Yoko’s cruelty toward Julian revealed her dark heart. John was no better for his own abandonment of his son. Although I loved his music, I didn’t respect John’s selfishness and lack of integrity. I also found it shocking that Yoko planted herself in the studio while they worked. She had so much control over John that he went along with this flagrant disrespect of his band mates.

I've always thought so. While Ringo had a distinctive style and sound, George as well on guitar. Their vocal harmonies required Paul, John and George, so they all were absolutely essential to the Beatles sound, but - I see more and more how Paul was the stronger song writer/composer. John had great facility with words/language, but Paul wrote stronger melodies, and wrote stronger chord changes. I find Paul's solo output more interesting and enjoyable than John's solo work.

The problem with all of Paul's revelations about Yoko is that they don't jive with her actions that we can prove. For instance, John died and his first son, Julian, was given very little in his will. Yoko was the executor of John's will. This is what's known as a conflict of interest. Julian sued, and Yoko fought him for 16 years before settling. That's wrong. No matter how you slice it, that's wrong.

    • @ExternalInputs
      @ExternalInputs 2 місяці тому +117

If someone is named executor in a will, there is no conflict of interest. Their job is to distribute the proceeds of the estate as stated in the will. They don't get to change things more to their own liking. Suing over the wording and beneficiaries in a will can be done, but that has nothing to do with the executor. No matter how you slice it, you're wrong.

she was "associated" with the so-called Avant Garde NYC scene. But, like many "scenes" in the Art world, there's a few originals; there's a few iconoclasts and there's 100's of hangers-on, fakes and no-talents. Unfortunately for the general public, Press, Media, Pundits spin up 'scenes' for the sake of it and make them attractive enough to pull-in floating idiots; rich-kids with no life, and, cultural nomads.
Ono was "part of" ( i.e. a insignificant satellite) of the Fluxus art movement/gang. Fluxus threw up some talented and interesting people (Beuys, Paik, Riley) But , like any new concept, it also had 100s of other "performers" that had no idea and no talent. Lennon got sucked in...and was quite rightly, intrigued with the idea of breaking convention - which he was inherently skilled in, before that.
Ono got lucky and got possessive. She wasn't the first, and will not be the last, to bump into a very advantageous event. There's no point in punishing her or being nasty. After all, Hollywood, Haute Couture, ''Design' , Journalism, Authors ...and music, is full of 'lucky' passengers, family connections and fads.

Very well said. And at the end of it all. I think people often forget the point that he was in love with her and she was in love with him. No matter how she influenced him, or what actions he decided to take, you definitely can't punish Yoko Ono for what happened, I think it would be even more of an argument to say that it was John's fault for everything that happened. But even that is I think a silly thing to say because, again he was in love with her, and obviously his relationship with her had a lot to do with the end of the beatles, but it's no one's fault it's just how his life played out. Also she came along at a time where the Beatles were increasingly becoming incompatible with each other creatively. If there was no Yoko ono, John likely would have found another way out not long after 1969 anyway. She was just the first reason big enough for him to prioritize over the Beatles. The Beatles were just so beloved, people think that anything other than the band playing forever until they're too old and retired, means that things played out the way they weren't supposed to. Like we strayed from the correct timeline and we're in some alternate universe where the Beatles broke up haha. It's just life. Also there's something nice about their catalog being fairly succinct and everything from start to finish being absolutely brilliant. Based on SOME of the solo records john, Paul and George all put out in the coming decades, maybe it was a good thing and they went their own ways. I would not want to live in the timeline where there were bad Beatles records haha. When the dynamics in a group gets stale, the music suffers. But as it is every record they put out is gold 😎.
Well okay... Maybe I wouldn't mind ONE OR TWO more albums lol

When Paul began calling her to check in on her and to get to know her after John's death, she was not gracious. Instead, her response was atrocious. Unfortunately she convinced Paul that he was treating her poorly. I will also never forget her refusal to have McCartney-Lennon as the credits on "Yesterday," which everyone knows John had nothing to do with. The way she treated Julian after John died was also horrible.

If what Paul says is accurate there, it certainly seems a very odd response to Paul's distinctly generous olive branch. It strikes me as a bit of a power game, at worst. Maybe it was too soon for her to accept olive branches from Paul, or maybe she'd lost patience with all the many millions who just came along with 'pity', so an interpretation on it would be her questioning Paul's sincerity in calling. How one would respond to that would be Paul's call. Tricky stuff.

Well beauty is the eye of the beholder, as they say, and many in the art world considered (and consider) her to be highly talented - as someone says here, her 'avant-garde' work obviously appealed to John, as did her obviously high intelligence. But his seeming obsession with her is admittedly a bit baffling. Part of it I think was that John, for all his genius, was immensely insecure and, much as he courted fame, also hated much of which came with it; the ebullient charisma was in many ways a 'shell' to mask an awful of psychological issues, and he came to believe Yoko could help him with all of these things (and much more). He certainly felt the overpowering nature of love ('for the first time' as it seemed). Moreover, musically speaking, Yoko became his new 'muse', without which, as Paul says, works like 'Imagine' could not have been written.

Sorry Paul, actually Cynthia was an incredibly strong woman to survive everything John put her through, in a very public and humiliating way. She raised her son to be a good man and she did it with grace and kindness. She wasn't hard, manipulative and an ice queen, that's the main difference between her and the other "strong" women in John's life.

Yeah totally agree with that - an odd thing to imply, and very harsh on Cynthia, who had all those qualities you say and more - the quiet dignity she showed after everything she had to put up with speaks volumes for her strength of character. That said, Paul probably is probably trying to imply that such a woman (sadly) wouldn't be the sort of person John would want, which for me says more about John than Cynthia.

And Paul made mistakes that hurt the band. The Magical Mystery Tour was his idea and it was the first time they were slammed by critics. Paul even had to apologize on tv for it. The Let It Be live album was a big mistake, mainly because Paul didn't tell everyone that he changed the plan. They show up in Jan expecting to rehearse for a live tv show of White Album music and Paul tells them that they will write a new album of 14 songs that month and play it live on tv at the end of the month. An impossible idea that could only end up in failure. Paul's management after Epstein died was poor, but not that surprising. He'd never done it before. The others were obviously getting tired of it. The only reason Abbey Road was successful was because they went back to the old way.

Very true ... in 1981 in San Francisco, as a young artist myself, I was walking thru the area where
it was known Ms.Ono had her apartment. Of course it seems silly now, but at the time I thought it a good idea to
walk by the building and see if I might run into her or something. The bland multi-story building she lived in
was fronted by a large concrete yard, surrounded by tall iron gates and fence. I had just walked into the courtyard, and it being
seemingly devoid of life, had the second thought about how embarrassing to self I was being, so I decided to lower my head and cut straight thru across the yard to the main outlet, as quickly as possible. Somehow, not more than a second later, humanity and other beings had returned to the yard.
It was only by reflex did I manage to catch the small woman and child I had just blindly plowed straight into. This is the part towards her character I wished to share here: As I spun her around keeping each of us on our feet, I saw exactly whom I had collided with. Yoko's beaming smiling face looking straight into my eyes. Seemed to be wearing head to toes black feathers, perfectly framing the face. She was with Sean I believe ... who was maybe 6-7 years at the time.
There are not many who would have had such a reaction, and with such peace as this all occurred. Especially when you remember
John had just been shot 6 months earlier in front of their NY apartment. I made sure she was okay, and after profoundly apologizing, to both of them, I quickly continued my egress and retreat, with head UP, EYES WIDE OPEN this time, finding myself very moved by her self-composure during such a potentially ugly situation. I didn't at the time, but Ms. Ono, thank you for being human and real.

It's always worth remembering, Paul and John were best mates, soulmates, due to a shared a love of songwriting when they first met all those years ago. Up to Yoko's appearance, that friendship had sustained everyone and the band for a VERY long time and beared all the fruit in the songs we know and love today. But it was always going to come to a point where it wasn't going to sustain the band anymore. Yoko was the first sign of that and nothing more.
When suddenly John's new love interest appeared on the scene, whom he required to have around ALL the time and be with all the time, it very much upset the applecart. As before her It would have mostly been Paul, George and Ringo that John hung around with most of the time. It's hardly surprising no-one else in the band knew what to do about that situation, or speak up about it, as they'd never had to before and as they were all four of them good working friends, no-one much wanted to be the one to pipe up and seem rude by saying, 'Ok look what's going on here then?'
It would have maybe been a better plan for John to have explained things a bit in hindsight, even if he'd known what to say which i doubt he would have. But I guess everyone was really used to not having to explain themselves to the other at any point. They all just did as they wanted to do, without question. Just up until that point, everyone else was always cool with what the other did, or wanted to do.
I suspect Paul didn't at the time completely realize it, but his position as John's soulmate was coming to an end and he had an inkling that due to it, the end of the band wasn't going to be that far away either. A situation that would get anyone frustrated in his position, it's not nice when things you love very much start drifting away from you and you can see it happening in front of your very eyes. It's scary and upsetting, when that's all you've known for as long as Paul had.
Much like as happens for most best mates, when one of them finds a girl/boy they fall for, that mate and everything else for that matter, goes out of the window, as love is really good at blinding you towards all around you, other than the one you love. John was departing the band, without really saying it or probably even realizing it and it's down to him mostly that the Beatles split, not Yoko, Paul, George or Ringo. But Like Paul said, 'You can't blame John for simply falling in love'

@@scopius2 They were very young -- Paul turned 30 in 1972, after the breakup, Ringo and John were each just a year or two older than he -- and back then, "passive aggressive" wasn't a term most people knew or used, especially not a bunch of working-class guys from Liverpool. Most people didn't have heart-to-heart talks back then, rarely sought therapists or therapy, it took the much-maligned personal development and self-help movements of the 70s and 80s to get people there. John was just breaking through the substance abuse and psychological issues he had when he was murdered. The album Double Fantasy reflects that change, and it's tragic that we didn't get more of his music, given the songs he recorded for that record. But before that? He was out in L.A. living the bad-boy life with May Pang (for whom I have a lot of sympathy, Yoko really manipulated both John and May Pang in that situation) until he decided to go back to Yoko. No deep psychological insights from him before that.
