!
You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I've just said!
See the Dead ain't touring
And this wasn't all in my head.
See, they took me by the hand
And invited me right in.
Then they showed me something
I don't even know where to begin.
Strapped down to my bed
Feet cold and eyes red
I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Can't remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed.

Im jealous of everyone discovering this magic for the first time. Id do anything to relive that moment.
YEEESSSSSS,ME TOOO :(
My first and probably my favourite tool song. I was 14 when I got shown this by one of my classmates and I remember being sorta uncertain about it but decided to download it anyway. The song sat on my phone for weeks before it ended up coming up on my shuffle playlist one time when I'd gone out for a walk. All I remember was sparking up a spliff as the lost keys/blame hoffman part was playing and sitting down not long after in order to better soak up the complexity of the song's progression. After getting back home, I spent the evening downloading every single tool song I could find. However, despite loving the band and their songs I have never been able to recapture the magic of just sitting down on a grassy bank and hearing rosetta stoned play for the first time, something which I would give anything to experience again.
My first time was my Indian metal buddy shared it to me one night and I can remember running round the house rocking out for a straight 6hours until the sun came up again all night long. So great 😁 would give anything to hear it like that again. Worth more than a lot of things I can say -been trying to get my local national radio station to play it at prime time if I can get in - to open many minds to its awesomeness one day
Have your first sub. Lol
Chase that dragon
For me, the song that blew my mind like that and got me into tool was invincible.
Good thing a stealth banana didn’t come down and split the sky
That bass and drum combo at 7:03 makes this song my favorite tool song of all time
Fuck ya
Just saw them on Tuesday night. Justin is an absolute animal, and they have never sounded better
Fuck yes. But the way it builds up from 6.00 onwards and then Adam comes screaming in while Justin and Danny keep it flowing is fucking smooth!
@connorshark sorry sir but you are indeed wrong. There are many different types of solos.
@Connorshark Definitely considered a solo. Justin is thumping away and Danny is doing the drummers 'job' and keeping the whole thing in time.
*What it's like to chew 5 gum*
Seeing this song being played live is one of the most surreal things I have experienced. 12 minutes of flawless execution from 4 guys pushing 60 it's the kind of thing you think only happens in movies but they actually do it. What a monster of a song
"But I forgot my pen
Sh*t the bed again
Typical"
Absolutely love it.
And it's even funnier cuz that part of the song sounds like it's suppose to be serious hahah
@Connorshark yes lol I'm just saying that specific part of the song instrumentally sounds serious but it isn't lyrically
It means to shit his bed
@@livingtoaster1358 ua-cam.com/video/dlJLNxe3Ga8/v-deo.html just FYI .... Anyway, anyone who's truly been in another dimension knows that it is most definitely lyrically serious... Including Maynard, hence why he sings it ... well... seriously!!!!!!
He is explaining his interdimensional experience in hyperspace!
8:38 greatest moment ever
That's what makes this my favorite song ever.
Matthew Yee understandable
Goosebumps. Every. Time.
It’s like a perfect way to build up to this part of the song.
Hands down
A tragicomic portrait of a character who takes themselves too seriously and yet is a total joke, expressed in a joke song which is presented with all the grandeur and musicianship that prog metal is capable of. A portrayal of the dangers of trying to find truth in the psychedelic experience without the critical thinking and introspection that is always required to find any kind of truth. Truly a message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and warning for those who do not. A fuckin' masterpiece.
Absolutely phenomenal comment. Thank YOU for your critical thinking! A blessing to see the likes of these still floating around the spider web. ❤
It's just as one Canadian professor once said with a voice of a frog: "Be careful of asking for unearned knowledge, the trauma might leave you too scarred to think about asking for anything ever again."
This song has helped me over the years. orange slices and fetal spooning is just one of those things you gotta deal with

In my opinion this is the hardest Tool song, at least for guitar.
For technically it's ez but dat time signature it's fcking confusing + too much Polyrhythmic at this song
This is easily tool’s hardest song on both drums and bass
@@austinthelizard8370 wow thats serious
It's almost impossible on drums too
The length of the song alone would be difficult to get through with half the difficulty

Saw tool last night in St Paul. So glad they added this song back into their show.
i cant even describe the emotions that are evoked by the bass and drums at 7:04
the relationship between the drums n bass on this mystify me ... our drummer (we had a couple over time ) was either too clockwork or too distracted respectively to catch the minute timings ... also my bass never got turned up loud enough ...although i believe thats now a bass trope lol...not that we ever got to play anything close to this level of awesome
TLDR ... fuck yeah !!!
Wish they’d extend that like for 2 mins

I remember when I first listened to Rosetta Stoned I was in computers class in school working on a project . I was just getting into Tool and had already listened to a fair few songs like Schism, Lateralus and The Pot. I was just going to put on some basic hip hop songs as background music and then I saw Rosetta Stoned in my recommendations. I saw the name and that it was eleven minutes long and I thought, "Oh ya this is gonna be good" . When I heard Maynard say, "Alright then, picture this if you will" followed by Adam Jone's powerful heavy guitar and Maynard 's accompanying Lyrics I literally moved back in my chair about 3 feet. I didn't do it intentionally it's as if the music forcefully pushed me back. It caught me off guard I just wasn't expecting it. The whole song was a masterpiece from beginning to end and listening to it for the 1st time was one of the best musical experiences of my life I'll never forget it.
Safe to say I abandoned my project that day and when I got home I listened to Rosetta Stoned and a load of other Tool songs on repeat.
Of course
The riff that Adam crunches on after Maynard mentions not even graduating from fucking high school is so....fucking....tough!

This is Tools most underrated song!
This song is hilarious, badass, and amazing all in one. Only Tool can pull that off

That Adam Jones tone, though!
It makes me think of Cliff Burton's style of distortion if he was a guitarist instead of bassist.

G. O. A. T. !
Some say he has embedded hammer nails in his guitar to get the sound. Others say it’s the ‘silverburst’ tiny fragmented spray paint on his guitar that helps give it that tone
Na Adam Jones is to simp for this.

I seriously don't understand how this could not be one of their top 5 songs, for me its probably my third favorite. This song is a damn masterpiece!

You’re probably thinking of the bass. Cause of most the guitar isn’t that hard but you definitely need good timing
