    "What does The Joker care about territory?" Narcissism Lewis, narcissism.
    The Joker cares because the rest of Gotham cares. Sure he'd rather be doing something he finds amusing, but likewise he seeks validation from outside sources as well. Otherwise he wouldn't go to the lengths he does against or for Batman's attentions. He wants to share his jokes; but what's a joke that no one pays attention to?

    • @DavyEddyBenny
      @DavyEddyBenny 2 роки тому +29

      Sounds about right, just as Gotham didn't care about Batman when he returned after those events they also didn't care about Joker. Just as Batman had to change his approach in gaining territory also the Joker was forced to do the same to reclaim attention.

    Didn't know who Cassandra Cain was before this, but this video made me a fan! Not only is her costume and gimmick cool, but she's also really relatable to a neurodivergent person.
    She has processing issues like speaking and reading, she's super good at one thing in particular, and Cassandra's way of seeing the world is quite literally different. And if there's one thing ND people can relate to, it's hearing ignorant shit like "How stupid can you be?!". Thanks Barbara.

    No Man's Land is an especially harsh story arc after some of the high profile natural disasters that have hit major US cities in the 23 years since it came out. Especially ones where the government really dropped the ball on disaster preparation and rescue/recovery.

    So fun fact about Navajo: the reason why Najavo was used to create code used by the United States Navy during the war in the Pacific because it was such a complex language that it was unintelligible to even close relatives to it in the Na-Dene language groups. 1:16:19: I would say that it is better than what DC editorial did to Nora Fries in the New 52 in my opinion. If the writers had explored Nora Fries as Lazura, then this would be about Mr. Fries trying to convince his wife why he did such a thing. He would also tell her the entire truth about what has happened to him since she was frozen in suspended animation. Eventually, Nora would regain her sanity and would lose her powers after realizing that Victor would never harm her and would do whatever it takes to save her. It would cause him to face a few years in prison, but Nora would be here watching and waiting for him. This would be a satisfying conclusion to Mister Freeze’s character arc.

    The handling of her character by DC very much makes me think of Cass as the DC equivalent to Mayday Parker aka Spider-Girl. She too was a character with a consistent following (Marvel was constantly cancelling and uncancelling her book every 6 issues for over a decade) yet Marvel seems to almost resent her. They do barely anything to use the character or promote her to a wider audience. The Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon deliberately invented a new Spider-Girl character to avoid using her in the Web-Warriors arc. The first time they'd used her after her book ended, was part of the Spider-Verse event, in which a writer who seemed to go barely know anything about her did a story majorly screwing her over (sounding familiar?). Like Cass this had major fan backlash too (to the point that when her creators were brought on board to do a Spider-Verse tie in with her, they deliberately inserted subtle continuity errors to try and imply this wasn't the real Mayday), and Marvel has now kinda sorta fixed it... ish... in Spider-Geddon (it's an ambiguous ending panel of a story). They just still won't use her outside of occasional appearances in Spider-Crossover events.

    • @EnerKaizer
      @EnerKaizer 2 роки тому +3

      not quite right.
      Recently it was revealed that mephisto did his deal with peter to change history so Mayday would be erased from history. Reason for that is that may would be the one to permanently end him, hence why he does everything in his might to make sure it doesn't happen.
      Still doesn't excuse all of the insane rewrites and retcons happening to erase Peters marriage with MJ, but yeah. Mayday is getting a big push.

    • @toqkaizogou1636
      @toqkaizogou1636 2 роки тому +11

      @@EnerKaizer Apologies for long reply but:
      That's a different character. Mayday Parker is a character from the alternate MC2 universe. The Mephisto vision Spider-Girl is a tease at a potential version of her that'll likely never go anywhere. Spencer was teasing throughout his run that we'd get a proper acknowledgement of OMD and it never happened. That vision at the end of his run comes across as Marvel Editorial stepping in, shutting down Spencer's plans, and throwing in a false tease to try and damage control the situation.
      It also doesn't help that they've falsely teased her before, back before the MC2 version dven existed. The MC2 version is a What If, of the Clone Saga baby, based on Tom DeFalco's original intentions where Marvel didn't get rid of her. He'd intended for the baby to be revealed as alive and brought back. Teased it. Then Marvel stepped in, shut it down and had Aunt May be brought back from death instead. Then Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz decided to do What If 105 where the original plan happened and the baby grew up into Mayday.
      Marvel has form was false teases of her in 616 and the Mephisto vision is likely not to be followed up on for a LONG TIME (if ever).

      @EnerKaizer 2 роки тому +1

      @@toqkaizogou1636 Pal, don't know what to tell you, but Mephisto is build up for a major event. They even made a council of Mephistos, and he was prominently featured in some storylines. This is going to be a thing unless specifically said otherwise. Nothing you said felt confirmed in any way, and felt more like wishfull thinking from your part. Nothing was de-confirmed, nothing was said to be offically droped, this is still a thing.

      I'm reminded of another marvel character, Andi Benton of the 2011 Venom run, starting as Flash's sidekick Mania. She was hugely popular, and writers like Bunn wanted to do more with her, but editorial kept shafting her. She lost her first symbiote, editors put the kibosh on an arc with her, Flash basically forgot her during Space Knight and she lost her first symbiote. She got the Scream symbiote and her own run, but between Marvel barely marketing it and Covid beginning to hit, it got canceled 6 issues in. They bring her back for king in black, only to strip her of Scream in another story arc and give her Silence.
      They seemed to have at least calmed it down a bit, with Andi at least appearing in Venom Beyond, and some games, but man did editors seem to resent her.

    I'm happy that Cass seems to be being put back on track, one of my friends showed me the 2022 Batgirls series where both her and Stephine are both Batgirl and working together, in fact as of this post they just released an annual that erm...well has the two in a Freaky Friday situation.
    and for something a little more short and sweet, there's the Bat-Family Webtoons comic that shows Cass and the others in slice of life scinarios
    I hope this continues for Cass and thanks for the amazing retrospective Linkara

  • @ill_hex8103
    @ill_hex8103 Рік тому +3

    Funny thing is, they could've had the start of Batgirl's remorse with Oracle and Batman be that they're clearly frustrated (through body language) with her inability to process certain things (like language and social cues) and moments like Oracle blowing up in her are major moments in a separate context. They don't actually hate her or hate wanting to help her out, but that momentary anger can sometimes just be the breaking point when piled on top of other "thousand cuts" problems (like Spoiler being fired, David Cain's gift, and being close to Lady Shieva's death match).
    There's a writer (who's name has lost me) that wrote a story with inspiration from his own difficulties with mental illness by writing a character who's sister privately (in a letter that the character later saw) vents about how frustrating it is to deal with someone who suffers from one. She still loves them, but the underlying issue still makes things difficult.
    Also, what's with writers having a Batgirl get hit on by a criminal and having it feel like it's supposed to be a gender-reversed Batman/Catwoman dynamic? At least with Cassandra, she's been isolated from normal social interaction. Babs is just a victim of creepy terrible writing.

    Lewis has really helped me rediscover my love for comics over the last few years. I had heard some talk about No Man's Land & Cassandra Cain as a character when it was first released, but didn't get a chance to really dive into the story until seeing this review when it first came out in 2019.
    On a side note, maybe it's due to my exposure to "Crazy Steve" early on, but I assumed the "World's Greatest Detective" meme had a drunk Batman drinking from a bottle while loudly asking about The Joker.

    the whole "DC is run by Creative people" thing reminded me of one of DC's stupid decisions.
    the aging up of Jon Kent.
    I don't know if it was an executive decision but the one who defended himself the most was the writer of that decision Brian Michael Bendis.
    I don't think Bendis understood why people loved Jon. I don't think he understood the sizable fanbase that was created over Supersons which sucks because Supersons is what got me into DC comics.
    All because he thought the story of Superman's son wasn't as interesting if he was a 10 year old.
    and what did we get from that decision?
    another Legion of Superheroes book that has Superboy... whoopee...
    Ever since Bendis left, Tom Taylor has been doing a great job picking up the pieces and letting us love Jon in a whole new way.
    But DC still let Bendis make that story and they have been doing their damnest to keep Supersons fans satiated through the digital first comic.
    but the question must be asked
    why'd they let the story get passed in the first place?

    And as much as I still hope for and look forward to one done for Stephanie Brown? I kinda want you to do one for Harper, if only because a) they're getting more attention lately being in Young Justice and b) I think they're probably the most interesting member of the Batfam, being one of the few who became a part of the Batfam by their own volition.

    This was a pretty fun retrospective.
    And while I must admit, I'm not a comic book fan and I prefer Barbara as Batgirl, Cassandra is a really great character and her story is a powerful one, showing that despite how someone tries to raise and control another, life can still find a way and one can choose their own path. Cassandra was trained to be a killer since birth, but she didn't like killing after doing it once and choose a different and better life.

    For anyone curious, especially since I think she's back to her original backstory again, what they did was make Nora Fries...NOT a Fries. She's Nora ROBERTS, the first test subject for cryonics, and Victor, in his deranged mental state, imagined himself as her husband, despite her being frozen decades before he was born(old enough to be his grandmother, according to Batman).
    I found that to be an interesting bit myself, as it played into how most of the Bat-Gallery were people with direct mental disorders causing their issues, and thus, they COULD be helped, if they merely tried to help themselves. It's a thing brought up in that version, the New 52, of Batman...and then dropped like a hot potato because of stupid things they wanted to do. See also the two issues of New 52 batman that our host covered.

I wish it had come with a flashback to the fight between Bruce and Cass to say "This is love," when Bruce lets Cass beat the crap out of him because he knows it's what she needs.
