0:00 - Intro
We're all beginners at some point. And there are many things on the guitar you can learn right from the beginning that will help avoid future roadblocks. Ayla Tesler-Mabe shares FOUR things she wishes she knew when she was a beginner guitarist.
0:58 - Tip 1: Practice Minor Pentatonic Scales
One scale worth knowing that you can immediately incorporate in your playing is the minor pentatonic scale. Ayla explains how to play them and how they can be moved around to use in any key.
4:34 - Tip 2: Practice Vibrato
Adding vibrato is like adding a layer of expression and overall takes your playing to a whole new level. Practicing this technique helps you find your voice on the instrument!
6:07 - Tip 3: Practice Major Scales
Playing major scales is a great exercise for dexterity, but more importantly, it helps you understand how the guitar is laid out. Ayla gives a quick lesson on what intervals are and how they apply to the major scales and the guitar.
10:44 - Tip 4: Practice Music
The main reason you picked up the guitar was to play music, right? Ayla’s final tip is to find a song you love that uses a technique you want to learn and learn it!

She is honestly the most friendly person i've ever seen on camera. She's a great teacher.
And a great player! Wow!
Good teacher
Its an art she has that makes her outstanding as she presents her art...
i bet she's great at other things too !
I'm hot for teacbwr
Honestly this lady is not just a teacher but a real mentor. Her way of explaining really is inspiring
Cos girl🙄
And she's 17???? Goodness gracious!!!
A++++
says the guy with the coolest last name on the whole entire internet.
She is a good guitarists
@@juana1483 what she's 17 ? What an amazing guitarist and humble person too.
I've been playing guitar for more than 20 years and I have to say this young lady gave the best tips for a beginner ever! Straight to the point, clean and easy.
Great videos, keep rocking! =)
Yes and weirdly I listen full to her video. Normally I lose interest.
@@anmoldhewaju8371 shes charming and charismatic thats why I guess
You are an excellent communicator. I started playing guitar when I was 15. I’m 52 now. I can play a decent rhythm and take a lead, but felt like I hit a roadblock a long, long time ago. Your videos inspire me to practice and improve. You are the best guitar teacher I ever had. Thank you.
Me too, I started to play long before the internet was around, it was learning from books, listening to records and lucky if you lived somewhere that there was access to a guitar teacher, I wish I had been able to see this video back then, it would have moved me forward in light years.
Ditto, me, Michael, only longer ago. Ayla inpires me, too.
What will come out of my mind and fingers, next ???
@eternal monstrosity you can learn from anyone regardless of their age. And I don't think she is a teenager. She's got a great teaching style.
@@kerishannon775 pretty sure she's like 21? when this video came out
As someone who’s taken many guitar lessons over the past 40 years, the advice for beginners in this video NAILED IT better than it had ever been presented to me, and I’ve had a few famous teachers.
I love how she supports and tries to teach beginners, instead of bashing people for being beginners 😩
My dad said the other day “Jimmy Hendrix didn’t just pick it up one day and start playing. He started from the bottom we all do”
What kind of asshole does that seriously?
I also noticed she doesn't say "easy" when talking about basics you need to learn. It's small but a nice gesture because some of this basic stuff can be hard for real beginners.
Very nice person. Easy to understand. And i love her guitar. Im irish... Nice.
You can play major or the minor of power chords .power 5ths heavy metal. Say in key of E. CAN PLAY MINOR AND MAJOR KEY OF E. Because power chords are not major or minor. A big help also is play licks mix a few licks together and chase chords. Play the notes in each chord. Lilke full barr G play them notes in licks over g.. When the progression changes like say next is A play the notes in that chord of A. Just use licks in them chord notes. Called chord chasing. Works great as as long as the changes arent too fast. But i preffer it over playing scales. Scales sound planned with no emotions or feelings.
Learned more about guitar playing in half-an-hour watching a few of Ayla's excellent videos than I have in 30 years of struggling to play. Best teacher EVER!
You need some water. You’re pretty thirsty.
Yep. Same here. What an awesome teacher.
Ayla is such a great human being. I've been watching her since the first guitar covers, then Calpurnia, then Ludic and now she's on her solo career and I wish the best of luck for her in the music scene. But she's a natural teacher, I hope she never stops enlightening us! ❤
I've 'owned' a guitar since I was a child...now in my 60's...always played chords...recently learned my Am pentatonic...and play along with backing tracks...whole new world opened up. Never thought I could play lead. That's what guitar is...learn...plateau...learn...plateau. Great video...thanks
That's awesome
Alright! I’m a decade behind... but I stopped playing for 25 years and now I’m back relearning.
@@GaveMeGrace1 Great to hear, me too! :-)
My guitar teacher made me name my notes outloud when playing sheet music.
That really helped me learn theory.
That's a great way to learn!
Start with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Write it out . Play it and name the notes.
Write a C scale. Play it and name the notes. Move up the neck . Play your scale and song in a different position.
Once you learn it,..write out Mary Had a Little Lamb. Learn it. Write a C scale on staff paper in a random order. Play it and name the notes. This will force you to look at the page and not the neck or pick or string. Write out chords and arpeggios. Play them and name the notes. At first its difficult but we learn it.
And we remember it. Then do it in key of G and F,..D and Bb,..ect.
Star Spangled Banner for me by ear, "Hendrix" style.. I'm still a novice & can't read a single note. Listen to what sounds right, cool & blends well. Still don't know theory but know a couple scales, power chords, hybrid chords, bends, pinch hormonics...
Every other instrument is a requirement to learn the notes. Guitar should be no different. Tabs are okay... especially when they are accurate and for learning complex things quickly
But as far as music theory and becoming a real guitar player...you're gonna want to learn the note names. It will do wonders for you when it all starts clicking and you're starting to understand intervals and inversions and all that goodness.
Learn em. There is some really clever tricks that exist in video format to help. It might seem daunting at first, but it's all patterns and gets easier the further you go.
@@sergedenovo2389 staff paper is a sheet of paper with lines so you can write out your own music.
we used to have to buy it but now you can print off of computer.
hope that helps !
a 10/10 from me - The way you calmly explain things, puts you leaps and bounds ahead of the pack..... I'm staggered that someone so young can be this good ....
I've been playing for over 10 years and am technically beyond these scales, but I never had the theory background. That interval exercise is a paradigm shift for me lol
3:35 Okay now I'm never forgetting this scale ever 😂😂. Also besides that, this has to be one of the most informative yet simple beginner guitar videos I've ever watched and having Ayla's warm energy is a plus.
yo, can I ask you something I just bought my guitar just a week back should I really be learning this its too vast?
Yes, you can learn what she's teaching from the get-go...
I started during the surf guitar era by watcing guitarists in bands
and trying to copy their playing. Essentially, they were doing what she,
Ayla, 17??? Is teaching and exploring ways to make those easy scales,
"their ideas and sound". You just have to practice and have fun.....
@@angeshbasnet1320 I think it's okay to have an idea even if you don't want to get into it fully yet, just watching the video, hearing the terms ..etc. That's what I do. But learning chords first, can't go wrong. Since you just got it (well 2 months too late to this reply sorry😂) I'd say just have fun for now. You can make your own pace. It's up to you :)
Me:
**already playing guitar for 9 years**
Also me seeing the title:
_Wow, interesting_
Haha same. 11 years here and I just came for the sick Duo-Sonic
Everything is beginning to make much more sense since I’ve started watching your videos. I cannot wait to implement this all! Thank you so much 🫶🏼
This is so helpful and clear and your attitude is so peaceful, calm and friendly. Thank you so much for this!
I really like how calm you are and the fact that you take your time showing everything. So many teachers on here start off slow then all of a sudden take off leaving you wondering “what did he just do? What? Wait, let me rewind.” I like your style, thank you!
Thank you, you are very gentle. I feel comfortable sharing your video with my granddaughter. I just bought her a guitar she is learning. God Bless You.
I've written this before. She was an amazing musician as a 14 year old and now she's also a fantastic, humble teacher just barely in her 20s. What a mitzvah it is that she has chosen to do this for us 😊❤🎼🎵🎶🎵🎸
I really appreciate your very laid back approach to teaching guitar. Also how you are able to breakdown complicated and/or confusing musical concepts and make them much easier to understand. Thank you and keep up the good work!!
I keep coming back to this video and it keeps making more and more sense as I learn guitar. Brava, Ayla! Thanks for teaching us.
Wow this girl is a great teacher. Most of the guitar teachers on UA-cam make everything too complicated. She explained everything so clearly and gave me some more ideas for my playing too. This is the way to teach!
I really agree. Some people I watch on YT and they go really deep into things. This is nice and simple!
I really enjoyed the way she explains everything, she has a great personality
That was honestly one of the most informative lessons I've seen so far. Thanks a bunch!
I really enjoy listening to the soft spoken down-to-earth way that you present your knowledge... No pretense, just sincere and simple helps and style that gives the beginner hope, that perhaps one day, they will be able to succeed in their attempt to master skills that at first seemed to be unreachable. I have watched many teachers as they try to convey their methods but so far, you have impressed me the most. Thank you!
Point four is actually the most important point for me as a guitar teacher right now. Finding songs for all kinds of things I want to teach. Chords, scales, strumming patterns, what have you. Everything should be connected to actual music imo. But that is a lot of work.
Also, Ayla, thanks for the tipp of saying the degrees out loud while playing a scale. That feels like a very valuable thing!
She is an amazing guitar teacher who makes guitar crystal clear and easy. Also a beautiful human being inside out. Love you Ayla! Keep posting please.
This brings tears to my eyes. Thanks a lot for this!
I just wanted to thank you for this video. I am 66, took up guitar again after 40 years. I have most of the basics down but never really learned the pentatonic scales. After watching this and how easy you explained it, I am getting better every day and have started to play lead . Thank you.
She is the real deal. A stunning talent that will only get better and better. Wonderful teacher too.
Ayla, you are so much wiser and thoughtful beyond your age! You have a unique gift in your ability to teach and communicate. Thank you so much for sharing your true appreciation and love of music. Stay well and continue to enjoy your passion!
What a talented teacher you are!!! Real pleasure to listen…
I've played the guitar for over half my life now and this video was still super useful to me. Really glad I found this channel!
i've been a (female) guitar player for a while now, and i've watched many many video lessons, which where always held by men. when i see you, i realize what i was missing all the time. it's so refreshing to see another woman on the guitar, it motivates me much much more to become better and practice more. thank you so much :-)

My discovery of the week : Ayla's golden teaching voice
Wow, you are an absolute inspiration. Keep up the superb tuition, Thank you x
Nice work Ayla and for breaking this particular lesson in such manageable bites. You style efforts are very must appreciated. Keep up the great work and happy New Year.
Ayla I love the fact that you don't have any "jump cuts" in your video. When you make an edit you cut to a close up or back to a wide shot. Just like the pros.
A natural educator. Wise and lovely.
Agree! She has a gift... actually three... or more...
Awesome presence and thank you for the learning experience
she’s my favorite teacher on youtube. she’s got such a great way of keeping me at ease and paying attention. i took a lot away from this and i feel like it’s really giving me direction and goals to work towards.
I think your authenticity is compelling. Gonna add these 4 skills in my training. Thanks 🙂
A fabulous video. I'm a complete beginner and it's just what I was looking for. Extremely clear and explanatory.
I just love how she anticipates questions that beginners have concerning different skills and takes the time to explain “in plain words” what’s needed. So articulate and incredibly helpful to me. Thank you for your work! I learned something today that no one has ever taught me about 3rds, 5ths, etc., intervals. Every other “teacher” just assumes you know already.
Such a kind and wonderful young lady. The way you teach is amazing. Very clear, informative, and you give great advice that’s actually very useful. I love learning through your videos, you’re the BEST teacher 🥰
Thank you for giving me hope to someday master this instrument, absolutely love your way of teaching and your generous tips and advice.
Love the way you teach. First time in 3 years i think i am starting to understand my guitar and love it even more. ❤
Thank you for this. I especially appreciated the tip about the intervals. Brilliant!
Thank you! That was so helpful. That really addressed a lot of the questions I had and confirmed some others.
Ayla is awesome!
I have finally found a channel with a mellow teacher that KNOWS what they need to teach! A real "down-to-earth" person!
Thanks, Ayla! 😀
I have visited so many teachers but.. honestly saying, this is one of the best lesson i've ever got.. It's just simple, well arranged and the presentation was magnificent. ..
I just love the call now overlay so much. That was cleaver. thank you, this has been great.
I have been a guitarist for many years and always trying to learn new things.Ayla is one of my favorite teachers on the internet I love her calm style of teaching.. Thank you so much!
This was really good explanation. The 3rd one I'm going to have to listen about 20 more times but great explanation on pentatonic scale and usage.
In 14 minutes she teached what a lot of guitar teachers can't explain even in months!! Congrats for such a nice instructional vid!
You are an awesome teacher, i have been trying to play and often discouraged from the books, you solved all of my guitar playing problems. Thank you!
You are so helpful and inspiring. I have an amazing personal instructor, and, you are so correct when you suggest using all the resources around me, especially UA-cam. I am making faster progress because I am learning so much more that hasn’t been introduced by my instructor in my weekly hourly lessons. Listening to you today has helped me more than I can express. Thank you.
I've been playing for many years, and I wish I’d had this knowledge you have shared way back then! I’m totally self taught, and it took me years to learn these things.. Excellent videos. And Jimi Hendrix was also a great influence on me too!
Hi Ayla. I just wanted to say I really love your videos. I am a beginner, 3 years now. I must admit I have not been very enthused about practicing scales. My idea has been to learn a song and eventually I will know the scales. Lately I have been learning "No More Tears". The solo is in 3 parts; a pre-solo and the main solo which is in two distinct parts. The pre-solo and the last part of the main solo were easy to learn as they followed a pattern. The first part of the main solo gave me a lot of trouble as I could not perceive a pattern.
Then I watched this video and realized that part of the solo was in D minor pentatonic. Once I realized that, then I could remember how the solo went, and even adlib a little as long as I stayed in that scale.
How humble and lovely, so detailed and warm, absolutely love your videos, a fantastic teacher!!
Love your teaching style. It works for me, and I am unteachable. Well done.
Super helpful. About the most helpful beginner tips I've found that I'm not already doing. What a unique perspective/ideas. Thank you, will be subscribing 🙌
So glad you found this helpful 😊
The perfect guitar for the month of Saint Patrick's Day! Why does it seem that these "kids" are often the best teachers? Ayla is a great talent as a player and as a teacher as well. Those two abilities do not always seem to go together with everyone who attempts to do both.
Love your light , smooth instruction so refreshing 👍🏻
What a pleasing, chill, and all around informative instructional video.
The note relation tip of the major scale was the most clear and concise explanation I've seen. Seriously, so many 'teachers' somehow find a way to make that so convoluted and complicated. Over the course of 2 min. you managed to present it in such a way that anyone watching that would simply react with 'AH HA'
Great video/advice! Love the quote "your favorite guitarist were once beginners" 🙏
im still blown away by minor pentatonic shape playng with a major chord video....
I adore the way you talk about guitar and learning. Liked and subbed. Thank you for taking the time to create the content
There's so much in this for a beginner and a very likeable style of presentation - thanks Ayla 😊
This is the first video I've seen where someone shows the scale at a slow speed. Now I know it. She's a good teacher.
Thank you for all the brilliant advice 😊 can't wait to start applying this to my playing now. Most appreciated. Thank you again!!! 🙏😇💖🌈
You're a great teacher. This video is very helpful. Thanks for sharing.
This video is so useful! Thanks for sharing!
You are an inspiration!......Thank you!
Ayla, I have been playing and performing for 57 years. I started teaching at age 19. You are the best of all the online instructors. What you teach is exactly the way I learned. I learned from other players I liked and I used their songs as my practice regimen. The other thing I learned from someone (I cannot remember who) is interval skipping. It made the Minor Pentatonic much more interesting. I would go from the 1 to the 5 or from the 4 to the 7, etc. I also learned that playing vibrato added emotion to the most simple patterns. I then learned that I could bend from the dominant 7th to the Root. For example in Ami Pentatonic, fret 8 (G on 2nd string) and a full bend to A (the same as fretting to 10 on the 2nd string). I realize you know this. What I intend to express is learning how to bend in the normal Minor Pentatonic took my playing to the next level. In other words, interval skipping and bending within the Minor Pentatonic took my playing from boring to interesting.
Loved the way you explained,
Always follow your guidance,
A gifted Teacher
Be Blessed🎸💖
Unbelievable how helpful this video was for me, thank you very much.
I've seen many teachers on line trying to teach basics and can honestly say this one is absolutely the best by far...her style is simple yet comprehensive at the same time...many new players will enjoy what they're playing much sooner thanks to these lessons...keep posting more lessons please! PS: you are beautiful!
I started learning parts of songs and that helped me later. You will get better if you practice, so stay inspired. If you like rock take some classical lessons. And if you like classical take some rock. Don’t be afraid to be well rounded. It doesn’t hurt to find a fabulous teacher like Ayla. Her point about intervals is huge. I used to play too fast. It’s better to play slow, especially when beginning. Try not to be overwhelmed by all the information out there. Relax and have fun. It’s tough being a beginner but hang in there.
As a beginner, I appreciate your words
I’m loving your videos!! You’re an absolute joy to watch.
Don't ever stop teaching you have a very special gift which not many people have I have been playing for years and this was so insightful thank you.
Lovely warm sympathetic young Lady with a voice that came straight out of Heaven I suppose and above all , very talented and a sublime guitar teacher!! deep respect greetings love and admiration from the Netherlands Europe.
I have been playing for almost 8 years, and the thing I regret the most not starting practicing from the beginning is ear training .
How do I practice ear training, I actually got down the beginning riff of breaking the law from it but that was too easy
Hi friends good scale ilove you veary nice scale
Yeah almost a lost art, so important
I've been playing guitar since 89 and I didn't get around to doing that until 99. I always played with people showing me, tablature, or sheet music, which is harder than tab but fun
@@user-ne6nz2lb6w I learned by just learning to tune my guitar by ear, it helps a lot. And playing with different tunings. Of
Great advise. Thank you!
just discovered you channel and besides the fact that you are a great guitar player, I love your energy so, so much. You seem soooo kind and I just know you vibrate in a high frequency. I love you, I gotta admit it. Thank you for existing!
She has such a pleasant demeanor. I thought it was a satire thing at first, but actually really enjoyable to watch.
Hey thanks for the tips. I´m 67 and have been playing guitar most of my life, I´m not very good but I get by. I did not know about the drop down three frets and you can play the same pattern but it becomes major instead. I feel I should have known that lol. Supercool and thanks again gonna try it when i play and record tonight. (Hmm I´m doing a cover of the Boxer with electric guitar, bas and drums and vocal. It starts out in C major but do have an a minor in it, wonder if it will work with that chord progression too. Well guess I´ll find out.)
It's kind of mind-blowing, right?! Have fun playing around with the chord progression. I'm sure the recording is going to turn out GREAT!
It only took me a couple milliseconds to hear that it works, thanks for a great tips
You’re an amazing guitar teacher, you’re so calm and very gentle!
Thank you so much! I just started learning guitar about a year ago and have watched hundreds of teaching videos and can truly say you are the best !!
You Rock !! 😊
Someone said she is friendly, but I see she having an impressive didactic, and knowledge
Hello from a 66 year old beginner, I just got my first electric guitar and never thought I would hold any guitar in my hands! But here we go I started and I like to say thank you for you very friendly and helpful tips, I shall try it out tonight, but I just wish my fingers were as flexible as yours ! Many thanks again
Intervals!!!!!! What a fantastic explanation! Thank you and I'll look forward to more from you!
Hey Ayla! Thanks for these great (and very helpful) tips!
Took me a long time to find a guitar teacher. I will never cut this class.
What do you wish YOU knew when you first started learning guitar?
How much time its take
How addicting it can be......in a very good way!.....:)
Literally what she just covered so eloquently!
Don't compare yourself to your favourite guitarists, measure yourself by how far you have progressed.
@@natinaeltalks64.5k8 Honestly, that's such a good point! But it's important to find what inspires you to keep on playing guitar so you can enjoy it every step of the way.
This is the best lesson I've found. Excellent!!
Unbeleivable in the few videos I’ve watched here how intelligently simplified and practical these were ! I’ve been playing for 30yrs and was just exploring how most videos are confusing for beginners and almost a black hole of useless complexity ! These are the best explanatory videos i’ve seen !
I practiced the pentatonic daily for like 10 minutes a day for 5-6 days straight and it straight up clicked and made my playing way better. So sick. Thanks a ton!
Thank you for Sharing this was one of the best videos I have watched.
Many thanks for such a great video. Very well explained and nice examples. Thankyou 😊🙏🏼
