That ending was hilarious lmao, i loved how MAB very aggressively denied Rob's denial of the fact that he acquired the keys to the lamborghini. "No way" "WAY" *aggressively yeets keys at Rob*
Rob, that one made me cry. I'm into guitar playing for 16 years, and seeing all of this made me remember my path with guitar and music. Thank you. You're a legend to me and a shredder, of course❤😎
I'm not sure if its intentional or not, but having the video examples in 4:3 makes it feel even MORE like you are watching these on limewire. Not only is this a great vid on how to shred, but also an explanation on how to self-learn before all of the secrets where common knowledge on the internet.
He's honestly such a relatable guitarist. He has the humility to show himself fucking up and he takes us through a genuine journey with how he describes learning and playing guitar
I always find how your style is this mix of Midwest Emo and shred so refreshing. Also ngl the whole time I was waiting for MAB to show up as you mentioned it in the mental health video. In addition I also enjoy you location shoot videos, but it's nice seeing you come back to this format as well.
thanks for just sharing "what's worked for you", not being like "HERE'S HOW TO SHRED, BUY MY COURSE BECUZ IM #1" lol and always worth a shout out to Troy Grady and cracking the code haha, those videos got me back into playing seriously after a long rut.
What did you expect, it's Rob Scallon, one of the most honest and humble YTers you can find, plus he's the real deal, guy's been doing this for more than a decade as he said himself. I remember when he'd mess around with Metallica songs, playing Sandman on acoustic and backwards, playing Anesthesia on an upright bass, other Maytallica content, his banjo covers and so on. Time sure flies.
with buckethead being my favorite guitarist, it's awesome too see how he directly influenced aspects of rob's playing (who i also love and been following for years). what an ending too lmao that was sick
Hi Rob, I'm a drummer and I've tried all of these techniques on my kit, I'm now shedding on the Tama flawlessly! Love your videos, songs and testimonies. Keep on shedding!! God bless
It's nice to see you doing guitar lessons again Rob, really cool stuff, also love the cameo _(and the song)_ with you and the *MAB* himself, that's really cool! ❤😁
I don’t know anyone who plays guitar. I’ve always wanted to learn and I recently got a guitar. Dude I’ve been sitting here for an hour with this video on repeat “playing” this stuff. It’s like everything has clicked. Seriously, thank you!!!
omg this is so awesome thanks rob, i've been combing through my watched videos for techniques ive seen in vids of your vids, ben levins, andrew huangs, maybe simons too... so that i can show my friends just how much we can all use our guitars in a jam session the hammer on and pull offs remind me of how in irish whistling we use fingering and ornamentations to help keep pace of rhythm and in place of more complex tonguing so that we can breathe out. and also so that notes we hold on for a while don't sound too harsh
I still listen to rain; it truly is majestic! Good to see you smiling again Rob been watching your content for well over 10yrs now struggled with my own mental health at limes and you always helped me find some peace in the chaos that can arise in my mind. Metal soothes my inner demons I guess, brought gas mask catalogue and learnt how to play chronosil. I love your work Rob, keep fighting the good fight and spreading joy.
I stopped playing guitar long time ago, however I still watch your channel, Rob, you are my light to the guitar world. 🙂 This video rocks pretty hard! 🤘🏻 Love it!
I've been playing guitar for decades and this video was impressive. interesting the way you hold the pick and get speed vs how I learned and still see videos that reinforce my potentially inferior pick position. time for me to rethink and unlearn some bad habits. subscribed!
The energy in this video really feels like Rob on 10. Insane ideas (Lamborghini, MAB), quirky in-line, a nostalgic review of the old Internet, shouting out a friend, actual tips for playing well, and an overall display of natural talent. You deserve to double your investment in this one at least!
I have been unintentionally pick slanting almost the entire 20 years of my guitar playing because I figured out early on it was the most efficient way to not get stuck in the gaps between strings. I always mention this to other players who I don't see do it. It's a great way to play faster. I also have a strange three finger grip I use on the pick with my thumb, pointer, and middle finger that works like a gimbal almost, it allows superior control over pick attack vs the traditional two finger grip.
One technique i found is great for learning any form of alternate picking is, you pick 3 strings and you start on the middle string, if you start with a down pick you move to the down sting and use an up pick now you have move back to the middle string and hit a down pick, from there you move to the upper string and hit an up pick, finally you down to the middle string to start the sequence all over again, the middle string is every picked every 1st and 3rd pick, this technique is used in bathory's a fine day to die for the intro and pre solo, its great for alternate picking it makes more spatially aware of you strings especially for playing fast, you're also picking out a power chord with the route note on the middle string, so you can strum that power chord too
Right on! You ARE shredding! I didn't really know any of this pick-slanting and escape picking were a thing until I saw Brandon Ellis on Troy Grady too.
I'm nowhere near his level of technique and musicality, but it's a relief to know he also struggles with sweep picking. I'm getting there and so can you, Rob (obviously)!
I KNEW I recognized that lick in FOO 2023. Awesome to finally see what Rob was working on! I'm still at the beginning of my journey with that type of playing.
Try using less pressure by picking at a shallower angle while sweep picking. I also hold it very loosely and I used to drop it constantly in the beginning. Also try using hammer ons and pull offs in places instead of picks when part of an arpeggio is on the same string. For example, I might pick the first note on the low E string, hammer on the next note on that string, sweep through to the high E string, then pick the final note of the arpeggio on that string (8 notes in total on a 6 string guitar), then I pick the first note of the next arpeggio on the high E string, pull off to the next note, sweep through to the low E string and pick the final note of that arpeggio (also 8 notes).
We missed you. We missed this I'm so sad life will end one day because moments like this won't be able to happen thanks rob cheers to your mental health!
what an awesome ending :D I love the inclusion of the songs you wrote after "unlocking" each new technique. we find inspiration and motivation in different places and times. those are priceless glimpses into an incredible journey
Unexpected lesson from you but I love it. I’ve been a… I guess you’d call it intermediate guitar player for a few years after playing piano for 20. Will definitely replay this many times and look up these terms
Love it man. It's easy to forget to explain things like this because we're so familiar with it already. But great on you for highlighting this stuff for the kiddos!!! These are the things we all wish we knew early on! Well, the secret's out kids, get to practicin'!!!!
I've been playing guitar and other string instruments for nearly 40 years. I'm well-versed in the first 5 and I was waiting for you to get to sweep picking because I've never been able to get my head around the technique. When you said that you couldn't do it, I was both relieved ... because here is someone who I would definitely consider a shredder who can't do it ... and also really disappointed because I wanted the explanation. LOL
xD I was waiting for the end of the video to go to the comments, because I figured MAB have something to say ('cause he's such a great guy and he'd love this content). I really didn't expect him to feature in the video!! Good job, guys. Inspiring the next generation of guitarists.
If anybody feels themselves hitting these walls when trying to get faster, the best thing I've discovered is to simplify it. "Chunking" is the term used for breaking the fast parts up into smaller pieces. Try getting just the first 2 notes up to speed, then add the 3rd. Only move on when you can comfortably play the first 3 up to speed, and so on. When I was learning to economy pick, I'd find myself getting stuck _constantly_ when trying to speed it up, and it stayed that way for years. Chunking allowed me to practice more efficiently, and you'll start to see progress measured in hours and days, instead of months or years.
😆Awesome video man! Good to see people having fun with music instead of a bunch of technobabble and general bull💩. MAB is a bad dude on the axe, I still show people (non players) his double guitar solos. I'm just an old bass player but I still like tips & tricks that can cross over to the low side. 🤘😝 Rock on Sir Rob, rock on.
Sick shredding and sicker MAB collabs aside, Cracking the Code is super mandatory viewing for anyone who wants to play a little faster. I am not a shredder either, but that approach to picking hand technique is really good to have in mind when approaching almost anything with a pick.
I think he got the keys to the Lamborghini
It really does feel that way
michael angelo batio moment
NO WAY! O.o
I think he's got way more keys than anyone needs.... And not just keyboards either. Mice too.

THE HAT IS BACK
Yeah i feel it fits with this style of video
Super 2010s rob scallon
As are the extra mouses and keyboards! (and their boxes, apparently)
Now we need more Sunday Uke Group
That ending was hilarious lmao, i loved how MAB very aggressively denied Rob's denial of the fact that he acquired the keys to the lamborghini.

love that you threw the Buckethead clip in there. Buckethead has to be the single biggest influence of my guitar career growing up.
love to see buckethead getting his flowers. truly a one of a kind artist.
He's honestly such a relatable guitarist. He has the humility to show himself fucking up and he takes us through a genuine journey with how he describes learning and playing guitar
MAB’s guilty look at breaking into Rob’s house was hysterical.

This video had me nostalgic for a very specific era of guitar youtube. Excellent.

okay that blew my mind aside from all the shredding Rob did
He's an amazing rollerblader, I believe he even has a video on it.
FR why is nobody talking about that grind?!?! 🔥🤌
The secret to shredding is lots of keyboards on your desk😄. Thanks for the video, mate.

ooooh this is why we got sick shredding in riff lord? I'm so glad, I love riff lord a lot 💜
There is only one Rift Lord young sir and his name is Tony Iommi.
And he is back!! Im so glad to see you back to form, rock on rob!! So an inspiration to me
love the throwback vibe to this video

as someone who wants to learn to shred, this video in genuinely helpful
buckethead mentioned makes this truly so epic
Watching Troy and Batio just before lockdown got me the keys after 3 decades of playing. I love the Michael segway.❤
Loving the Buckethead love.
Best ending ever !!! Nation is my favorite SHREDdER !!!! Of all times !!
I stopped playing guitar long time ago, however I still watch your channel, Rob, you are my light to the guitar world. 🙂
This video rocks pretty hard! 🤘🏻 Love it!
Great video. I met MAB years ago, and got to hang out pre-show at a small venue while he was getting ready. Such a cool guy.
I don't know why, but that outro/intro with MAB amuses me to no end. Awesome!
0:00 to 12:44 my favorite part

it feels so simple but complicated, love it especially the end🙏🔥
been following you for the full decade... love you Rob, in your good times and bad, take care!
Watched this on my tv, seen the epic intro. Paused it instantly to say that was easily the best thing I’ve seen this week lol.
You're such an entertaining guy yet talented and hard working one . Thanks your videos are on another level ❤
I've been playing for 4 years and could not tap with my right hand. This helped so much. Thank you, Rob.

It's funny that you say "rob on 10". If you watch his recent mental health video you'll see he was actually on at least 11"
@@Ticktok_of_Oz that’s what I was thinking about. I guess I was trying to be vague

omg it´s all beginners show off tricks but the how to hold the pick while tremolo playing - thing blew my mind haha thanks a lot :DDDD
Awesome video man. Love hearing these stories about your music journey. Wish more people would explain stuff like that about how they learned!
Fantastic video Rob! Loved the rollerblading ad as well. Very fun 😁!
Cool fact most people don't know but Angus Young picked each note in thunderstruck, it wasn't hammer ons and pull offs, like I used to think.
That was the best ending to any video ever. YOU SUMMONED MAB!
Right on! You ARE shredding! I didn't really know any of this pick-slanting and escape picking were a thing until I saw Brandon Ellis on Troy Grady too.
Love you Rob for showing respect to MAB the GOAT.
Hope you're feeling better. It took me 4 years to figure it out. Keep shredding brother!
10:03 I never thought I'd ever hear Rob playing "the Pop Tarts lick". It's amazing to see Troy's educational content reaching Rob and his audience.
I'm nowhere near his level of technique and musicality, but it's a relief to know he also struggles with sweep picking. I'm getting there and so can you, Rob (obviously)!

What a great video. This made my month! I really needed this.
03:07 thunderstruck is actually played without hammer-ons/pull-offs, all the notes are picked
On the studio version, live he does it with one hand.
@@topnug7626 maybe sometimes. The ones I've seen were all played with a pick

Oh my god, that ending... I wasn't expecting it... great video.
He’s back the legend it’s weird I learned how to tremolo pick from war ensemble by slayer too!
Wow that ending came out from nowhere, loved it!
Great video! Thanks. John Lee Hooker used finger flings.
I did not expect that ending and I absolutely love you for it xD
WAS NOT expecting that ending!!! HAHAHA!!!!! This is why you're my favorite guitar sensei!
