    AWESOME!!! We all hate practicing as opposed to playing....and getting better will not happen until we DO practice. I'm an intermediate player that's finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. This is a GREAT video! I'm trying to practice 15 minutes and play until I'm tired of it each day. Doesn't always happen that way but I am improving. Thanks for your vids!

    Darrell, love your videos I find them very informative. I’ve been playing since I was 14 and when I was 30 I had a brain injury and had to relearn EVERYTHING. 10 years later I still can’t play half as well as I could when I was a teenager. I find your videos informative and they make me want to play more. I just finished watching your video on finger exercises, the problem is I have a very large hand and on a Strat, TELE, or Mustang with my index finger on the first fret I can reach the 7th fret no problem with my pinky finger. This is why I usually stick to my Les Pauls. Again I love your videos, keep up the great work. One final question. I loved your Les Paul guitar build and checked out Solo the company you used and am considering building my next guitar. I’m sure I can find this answer on the internet, but what is used as a finish on guitars to make them smooth and shiny? Thanks for the great videos, from a fellow Canadian.

    Been playing punk music for 11 years or so, when I taught myself to play I refused to alternate pick because I was insistent that it didn't sound right. Regardless, I really enjoy these exercises. Have to admit, the natural minor exercise took me a minute to get. These are great for a beginner or someone who's been playing for a while. Thanks!

  • @danmar007
    @danmar007 8 років тому

    Hey Darrell. I heard or read recently that the best practice exercises are playing things you want to learn. When I started playing in 1966 we just listened to the records and learned that way. Strangely it got easier and easier because you eventually learned where all the funny noises were on the fretboard. The music was simpler back then ! And my 14 year old fingers were stronger and nimbler! :-)

    • @DarrellBraunGuitar
      @DarrellBraunGuitar  8 років тому

      +danmar007 There is definitely some truth to that - anything to keep a person plying is always good.
      However, the chance of developing bad playing habits that may never be fixed is extremely high :)
      These exercises, while not very exciting, will help develope proper techniques that will enable players to play more advanced pieces :)

    • @danmar007
      @danmar007 8 років тому

      Tell me about it! It's certainly easier to get it right the first time than to try to fix it when you're tone deaf and stiff-fingered!

      Start up high on the neck where the frets are closed together. After a few days move them to the wider frets

    An important point is that once you have the stretches sitting down it doesn't necessarily mean you can manage them standing, as someone that's mostly a couch guitarist I find that when I'm standing big stretches in riffs I find easy become hard because my arm is in a different position!

    First, great channel and content, I've subscribed. Second, you mentioned doing a different finger exercise each day, but as a pure beginner (started learning March 1), should I pick an exercise and practice that longer before moving onto another one? How much time should I devote in my practice time to technique? I've been doing about 10 minutes at the beginning of my practices. Thanks for the great content!

    • @DarrellBraunGuitar
      @DarrellBraunGuitar  7 років тому +2

      +michaelhcheng@gmail.com Thanks for subscribing :)
      I would definitely recommend repetition at first before moving on. You can rotate through the first 4 as they are essentially the same exercise just re-organized.
      Once you feel decent at those, feel free to move on at your own pace :)
      5-10 minutes is perfect. If you stick with it over time you will notice huge improvement!
