So when I hear the 3 versions of this song that are mentioned, I hear them each differently. Simon & Garfunkel was like a warning we needed to hear, Disturbed version is like the anger & sadness that we didn't listen to the warning, & PTX version is full of hope that maybe now we will finally listen.
This. They are all great versions, just different. So which you prefer depends on your taste (or even mood). There is no "better" version, so to speak.
@Rebecca Exactly!!!!!! That's why I love covers & creative artists like PTX who reinterpret songs so that we are able to hear them in different times/situations & in different ways. Also songs that maybe have lyrics you've not paid attention to because the music surrounding it was just....meh....or not appealing to your ears......are sometimes transformed from being songs you turn off, into songs you play on repeat, once covered...or upgraded lol.
Exactly how I explain the 3 versions!
Great summary!
Her name is Kirsten. Matt is the Bass, Scott is the Baritone, Mitch is the Tenor and Kevin is the Beat Boxer and also a Tenor.
If you find it difficult to believe that it’s all vocals, try their Daft Punk medley, it’s so mind blowing that they won a grammy for it.
The woman is Kirsten (Kirsty rhymes with "thirsty") Maldanado.
This version NEVER fails to give me goosebumps. Completely amazing.
If you don't want to be angry at society (Disturbed) but want to be hopeful that the warning (S&G)will be heeded (Pentatonix), this is the version to listen to.
Paul Simon is a GENIUS !!!!!
Wow when she hit the "like silent raindrops fell" I swear I heard a Dolly Parton sounding note...whole song is brilliant.
Their collaboration with Dolly Parton singing "Jolene" is excellent!
And a Grammy winner!
@@Badger77722 Forgot to mention that.
Pentatonix is the pinnacle of a cappella
The Prayer & hallelujah.
Kirsten's performance stood out because when this was made, she had just finished a stint on Broadway in the play "Kinky Boots." She had received some vocal coaching to help her "belt" (project acoustically) better. You either knew and didn't comment, or just didn't notice that Avi was not in this video, but the new bass singer Matt was. It was part of an amicable split due to Avi's family issues. In 2017, Avi left and Matt stepped in. Avi's operatic bass was gone but Matt's lyric bass moved right in without much of a problem.
If you haven't done Imagine yet, please do! I also love La La Latch, a medley of 2 songs, that are incredible! it's my favorite video with Avi Kaplin in it. This one is my favorite with Matt as the bass singer. His voice is so full of soul and emotion. His personality is joyful and so positive. He had huge shoes to fill when Avi left, and he's done so masterfully!
You are so right. Each version is interpreted in their almost different meanings. I mean come on! PTX has 20 million subscribers, 5.5 Billion views and 3 Grammy awards. For an A cappella group! Unreal! They are the best by far of them all.
Pentatonix is the Premier Acapella Group, they don't do covers, they do "upgrades". Check out their first Grammy Win, "Daft Punk" you will be blown away. They do all varieties of music, check out their cover of "Gold" by Kiara or their cover of "Can you feel the love tonight" by Elton John. "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Imagine". If you do a live, watch the Official Video for that song first.
Just FYI - Pentatonix has LOTS of amazing originals, too! 💖
Yes, they do. I suggest they check out their original "Love Again"; I think they would love it.
The girls name is kirstin that's how its spelled but people say kierstin, it's said like kur sten, she also is called kirstie "rhymes with thirsty" by alot of people and fans. Glad she got some love in this she has been over looked so much, so im glad yall pointed it out.
The "doo doo doo" going on between verses are usually referred to as bell tones (sometimes bell notes). You'll find it used in many a cappella groups (especially high school/college age), and it's used quite a bit by Pentatonix - remember, when PTX started, they were all college age (except for Mitch, who missed his high school graduation to appear on The Sing-Off TV show in 2011).
Great reaction, this is the only version that ever made me tear up. Interesting fact, Darkness was a nickname for AG, given by a friend who had gone blind while they were in college. He would say that when he was speaking to AG that the darkness has a friendly voice, so it’s less scary.
I am glad you enjoy Pentatonix, they are so great!👍 I suggest that you do Pentatonix's song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from the Disney movie, "The Lion King". This song was originally done by Elton John.🤙
I love all three versions for different reasons --- PTX always has my heart - Great Reaction!!
!!YAY!! it's here. Hey B&B, loves the reaction. 90's Dance Medley when you can please. Bye now
Kirsty has the sweetest voice that is the best ear candy of all, so clear so high and sooo good!!
Tall blonde: Scott Hoying
Mullet: Mitch Grassi
Woman: Kirstie or Kirstin
White Jacket: Matt Sallee (joined in 2017 after original bass left)
Beatboxer: Kevin Olusola
If you guys really enjoy this version by Pentatonix, and who doesn't ....check out The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Mary did you know?, Havana, Daft Punk medley and more
In this song, the first and last verses were sung primarily by Scott Hoying, the tall blond guy. Scott is a lyric baritone. His lowest notes are well into the bass range and his highest notes are well into the tenor range, with an excellent falsetto on top of that. I believe he has a range of 5 or 6 octaves.
The second verse was sung by Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves and seems to move between his chest voice, head voice, and falsetto effortlessly.
The third verse was sung by Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. Matt joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it) after their original bass, Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan left, for personal reasons. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it appears to still be growing. Judging by what I heard from him at their Denver concert on November 20, 2022, it appears that Matt's lowest notes are true basso profundo low - low enough to blow out speakers if the singer isn't careful - while his highest notes are near the top of the tenor range.
The fourth verse was sung by Kirstin (also known as Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Kirstin is considered to be a mezzo soprano because that's her preferred range. Her actual range extends from the low end of alto (though not contralto, which is more like a baritone range) through the high end of coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range. And she has wonderful whistle notes on top of that. If you want to hear what Kirstin can really do I recommend their -cover- upgrade of "Seasons of Love."
The beatboxer is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable. Kevin is a tenor, though he sometimes gets down to the high end of the baritone range. He's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He has perfect pitch, and was classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello as a child. He performed at Carnegie Hall twice as a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique that he refers to as "celloboxing." He has a pre-med degree from Yale and speaks five languages: English, German, Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole world seem brighter. I recommend his KOver of Marian Hill's "Down": ua-cam.com/video/IGjg193h4Ok/v-deo.html and "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth": ua-cam.com/video/DbCasvcNx78/v-deo.html .
Loved your analysis for the three version, being a Pentaholic they will always be at the top, try listening to "Run To You", "Shallow", "Say Something", New Rules x Are You That Somebody" and the list goes on. Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole.
All of the really great a cappella groups have DEEP rabbit holes of their own. I strongly urge you to listen to Voice Play soon. ANYTHING they do. You've hit Home Free and PTX... now for Voice Play and another (since the mention of Disney seemed to get a big smile)... Voctave. For Disney stuff, I think Voctave is at least tied with Voice Play... but they are very different. Maybe a discussion for another day. Many folks think Voice Play does catchy show tunes and Disney... until they hear them sing "Nothing Else Matters. Yes... heavy metal by an a cappella group. Anyway, the a cappella journey can be brief or lifelong... it all depends on your ear and your preferences. I personally love all a cappella (unless it's out of tune). I say that the very BEST a cappella group is the one I'm listening to. 😊 Your reactions (I've watched a few now) are good, and getting even better! Liked and subscribed. Keep up the great stuff!
Pentatonix has so many absolute gems. One of my favs by them is 90's medley. WILL BLOW YOUR MINDS.....TRUST ME!!
They are so awesome. I could listen to them all day. Please keep reacting to them. You should do "Imagine" next.
Thank you for the great reaction to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Glad that you both liked it. They are incredible.
Pentatonix is amazing
The lady's name is Kirsten "Kirstie".
Great reaction. I'd also recommend reacting to their Sing Off performances.
There is so many people singing that sound of silence. I love everyone 1 of Them. It's my favorite songs thank you.😊😊
Pentatonix brought me here, yall kept me here! Nee subscriber!!
Thx for coming along with us!
the power that builds in this version is amazing
Just tripped over this reaction - very nice! I'm kind of shocked that no one gave you the huge info dump of Pentatonix facts. I'll do my best. In order of solos:
Scott Hoying, a baritone with a huge range, often leads and often sings as a tenor - tremendous stage presence (6 ft 3"!) and vocal power.
Mitch Grassi, tenor/countertenor, amazing upper register and fantastic control, frequently takes what would be the alto part in most groups, also capable of hitting soprano.
Matt Sallee, baritone/bass - the newest member of the group but has already been with them going on 6 years, warm mellow voice and buoyant, genial personality.
Kirstin Maldonado, mezzo soprano, possesses a voice of many colors, from plaintive sadness to Disney princess to a huge Broadway belt.
And last but not least, the brilliant Kevin Olusola (say O'LOO-shuh-luh), beatboxer, cellist, and tenor with a very sweet falsetto.
Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch grew up together in Arlington, TX (a Dallas suburb), taking part in community youth theater and later attending the same high school, where they were in choir, show choir, and so on. They also sang together as The Trio in talent shows. Shortly after Scott and Kirstin graduated and headed to uni, the group decided to enter the TV a capella competition show The Sing-Off, but they discovered that they'd need at least 5 people. A young choral arranger named Ben Bram, whom Scott had met in college, suggested that a vocal bass and a beatboxer would anchor their harmonies and enhance the group's appeal. Avi Kaplan was recommended as the bass, and Kevin was discovered in a viral UA-cam video in which he was "celloboxing" - playing the cello while beatboxing. The newly formed quintet, named for the pentatonic scale, won the competition. You can find the competition episodes starring Pentatonix online, and some reactors eventually decide to watch all of them.
After their original recording contract fell through, the group took to UA-cam and attracted a large following, which enabled them to get a better contract. They became one of the most hard-working groups in show business, arranging, touring, and recording non-stop (often both at once, with a mobile recording studio towed behind a gear truck). In an interview online, arranger Ben Bram (who still works with them) tells of driving the tour bus for the first tour or two! The stress of this lifestyle got to Avi, and when his mother became gravely ill on top of that, he left the group. Matt came on at the very end of 2017 and was official as a member of the group early in 2018. That is the only personnel change in going on 12 years together, although Mitch and Kirstin's frequent changes to their looks sometimes confuses people, who assume that the group has new members.
Enjoy! Other popular videos to check out by them include: [with Avi] Daft Punk (a medley that won a Grammy for best arrangement), Bohemian Rhapsody, Say Something, Can't Hold Us, Imagine, and the Popspring 2016 Concert; [with Matt] New Rules x Are You That Somebody?, Amazing Grace, Shallow, 90s Dance Medley, Come Along, and SO MANY Christmas songs and carols, the most famous of which (and deservedly so) is Mary Did You Know?
Their singing says it all!!!
PTX doesn't do covers... They only do upgrades!
The G.O.A.T. of acapella groups!!!!
Pentatonix's record label, RCA, is notorious for getting reaction videos blocked. Sometimes stopping the song frequently so you can insert your comments is enough to prevent it, but the most reliable protection seems to be blurring the video somehow. A translucent "COPYRIGHT" or "PENTATONIX" overlaid on the video is probably the easiest way to manage it.
I am a senior Aussie, and PTX just blows me away. There must be at least 3 key changes in this arrangement, but they just nail everything. I miss Ari, but can't complain about this offering. Check out their cover of Bohemian Rapsody. Breathtaking!
Glad u guys are doing more PTX
My first Pentatonix song was this one. Watched a ton of reactions to it and the most frequent comment I hear from Pentatonix fans when they first see this is "Mitch has a mullet?"
And speaking of Disney covers, one of the most "fire" you'll hear is Jonathan Young's "Hellfire". He's literally the grown-up Broadway version of Frollo. Great vocalist with a ton of original and covers.
Home free - LOVE THEM !!!!°
Great reaction. You guys are one of my favorites!!!! Her name is Kirstie. Please continue reacting to them. You will be glad you did. Superfruit also!
The beatboxer Kevin graduated Yale and plays the cello, piano and trumpet. He also sings tenor
You have to listen to MARY DID YOU KNOW by PENTATONIX
Yes, Joseph! How could I forget "Mary Did You Know"! Such a beautiful song!🙌
This is my favorite version.
Perfection
Great reaction love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
I see the same comments over and over but at the time S&G version was considered a very gentle hippy anti war anthem, not at all a warning. It was written by Paul Simon but it was for Art Garfunkle's friend who suddenly went blind while they were at Columbia.
LOOK OUT! !!!
You are about to be inundated by the Pentaholics. We are the devoted Pentatonix fans and we always love welcoming new people into our world, and to help guide them down this very deep rabbit hole. 😘 You've now found the elite of the a cappella world. PTX is the first, and so far only, a cappella group to win a grammy. They have three. In many ways, PTX has revolutionized how a cappella music is seen. For so long, it was kind of the bastard stepchild of the musical world. Now, people are finally taking is seriously as the truly amazing art form that it is.
So, from left to right in this video. First is Matt Sallee, who is their base singer. Then Kirstin Maldonado, who sings mezzo-soprano. In the middle is Scott Hoying, baritone who steps in as base when Matt is singing. The next is Mitch Grassi, who is a counter-tenor, meaning he can sing up into the soprano range. As you delve deeper into PTX you will find yourself utterly blown away by what Mitch can do. We call it being Mitch-slapped, and we all love a good Mitch-slap. Last, but DEFINITELY not least, is the hidden gem of the group. Keven Olusola, or KO, is their beatboxer. He also sings tenor, plays the cello, is a music producer, and can seriously rock it with live looping. They have been together for more than 12 years. However, when you go back to their earlier videos Matt isn't there. Their original base was Avi Kaplan, who left the group amicably in 2017 due to family and health reasons. We deeply miss Avi, but we love Matt too. Avi now has a solo career. KO recently came out with this first solo album. And Mitch and Scott sing as a duo under the name of Superfruit. Kirstin does have a few solo songs out as well.
You should really go back and see 'Daft Punk', which is the song they won their first grammy for. Then you should see their other two grammy winners. Dolly Parton actually approached them wanting to do an a cappella rendition of her song 'Jolene'. They shared a grammy with her for that one. Then they got a third grammy for their arrangement of 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy'. Yes, they got a grammy for an a cappella version of an instrumental song. If it wasn't PTX, you wouldn't believe it.
I don’t know if you noticed. The video for ‘Hallelujah’ had a man with long hair and a beard. That was Avi Kaplan, who was the original bass for Pentatonix. He left in 2017 for personal reasons. Matt Sallee (man in the white jacket) is their current bass.
Masterful
Their Bell Chords are always magical.I haven't heard a bad version of this song yet. Paul Simon is an amazing song writer. Kirstie (sounds like Thirsty) Maldonado is the Power source when they need it.
Recommendation: My Favotie Things. It is under reacted to but in my opinion one of the best covers they ever did. One of the all time classic songs with a Pentatonix twist you wont see coming but will love. Think Sound of Music meets Tim Burton.
I agree with your assessment on this. Ptx did such a fantastic arrangement of this in acapella featuring multiple vocalists.
And disturbed did great individual emotional work as well.
Both can be true.
I'd just purchase pentatonix recording on what I would buy.
Great job with your reaction to The Cover of Sound of Silence done by Pentatonix.
Check out "Creep" next with Pentatonix! The best cover of that song EVER!!!! So incredible!
You two should check out Naturally 7 performing phil Collins In the Air tonight! 7 guys that musically are the instruments in song.... but they only use their voices! Pretty amazing! My wife and I caught them open for Michael Buble and we were totally blown away! If you closed your eyes you thought it was a full band! But when you open them it was just 7 men sitting on barstools!!
They could do electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards!!
Really cool group
You have to check out Mary did you know, bohemian rhapsody, mad world, imagine and many more. Also Home Free sea shanty medley. Your fun from Greece.
Love Again! It’s my favorite from PRX
Can’t wait for you to check out Voiceplay! ❤
Sub'd. Keep it rolling.
It’s funny. You are “Bars” and she is “Barbelles”. The transitions that you really like, in musical terms, are called “Belltones.” That put a smile on my face. Great reaction! I’m going to check to see if you’ve done more of Pentatonix.
and for an other one, sound of silence cover by Henk Poort on " Beste Zangers " 2019, sang for Floor Jansen Nightwish
I’m definitely a big PTX fan but Disturbed is in my blood. 😂 David Draiman is a brilliant singer & being in the pit was a rush. But PTX is a close second.
Brooks and Dunn. You don't know me cover of old ray Charles song. Beautiful
So if you want a 4th version, you should try Peter Hollens ft. Tim Foust/.
A musica é linda e eles ssão ótimos ,tank you..
VoicePlay is great! Geoff Castellucci (the base in Voice Play) did a solo of Sound of Silence that is AMAZING! so many great things to check out!
Notice that this is a cover of Disturbed's cover of Simon & Garfunkel's original. Most covers post 2016 are Disturbed version covers
Two words: Home Free - after you finish pentatonix and voiceplay - they are more a country acapella group, but they are very, very good. I'd recommend you start with Man of Constant Sorrow, or End of the Road, or hillbilly bone?
We already have Home Free on the channel!
ua-cam.com/video/0m9WdJyHy-k/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/8S08t8ETRxI/v-deo.html
Welcome to going down the accapella PTX rabbit hole. There are at least 30 songs that they knock out of the park. They do mostly cover songs but if you want a original check out Sing. Upbeat feal good stuff, but when they say cut at the end keep going. You'll love it!
Forestella does an awesome rendition of Sound of Silence and Bohemian Rhapsody
All there songs are awesome please do the prayer and imagine
SME (sony) is pretty rough with the copyright blocking, but you can try using visual filters/blocking text/opacity changes to help get past as its "usually" the video that triggers the block the most. Enjoy the journey :) (and its ok to stop and give critique/reaction, as long as you go back like 5 secs to get back into the flow, which you did so thats great!)
PTX 🔥❤️🙌
Love you guys reactions.
You're one of my favorite reactors.
I think lion kings.
Can you feel the love tonight?
Would be great for you?
I'm sure you'd really like it. By the way this is a pentatonic's cover..😂
Her name is Kirsten Maldanado...!
I recommend that you listed to Shelly Fraley "Seize the Day"
Im so old school i really like the one from simon & Garfunkel
Simon and Garfunkel = A Warning
Disturbed = You Didn't Listen see what happened
PTX = Don't worry there is still hope
I would like to recommend "White Bird" by It's a Beautiful Day.
HER NAME IS KIRSTEN
I’m sure you know that Simon and Garfunkel are the writers and is the original version, I love the original, Disturbed and Pentatonix definitely nailed this cover
PTX is one of the top three acapella groups along with Home Free and Voice Play. Great reaction for this fantastic performance. Love how you guys do it. OBTW, Voice Play does some mean rock songs... I recommend their cover of Aerosmith's Dream On. Please check out some more acapella.
Oh and by the way if you want to hear Kirsty really show her range check out Amazing Grace. She goes higher like 5 times, it's insane!
Recommend their cover of The Prayer.
This is so much better than the Disturbed version.
If you are looking for a cappella groups you should try Citizen Queen. Their older stuff is really good. No tears left to cry, Never Enough, Don’t call me Angel also Killing me Softly.
Check out their version of Bohemian Rhapsody. You won't believe what you're hearing.
Artists that have this much clarity should NEVER be controlled who are they to tell the world what we should listen to. Its media control.the government should never have control over US. We are humans noone should TELL US who we love. Decide are we free .,???i am a pic from Scotland 🏴☠️
Lol🤗🏴☠️
L
If you can check out home frees version on end of the road they are another acapella group
Try out Pentatonix 'Daft Punk', Bohemian Rhapsody', and "Amazing Grace' for a couple of your next Pentatonix reviews. You'll see some super beatboxing in 'Daft Punk'.
Then maybe the Home Free "Butts" song.
Voiceplay is really good to indeed. Especially with spooky season. Like "kidnap mr sandyclaws" or "hide and seek".
Ptx is mostly christmas and pophits.. voiceplay more theatrical.. if you like countrymusic. Check homefree.. especially "butts"😂
I really can't pick a favorite version, between the 3 that you have done. They are all unique, and it's a classic, amazing song. If I absolutely had to choose, I think I'd have t lean towards Disturbed. But I think, depending on my mood, I could pick a different one, on a different night. You know?
Scott, Mitch, Kevin, Matt And Ms. Kirstie
To get around the copyright with Pentatonix, you should try putting an opaque cover over the video that somewhat obscures it. Seems to help with other reactors. Enjoyed your reaction.
