Great Review! Just bought one. Waiting for its Arrival.. your review has me even more excited.. Ive been learning a lot about knives so Ill pass it along.. The "finger groove" is actually called a CHOIL.. didnt know that until someone taught me so just passing it along.. Again Excellent review
Hi, I wanted to know if based on your experience with this knife, is it the right choice for a very compact survival knife for use in the wilderness? obviously I would compare it to a machete for the heaviest tasks, I often make expeditions to remote places and I need something reliable but I have no experience with neck knives, your opinion is very important to me, thank you very much Michele.
Been using it since march 2014, still rocking strong, in my opinion perfect design, not a fan of a hollow grind but still it works awesome, would love to have one made in a better steel. Handle is just fenomenal, and the sheath is good.
***** Haha! I just ordered mine and I live in Ireland (Leitrim) The best place I could find was Amazon.co.uk but of course its way more expensive in the UK as with all knives...
***** I completely agree, out of all the Irish knife shops I've only ever bought an overpriced Mora that didn't live up to my expectations.I really like Schrade and ESEE and I've only been able to get them when in America and pay for undercarriage baggage on the way back to put them in. The best way I've found to get that sort of gear is via Amazon.co.uk (Which has a pretty pathetic collection) and have it delivered to Parcel Motel in the North and every once in a while I drive up there and collect them.I saw the SCHF10 on Amazon.co.uk for 123pounds while it is on Amazon.com for less than $50, I mean seriously WTF!!! Anyway I agree with everything apart from the point about knife laws, as far as I know you are allowed to carry a blade under three Inches (76mm) as long as it folds and doesn't lock and any blade as long as you have a credible purpose, but i might be wrong... I watch lots of PREPAREDMIND101's videos, they are really good but can be infuriating because i cannot get any of the gear he reviews in Ireland Regards, Ruben
***** The condor is indeed a great knife and I'd love one and moras aren't bad if you have a small budget. I got an ESEE6 at bargain price when a friend left to go to Canada and he sold it to me for cheap, I agree they are lovely! I only have the SCHF14 (would highly recommend) and I only got that because for some reason a local shop in Sligo (Call of The Wild) was stocking it for 30 pounds!!! The SCAXE2 does look good but I was given an old hatchet several years ago to repair and I had some hickory lying around so I used that to make a nice handle. As you can see pretty much all of my gear I happened upon by chance and even someone with a huge amount of money couldn't get a very good kit made unless they went abroad!! I hadn't heard of Thrunite but I will definitely try them out as I have been looking for a good torch, Thanks! Parcel Motel is great and as far as i know the laws aren't any different but companies are allowed to sell to people inside their own borders and of course they consider the north as being their own country that makes it easy for me to just drive up and bring them down into R.O.I . There are no retailers but they ship to the north so I'm able to get their products anyway. I'll let you know if I find a better website for that kind of gear that ships to Ireland Regards, Ruben.
9cr18mov is the equivalent of 440c . 8a is 440b . This knife is definitely better edge retention . Im gonna go buy one now. Im so glad I found the f16 . I love recurve blades . it looks a bit large for a neck knife. But im 6'1 200 or so so I dont think ill notice the difference. Ill be coming from a CRKT foltz minimalist tanto . Great knife but the 5cr15mov is a bit soft for my liking . but still a good knife. Im going to gift that one to a friend that liked it .
this is my current edc. I have put this knife up against some serious tasks and it has stood tall and proud. Schrade is really coming out with some really nice products.
Awesome knife, I wear m8ne with adjustable slip knots for my neck and belt. Sparks great with a ferro rod without chipping the paint. I did round smooth out the pummel with a dremmel o it wouldn't poke my abdomen.
Your right, on price an quality, I have the 36, 56L, an 57. An love all of them, I reshaped the v "secondary bevel! To What I believe is convex. An they all cut razor sharp now, an were pretty sharp to begin with. Plus two came with an ok fire steel, an on with a diamond field sharpener. Love them.
Rockwell(Rc) hardness depends on heat treat ,not the kind of steel. There is a recommended Rc for "8Cr" and "9 Cr", etc. 9 Cr has more Carbon (.9%) than 8 Cr (.8)therefore should be harder, but without correct heat treat it" may" be more brittle. Rc - Rockwell hardness does not indicate brittleness. It can be confusing. Who knows how the Chinese mfg.'s heat treat, QC, etc. Thanks for the great videos. Spyderco's web site has a great chart explaining different steels and alloy's.
It reminds me of the Gerber Compact, but it's cheaper. I plan to buy a neck knife sometime, but the tiniest models have tiny handles and while I have good dexterity I need more handle length for my large hands. Very good video as usual.
I am trying to decide on an order and might buy this, but if I may impose on you I need an answer/opinion. Would you prefer the 8Cr13Mov to AUS-8 steel. I have the chance to buy the Kershaw Bear Hunter and Antelope Hunter knives in either steels. It's my intent to use one as a Mora substitute.
I believe nutnfancy has a video on it that I watched about a year ago. Check his website. I do not have any plans at this point to review it. For the money it look pretty good.
Yeah, but they've updated it from what I can see. Looks like they made the grind higher and flat, and Nutn doesn't have any field footage- at which you rock. But anyway, thanks for the answer.
I bought 4 of these for use in my TIB's[Terrorist Interdiction Bags]. I really don't go for neck knives, but for a quick deployment...Anyway, for belt use, the 'Large' Tek-Lok fits the sheath perfectly.
Nice knife, thanks for the specs right at the begining. From scales to the tip is the blade length when an officer measures your blade. Good review, i bought some of these for the cars as back ups. I striped a birch tree(bark) huge birch tree with just this knife.
Schrade has some really cool designs and the quality is *usually* pretty decent, even being made in China and all. They could improve their QC a bit though, I've had one dagger and one folder that were wonky and had to get exchanged.
I love the knife, but the sheath retention is too tight. I actually managed to stab my finger getting it out. Any suggestions on modifications, like where to heat the sheath to loosen it up?
The BK14 will be a better knife because of the FFG and the 1095 steel, but you will need to get the zytel handle scales so total price is going to be close to $50 when its all said and done. So for $20 the schrade is a great runner up!
hey bro, do u think I can take the handle slabs off, put a paracord wrap on that tang and still have it fit snugly in the sheath? I'd prob have to re-mold the kydex.
Would this be too heavy to make a edc neck knife? I've been looking for a neck knife, but I'm not sure what to look for without breaking the bank. I was looking at the ka-bar becker necker but I don't want to have to drop a ton on a kydex sheath I could just get with the blade.
RobPolson I shortened the cord and just drop it in my pocket with the cord hanging out. Easy to put into action that way and I trust the sheath will keep it in place. It is an excellent knife , the ergonomics, size and cutting ability are great.
I am going to drill out the handle (skelotonize it) to some degree, not enough to weaken it but just to bring about some balance. Right now it is extremely handle heavy. Then it might be neck worthy too.
I'm not a fan of neck knives so I use it as a in-the-pocket knife with a paracord attached to the sheath and to a belt loop. The size is a perfect fit to carry in my pocket along with a Kydex wallet. I've been carrying this knife daily in this manner without any issues and it's available anytime I need to use it. I would attach a photo but don't see that option. Excellent review, well done.
Exactly how I carry mine. I just started using a soft basic inside the pocket gun holster to let it ride in ( inside of its own sheath of course) , to keep it from tearing my pant pockets.
Thanks for taking time to make this review! Your video was featured on "Best Bug Out Gear" at bestbugoutgear.com/schrade-schf16-re-curve-tanto-drop-point-fixed-blade-knife-with-sheath/
I bought one and couldn't be happier with it! It came shaving sharp outta the box. The only issue I had was that the kydex sheath. There was a little too much rattle for my taste. Otherwise everything you said was my experience also. One of the best "in hand" feels of any knife I own and I have XL hands.
Good job Aaron! Also similar and definitely worth checking out is the Gerber Paracord knife. Its the exact same thing really if you take off the belt clip and throw on paracord. Also $20 @ Walmart. www.gerbergear.com/Survival/Knives/Bear-Grylls-Paracord-Fixed-Blade_31-001683
first I would voulgerly point out first blueing on a knife is over rated and the hand is to short also having a longer curve on a knovf cuts into sharping time im would not approve it

It is a nice design. Mine came fairly blunt though.
Sorry to hear that.

Oh, it's not a problem... sharpens right up! This happens sometime.

👍 Nice review. Amazon must have watched it, they raised the price to $23.00. Based upon your review and price I purchased one.
The schf14 looks awesome as well! Thanks again for the reviews!
No problem Andrew!
So which one do you like more for edc the 24 or the 16
Very good review; thanks for doing such a good job and sharing this.
Thanks glad it helped.
This knife just made it to the top of my neck knife list for the budget price. Nice vid, and seems like a nice lil package
Ya you wont regret it.
I stripped mine of the paint, made some beautiful black walnut handles, and gave it a fine edge. For $20 and a little work, can't beat it.
Been using it since march 2014, still rocking strong, in my opinion perfect design, not a fan of a hollow grind but still it works awesome, would love to have one made in a better steel. Handle is just fenomenal, and the sheath is good.

outstanding review from you thats why i ordered ithave been looking for a neck knife, thanks
You know that every time you say kydex I hear plastic

just got my schf16 today and already cut myself with it. Very sharp out of the box. Thanks for suggesting this knife.
***** Glad you are happy with it!

AUS-8 every time!
How delicate is the tip? looks like it would be very skinny due to the way the knife is ground.
would you prefer this or an see izula
c cork Izula 2
Hey, Aaron, nice video, as always. Any plans on reviewing the new Kershaw Diskin Hunter? No vids on YT and I am really looking into ordering one.
Thanks for the complement and support!
I always thought it was hollow grind not hollow ground
It is a hollow grind is was hollow ground. Ground is past tense for grind. Like ground beef is "grinded beef" lol..
I bought 4 of these for use in my TIB's[Terrorist Interdiction Bags]. I really don't go for neck knives, but for a quick deployment...Anyway, for belt use, the 'Large' Tek-Lok fits the sheath perfectly.
336W That is awesome!

Nice little beast............... Thank You for showing.
I love the knife, but the sheath retention is too tight. I actually managed to stab my finger getting it out. Any suggestions on modifications, like where to heat the sheath to loosen it up?
Just like I said in the video, heat up the kydex by the finger guard.
Heres a better suggestion. Turn your fuckin brain on
Would you recommend the Kabar bk14 or the shrade schf16 for basic outdoor tasks?
The BK14 will be a better knife because of the FFG and the 1095 steel, but you will need to get the zytel handle scales so total price is going to be close to $50 when its all said and done. So for $20 the schrade is a great runner up!
Great Review man, I'm getting one too,
May be it's coz of your review :D
+Ryan Dharma Thanks a lot my friend.
gideonstactical You're welcome Bro :)
Thx much I might get one based on your review. Let me drink a few more beers and think about it. LOL
How would you rate this against the Schrade 35?
Charles Larson I have not used the 35 so I can't say.
No belt clip no deal
hey bro, do u think I can take the handle slabs off, put a paracord wrap on that tang and still have it fit snugly in the sheath? I'd prob have to re-mold the kydex.
16.5toHeaven You would have to do alot of moding
Tfr51 I can't believe you said that
Looks great!

+Blazin'Blades It is sweet!
Would this be too heavy to make a edc neck knife? I've been looking for a neck knife, but I'm not sure what to look for without breaking the bank. I was looking at the ka-bar becker necker but I don't want to have to drop a ton on a kydex sheath I could just get with the blade.
Also, could I remove the handle to show the full tang and then wrap the handle with paracord instead?
A bit too heavy and thick for a neck knife, don't you think?
RobPolson I shortened the cord and just drop it in my pocket with the cord hanging out. Easy to put into action that way and I trust the sheath will keep it in place. It is an excellent knife , the ergonomics, size and cutting ability are great.

+RobPolson agree it's too bulky for a neck knife. I just static line it to my belt loop and put it in my pocket
I'm not a fan of neck knives so I use it as a in-the-pocket knife with a paracord attached to the sheath and to a belt loop. The size is a perfect fit to carry in my pocket along with a Kydex wallet.
