Another Fun-Filled Fact: The reason for Terra's portrayal during the Wolfman-Perez run was actually due to events going on over at Marvel during that time. See, the X-Men had just welcomed Kitty "Shadowcat" Pryde to their roster at the time and Wolfman even admitted that he was banking on that same perception with readers of the New Teen Titans, in order for the planned twist to work better.

Fun-Filled Fact: The reason why so many readers hated Terry Long was because he was seen as a blatant self-insert of the book's writer, Marv Wolfman, who broke up with his in-story wife so he could romance Donna Troy, one of the characters he was writing (it didn't help that artist George Perez also drew Terry to resemble Wolfman, just to further the whole thing).

@@benwasserman8223 I loved the first two seasons but the latest season was a big step backwards for me. Not saying it was bad I just didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much. I probably would have if it wasn't for two big issues I had with it. Now they are personal biases I have so a lot might not agree. The first being that I loved watching Halo and Brion grow as characters and their romance. Yet they throw that away by the end of the season. And they do so in a way that I hate the most that I see played out way to often in comic book media. Which is they could have solved all of their drama by literally having one conversation with each other and talking about their issues. Yet the writers just have them ignore each other and refuse to talk to each other. Also didn't like how Brion entire growth as a character was thrown away at the end. Loved watching him become a better hero, team member and less hot headed. Yet at the end all of that was meaningless
2nd issue was the Will Harper and Artemis romance. I know I was expecting way to much out of Cherhire to become like a anti hero and settle down with Will and their daughter. But I was fine with that not happening. Just the last thing I wanted to see is Will and Artemis fall in love. As that just grosses me out. As for one Artemis is basically Will's sister in law. And the grosser fact is that she is literally Lian's Aunt. Also feel like another reason they had this romance happen is just so when Wally comes back. They can no have this drama around Artemis now being with Will. So that we can have her make a choice if she goes back with Wally or stays in this weird relationship with her sisters baby daddy.

Truth be told, I think it's actually a really neat idea. Editorial decided that what makes DC super heroes different from all the others is their legacy. They have a history behind them and fans who have grown up reading about their adventures. So, to defeat Perpetua, the Forge of Worlds, and the Batman Who Laughs (or whatever the balls was going on) they needed to embrace that. They were using the energy from failed and broken versions of the DC universe. The heroes realized that the only way to overcome that was to embrace all the good of the stories that have come before.
Yeah, it's kinda what happened at the end of Doomsday Clock and is even one of the explanations the Thought Robot gave for his power but I still like it. Lean on that fourth wall so hard it breaks!

The irony about Dick yelling "Would Batman do this" is the fact that I would 100% see Batman doing that. If he was stuck out in the woods with other hero's all trying to yell about their feelings and emotions. Batman even without the influence of a villain would instantly try and get out of it by blowing up the entrance to a cave and being stuck inside of it away from the emotions.

Boy this retrospective takes me back. It wasn't the first AT4W review I ever watched, but it was the one that turned me into a regular viewer. Watched it all the time after school.
Think I commented on this back in the Heroes in Crisis review, but a couple of my favorite Titans weren't even part of the main team all that long. They were Pantha and Baby Wildebeest. I thought they had cool designs and a half-funny half-sweet mother-son relationship.
It's kind of surprising that they haven't been brought back or rebooted in any way since Infinite Crisis. Cat girls are incredibly popular character types and given how beloved Baby Groot and Baby Yoda have become, I'm sure that people would be just as receptive to Baby Wildebeest if he was portrayed well.

Smack in the middle of that convoluted story and it was exciting to try to figure it out. Despite it's problems, I still love the clone saga because of that excitement it brought. Trying to figure out who's who and what's going on is one of the joys of continuity heavy comics. It becomes like a puzzle to put together and a hunt for all the relevant comics. One of my favourite things about being a collector of comics is finding a new connection to a story and discovering that issue.

Wow, this brings back so many memories. Although the Titans don't hold anywhere nearly as treasured place in my heart as other characters (not that I hate them, they just aren't my preference), their first series was actually the first comic I remember reading. It was the Brave and the Bold #60 with the "astounding separating man." Even back then as, a child of that generation, I found it corny as hell. Yet there was something about it that I enjoyed. I don't know if it was Nick Cardy's awesome and constantly more expressive art, or Haney's zaney scripts, but it made me have an interest in comics. And this was for somebody who was still learning English lol
I then go the Ding Dong Daddy issue, and looped back around for all their previous appearances up to that time. Mr. Twister, that surfer band from the Showcase issue, the cave boy... very good memories. I stopped reading the series when Mr. Jupiter entered the picture, but in recent years I've gone back to it and appreciate it more. Thank you for bringing back these memories, and I'm happy to hear that it was the same team (though a different era) that ignited your passion for comics too!
P.S.- Though I did enjoy both them and the Justice League at the time, both were swiftly eclipsed by the Challengers of the Unknown and especially the Doom Patrol for me. The Silver Age was such a fertile era to capture children's interests! Also, this retrospective has helped me appreciate your favorite era for the characters a lot more, though my favorite will always be the Dan Jurgens run. For some reason the New Teen Titans era never interested me...
Thank you again for tolerating an old man's expressions!

Now that I recall, the DC Archive edition of those first few issues was also what I gave to my nephew when he began to read comics! He came from the library with a volume of ASBAR, believe it or not. He got it because he liked Batman and, I suspect, Vicki Vale's... portrayal. I gave the book a once-over and, failing to discern any sort of coherent plot in it, quickly brought him back to the library where I got him the Archive edition of that, the first Captain Marvel archive, the first Showcase Presents volumes of Superman, Green Lantern and the Flash and the 2nd Volume of the "Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told" trade paperback. Perhaps it was a boomer thing for me to do, but it worked. We bonded over it and have shared our love of comics to this day!

The Titans Retrospective is a great one and just knowing so much about all these various eras of the team really just show how much fun you can have with them and what not to do when trying to make a story. Hopefully one day DC will bring back Danny Chase, as he would be a fun one to see develop.

Aside from certain harsh and ultimately regrettable words concerning the horrible fate of Lian Harper (which ended up being reversed during Convergence, not that it would matter since they'd go back to New 52 after that event), March of the Titans still holds up. I think a large part of that is due to the fan favorite review of JLA/Titans: The Technis Imperative, which is definitely one of the most awesome comics ever made and is certainly way better than Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day. Someone should really make an animated movie adaptation of the Technis Imperative, preferably with the voice actors from the 2003 animated series.
It was fun revisiting the Titans, looking at both highlights like the HIVE and Tartarus, the Kingdom Come Titans, and Donna Troy vs Dark Angel and the poor editorial decisions in the latter half that led to the comic's downfall. I'm not gonna lie, it's both tragic and frustrating that DC threw away not only the entire history of the Titans but also much of the post-Crisis continuity in favor of the New 52. It seems the general idea of any franchise reboot is to throw away what came before and hope audiences will come back for crappy remakes of their favorite stories.
If Convergence, the return of Wally West, or even Dark Nights: Death Metal taught us one thing, it's this: it's still possible to acknowledge DC history while telling new stories that are just as good. Sooner or later, writers and editors will be forced to make a choice: they can constantly reboot the past just for new readers who'll inevitably be turned off by the same crappy story being told over and over again until the inevitable moment where sales have dropped to the point where only another reboot could bring them back up or they can embrace and learn from past continuities in order to build new legacies of stories and new audiences who want to know about past heroes.
I hope you'll do some more Titans related compilations soon, like Graduation Day and New 52 Teen Titans: The Culling...and maybe Cry for Justice and Rise of Arsenal. Until then, Titans Together Forever!

Batman did have shoulder spikes on his cape depending on who was drawing the book. They could have been subtle like when Kelley Jones draws Batman with his cape swept back, or more direct like Phil Jimenez here. Howard Porter was also one to really love drawing shoulder spikes in the JLA 90's run.

  • @eamonndeane587
    @eamonndeane587 3 роки тому +4

I think I've made it no secret that I much prefer the 2003 animated series version of Deathstroke to the comic book's version. The Way Marv Wolfman tried to Play Slade off as a noble mentor figure and tragic figure who was being used by Terra felt really off kilter my opinion.
I agree with you Lewis, Danny Chase was wasted by the Writting Team except for Sacrificial Canon Fodder.
While I'm not really a fan of the Live Action Titans show (they REALLY Botched Trigon in my Eyes), I love Chella Man's portrayal of Jericho in that. He was the main reason I stuck through Season 2.
I'm annoyed that we haven't gotten Trade Paperback reprints for the Dan Jurgens penned Teen Titans book. That was a really refreshing read after the later declining years of Marv Wolfman's book.
I proudly have a Copy of the Technis Imperitive and YES.... It IS as Great as Lewis says it is.
The Editorial Meddling with the Second half of the 1998-2003 is just unfortunate. Nightwing and his Team mentoring a group of potential future Titans is a decent Idea, but shoving those DEO characters into stories where they weren't needed just derailed the book.
Jesse Quick's Affair storyline feels like a rejected CW script. YUCK
The Rewrite for Epsilon's identity... I have no words..... except for "ANDREW HELFER! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!!!?????"
Graduation Day deserved to be Burned on this Show. Donna and Omen DESERVED Better.

I think this is probably one of the best retrospectives of the 'Teen Titans' ever made. It's a shame that nowadays, when people think of 'Teen Titans', it's usually 'Teen Titans Go', which is a mockery of both the original series, and the comics as a whole. Yet, somehow it's outlasted the original show, and eclipsed the very presence of the comics. That's really depressing because The Titans deserve much better than this.
