So I helped break a group record, officially. It was the longest loom band bracelet in the world; we made roughly 26km. We were fundraising for the leukemia foundation. There were hundreds of us but I was in the top 4, which was everyone that made over 1.1km because that meant we'd each broken the individual record but we couldn't claim it because it was being contributed to the group record. We wound our loom band strands onto large barrel sized spoils and brought them all to the university's gym we'd rented for the day. We spent morning to night rolling them out in lines from one end of the court to the other, connecting each spool's strands to each other, and bunching the lines together so close that from afar it looked like a very strange carpet. Official measurers checked that each line passed some measurement lines on the ground and then they counted each line and multiplied it by their lengths.
The leader got sent a certificate but we weren't put in any of the books; we were apparently not interesting enough and they only chose a select few each year. We are on the website, though.
We worked hard on this - some people just contribute 30cm and that was great, but others would make at least a meter a day. We'd have meet ups and frantically loom band together over tea. I remember saying that my fingers had started to bleed and someone else suggested that I use medical tape instead of bandaid because I could still loom band with medical tape but it's harder to do with bandaids. She was speaking from experience.

I only learned after Hbomberguy’s recent video that people often pay for records that nobody is even allowed to challenge. So it’s not just that only people who go to Guinness World Records can have their achievements counted toward the record, but regularly you just aren’t allowed to challenge the records even if you want to and know you could beat it. So their records now seem pretty meaningless to me.
tommy tallerico should get a world record for most entirely invalid bullshit world records so he can add it to his pile in his indiana jones room

What if you go about this the other way? Instead of making limb bread to so it looks like normal limbs, why not go in the opposite direction and find a few unusual limbs that match the shape of your bread?

I once attended a world record attempt. It was the for most people dressed as superheroes in one place. We didn’t get it, I think we were 10 shy of the record at the time. I genuinely think everyone who showed up didn’t give a crap about the record, it was just a fun day out for kids and a place small business could set up a stall.
There was no second attempt 😂

I haven't watched ethan in a couple weeks, and I love how uniquely this was filmed. they did a great job and I loved the environments they filmed in, I guess it just felt more personal that they weren't just sitting at a desk the whole time.

The only world record I personally care about was the brief but chaotic phase when not one but two local farms were competing for the World's Largest Strawberry Shortcake. One of them took over a quarter of Bellevue Square mall, and so we all watched with glee as the sheer monumental amount of Strawberry stopped all foot traffic. And then everyone got some of the shortcake and we all wandered off like it never happened. Someone beat their record soon after, and now it feels like all the records are about longest shortcake, not largest.
I've gone looking for any records since to prove this happened (beyond the folks who watched it with me) and I may one day have to scour the library microfiche to find it.

@@ellelard3992 Yes! It occurred before I owned a cell phone, so I think around 1999-2001? It's not exactly something I wrote down the date for anywhere because it was just a thing that happened around that time. Biringer and Remlinger were regularly competing to be The Local Favorite Farm for a good few years (and this is back when Biringer had the cafe at Pike Place too), so it was impressive but more a slice of the stuff they were up to.
Has anyone seen the Paramore Ain't It Fun music video? It's just the band trying to break as many world records as they can, so that they can win the world record for the most world records broken in a music video
I remember when the world record books were the size of a regular paperback, and were mostly just text with a few creepy black and white photos of giant spider crabs and obese twins on motorcycles.

I was present for the record break of the longest distance throwing a grape and running and catching it in the mouth. It’s one of those super specific ones but the reason I was there was it was actually a fundraiser for the man’s daughter who had eye cancer and he couldn’t afford her treatment. I didn’t care about the record and I’m not sure he did either but it was because he needed the money. Local businesses donated goods for a betting pool where people would bet on the distance and the person closest won the donated goods and all the money went to his daughter. A lot of these super specific ones might seem cringe but I think a lot of them might be for similar reasons
As somebody with a resting heart rate of about 50 bpm, it was rlly funny seeing Jordan guess 40 bpm as the world’s lowest
@@alexisannoyinggg I’m pretty sure normal is somewhere in the 80-100 range. I know mine’s considered low bc I was hooked up to a heart rate monitor for surgery once, and the machine just started screaming. The tech said it was bc my heart rate is so low it thought I was already unconscious
I wonder what the record is for highest. Because of anxiety my resting heart rate has been insane for years now but I’m also on lots of medication that combats that. Maybe I should stop my meds to see what my heart rate really is and see if I have a shot at beating a record 🤔
Athletes tend to have a resting heart rate of about 40. The stronger your heart is, the less it has to pump to efficiently pump blood throughout the body.
@@strxwbxrry_420 yeah, that’s what I’ve heard. I grew up doing martial arts my whole life, and I was a pretty good wrestler back in school, so I’d guess that’s the big reason tbh. I also did like choir and stuff in school, so I learned lots abt how to breathe efficiently, and I’ve noticed I breathe a lot slower and deeper than most people I know

They should do a special dystopian edition where they credit all world records to companies. Fastest 100 meters could go to the companies that made the shoes and the track, longest javelin throw to the javelin manufacturer, all entertainment media records to production/record companies, longest milk squirt from the eye to the dairy company and the hotel. Would be kinda cool, a book about things people have done without the people.

Ethan, would you consider adding subtitles to your videos? I love your stuff, but I have an auditory processing disorder and so sometimes making out what you’re saying is hard and it takes my focus from the topic.
I also know there’s likely lots of others in your fanbase who would benefit and likely need it even more than I do!
I mean there are the auto subtitles but Ik those things are awful at times and can’t make a coherent sentence

When I was a kid I was a part of a world record attempt for the largest maths class which just meant my entire school as well as a few other schools in town came together and had a 20 minute maths class in a hockey stadium. I don't even know if we broke the record because to get counted as a participant you had to get the maths questions right
With the heart beat thing, it’s pretty crazy. Ole one eye Michael Bisping had a resting heart beat of 35 back when he was a professional UFC fighter so I can only imagine the conditioning that man has.

when i was a kid my cousin (also a kid) wanted to get the world record for biggest collection of plastic bottle caps. family members, friends, neighbors, everyone was asked to save any and all caps they could get and give them to him. and we did. he had so many big garbage bags full of bottle caps. and i think he just lost the passion for it or sth and they got rid of them without ever trying to contact guinness 😭
Taking the traffic cone guy as example for "largest collection", I wonder if Guinness said "sorry, they have to be individual ones (i.e. not a whole sack of Bud Light caps, for example) and mounted for display". Because otherwise it'd be far too easy to brute-force those kinds of records.

For collections, only unique items are counted. So if I had 100,000 of the same exact lunchbox, it would only count as 1 lunchbox, as they aren't unique. In that context, having 137 traffic cones is VERY impressive.

honestly, i think it is a little bit cool. used to roll with a crowd who liked to collect things like historical soda bottles and unique paper clips and honestly its kind of cool to see whats poppin in the niche collector's space
Hbomberguy did a video recently on Tommy Tallarico, the lying 'creator' of the roblox 'oof' sound. During that video, because Tommy claims to have a number of official guiness records, Hbomberguy investigated what that really means and revealed that all these oddly specific records are just a scam where someone pays guiness a decent amount of money and they give them the record with the title the customer has specified.
I'll bet that's where traffic-cone guy got his record, he bought it.
I mean, even if you want to break a "normal" record, you'll have to pay Guinness to fly out a judge to oversee your attempt, so …
Not sure if that also goes for sports related records (like someone breaking a world record at the Olympics) or stuff like "oldest person alive", or if they scrape those from public sources. But at least for records like "largest burger" (oddly enough, the website only lists records for largest vegetarian and largest vegan burger) it does.
But yeah, many of those super specific records feel like they only exist to flatter their owners' ego.

Oh my god I actually had a Guiness World Record book when I was very young ((I'm 20 now for reference)) and it contained the milk spit out eye distance record ! I read that book a million times and can say with certainty that I am very famililar with that entry !

i remember my 2016 guiness world records book was my favourite to read, and i was obsessed with this show called officially amazing, which was all about breaking records. I do agree that records are kind of silly but also i think its fun watching the competition and seeing peole achieve some kind of cool goal. when its individual people or groups rather than companies and celebrities winning, thats what makes it fun

I feel like it all makes a lot more sense when you look at the name. Guinness Book of World Records, why does that sound familiar oh yeah that’s a name of one of the most famous alcohol brands in the world. It’s a bar book originally meant to be read by people in a bar drinking large amounts of alcohol. That’s how it started the story was pretty interesting they just started publishing on a whim for people to read at the bar then it randomly got super popular. It’s very much like Michelin stars, except with Michelin stars even less people are aware it’s literally just the regular ol’ tire brand and not a coincidence. You bring up a great point though, that mathematically even just the last 50 words you said out loud are almost 100% guaranteed to be a totally unique combination never uttered
Yup, Michelin stars basically started out as a restaurant guide so people would go for a ride with their families on the weekends and use up their tires faster.
