As teenager, I tend to swear out of anger and frustration. It's the quickest way for me to blow off some steam I have built up inside of me. Luckily I do not use profanity in front of my gaurdian or any strict adult, but I am worried that it will happen eventually.

Thanks, Dr Paul for this video. I asked you about this "3 rules" on your live video last night. And it showed up on my recommended watch list. Brilliant! The video “How To Take Action When You Don't Feel Ready” showed up too. I watched it. Thanks UA-cam. I determine to start to study and be a good parent today and start with this "3 rules" as the 1st step. I am in this positive parenting community now. Good luck for me. :)

I’m divorced and have teens who live primarily with their mom who allows swearing. So the leaving them in the car wouldn’t work because their mom would come pick them up and if they got upset they could to stop visiting me on my limited parenting time and I might even get a letter from her attorney or a visit from CPS. Further, the former wife basically gives them anything they want and won’t help me with them.
I also can’t take away the Internet or cell phones. So my only control is taking away treats or special activities. But that’s not much compared to their phones. They live their lives in front of a screen.

    • @mel3687
      @mel3687 4 роки тому +1

@ Ruth: Precisely. The very first thing I thought was that this tactic would immediately backfire. The kids might even take it as an invitation to start a public smear campaign against their mother who seemingly abandoned them. Then they could punish their mother by disappearing with friends and not returning home or answering their phone--leaving their mother completely in suspense and a heightened state of worry. And this is an especially inappropriate tactic to use if you're dealing with a teenage daughter rather than a son. Leaving a teenage daughter on the side of the road is negligent, especially in places where girls frequently fall victim to sex trafficking, rape and sexual abuse. Just no. Terrible strategy.

Thank you for replying to my previous comment sir.
I believe that in reality it is a fact; people that have been wrapped up in cotton wool and sheltered from what actually does happen in the real world do end up being rather naive to the point others may potentially take advantage of them.
My childhood was not perfect but overall it was good. I am grateful and feel very blessed to have the sort of parents I have. Particularly my father who taught me about the world works and how people can be; even if you are polite and respectful to them.
It does annoy me and I am sure other people that youngsters are always being told do not do this or that or do not say this or that. Once again they are not going be teens or young adults forever.
Today we are encouraging young people to extremely soft and emotionally weak!!
During the days of both the first and Second World War many young men and women were eager to go and fight to defend their country (their home). I can bet everything I own that there was an OVERWHELMING amount of profanity and cursing. The soldiers also had to endure very harsh conditions whilst fighting the enemy.
Furthermore, in those days you really could not afford to be weak willed! If you were suffering from a nervous breakdown, you had better just deal with that problem and make sure that the problem did not deal with you. These were men in their teens and early twenties.
Today I strongly doubt that you would see that sort of thing; people willing to join the army of their country to defend their home.
Now I’m sure you will tell me; “but we are trying to raise generation that will be kinder to one another. To be better than us”.
Let’s get REAL here; we can’t cheat human nature!! It’s in our genetic makeup. No matter how educated someone is about something or someone that is different to them, if they do not like another culture, another race or even another country; they do not like it FULL STOP.
This is not a case of agree or disagree; it’s a fact.
As you grow older a lot of the things you were told when you were younger, you gradually come to find is completely and utterly untrue.
As I have stated earlier, when you are around 15/16 you are already exposed to some realities of the world. You’re told not to do or say certain things. If you do then these are the consequences but then you look around you and you observe other people doing the EXACT SAME THING and facing no consequences. In fact this person appears to be well liked and respected! Yet they are doing all the things that you have been prevented from doing! Why is that? Is that because you’re are still at an age that you can be used as a doormat and abused by people?
I would just like people to be far more honest and REALISTIC with young people! It will help them a lot!
Your parents will not be around forever. In fact as a teen you may find yourself in a situation that will require you to hold your own, stand up for yourself, especially in situations where you are genuinely being mistreated by another teen or adult.
That will surely help you in life!!
In school or university if you are being bullied and you do not retaliate, other people will only join in and bully you further. Even the teachers/lecturers know this. The bullying won’t end. It’s the same outside these institutions. In the workplace or in public if you do not retaliate when someone has disrespected you in any form or manner; chances are they will never respect you and other people seeing this will also more than likely have the same opinion and may well do the same.
I gave an example of my relatives who are not doing well at the moment. In my lifetime I have observed that the individuals that tell others not to do this or that are actually ten times worse themselves. I am not having a dig at you but I’m just putting that out there based on what I’ve seen.
My relative that always scolded me for cursing when I was younger is now in a foreign country raising her children on welfare whilst her husband is earning minimum wage. I mean if she was such a saint then I think she would have been wiser, FAR WISER before hand. Like getting job first, beginning and building her career first before deciding to raise a family!
Apologies if I appear to be ranting but I just thought I needed to make this point because judging by the other comments I have seen here on this video some parents seem to offended by anything and even everything their teen does! Indirectly they may pay for this when their teen is older; I’m 18 now I can do what I want when I want! F**k you!!
Now I am 31 years old as I type this, I can honestly say hand on heart, I have never ever said that to either one of my parents.

Thanks once again for replying to my comment!
The point I am making is this, why target the youngsters when in reality would it not be better to target the adults who should know better? I mean I still think getting teens to stop swearing is unrealistic. They really will only stop if they personally want to. If adults stop swearing or doing the things that you'd want teens to stop doing then why not start with the adults? After all is it not the adults that the teens look up to? I am just making the point that what you and other parents are trying to do is just UNREALISTIC! Why not start at the top if you want to see some real change?
Or is it because an adult can be rude and disrespectful and normally face no consequence? I mean are you going to ground them or tell they can't go on that trip that they've looking forward to because of swearing.
If you think that it's a double standard then why not explain the double standard so that the teens can understand. Remember they will not be teens forever!
When you are talking about swearing, do you mean swearing to offend someone or do you mean swearing casually to emphasize a point in a conversation one may be having with friends or peers?
There is a podcast I sometimes follow and they talk about MMA and Combat Sports which I am a fan of. Below is a link to one of their episodes.
    ua-cam.com/video/FRAXOFY3j4k/v-deo.html
How they are swearing in the episode, would that offend you? Would you punish your 16/17 year old for speaking like that?

Ironically my parents are okay with moderate cussing (just not the most severe words) but although I often giggle when someone else uses cuss words, I've always generally abstained from it (except for mild language like "sucks" or "freaking"). That way it's more impactful when I do (as it's very out of character for me). Like once when my brother was in the upstairs bathroom and my mom was using the downstairs one, I was having an episode (I have Crohn's) and I really needed in. My brother was taking a long time and I was said "(word that starts with "d") it! Hurry up!" and everyone was amused by it. We all had a good laugh over it.

If you don't want your kids to swear one simple answer is don't sweat yourself or at least not in the presents of kids that's one way you can stop them from doing it and if they do swear ask them wear they learned it from and if they say they got it from you please don't be a typical parent and deny it try to be understanding apologize exsplain nicely that those words are not appropriate and refrain from swearing your self if the kids continue to mimic the behaviour then you either make consequences or you take them to get help or advice in-order to find out why and a way to stop the behaviour

  • @IKE_MMA

In response to the reply you left on my latest comment sir; let me go back to the time that I was 16/17.
I did curse quite a bit at this age and at the time I was living with family relatives. Besides the fact that I always suspected that these people secretly hated me....their daughter (my cousin) always used to scold me and even abuse me because of my usage of foul language. Their daughter was older than me by about 9 years. It was strange because when anyone else swore or used foul language it didn’t seem to bother her AT ALL!!
However, fast forward 15+ years later from 2004/2005 and she is now raising four children whilst living in welfare. Her husband is earning minimum wage. I on the other hand have several Engineering degrees under my belt and I still swear.
Now would you say that I was raised poorly or was my cousin raised poorly?
Why not just teach youngsters about the real world? It is what they are being prepared to enter in the first right? So what is the point of shielding them from realities that they will undoubtedly have to face?
Teens swearing at their parents is disrespectful. I am sure you will agree that even if the person is well over the age of 18 it is still just as bad and probably even more disrespectful!!
This is extraordinary! I have outlined a situation where an adult will do the same thing that a teen would do; swearing etc. The adult gets away with it, they still get what the want most of the time but if the 16/17 year old was in their shoes they would suffer a consequence?!? It’s MAD!! I mean what does that say to the teen?
Just wait a few more years and you run your mouth as hard and fast as you want?!?
It just does not make sense. They are not going to be teens or young adults forever.
I remember two separate occasions when my father swore at me. I was 14 the first time and 16 the second time. Do you think I should have turned around and told him not to swear at me?!? He swore a lot in the presence of my brother and I.
Till this day, I have never been arrested by the police, never broken the law, never dabbled in drugs , no criminal record or history etc. As I have stated earlier, I have turned out to be the complete opposite.
I have found that people who have been exposed to profanity and even used it at a young age somewhat tend to be much more socially balanced when they are older.
The other day there was debate here in the U.K. about whether kids should be allowed to have an alcoholic drink on New Year’s Eve. Some people did mention that if your kids at completely restricted from something when they are young, when they are older they will probably do whatever it is that they have been prevented from doing to the point that it becomes excessive!!
In my case, I first tasted alcohol at the age of 9. Throughout my teens on special occasions such as Easter, Christmas etc, I had just one glass of wine or cider. However, even at that point in my life I never had an urge to always have an alcoholic drink and beyond that get drunk. I had already tasted alcohol and it did not AMAZE me or even excite me. Just to drive this point home; even when my parents were out and we had some alcohol at home the thought of sneaking in a few sips just never crossed my mind. Maybe I was a crazy teen or even a dumb teen for not trying to get drunk when I was alone I don’t know. I guess I knew enough not to be irresponsible at that age. Even now as I type this comment I can safely say that I have had any problems with alcohol or drugs.
Or maybe my parents are just two crazy people for raising me the way they did; I just do not know.

Ikeojiako, I will not say that someone was raised poorly - that is a judgement call that is not mine to make. Thanks for the explanation about your childhood; I now understand where you are coming from. Congratulations on the engineering degrees - that is awesome.
As for the “real world” that is subjective. As I mentioned, some people choose to limit profanity in their world. I do not believe this stunts them or their children. But again, I better understand your perspective.

Wow so no one has replied or tried to challenge me on the comment I have made (you’ll find it further down in the comments below where I have given two scenarios where the individual in each case has used foul language) so does that mean that I am right that it is one rule for the adults and a different rule for the teens? An adult can use foul language and suffer no consequence for not controlling their mouth?

    • @LiveOnPurposeTV
      @LiveOnPurposeTV  4 роки тому

ikeojiako, yes, it is kind of a double-standard. In our culture, it is unusual for an adult to ask another adult to refrain from using foul language, because there is no control like in a parent/child relationship; however, I have seen it before. Also, there are people who let it be known that they do not appreciate vulgarity, and therefore those who know of this preference will refrain out of respect. In some cases, there may be consequences for the adult, like losing a job, not having many friends, or being arrested for disorderly conduct. If more parents were to teach their children how to speak respectfully without the use of limiting swear words (one reason why I made this video), less adults would be in the habit of cursing. A good, simple thing to say to a child who asks why adults can swear and they cannot is, "We don't know how they were raised."

    Great video!
Thing is, is there any point to stopping Teens from swearing? In the real world, adults swear and (even worse at other times) they don’t appear to suffer any consequences.
I say this as someone who grew up being told not to swear but when the teenager observes adults using profanity and not suffering any consequence for such behaviour they will probably think to themselves when I am older I can be as disrespectful as I please and nothing bad will happen. I will more than likely not suffer any consequence.

    • @LiveOnPurposeTV
      @LiveOnPurposeTV  4 роки тому

ikeojiako, there are many reasons adults don't want their children to swear. Many schools have rules and they would get in trouble, also they need to learn the language so they can communicate in the workplace and go further in that area.

    • @IKE_MMA
      @IKE_MMA 4 роки тому +2

      @@LiveOnPurposeTV I can understand that but let's be honest in reality when growing up you are told by your parents don't say this or do that and if you do what it is you are not allowed to do or say, these are the consequences. Again i will emphasise my point that when the adults use profanity they don't suffer any sort of consequence and I am sure that young people observe this. The young people will perceive this as;
"I can't use profanity or be disrespectful yet, I just have to wait a couple years first".
Take this first scenario: A 16 year old is having a conversation with their parents and they use profanity then they are grounded or given some sort of punishment as a consequence.
Take this second scenario: A 31 year old is waiting in line in a store or office waiting to be served when they arrive at the front of the queue. The queue is so long and is hardly moving and when they finally arrive at the front of queue (let us say in the case of being in a store) they are so annoyed at having to have had spent so much time and even wasted so much time they use profanity and are rude to the member of staff. Chances are in this case, the adult will not suffer any consequence for behaving in this way. I strongly doubt that they will be told to leave the premises for using foul language or for being rude.
"WHAT WAS TAKING SO LONG??!?!?!?!? BEEN WAITING HERE FOR 45 F***ING MINUTES!!!!! NO DON'T BOTHER EXPLAINING!! I DO NOT WANT TO HEAR YOUR B*****IT EXCUSES!!!"
It is highly unlikely that they will be told:
"I BEG YOUR PARDON?!?!? WAIT RIGHT THERE; I'M CALLING YOUR MOTHER/FATHER!! PERHAPS THEY SHOULD GET OVER HERE AND WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP AND WATER!! HOW DARE YOU!!!"
Chances are, the adult will still get their way.
Now sir what is difference between the 16 year old and the 31 year old behaving in the exact same way? Each person is a human being that can become impatient. I can remember many instances in my teenage years when I observed adults using profanity in places, where EVEN I KNEW that nobody should.
I will say that when you turn this subject (Teens using foul language etc) the other way round, strangely enough, people stay quiet about it. Although I think I can somehow see why; it is almost like double standards. You tell someone that should not do something and you do it yourself?!?!?!? What are you? A hypocrite?
I mean what is the difference between a 16 year old using profanity or answering their parents back and 25 or 31+ year old doing exactly the same thing?
You say that there are many reasons adults don't want their children to swear; what reasons do the adults have to use profanity?
Please don't tell me its disrespectful when or if the 16 year old does it because let's be honest it's disrespectful when anyone of ANY age does it!
You mentioned that schools have rules prohibiting the use of profanity and I completely understand that even though I know that in reality the students are probably using profanity outside the school anyway!!
You also mentioned the workplace, I have never worked in or visited a public premises whether it be an office, store, workshop, construction site, bank, even hospital ward or anywhere and did not hear staff on at least one occasion not use profanity.
I do like your videos and I am not trying to discredit you or anything but this is something I have observed in many places. I just can't stand the pressure that many societies place on teens and kids to be super well behaved and respectful. What is a 16 year old to do when a 31 year old is disrespectful towards them and they've done absolutely nothing wrong?!?!? (It would be great if you could make a video on this) Or another situation where the 16 year old could well be in the right?
You see you are not going to be kid/teen forever. Eventually we all grow up and learn that a lot of the things we were told when we were young was absolute nonsense because you gradually start to see what the world is really like. You start to see what people are really like.
At 15/16 and even younger, I already knew that there were certain adults that would treat me badly no matter how respectful I was towards them. They just did not like me and I was never given a reason why. They would always think the worst of me and just treat me like crap. Situations like this, you rarely ever hear about being discussed. Sure, you hear about the abuse cases but why don't people talk about the problems (such as the adult never treating the particular child well ever!) leading up to the abuse and intervening before it gets worse. Adults are human beings and will know other adults who they do not particularly like and likewise will know other children who they do not particularly like either.
All in all sir, is it really double standards?
My parents (especially my father) were not particularly strict in my upbringing but they were not stupid. They raised me to be respectful and to treat others as you would want to be treated but at the same time to not be stupid and ignorant of the real world.
      Thanks again for responding!

Well sir I’m not sure if you have read the reply I made to one of your earlier replies to my earlier comments so I will post it here:
@Live On Purpose TV Thank you for replying sir.

Despite what they are being told, teens ARE observing what is happening around them.
Why is there a consequence when someone behaves in s negative way and there isn’t when the next person should do the exact same thing? Is it really just because of their age?!?!
Soldiers do an amazing job defending your country and I’m sure you respect them overwhelmingly for that. They are the reason as to why in a country such as the USA you can go sleep soundly each night and enjoy the freedoms your country offers. Yet I am sure that these guys swear a lot! I’m sure they curse like sailors. Are you seriously going to tell a 15/16 year old the excuse, well I don’t know how they were raised”.
Sir with all due respect, if someone is successful, 95% of the time it is more than likely that they WERE raised well!
I’m not sure how else to emphasise this point because it is quite annoying to be told one thing and later on in your life you somewhat later find out that it was more or less a complete lie!

Ikeojiako, sorry I didn’t reply sooner to your comment. Holidays are a busy time, as you know. I do not believe that swearing is a part of nature. I know lots of people who do not swear, or at least do it very rarely.
I do not believe that asking children to not curse is restricting their vocabulary; as I said in a previous response, it is better to increase their vocabulary using different, additional words. There are other ways to express anger, or better yet, we can teach children how to diffuse the anger quickly or choose to not get angry at all. I have some videos on that.
Children are naturally exposed to foul language through movies, friends, adults, literature, etc. If a parent doesn’t like swearing then it is up to them to explain to their child that others may do it, but in our family we don’t. That is all I meant by the statement “We don’t know how they were raised.” I agree that many successful people swear, and what I meant by that statement is that we don’t know if cursing was acceptable or not acceptable in their youth. For many families, foul language is acceptable and I do not believe that makes them “bad”. This video is intended for those parents who are trying to raise their family in a curse-free environment.
      Thank you for watching.

Sir....I think I should've asked you this question first when I came across your video earlier.
Why not make a video/guide on how adults can stop swearing?
There are so much content and material everywhere within and beyond the internet on kids/teens should stop swearing but virtually nothing for adults to stop swearing.
Why not start with the people in society who should know better?
After all that's why they are called and are adults. They should be mature enough to know better and do better right?
I do personally feel that videos such as this are purely teaching youngsters double standards. That when you get to a certain age then you can be as disrespectful as you like and suffer no consequences.
That is what they are observing because they live in this world just like yourself.

There are many pro-swearing people who look at it as another way to express their feelings. Some say it falls under free speech. Regardless, I am no a fan.

G-D's last name IS NOT DAMN.
Think of someone wise, kind and caring. The type of man or woman you deeply respect and look up to as a role model.
Could you imagine such a person spewing out filthy language in a sudden moment of rage or excitement? Probably not. And for good reason. It just isn’t a Holy thing to do.
In Hebrew, Profanity is called "Nibul Peh"
When someone uses profanity, he abuses the divine gift of speech, demonstrating a lack of refinement and self-control. Speaking profanity violates a biblical prohibition. There is reason to forbid not only saying profane words but even hearing them.
    Close Your Ears
The Gemara (Shabbos 33a) says, “Due to the sin of vulgar speech, troubles abound, and harsh decrees are renewed, and the youth among the ‘enemies of Israel’ die, and orphans and widows cry out for help and are not answered…” That is about speaking profanity, using curse words in your speech. The Gemara continues to say that anyone who speaks profanity (nibul peh), has Gehenom deepened for him. Not just someone who speaks, but “even one who hears and is silent.” The Gemara assigns a serious punishment to someone who hears profanity and remains silent.
The truth is that using bad language does more than keep you from being one step above. It actually schleps you down. Although we generally think of speech as just a superficial act, in truth it has a strong impact on your inner self. The words that leave your mouth make an imprint on your mind and heart and the people that hear them. No matter how high up you are on the rope of fine, noble character, a few rotten words can throw you back down to the ground.
Vulgar and profane speech are public evidence of a speaker's ignorance, inadequacy, or immaturity.
A speaker who profanes must be ignorant or indifferent to G-d's stern command that His name must be treated with reverence and not used in vain.
A speaker who mouths vulgarity or profanity to punctuate or emphasize speech confesses inadequacy in his or her own language skills. Properly used, modern languages require no such artificial boosters.
A speaker who employs vulgarity or profanity to catch someone's attention with shock effect engages in a babyish device that is inexcusable as juvenile or adult behavior. Such language is morally bankrupt.
But a person who can express him or herself in an eloquent and dignified manner is respected and brings honor upon those he or she represents.
It is essential that those who sin, and use profanity, do teshuvah, come to the knowledge of G-D and keep His mitzvot (commandments). Those that refuse have no place in the Olam HaBa ( World to Come)

I just thought I would share these two links from two podcasts. Are you offended when the 'F' word is said in either one of these two videos? Would you tell these guys to stop swearing or I am going to wash your mouth out with soap and water? These are successful individuals also. So you would disagree that these two people are speaking respectfully?

ikeojiako, I believe that speaking respectfully includes refraining from using profanity. You are welcome to hold a different opinion. I am not telling anyone they can't swear, I am simply giving parents some options of what they can do if they don't want their own children to use foul language.

Well sir, you’re welcome. However, I think it might be better that we teach young people how it really is in the real world.
I mean a 15/16/17/18 year old is seeing what is happening around them when they are outside their home and school.
We may as well tell them just curb your language until you’re older and then you can be as disrespectful as you please with your behaviour and words and there really won’t be that many consequences.
Ok, if you really want to see a real change why not start from the top? Start at the top of food chain? Persuade the adults to curb their language?
Or is it because people feel that teenagers are easier to control whilst someone older would tell you, “go f**k yourself and may even hit you?

Very interesting content you have sir! However, why not make a video on getting adults to stop swearing? After all should this not be a top down procedure. If teens and young people observe adults not cursing in a taxing/stressful situation, would they not learn better that way by seeing the example being set?
I mean if there are consequences just because they have not reached a certain age then isn’t the portrayed message simple just don’t do it because of your age and there are consequences? Whereas of your older nothing tends to happen to you if you use foul language.
    Explain this double standard.
If there is something I have noticed more than ever these days is that a lot of people, myself included, now find that I have to unlearn a lot the stuff that I was taught whilst being a teen. A lot of this stuff, later I realised is totally and UTTERLY untrue about the real world!!
No disrespect to you sir, but I tend to find that people who seem to be offended by certain words or certain petty things are probably people who have never suffered a single day in their lives!! Trust me sir these sort of individuals actually do exist!

    • @LiveOnPurposeTV
      @LiveOnPurposeTV  3 роки тому +1

Ike Ojiako, I understand what you are saying. It is going to be difficult to tell kids not to swear if you are. Not every adult swears, we don't in our household and it was a rule. I would not generalize that all people offended by words have never suffered. It is more about choosing how you want to live. Some people have no problem with swearing and others do.
