Arthas is my favourite cookie cutter hero turned villain while having the right intentions, it's not an original take but it's so perfectly executed in an already outstanding and intricate universe, pure shakespearean perfection.
It likely works because Arthas actually has a surprisingly logical descent into his madness, brought upon by a chain of terrible events he experienced, and another chain of events that he enacted. One can see how he as a hero was perfectly logical and prideful, so the Lich King exploited both of those traits to cause Arthas to pursue the logical result of culling Stratholme (seriously, he did nothing wrong here), and having Mal'Ganis constantly goad Arthas' pride into seeking vengeance. It's just that while Arthas remained consistently logical and prideful, his morality degraded in the pursuit of these, as putting down Mal'Ganis who he was told was the source of the Scourge was a logical pursuit to end the plague forever while driven by the pride of desiring to avenge so much death of the citizenry. It's a perfectly executed hero-to-villain transformation because it makes so much sense and happens in a manner where it makes even better sense.
He wasnt really a cliche hero. He did terrible things for the greater good but once he obtained frostmore, he turned into a cookie cutter villain. Literally started doing evil for the sake of evil. Mainly because he was under mind control.

Arthas didn't lose the light until he picked up Frostmourne, he heals with it in the campaign and his mace even glows yellow before he makes his pledge with miridon, aside from that, pretty epic video, ty for posting it
Actually if i remember correctly he did (gameplay wise no he didn't for obvious reasons) he nearly gains it back after trying to SAVE mirradin only for frostmourne to call to him can't have our soon to be lich king going back to the light now can we
@@disappointedparents9406in the story his connection to the light is doubted for the first time after stratholm since all his friends abandon him when he tries to save his kingdom... but the light itself doesn't truly abandon him until he forsakes it for frostmourne...the cave guardians would of ripped him apart without it (they are in the lore too, not just the RTS)
Seriously the best story Blizzard have ever made in the Warcraft universe in my opinion. Hits me every time. Good gone evil and the character build up is so intriguing. Well explained, hirumaredx!
Until Arthas turned on the mercenaries I actually agreed with him, still do for the most part. He did what he thought was right no matter how hard it was. Sure killing innocents in Strathholme appears barbaric but their fate was already sealed and a quick permanent death was the greatest mercy they could be given. He did become to focused on the big picture that he overlooked the smaller details but in the end his goal was to protect the planet.
What about when he disbanded the silver hand after they refused to purge Stratholme? Even if you support the culling of Stratholme, I don't think you can support that.

8:16 Arthas was like'' You know there is this this an rare artifact called Skull of Gul'dan it's you'rs it's yours if you take it, i dont wan't it tho''
Bro just imagine VR comes out one day where you're in the actual game and this is the final raid for the expansion. You flyin overhead in the raging snow and wind while THOUSANDS of players are marching towards the citadel for the last raid not knowing that this is part of the Lich Kings plan. EPIC!
Always strikes me that Arthas basically becomes crazy and then the greatest threat to the living because he was the only one courageous enough to do what needed to be done in Stratholm, basically sacrificing himself and his sanity to do so. What about the others? They ALL turned their back on him, still being content with letting him deal with the problem without them having to get involved.
Though his story isn't the most original (he's basically just the Warcraft Darth Vader), he is probably my favorite video game villain. I remember thinking about killing him, before ICC came out, just thinking "they made this guy is too bad ass...how do you kill death?" Awesome raid, capped with an awesome boss fight
@@johnfranky2896 The video explains it pretty well. Arthas became increasingly brutal in his efforts to save his people. This was the state he was in when he got Frostmourne from the ice, and the voice (Ner'zul) in the blade took advantage of this over-zealous brutality. It essentially convinced Arthas that he had to do even more terrible things to save his people...until Arthas became totally indoctrinated, and ruined his own kingdom. Only then was he truly evil (imo).
I really love the quest, where you sneak into this meeting of the cult to destroy arthas' heart because it's so funny that everybody has these cloaks so the cultists don't notice that you're not one of them and then tirion comes in with this huge ass sword (that the ashbringer is) on his back and nobody notices it xD
Nice artwork. So judging by what the lore says, arthas the lich king was a bad tactician since all of his friends were killed and he always barely made it in all the major fights.
Well his plan was to turn the greatest heroes into undead so maybe he threw his friends under the bus to train them? It would've worked too if he killed Tirion first before messing around with the champions.
I dunno man, he was a hairs breath away from his master plan succeeding. It does make you think though - if arthas was holding back during our fight with him, how strong was he really? What would've happened if he wasn't holding back?

We still didn't destroy his philactery as far as im aware of so he's still alive
BROthuzad is the single person id like to have as a friend. He looks out for you. He 🅱️atrols undead thots that are sexually frustrated and try to get child support from you. Works extra hard so you can have it easy. Was kelthuzad the peak of loyalty?
Nope. He's dead.
Like, dead dead. His soul, accoriding to chronicles is lost in the shadowlands.
@@andreware2483 Sorry but until his phylactery is destroyed he cannot be considered truly dead.
@@gamefan56 So, your logic > Blizzard Entertainment lore?
Sure, Jan…
That one villain that I somehow always adore since childhood. A shame that his story was ended with a meh... Fook now I'm sad over it.
You forgot the best arthas quote after frostmourne shattered : "Here I stand , a lion before the lambs and they do not fear !"
Really appreciate your work Hiru :)
So many memories watching this story, I played that warcraft game a long time ago. And boy, I was shocked that I was playing the bad guy in that story and I didn't realized that until he got the cursed sword.

huh Didn't know that Arthus lost the ability to use the light. Good video!
3:18 it's adorable how arthas looks like a giant with a bunch of mini-me's in that shot. Like all the important people should just be bigger versions of the people following them
Arthas and Illidan met before in Kalimdor where Arthas used illidan to take the skull of gul'dan. The were evenly matched
The amount of work put into this, wow. This deserves way more views. Glad I stumbled upon it.
YAY! I love this series :) the art is 100% spot on!

also Ner'zhul: **kills demons**

Ngl, light of the seven would’ve been the perfect song to put in when you started talking about Stratholme
Now I'm going to open a new tab to play Light of the Seven at the same time. Thanks for the idea.
I would love more villains Corners. These are really good at condensing the info down for those new to wow.
Super cool video, love the series and the art works is incredible Keep them coming!!
Brings back villains corner. ❤️
Ironically, in WoW, one of your quests is going back in time and HELPING Arthas destroy Stratholme!!!
That broken "#1 Best Friend" Mug actually hurt.
The drawings are ADORABLE!
Hell yeah! I was so hype for this! I'm so happy I found this channel, I love the villains corner
I LOVE these series! Keep them coming, please!
Also, awesome drawings, thanks to Rachel and her hard work ^^

His Lich King crown🎵 🎼Blizzard please buff Arthas NOW
Seriously the best story Blizzard have ever made in the Warcraft universe in my opinion.
As a guy who doesn't play WoW but just genuinely interested in what happened to arthas after warcraft 3, i thank you for the awesome vid! Short and precise and the illustrations are really on point.
Love these vids...and love the drawings
The art and the in-depth story of the villains are very good. Keep up the awesome work, guys.
Love your videos, I saw your post and I couldn't wait for the vid ^^
I love this series so much. For the love of all that is unholy, please never stop it.
Dear Thrall,
Enclosed you will find my highest recommendations for my finest warrior, xDarkKnightxx. Formerly a huntard of the burning crusade, this loyal soldier has rerolled death knight in hopes of soloing the forces of icecrown. I’m sure he will be of great use to you until he rerolls demon hunter and legally changes his name to “Skilladin” in Legion.

8:26, 9:03 despite being villains, they were truly bros, for real. Arthas, saying "friend" when he was saying good bye to Kelthu, bruh, the feels-
"I call dibs on his horse!" Haha, nice one .
I like all your videos but this series is my favorite. I hope you get enough views to keep it going!
"And for some reason, doesn't order all of the undead to just jump into a volcano"
Hiru, I adore your channel, but I literally live for the villains corner. WoW lore is the absolute best, and the way you tell the stories, coupled with the AMAZING illustration, makes it even more enjoyable. MOAR PLZ (esp Medivh). Thank you!
These are better in every way than Nobbel´s extremely long and boring videos! Again and again, this is amazing, you are amazing, Rachel is amazing and I´m bowing down for you. Good job indeed.

Arthas was like'' You know there is this this an rare artifact called Skull of Gul'dan it's you'rs it's yours if you take it, i dont wan't it tho''
18:35 where can I get that picture for a background!? So dope!
That's from the World of Warcraft Chronicles, you might be able to find it as a scan somewhere. The art really is amazing!
Bro just imagine VR comes out one day where you're in the actual game and this is the final raid for the expansion. You flyin overhead in the raging snow and wind while THOUSANDS of players are marching towards the citadel for the last raid not knowing that this is part of the Lich Kings plan. EPIC!
Villain's Corner is my favorite series in your channel, Hiru!
20:50 "There be a must lich always king."
Lol the background text.
I remember thinking about killing him, before ICC came out, just thinking "they made this guy is too bad ass...how do you kill death?"
Awesome raid, capped with an awesome boss fight
Love the early vids!
I'm glad! I wasnt sure if any of my youtuber members actually watched the early vids or not lol
I’m glad to see this series back! I loved these!
@@Zeik188 Uuuh... the one shoting
Still not over my man, Arthas id back and we will need your videos again
mURadin, not mirradin. Still love ya tho!
so the lich king was preparing us for something all this time, i hope we will revisit him in WoW soon.

i watch a LOT of your videos and your knowledge of the game as well as your story telling skills are very impressive ... love it!
Deathwing? Garrosh Hellscream? The Sha of Anger?
What a wonderful telling of the Lich King's story. Bravo.
It's funny how easy it is to infiltrate Arthas's castle
Wow! So many details! And as much as I love Warcraft 3, we didn't get this many details, but it is what made me love the Warcraft lore overall.
