Fun fact. This video was made on a real street outdoors overnight. It had to be finished before the sun came up. At some times you can see the mist coming off their breath because it was cold out as well.
My favorite part is from beginning to end lol The more obscure details are the shooting stars represent queen members and the stars honor guitarist Dr Brian Mays having a PhD in astrophysics. Not only are they talented for obvious reasons but their attention to detail is *chefs kiss*
Their name is also a play on the Pentatonic scale. A pentatonic scale is a musical scale with five notes per octave, in contrast to the heptatonic scale, which has seven notes per octave. I like both groups for sure but its hard to deny ptx of the 3 grammys the walk of fame star they earned and also having 20 million subscribers with almost 7 billion channel views
So that means you think Justin Bieber is obviously better than them? Popular is not always better. I love PTX. I love Home Free. Its not a competition.
@@blitzofchaosgaming6737 this is just a horrible reply i never said they were better just saying its hard to deny the facts and popularity doesn't go to every group/artist for 0 reason and even if people do get lucky with growing when they arent that good that popularity does not last they have kept the popularity for a decade plus
I agree that it’s fun to see what everyone is doing - for me, it’s most mind blowing to watch everyone except the one singing the lead, to see what they are doing together to create the background. “Evolution of Beyoncé” and “Evolution of Michael Jackson” are great for this, the official videos are live takes but they’re just singing directly to the camera, so you can really see what everyone is doing
Pentatonix are really who got acapella popular. There are a lot of acapella groups. But in my book and many others, Pentatonix without a doubt, are absolutely the best, and have an unbelievable amount of material. I haven't heard one song they've done or covered, that I haven't liked as much or better than the original.
I will tell you from the start that this is my favorite from PTX. I was also a huge fan of Queen, growing up as I did in their seventies. I was also a fan of Fleetwood Mac and Dr Hook. In my opinion, Mitch was the perfect choice for the Freddie Mercury part. His vocal stylings were perfect for an homage to the late great Freddie Mercury. Just by way of preparation, and this is a spoiler alert, there's something that's going to happen on this couch that one of the other Pentaholics referred to most aptly as a "cuddle puddle". I mention this because of certain observations. The three Mitch, Scott, and Kristen all fall in a heap in the middle of the couch. They're from Texas, located in the middle of the country. When they were considering trying out for SingOff, they were informed that they would need at least five members. Bram, the guy they spoke with at the program, found Avi in California. I mention this because if you watch the puddle, Avi stretches himself across the "West Coast" sofa arm. They found, I believe it was Scott, Kevin on a UA-cam video doing his beatboxing and playing cello. He's from the East coast, havinggraduatedfrom Yale. If you watch, he's stretched out on the "East Coast" sofa arm. Then the five return to their original positions as they were at the start of the video. For the record, Avi was your bass guitar and wind machine, Mitch was the Electric Guitar, obviously (and the megaphone was a prop which you can discover if you watch the live version of this song), and Kevin is a full drum kit including cymbals and high hats and anything else percussion you might want to toss in. Scott and Kirstie were ",just" vocals here,as if "just" could do justice to what these folks can make their voices do.
I noticed you smiling at the audio panning on "little high, little low." Good; I'm glad you noticed it (this is one of the advantages of listening with headphones). The panning was a direct quote from the original release by Queen; they did the same thing. It just goes to show how much attention Pentatonix pays to detail. Pentatonix loves Queen, and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they always wanted to cover this song, but they were afraid that they couldn't do it justice, which would have been a tragedy, so they decided to wait until they thought they were ready. That took five years, but it was worth the wait. They were definitely ready. I know of two reasons for the couch to move: 1. During the early days of Pentatonix, after they lost that first recording contract just a week after they'd "won" it on _The Sing-Off,_ Pentatonix was recording themselves with their iPhones and self-publishing to UA-cam. A lot of those early videos show them on a couch, the trio sitting on the back of the couch with Avi and Kevin sitting in front of, five very young people singing their hearts out to make their dream come true. This couch needed to move in order to take them on a trip down Memory Lane. 2. Probably the more important reason the couch moves is that it's standing in for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole generation to the genius of Queen by sticking a tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" into the car's tape player. Queen's rendition of this was extremely heavy on instruments, which Pentatonix isn't using. Obviously they have Kevin and Avi for percussion and bass guitar, so those are no problem. But then we had a huge amount of piano in Queen's rendition, plus, of course, the iconic guitar solos. For piano Pentatonix substitutes their usual bell tones, and their close harmony. As for the guitar solos, I wonder just how much Mitch's discovery of his inner electric guitar factored into their decision that they were finally ready. I suspect that it might have been the final piece, clicking into place for them. Oh, good! Someone else who notices Kevin's invisible drum kit! This is one of the things I like best about Kevin (among a whole raft of things to like about Kevin) - the way he can make me see the instruments that aren't there. He almost always does this when they're singing while seated; he reaches out his invisible drumsticks to hit invisible drums, or cymbals, whatever instrument he needs. In songs where you can just watch him while everyone else is singing it quickly becomes surreal - you know that the sound is coming straight from him, but darn it, you just SAW him hit that cymbal! It must have come from the cymbal, right? 🤔 Note that the megaphone is just something that Mitch saw lying around on the set, and he thought it would make a good prop, so he used it as a prop. It actually has nothing to do with his guitar solos, which he regularly does in live performances with nothing but a microphone. Note that in the "Bismillah" argument Mitch and Avi are singing the low part while Kirstie and Kevin take the high part. Mitch was the best choice to pair with Avi because with his range of just over six octaves he can sing lower than either Kevin or Kirstin. Also, because they needed all available voices participating, Scott was singing with both sides of the argument, while also being the subject of it. Scott has said that this rapid switching between high and low was the most difficult part of this song for him. That final "Anywhere the wind blows" may have sounded like Mitch, but it was actually coming from Kevin. Every member of Pentatonix wanted to play Freddie Mercury in this one, so they found a way to make that happen. The starry night sky during Mitch's second guitar solo is in honor of Kevin May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics. The four shooting stars honor the four members of Queen. When the camera pans back down from the starry sky to show them lying on the couch, that shot of them is meant to recall the cover art for Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album. And when this first came out Brian May posted a link to it on all his social media, with a single word comment: "Enjoy."
Fan facts guys…They actually got Dr. Brain May’s blessing for doing this. Also, another true fact…It took them almost 6 years to pull this song together….This was my first introduction to PTX…..I have finally watched every PTX video they have ever done thus far. PTX has been spreading love and joy for 12 years. This is is tribute to Freddy and Queen . These should never be a competition in music. These guys love collabs with other artists (Ie Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson, Megan Trainer). Never competition but they strife for excellence
The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC! Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.
Great reaction. It's awesome the way they pay tribute to the original song. The flashlight scene, Queen did the blue and black background and when they pan to the Stars it's a tribute. The four shooting stars are for the band members and for Brian May who got his degree in astrophysics. And of course the best part, Brian May watched this and loved it. Can't get better except the original.
I'm sure this has already been said, but just in case: Pentatonix worked on/thought about this arrangement for 5 years before releasing it. Scott said they wanted it to be perfect as an homage to one of the best bands and one of the best songs of all time. When the song released, Brian May, guitarist of Queen, shared it on his social media with the simple caption: Enjoy.

Great reaction, as always. I'm not sure if you reacted to their "Daft Punk Medley", yet. If not, you should put it on your list. It's another of my favorites from them.
The one that will REALLY blow your mind is their first Grammy award winner - the Daft Punk Medley. Beat-boxer Kevin will keep up a frantic rhythm, but the "electronic" sounds that emulate Daft Punk's electronic music will leave you near speechless.
There is a sharp bit of editing early on because, when the ensemble climbed onto the sofa at once, it tipped and they were all unloaded onto the road. See if you can spot it. Apart from that, what a creative cover! I think the four meteors in the starry sky are to represent Freddie, Brian, John and Roger.
The short space scene at the end of the video is supposedly a homage to Queen guitarist Brian May, who shortly before this video was made, received his PhD in Astrophysics. So now all four Queen members have graduated for a PhD. Not bad for a rock band. 🙏
Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! Some of my suggestions (many of which have already been suggested, I"m sure): Amazing Grace -- Kirsten's soaring solo. And even though Mitch is rightfully known for his high notes, this shows off his GORGEOUS lower range. "Shallow" and "Say Something" -- heavily features Kirstin -- not to mention Kevin "cellboxing" (beat boxing and playing cello AT THE SAME TIME) "Imagine" -- the incredible PTX "wall of sound", not to mention one of the most beautiful videos. 'The Prayer" = another incredibly beautiful video, great harmonies, and the wall of sound. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" -- the beat box "drops" from Kevin bring this cover to a whole other level -- and then there's Mitch's INSANELY high note. Christmas songs: PTX OWNS Christmas -- here are some of my favorite covers: Little Drummer Boy, Carol of the Bells, Mary Did You Know, Silent Night. Originals: PTX does mostly covers, but they also have great originals: "Run To You": 5-part harmony with beautiful lyrics. "Thank You": a "Christmas" song that was written by Scott and his boyfriend. It's a bit different from their usual style, but the lyrics are so masterful. After hearing this song 50+ times, it still brings me to tears (the good kind of tears!) "Love Me When I Don't" -- very meaningful lyrics, and surprisingly upbeat for the message. Enjoy!
Both group are the best, and both has very loyal fan base is a matter if the style that they have that make them different, I love Ptx more, but that dosent mean the others are bad,
You cant get better than Freddy Mercury, and the great musician of Queen, but doing this acapella, is fabulous, and very difficult, the arguments to make the music the vocals, even the guitar solo, and the video is fun, they made their own version but paying a tribute to few things to the original, the singing with the lights, the stars,
Hey guys i have just found you recently and enjoy your laid back yet enthusiastic commentary. I really enjoy that you are trying all types of music. I would love for you to do a video on Jim Croce. A great singer/songwriter of the early seventies. I would recommend his biggest hit first, " I Got a Name". thank you

Please check out The Evolution of Ariana Grande, The Evolution of Riihanna, The Evolution of Beyonce, The Evolution of Michael Jackson, and The Evolution of Music. OK I Like both but lets no confuse who is best. Pentatonix has had 2 double Platinum selling albums, including several number 1 albums. 3 gold albums, 5,000,000,000 (Yes BILLION) UA-cam views alone, 3 Grammy's; nominated for a fourth. Home Free has 0 Gold, 0 Platinum, 0 Grammy's and 500,000,000+ (Million) UA-cam views( which is GREAT!). You may LIKE them better but let's not get it twisted, PTX is number 1 quantitatively... As i said, I enjoy them both, but the argument is mute, just enjoy them.. Now it's simply who you like better and that's a great and fun discussion. Loved that.
There is another reason they call themselves Pentatonix: What is so special about pentatonic scales? A central characteristic of the pentatonic scale is that it's anhemitonic. This sounds complicated, but it means it's actually a simplified version of the scales that we're most familiar with. Hemitonic scales such as our standard major scale contain notes that are a semitone, or half step, apart from one another.
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on Pentatonix cover of Bohemian Rhapsody From Queen. Your lucky you were able to do the full video showing. This video getting blocked out alot do to copyright.
I think I have a really good idea for you guys. Play Kiera’s music video “Gold” which is a synched electro but cool song. Then. Play PTX s Version of Gold. It’s recorded live and it’s a masterclass of vocals and harmonies. It’s fantastic
Best acapella groups: Pentatonix, HomeFree, Voiceplay, and Voctave....Pentatonix changed a little after losing Avi Kaplan (the bass). They are still great but you don't lose a magical voice like Avi's and not have it change the sound. Each group is different and I love the all....
I agree that Avi's voice was special, but many of my favorite songs have come after he left; The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, The Sound of Silence, 90s Dance Medley, Come Along, etc. So while their sound may be a little different, I think it's just as good.
@@michaelf8702 I’d add “You’re a Mean One Mr Grinch”. As much as I love Avi’s voice, I don’t think he could have pulled that off with the same panache Matt did. The joy and delight in his delivery was magical.
Your reactions were great, as always! Another thing that many will disagree with me about.... there is no "best" within the top tier of a cappella (PTX, Voice Play, Home Free, Voctave). The one you are listening to at the MOMENT is the best.
People that are fans of Pentatonix call themselves Pentaholics. People that are fans of Home Free call themselves Home Fries. People that are fans of BOTH groups call themselves Pentafries!
Rumor has it that they worked on it for five years before they thought they had a tribute worthy of the original…they did not try to “imitate” the original, but rather pay homage to Queen and Freddy Mercury….
Acapella Holy Trinity is PTX, Home Free & Voiceplay. All equally talented unicorns lol. With mutual respect. Just really depends what mood you're in & what is more sonically pleasing. I've been a Pentaholic since day 1, but I follow HF & VP as well. A PentaFryPlayer is you will lol!

"Thank You": a "Christmas" song that was written by Scott and his boyfriend. It's a bit different from their usual style, but the lyrics are so masterful. After hearing this song 50+ times, it still brings me to tears (the good kind of tears!)
"Love Me When I Don't" -- very meaningful lyrics, and surprisingly upbeat for the message.
Enjoy!
Would love to see your reaction to, “When the Party is Over”. Really shows off Mitch’s range.
Both group are the best, and both has very loyal fan base is a matter if the style that they have that make them different, I love Ptx more, but that dosent mean the others are bad,
awesome.....more Pentatonix and Home Free please.
Daftpunk Medley won them a Grammy!
I would recommend his biggest hit first, " I Got a Name". thank you
Everything!
Here is the thing about all art. Its subjective. Neither is better they are both great and different.
Great reaction guys! You MUST do their Evolution Of series, where they take on a particular artist and mashup all of their hits. This series is really well done and they are just fantastic! Please check out The Evolution of Ariana Grande, The Evolution of Riihanna, The Evolution of Beyonce, The Evolution of Michael Jackson, and The Evolution of Music. The best a cappella group in the world!
Loved that.
Absolutely 😊👍
There is another reason they call themselves Pentatonix: What is so special about pentatonic scales?
A central characteristic of the pentatonic scale is that it's anhemitonic. This sounds complicated, but it means it's actually a simplified version of the scales that we're most familiar with. Hemitonic scales such as our standard major scale contain notes that are a semitone, or half step, apart from one another.
These guys always bring something new to the table. Try their "daft punk" medley. Then try "The Prayer".
Great job with your reaction and thoughts on Pentatonix cover of Bohemian Rhapsody From Queen. Your lucky you were able to do the full video showing. This video getting blocked out alot do to copyright.
This is the biggest Mitch Slap you can get.
Another good one to check out is Pentatonix's version of John Lennon's Imagine.
My favorite part was seeing Sam smile
Their voices are their instruments.
Amazing.
Amazing!
Pentatonix - 90's Mix
Pentatonix - Daft Punk ⬅️ EPIC
Algorithm Comments worth doing
The very best!!!
They do this live as teh final song at least on last years tour
Apparently it took them 5 years to perfect this to where they were happy with it!
An there you have it, drop the mic!!!!!!!
I think I have a really good idea for you guys. Play Kiera’s music video “Gold” which is a synched electro but cool song. Then. Play PTX s
Version of Gold. It’s recorded live and it’s a masterclass of vocals and harmonies. It’s fantastic
When Home Free gets 3 Grammys (like Pentatonix), then maybe we can embark on a conversation about who's better.
Awesome
Not saying they arent still the standard, just saying they changed after Avi's departure.
@@dalebuck7168 Changed for the better, IMO.
Pentatonix, Home Free, VoicePlay--they're ALL good! No need for any "who's better" arguments...
You should react to Spooky by the Atlanta Rhythm Section
If you like both Pentatonix and Home free. Definitely chrck out Voice play
Mitch’s electric guitar!!!
Did you catch that the couch was rolling down a road?
There's also the pentatonic scale.
Listen to Voctave their version of Disney Princess Medley
Rumor has it that they worked on it for five years before they thought they had a tribute worthy of the original…they did not try to “imitate” the original, but rather pay homage to Queen and Freddy Mercury….
Do the Daft Punk medley. It is some of PTX best work.
