I'm a 74 year old beginner. Only learned about the pentatonic scales a couple months ago and have been practicing what you showed us in the beginning. I call myself old slow fingers. But one of the very first things I learned is that you can make real melodic sounds just by skipping around any of the scales. Bravo! Where were you and UA-cam 40 years ago when I started playing the guitar? It was such an overwhelming task to try to learn the 5 different pentatonic shapes and then just remember where the root was when you played in a different key! Needless to say I never mastered it. This is genius to only learn 2 shapes. Thank you and keep the lessons coming, please!

Hi Ayla. I stopped in to see this lesson, while doing a search and wanted to leave a comment. I have been playing for a long time and I also teach the guitar. I have been around some GREAT guitarists, because I used to do some agent work and set up concert events through my company back then, for people like Muriel Anderson, Stephen Bennett, Richard Smith, etc........so some great guitarists. There is a trick to teaching guitar and you have that knack. I just wanted to say good luck and I think people will really benefit by watching you, INCLUDING ME. I am always practicing to stay in shape. I am pretty old school, playing my own songs, as well as covering classic rock artists.

You are an excellent teacher coz you teach in such an easy to understand manner that’s non intimidating and it would encourage any amateur who’s trying to better themselves. Thank you, YOU DEFINITELY ROCK!!
Thanks for helping simplify and bringing down to one scale. I picked up the guitar at 53 and to be honest you have helped me push through problems better than any other person.
I have been playing for a long time and have had several bands. I do have to say that the teachers back then Never taught like you do. I thinks teachers back then made students give up the guitar. At 14 I was listening to Jimi Hendrix (My Favorite) and actually learned to play guitar from listening to him and then figuring the song out. I still have my 1968 Strat and several other guitars. One of the best, most insightful approaches to not only the pentatonic scale, but also actually unlocking the fretboard. Ive been playing for 30 years and this approach is brilliant. Thank you so much.
I respect what she’s saying, I’ve personally found just learning 3 note per string learning the major scale to be more eye opening. With that you also get all the modes related to the major scale, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, aeolian, Locrian, Ionian.
As a beginner that has been dabbling with pentatonic scales this approach is exactly what I needed to begin jamming or playing with other musicians. I would love to see a video on that topic. Thank you so much for sharing your insight!!
I've been working thru what you've shown in this video Ayla and I'm really finding it ingenious! It has really freed up my brain to jump from chord change to chord change. A big think you!

Congratulations. You are an excellent communicator and teacher. You are very talented , pretty and nice. Keep on helping people to master this beautiful instrument.😊
Your approach is very similar to the path I stumbled upon. Learn the pentatonic scale rooted on the E string. Then rooted on the A string. This makes the I, IV, V intervals simple to cover. Then learn the scale rooted on the D string. This lets you jump up an octave from your E string root to the D string root. Learning the pentatonic shape for G string gives you the IV and V for a D-rooted first. (I). I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else cover things in this manner, so you actually provided some reassurance that I’m on a useful path.
I've been playing for 39 years now ( I'm 51), and back in the day, when I was learning guitar, I taught myself alot of it by ear, had people show me stuff, and watched alot of videos (VHS, that is, if you can remember those lol). I don't know actually when I learned the name of the pentatonic scale, but that's mostly what I've been playing in for years and years. I watch these beginner videos to see if I missed something along the way, find a new way to play the scales, or learn new techniques. Thanks for UA-cam! Plus, I like the way you teach, break everything down, are calm, and take your time with it. Thanks Ayla, and Keep on ROCKIN' girl! ,🎼♥️🎸🤘😠🤘🎶
I 'm 56 year learning the guitar (based on the notes learnt at Key board), the pentatonic scale I learned a lot to create other pentatonic scales in guitar. Thank you very much.
Been doing exactly this for 20+ years and never been held back by it. Sometimes I throw in some 3 note modes but I only know a couple of positions for those as well. Surprisingly, it never really gets boring either. There’s always something to work on
I have to say with so many people teaching guitar on youtube , there exists everything from crap to solid teaching. You , my dear are very good at this.
This is so easy to watch and understand, I always usually feel so intimidated by guitar scales and music theory but this really puts me at ease and I absorb it much much better thank you
Just came across this and it is some of the best advice on Pentatonic scales on the web hands down simple instruction with huge benefits Good Job and thank you for this video!
I have played acoustic all my life(chording) and here I am at 79 deciding to learn the electric guitar. Chording it is easy, but using your method on the pentatonic scales is excellent and will help me do way more than just playing backup. But I do struggle with arthritis in my hands, so I will have to adjust a lot of things. But what you showed ACTUALLY works, even for an old codger like me. I only wish I had taken lessons when I was a a teenager. You have great teaching abilities. Thank you so very much.
Ayla is as they say "TOTALLY AWESOME" in her ability to teach, In watching her numerous videos it has opened this 65yr old eyes to new ways to play the guitar with her easy to understand examples. I never get overloaded with new concepts that she demonstrates in her videos. Rock on Ayla.....!!!!!
So easy to watch, listen to and learn. Always struggled with scales and just stuck to basic tablature because all the books I bought were so full of technical jargon it was off putting. This young lady makes sense and shows how to play it. I went to a guitar teacher years ago and he was frustrated with the tutorial books because he said as well that they weren't easy to comprehend
You have the best guitar videos on the internet. You also seem such an authentic, good soul that you are very easy to watch and follow. Please don't change a thing. Best wishes.
She is both a nuanced musician and an effective teacher. Guitareo has produced this well to be a good hang in a cool bedroom with a person who lives in a healthy zone. These are great videos and she's so wonderful and weirdly Canadian and cool. I really hope she gets to make all the music she's tapping in to. A positive vibe on a conflicted planet. Go forth, ATM! Kids have it so good these days with videos like this, this will help the planet one note and space at a time. Keep on keepin on.
Thanks for the lesson, I feel like this approach is exactly what I missed and I've overloaded my head with sliding up and down the fret board all the time and having to remember each scale shape!
What a great lesson. I love the way you explained music theory in a nutshell. I love your advice on becoming proficient with a little bit and knowing it well. My approach to the Am Pentatonic scale is doing exactly what you just displayed. I am learning more techniques and I feel confident in my ability to solo. With Teachers like you on the internet I have been blessed with hard earned talent. It takes time and practice. How much effort and time have you put into your guitar skills?
I have seen so many videos on the subject and this is the only one that has done a good job of explaining this in a way i could actually understand. Thank you!
You really are a good teacher. You explain things very clearly and easily. I really liked your analogy about the swimming pool. That's me stood on the edge watching the water. Now it's time to dive in! Thank you x

Me: 1:26 - Trick #1 - Know The Root Note Yes, I know this. 3:12 - Trick #2 - Add Musical Context And this. 5:12 - Trick #3 - Master One Part Of The Neck And this. 7:46 - 4th Position Pentatonic Scale And this. 9:46 - Transposing The Pentatonic Scale And this. 10:53 - Next Steps And this. 12:30 - Performance OMG! How did you do that! Sounds amazing!
There is so much useful information packed in this lesson that I have to take it in small bites... I mean the depths of what she is saying is profound to mastery of the fretboard. And this is just the beginning, folks... once you get this, and really comprehend what she is saying, provided you know what it takes to get you here.... You will catapult your abilities rapidly, especially if you are a beginner at this point, like I am... I'm 62, I know the major scales and the pentatonic scales. I know that B&C are next to each other, like E&F... I know chords... I know parts of songs. Never put anything together without this lesson... This if your first step to sounding like you have some skill. Practice this. Make your melodies from this... then expand... try to know every note you play... then you will realize why you are playing them... and how to get there. Thank you Ayla.

She knows what beginner is struggling with. She teaches “The root of Practice”
What a beautiful person and helpful video! I've had this saved for a while and finally want to practice with purpose again. Keep it up!
Been doing exactly this for 20+ years and never been held back by it. Sometimes I throw in some 3 note modes but I only know a couple of positions for those as well. Surprisingly, it never really gets boring either. There’s always something to work on
Your voice is really charming and disarming, really helps putting you in a good mindset for practicing things that can be a bit frustrating.
Thank you Ayla! You're great player & teacher!
Thank you for taking your time to do this video , a year into lockdown learning this gives me real hope .
Great lesson. Perhaps you could expand on embellishments, like bends, hammer-on/pull-offs etc. while soloing in the scales?
Thanks for the suggestion! And we're happy you enjoyed this lesson 😊
YES!!
Okay, I have a new guitar crush now🥺💙. Thank you so much for making pentatonic scale easy to understand
Agreed!! She’s so cool 😭
Pentatonic is like you can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!
Ha nice
as long as you have the pink Champagne on ice ...
Damn got the solo playing in my head rn
Tana nana naaaaaaahhhhh..tana na !
@@pratyushundertow tanananaaa tanana tauuunnn
i was watching this kind of vids before loving how she does this tutorials, now that i've finally got a guitar, i'd come back loving these
Here is my pentatonic scale teacher! Now every time I hear "pentatonic" I remember her.
You have the best guitar videos on the internet. You also seem such an authentic, good soul that you are very easy to watch and follow. Please don't change a thing. Best wishes.
Brilliant as always! Thanks for this.
Your modest disposition makes you a really effective teacher .
This lesson is excellent !
This had summarize years of my practice .. I can play pretty much whatever tab I have in front but can not improvise well … you are the best !
Such a charismatic and easy-going teacher. Loving your content, keep it up!
Excellent instruction and very impressive playing, wow.
Thanks Ayla! Could you make a lesson on following chord changes while soloing?
Great suggestion. A practical, slow demo on how to negotiate bars when transitioning. Use of simple 145 in a common key like A or C.
Thank you!
Ayla you are inspiration for me, you are the reason I’m going to play guitar love ya keep going💗🎸
A lesson well worth watching. She has a great sense of humor!! Quote"there's really no right way to approach anything in life"
I love this girl..... She is a damn good teacher
You really are a good teacher. You explain things very clearly and easily. I really liked your analogy about the swimming pool. That's me stood on the edge watching the water. Now it's time to dive in! Thank you x
This was a really great wee lesson! Appreciate you putting your time and effort into it.:)
Have subscribed and will look at your other videos when I have a chance!
Thanks again!
I have been playing for over 30 years and you still taught me something I didn't know. Thanks for what you do.
She’s the reason why I love this channel.
Brilliant lesson. Connecting the root note on the A string and being able to play a shape knowing that has unlocked the fretboard for me, Thanks!
You Canadians always seem so nice.
Thanks. You explained it very well. Good advise and instructions. You made it easier to understand
If you haven’t already, watch her cover of “since I’ve been loving you” she’s a true prodigy
Ayla is my favorite!! This is my first week on the guitar and I didn't know what to learn first but this is so so helpful! I got it down in an hour and now im trying to sound better and I am having a blast! THank you!
hows it been going?
When l started playing pentatonic lead about 40 years ago l soon realised that l was 'talking' and the root note was the 'subject' of my speech...
Pardon sir, would you rather have two 1976 Ford Broncos or three 76 Chev blazers?? this is id test for the motor city madman :)
@@gregkunkel8704 Haha Broncos all the way..
Holy.... . Mr Nugent himself... We're not worthy... 😎👍👍😎
@@bryandalley35 Haha not the real Ted mate just a fan using his name to remain anonymous...
Absolutely agree 👍
You are a breath of fresh air. Really enjoyed the lesson, thank you
