This ad makes me so violently angry every time I have to sit through it. My partner always uses the chance to get popcorn so he can leave
8:31 FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONS THE ELECTRIC COMPANY THING. It’s bothered me since the first time I watched the goonies. I worked at an unofficial Goonies museum over the summer and literally explained that to a few people and they looked at me like I was nuts.
Honestly the one I really hate is the AMC one because it just feels so sappy and pretentious when it’s literally just a movie theatre.
I saw a video of a guy standing and reciting it like the Pledge of Allegiance somewhere, it’s amazing.
FOR REAL I watched across the spiderverse multiple times this summer and having to see Nicole Kidman give that melodramatic monologue every time……..
“We Come To This Place……… For Magic”

@@peaceofpie94 can't stand those DAF ads. AMC needs to can those
@@asanitheafrofuturist I watched the new Godzilla movie this weekend: bad news, those ads still exist. Good news, they’re a lil bit shorter and show different movie clips
my local theatre has maybe the funniest ad in the entire world. it's terrible, don't get me wrong, but i can quote it word for word. no one annunciates anything, and eventually this man aggressively asks his wife what time the movie starts and a server with a plate of food walks by and he starts yelling for them not to go (his wife has to reassure him that they can get food in the theatre.) as they sit down he asks if they can get food in there and the wife starts saying her line but he cuts her off to reiterate that she did in fact say there would be food. then she retorts that you can even eat it in the theatre and he lets out a very strange groan. the server explains how it works and then turns around to tell us about texting in the theatre and it just does like an imovie boom up onto this guy texting and everyone just stares at him. it's a family owned theatre so the owner explains how thankful he is while his family sits in the row with him and i am consistently distracted by the baby taking the straw out of their mom's drink. ten out of ten, always a joy
Regal worker here! I'm happy to say that the ad is no longer running!
Darth Vader Voice: NOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo!
F
So glad you didn't cut out the Duncaccino part.
At least they had the guy quoting Mean Girls wear pink and the girl quoting Clueless wear yellow plaid. Even though the quotes don't make, the costumes do 😅
Can confirm Danny Trejo does not watch movies at Regal.
8:47 Is anyone else a PBS kids electric company viewer 😊
Yes, I loved that show, the wordball power was the coolest to me lol
The awful ad reminds me that they changed the Regal logo from a crown that makes sense for a company called Regal to a weird orange…octagon? hexagon? I dunno. It’s a stupid logo.
I think the idea with the Danny Trejo bit is that he was sharing imhis drink and the person he shared it with drank it all before he got any
you've sold me max. this ad is amazing actually.
also keep it up with the unscripted videos they're great :)
I feel like when they got the popcorn they should have said “is butter a carb” missed opportunity
I used to hate this ad, but when I realized they’d pulled it, I realized I missed it 😭
I'm an 80s kid, but Australian. So TIL that the Goonies quote is actually from The Electric Company
Every time I see this ad I am filled with immense rage
As someone who regularly goes to regal. This ad actually has grown on me a lot.💀
i miss seeing this ad sooooo much my friends and i go to reagal alllll the time and it's an inside joke between us and we're devestated we can't experience it anymore lmao 💔💔💔💔
I literally have never watched this ad. Seeing you analyze it was such a blessing
Hey what do you think about the new Charlie and the chocolate factory not being a musical and Timothy chalamet as wonka? I kinda miss it as a musical personally.
i’m from Australia and so i’ve actually never seen this ad! it looks ridiculous tho BAHAHAHA
however when i went to sanfransisco in the holidays i did see a ad in the movies with nichole kidman that was equally as pandering lmao! i guess this is what US ads are like? 😭
australia’s ads can be equally as ridiculous tho lol! thanks for the video! had to instantly subscribe of course!
look at banner michael!
He's saying "this place is nicer than my apartment" as he's *leaving* the cinema: is he talking about the car park?!
you may wanna rewatch it, he's definitely walking into the theater lol
Tbh the best ads are cringe
Max, as someone with no prior knowledge of this add, I found this video ABSOLUTELY hilarious love you and your videos 😙❤️✌️
(Edit to add a favorite quote bc why tf not: “I KNEW YOU WEREN’T A SOUP!!” -Elenor shellstrop the good place)
[also I’d love to hear to talk about heathers the musical]
Okay I have a ton to say after watching this lmao.
First of all, you've quickly become one of my favorite UA-camrs, genuinely. You're super natural on camera and your humor fits into your conversational tone like perfectly, plus I love the genuine passion for your topics and lack of mindless cynicism. Found you thru illegal Hamilton and have enjoyed all of your content since a *ton*. The buddies video is a personal favorite.
Okay now about the ad: this video was hilarious because you were basically describing perfectly why I and all my friends hate the ad, and then you just had a different conclusion of "and that's why it's good" lol. So to that extent, no, you did not convince me that it's good lmao. In fact, you reinforced why I think it's awful. BUT, i think it's primarily a perception thing. Because like, me and my friends all rag on this ad and we say we hate it, and it's for all the reasons you talk about (primarily it just not making any sense and that it's pandering so hard), but like, we def love to hate it. I think the only difference between you and me is that i would not ever conclude that the ad is good without immediately saying "and by 'good' i mean 'so bad its good'." Like, end of the day, the ad is awful lol. I firmly believe it's awful (and it doesn't sound like you disagree...?), but I've never said it's not enjoyable, if that makes sense?
Part of the disconnecy may be that I actually didn't know everyone hated this ad online; finding that out through this video was actually very vindicating lol. I'm in the same boat of thinking much of online is way too cynical and im fully in the camp of "let yourself enjoy things," even though the internet hates enjoying things. But anecdotally i can definitely say that there has always been enjoyment along my dislike of the ad. It's an immensely frustrating ad because of how insanely awful it is to me, everytime i watch it I cringe at how awful the dialogue is, but at the same time, I'm smiling and laughing with my friends at how awful every piece of it is.
Also one other point: unpopular opinion, but I don't mind pandering as long as it's written well. Sometimes it's really enjoyable to just watch something that is tailor made to pander to a specific audience. For example: Spider-Man No Way Home. Phenomenal movie with tons of heart and genuinely heartfelt writing. Some people say it's "more than pandering" because it's written so well. I disagree, to me that movie is blatantly pandering, but that isn't inherently a bad thing!! Something can be good while also being pandering, and that can be immensely enjoyable. Really what matters is if the creators "get it", y'know? Like did they understand who they were pandering to, to make something *truly* enjoyable. This ad was definitely not that. The Regal ad reeks of people *thinking* they're being clever while just failing at like ever opportunity. I see the appeal there, too; again, I love to hate it. But it's still so so so poorly-written lol.
I dunno, I'm kinda rambling too lol. Just wanted to share my mind after watching, maybe give a very subtly different perspective. Great video as always, looking forward to the next one dude ✌️
Oh shoot, forgot to say other stuff I'd love to hear you talk about: I second that other comment that mentions Heathers the Musical. One of my favorite musicals. Because Heathers has so many iterations that are popular in their own way, I think it'd be interesting to compare them too, like original cast recording vs West end vs Pro shot. Just a thought!
Another favorite musical of mine is Be More Chill, and I would love a video about how every single choice made for the Broadway version is abhorrent. I love the original cast recording and absolutely hate the Broadway version. Them making the Squip a surfer rocker dude and making Michael a stoner and changing so much instrumentation for the worse needs to be discussed by someone, please do this for me someday. The Broadway version of BMC is an atrocity and yes I *will* die on this hill
Hey! Thank you so much! That really means a lot and I'm glad you enjoy, thanks for being here. I guess at this point, my opinions have massively transitioned from "loving to hate things" to just loving them because they're so egregious. This doesn't just apply to the Regal ad, in fact in the original cut of this video I dived into other examples of this for me, including TikToker Jake Novak and the "I Play Pokemon Go" kid. I enjoyed reading your opinion, though, and I totally understand why people would just hate all of it!
I can't stop watching your content, your personality is just so infectious( I think I might be developing a crush on you lol). Keep up the great content, you're doing amazing!
No because that’s exactly how I remember who Al Pacino is.
“Dunk-a Dunk-a Dunk-a dunk-a Dunk-achino.
This ad seems awful but one of the cinemas over here (Vue) has one that just has a painfully loud noise so I'd take it over that
A small movie theater I went to recently made their own ad to play during the previews, and it’s only cringe because the dude who was working the concession stand in the theater sits down next to the dude he just sold popcorn, and starts eating his popcorn
When you started this, I didn't think I had ever seen it until hoir friend did the line thay annoys him. Then I realise I have and...I LOVE THIS AD!
What I don't love is your odd asusmptions about whether or not and how the quotes land. Annoying or not, I know lots of people who make obscure movie references to strangers even if for no other reason than to find my people. It must be a generational thing. I guaran damn tee you people in other countries ARE familiar with The Goonies wven if they don't know that quote is a reference to "The Electric Company". The quote that yoir friend hates so much ACTUALLY works within the context of the exchange bc its from Dumb and Dumber when Lauren Holly tells Jim Carrey some version of "not if you were the last man on Earth" and he replies "So you're saying there's a chance" which fits without the mental gymnastics you've applied 😂
11:52 Oh my god! Why did you make this video with no clue what's going on? Danny Trejo says (like Michael Corleone) "I know it was you, Fredo" implying that the reason hes finshed his soda so fast is because the girl next him has been drinking it when he wasnt looking and she says "As if!" meaning whu would she drink his soda when she has her own. The second girl is nit dressed as Wednesday Addams...her dress is GREEN. She's an elf!
In case you didn't understand why she was takling to the giy eating pocorn, shes accusing him of drinking the soda since he seems to be scarfing down popcorn without a drink of his own.
Oh and finally...why does it need to make sense?
I don't think I've been into a Regal cinema but imagine someone quoting the line from Scarface "Say hello to my little friend" and start shooting people. Looks like R&D didn't think this through.
This proves that movie dialogue is a language that not many people understand.
This is all Millennial pop culture behavior mixed with zillennial behavior.
I agree. This ad is perfect. I look forward to it every time i go. YOU SIT ON A THRONE OF LIES
I honestly didn’t know anyone else but me hated this, my friends usually chuckle and smile at it and it’s so insane to me
Controversial opinion: this ad is on the same level of iconic as Nicole Kidman’s ‘heartbreak feels good in a place like this’
It’s funny i think the love for Dunkaccino through the same lens you’re seeing this ad, a bad scene from a bad movie that is so dumb it transcended. I would probably think of Dunkaccino first too
Love that you left in Dunkaccino 🤣🤣🤣
12:21 she’s dressed as Buddy bc her shirt is green and his shirt also has a white collar I guess
Algorythmus decided that I would want to see this video, in spite of the fact that I haven't been to a movie theater since before COVID, I've never seen the channel before, and the video is 8 months old. Also, never saw the Regal ad before now.
So, it's an ad where every line is a famous movie line? I can understand the concept, but yeah so many poorly chosen lines. Before you even said it I thought it seemed like they're lines from movies that Gen-X/Early Millennials would be the most likely people to get.
Well, now I need to go find this AMC video you spoke of.
EDIT: Holy crap, that ad sucks.
I've never seen the ad although I've also haven't been to a theater in forever.
Every time this ad comes up I walk out of the theatre for a couple of minutes.
You should talk about cyber chase
sorry to break it to you bud, but if you go to regal theaters more often because of that ad, that means its working
I liked the Almost Famous line.
Thank god someone agrees with me about the Nicole Kidman AMC ad
"It's so bad it's funny" is subjective. Most people enjoy and seek out things with internal consistency because it's more fulfilling than watching bullsh!t made by bullsh!tters and maybe finding things to make fun out.
You had me at "meatride" 😆
Social anxiety is scared of them
I always turn feral when i see it
2 minutes into the video I hope they play that clip from the ratatouille musical (for fun)
👍 👍
danny trejo is my favorite spy kid
Also, I have never seen this ad cause I haven’t been to a Regal (they’re on the other side of the metroplex) but at this point I have “REGICIDE” tattooed across my knuckles and on PRINCIPLE I can’t go now
I don’t have enough confidence to talk to service people at all…
As a teen movie nerd I love this ad and I get so giddy when I watch it
I had no idea people hated this ad, I kinda like it
Hi
I liked the ad.
Sorry, I gotta unsubscribe l, I can’t trust the taste of someone who actively dislikes Pepsi. Coke tastes like battery acid 😂

I think the godfather one is insinuating she drank some of his beforehand
