I love how this song ends. By function of the last chord, something about it in our brain leaves you wanting more, but you can't have any; it's over just like the relationship spoken about in the song. Just plain brilliant.
Ends on the dominant harmony. Daring. Leaves us up in the air, harmonically speaking. Paul definitely gets it in regard to melody and harmony. A true composer of our generation.
I'm 64. Saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan early '64. I became a musician, like millions of other Americans, because of that night. My love of music has allowed me to travel and meet and play with folks all over the USA. And I never forget my first love: The Beatles. I learned to play bass by mimicking Paul's bass lines. Never had a lesson, can't read music but played on several albums here and there and jammed with great musicians. Thanks, Paul! I did finally get to see Paul live in Charlotte a few years back.
After what you wrote, I feel sad that you never got to meet him. I feel he'd have enjoyed knowing how he and the lads had such a positive effect on your life.
He was correct, because he was talking about his friend, not this fraud William whom John couldn't stand. Elsewise why would John begin "How do you sleep" with the Sgt Pepper album. He started with that album because he was singing about Faul, not his old and close friend Paul who had been gone for a few years at that point. Billy Shears broke the Beatles up.

When I was a child, Paul was the cutest Beatle. Now I see him as someone who often wrote from the heart, with feeling. This live version feels a little bit fast for my ears, but the fact that he wrote this in what? his mid-twenties is still astonishing some 50 years later.
Agree. Depressing, devastating, the worst stuff nigutmares are made of. Having earned the love of the most beautiful girl who ever lived, only to lose it completely from neglect. It is the most beautiful song I totally hate.
Paul’s ability and genius to write songs with great lyrics and melodies that oddly feel familiar - and welcome - the first time you hear them has been such a joy. Too many to count, and we all know the words to each!
A very simple love song no intricate musical instrument playing in the background no complicated piano playing yet the effect is so magnificent and the vocalization is simple but it makes a senior citizen cry reminding him of the life he just live. The Beatles are the greatest band ever
"She no longer needs you!" 1984 - separated/divorced. This song kept me going knowing that I wasn't alone & that someone, someone namely Paul McCartney, knew such pain. Yes, one of his greatest songs; it brings me face to face with my bitter sweet memories..."there will be times when all the things she said will fill your head; you won't forget her".
Paul always had taste. Everybody else would have pumped up the sound by using half an orchestra but this is so beautifully reduced - and thats why it sounds even better. Yes its a great composition too but you could have spoiled it with some wall of sound or something. Classic.
Fab song. He's in C major. On the original Capital LP we got in the US, the song came out in B major. I'm a musician, so I've been playing it in B major all these years. I guess Paul did it back in the day for the LP in C major, and the producers/engineers at EMI slowed down the tape of the recording of Paul doing the song (" the mix") that they sent to Capital and we in the USA got it in B major. Just a little trivia from a Beatlemaniac. Beautiful song, no way around it. Amazing.
Great observation, but i can happily inform you that the UK release of Revolver also has this song in B. Every chance he recorded it in C and George Martin varispeeded it down, as this was bang on the era The Beatles started utilising such techniques in the studio.

Sir James Paul McCartney is one heck of a songwriter, singer, and player of bass, lead electric, acoustic, drums and, I'm told, about 25 other instruments. RIP Brian, both Georges and John.
I think I read recently that Paul tuned his guitar down a half step so that the fingering was in "C position' but the actual key was B. I've seen a few vids of him playing it and the chord shapes are for the key of C.
I think the "older" ladies who cried to/in this concert who is in the same age as Paul saw them perform live in their teenage years and in this concert they remembered the feeling the first time they saw them and how they grew up in their music. The way they used to fangirl to the Beatles in their times. It's amazing. It's like "I remembered screaming how much I adore them while they perform" The Beatles is classic.

One of the saddest songs ever written
Life itself
Try Warren Zevon's "Keep Me In Your Heart".
Macca can be quite devastatingly bleak at times. This is possibly the starkest, bleakest and most depressing song ever written. And it is awesome.

Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all the words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!
You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her
When she said her love is dead
You think she needs you
You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago
She knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him
Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be time when all the things she said
will fill your head
You won't forget her
Anyone who thinks that Yesterday is McCartney's best song about male heartbreak has no idea
one love thank you so much
My day breaks, my mind aches
I find that all the words of kindness linger on
When he no longer needs me
I want him, I need him
And yet I don't believe him when he said his love is dead
I think he needs me...
And in his eyes I see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years...
I stay here, he logs out
He says that long ago he knew someone but now she's gone
He doesn't need her...
And in his eyes I see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years...
