Black is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on 24 February 2006 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox video game consoles. The game is notable for its heavily stylized cinema-inspired action as well as its award winning sound quality and focus on destructive effects during gameplay.
The gameplay is essentially a straight forward first person shooter. Players can only carry two weapons at a time; therefore, strategy is needed when choosing weaponry, with weapons differing in characteristics. The player can also carry grenades, which can be thrown without switching weapons. Land mines and grenades can be detonated prematurely by shooting them.
The game is mission-based, with each mission separated by a cut scene video. On harder difficulties, there are more objectives that must be completed before the player can progress. These extra objectives involved collecting various intelligence documents, blueprints, or destroying parts of the environment. These are all indicated by the HUD cross-hair changing color when the player points at the relevant object.
Successful completion of the objectives over all missions in all difficulties above 'Easy' results in the awarding of Silver Weapons (infinite bullets) and unlocking the M16-A2 (40mm underslung grenade launcher attachment) as the starting default weapon with infinite 40mm grenades. When unlocked, these features are permanent and cannot be removed without starting a fresh storyline. - Ігри
I remember playing this game 24/7 when i was a kid, found almost all the secrets and guns by myself.
Magnum was OP broken, explains why it was the best gun, too bad ammo was so rare.
I guess your emulator doesn´t support the sky texture.
+TomLehockySVK Yup, the game look actually more prettier on my PS2
this game is still to this day not perfectly emulated, but there is a trick to fix the "no sky" issue he just probably didn't know how
TomLehockySVK nah bro, why do you think the game is called black
EricPaz it looks more prettier on the Xbox
lol ive never played the game and i thought it was just always night time hahahahaha
How the hell do you talk about this game without mentioning the sound design? They actually did something unique with the recording separating guns into different frequencies so they could overlap more effectively and create an absolute symphony of chaos. Not to mention they're the best sounding guns on the PS2, period. There is literally no other reason this game is worth noting. The sound design was revolutionary and completely overlooked by the industry in general.
✌🕵👍
It is gun porn.
Okay calm down
It's just a game dude
"No other reason this game is worth noting?" How about the fact that it's, you know, A GOOD GAME?
Gorgeous PS2 game to be honest.
ps2 psh it looks more like early ps3 game
+Dandramere That was my first thought
I played Black when it came out, it was the best game i had ever played, still is to a large degree.
Nope, Black was missed by many , who had already jumped to the Ps3.
Also on Xbox
Why is the sky *BLACK!* (No pun intended)
Most likely run on emulation.
PCSX2 and Renderware skyboxes don't really agree on all that much.
Brettbren The pun was clearly intended.
You clearly intended that pun
Because of shitty emulation. So pun intended
I remember that from all my Xbox games collection, this one had that really cinematic, modern feel, almost as if it was Next Gen. Still surprises me how well it holds up.
I remember, this is the game where you enter a bathroom and leave that room with only debris left in it. :P
+JaapioNL That's not a game, that's two hours after eating Taco Bell.
@@BlackStripePres -- LMAO!! 😂😂
Black was a pretty brutal FPS for me
This game blew my mind when it first came out. One of my all time fave shooters for the ps2
Sir, your channel is a true FPS encyclopedia! You've earned yourself a subscriber!
And as such, I have a complaint: you've covered the Resistance series for the PS3 and NOT the Killzone series?!?!?!
Cheers from Brazil!
+Claudinê Freire Thanks for the sub.
+Claudinê Freire Right on! Brazil here as well, though I'm not actually Brazilian, I've been living here for a couple of years now on business.
I agree no killzone?! That was a ps2 god game and goes on to be a ps3 and ps4 god game
+Claudinê Freire Well request this on his forum on Steam. In there you can request several times for this. and you not the only one who request Killzone for a review
+Josiah Hamilton ps4 god game? What? Shadowfall was very generic, and quite boring. Barely finished.
If only modern shooters would make you feel the impact of your bullets like that.
I remember one of the biggest flaws about the game being the fact that it took too many hits to kill the enemy. The horrible checkpoint system was certainly bothersome too though, as were the other flaws you mentioned. It was a very entertaining game for its time in spite of its flaws though.
i liked the check point issue, i hate in games when dying just ,means back to checkpoint 2 seconds back. dying gotta mean something. And as for bullet count, head shots took them down in 1 or 2 hits.
Also it's very easy to die, you have to be careful because enemies are everywhere. I want to go and kill them in fast pace action not hide and watch every move.
I always assumed that the reason the enemies were able to take so many hits is that they were wearing body armor.
@@bollockchopmitchell3281 that means do you would hellblade ? like
I know this comments old as hell, but i remember just getting stuck on the asylum level and just couldn't get past it for the life of me so the game was just over there for me, which kinda sucks, but it is what it is I guess, and that's what made black so fantastic regardless. It's no-handholding, if you can't do something, you're shit out of luck, attitude.
Had this game on the PS2 and enjoyed it for the most part, especially that giant bridge level, but toward the end of the game it just became absolutely ridiculous. All throughout the game the enemies were massive bullet sponges, but when the game suddenly swarms you with shield guys and rocket snipers _in addition_ to the regular slew of bullet sponges, things go from challenging to total bs.
I finally managed to beat the game, but mostly ended up replaying my favorite levels over and over.
Black was awesome, but it really punishes you for charging headlong like some online ass. It's very what's the word REALISTIC that way. You can't just fly thru a warzone full of enemies looking for you and not get killed. It's a sophisticated game for methodical killer-gamers who stalk their prey. But it was also full of minor annoying traits (no jump, extreme linearity, limited access to weapon selection, etcetc), which i got over in favor of playing it thru 20 (or 40) times. It obsessed me. There really should have been a franchise. This deserved a full fps treatment, altho what they did was minimalist genius at work. The Bridge was my favorite of the few missions (8, sadly).
I love the cqb level with 4 riotshield boys with tons of enemies. The room was unrecognizable after the carnage.
If you're looking for another really good console FPS from the sixth gen, I can really recommend Urban Chaos: Riot Response. It's a great pastiche of violent cop movies with challenging gameplay, and anticipated a lot of the game design tropes that are fairly inescapable these days. Plus it was made by Rocksteady (The guys who made the Arkham games), so you know you're in good hands.
Also, you might want to add an addendum when you emulate that you already own an official version of the game. I don't want EA flagging you.
My favorite PS2 FPS so far :D
Masterpiece of a game
This was one of my favourite ps2 games back in the day.
It still is my most favorite FPS for PS2!
@@christopherlh4379 Like Street Racing Syndicate, this is an unofficial Vin Diesel game.
Area 51 was awesome too, needs a remaster.
Black can be played methodically or like a crazy man, depending on your desire and skill level.
i know im 2 month late but to fix the "no sky" issue before a level load you have to be in software mode and when the loading is done switch back to hardware mode and there you go!
the hotkey to do that by default is F9
Dude, i thought this game was so badass as a kid
silver gun achievement baby
hey matey love all ya revies on the old school games I still play em quite a bit of the time because expectaions are really low nowdays :)
I got this game back when it first came out. I played it on a large screen, with a surround sound system.
That shit was intense.
will you review The Thing?
A solid review of an old favorite. The original Xbox port looks & plays best. My only issue with the game is the God-awful check point system where if you have to stop playing in the middle of a level & restart the game you're screwed having to start the entire level over.
Gmanlives reviews are the best I would love to see a review on cold winter ps2 game
Playing this game on xbox with a custom soundtrack on the system was one of the greatest things ever. Having Ave Maria from the cowboy bebop soundtrack playing in the background while you're destroying everything was epic. And I also like how some of the gun sound effects were taken from some classic action movies.
Thanks for this review and for all the rest. I officially love your channel now. :)
god i loved this in highschool, first time playing i laughed like a madman killing everything in sight, shooting a rpg into a building and seeing every bit of glass exploding out of it
Amazing how a little bit of particle effects can make a game look quite a lot better than some more recent games.
Great review! I remember playing this a lot when it was released. I think it's a great run n' gun kinda game (if you want to play it like that) with great visuals and it offers quite a challenge. You pointed out most of the flaws that this game has, especially the checkpoint system. I also noticed that the emulator that you are using, doesn't render the skybox (?) at all.. Looks weird that the sky is black. Even if it suits the name... :D
Yeah got a few weird graphical glitches here and there.
Hey - love your videos! Can you review the Incredibles games? They were released on both consoles and PC
I remember when this came out I was amazed by the graffix, especially with the guns..everyone that had a ps2 was talking about this game..
A very good review of a sweet BD present.
I personally enjoyed the open areas cause it allowed a more tactical feel such as in the second level, a large forest at night, choosing what path and weaponry really added to the replay value.
my biggest annoyance, besides the silver weaponry bullshit you couldn't turn off, was a complete lack of Coop considering 3/4 game you have another NPC beside you.
either way good game, good review, fingers crossed for an Unreal review
I remember thinking this game was the most cinematic game ever when it came out.
As a kid this game blew my mind because I had only played COD and i had never seen such like action and destruction in a game
Great videos like really great video I could watch these for hours
Great review to a great game.
I remember playing this back in the day at the local Virgin Megastore; with a vibrating chair and surround sound. It was epic to me, coming from Quake 2 (I had a weaker PC that time)
Now I have a chance to play this hidden gem.
One thing though; is there a way to optimise it to run better since I had terrible slowdown on the PCSX2; trying to run Urban Chaos Riot Response.
Thanks in advance.
One of my all-time favorite games. I've played through so many times, but I still love firing up my PS2 fat just to play through again.
I forgot to say, congratulations for 100 video milestone.
Eh, couple things I think worth mentioning for the game. First is that, while enemies tend to soak up a ton of damage, a single headshot or explosion will down everyone but the tough juggernaut types. Second, and you obviously didn't get this from the clips you showed, grenades explode when you shoot them, making them enormously effective against groups and those you want eliminated quickly. Third, I don't know where you get this idea that people know where you are in stealth as soon as you kill an enemy. The stealth is functional from what I recall, if not heavily featured, but as soon as you break that stealth it's over. Headshot an enemy with the silenced pistol and nobody comes running. Not to say the game is without flaws, just giving it a fair shake. It is a somewhat generic game without a memorable story or characters to tie anything together, or any unique mechanics aside from the gun porn, but it's a rather fun one.
I LOVED this game when it came out! I bought it when it first came out after keeping up with it from Playstation magazine for months. My main complaint with this game is that every enemy is like a T1000 terminator. Every enemy takes 15+ rounds each, usually a half or sometimes a full mag of direct fire. Unless you get a headshot, so it's just a minor annoyance overall. It was SO much fun trying all the new weapons you found, and seeing what attachments they may have.
man i loved this game! was mad they didn't just make it for the next gen consoles since it was literally right before they came out
Ever heard of Urban Chaos: Riot Response? its on PS2 and (I think) PC. I'd love to see a take on that
also, the reload animation will change between theres enemy around u or no,every single gun.
The original Xbox was the best way to experience this, really wish there would have been a PC port
For PS2 that looks fucking incredible. I remember my brother playing it back in the day, but my mind had "retconned" it into an early PS3 game
I actually ended up playing this game multiple times and through all its difficulties, from a channel, and turns out the Magnum can actually be found a lot sooner. You just got to find it. Unfortunately I can't remember which mission.
Nice Vid! I wonder whatever became of the humourously gobby Scotsman who was connected in the making of this Game? (not heard of him after he walked out on Codemasters "BodyCount" in like 2010 maybe)
...I've long felt that the shooters future lies in 'Micro-Destructability' of environments - really tearing through places and leaving a wake of shattered glass, brickwork and plasterboard debris
(so that just shooting a cupboard full of cups and dishes is super-enjoyable/cathartic)
I remember playing this game at my cousins house. It was lots of fun. Can you review Mercenaries 2. I think that's what it called if I can remember correctly.
Never got around to playing this back in the day. Saw its availible as an OG Xbox backwards compatible gmae on the Xbox One. Might check it out.
Hi, really enjoy your reviews! Could you maybe review the PS2 shooter Cold Winter sometime? Loved to play it back in the day, must be 10 years now... I remember it fondly, maybe you'll like it too ;-)
Some of your reviews are quite old and pretty good, how do you not have more subscribers....
I was excited to get this finally in 2008. It was scratched, so the non skippable cutscenes broke my progress after the forest mission. Could never finish it.
Omg I've played this games for hundreds and hundreads of hours. I miss those days playing this game a late night with my uncles... you should also review Gran Turismo 4, i got GT5 and 6 but I never enjoyed myself more or even played more than GT4.
Can you review Bodycount, the "spiritual" successor to this?
HairyHog really? huh...I'll have to check that out. I enjoyed BLACK
It has the feeling of Black without any of the satisfaction.
So not worth getting
Pretty much.
Sad face
Hey GGGman. If it's possible to get a Original Xbox emulator working, you think you can review Breakdown?
I can look into it.
Can this game be played with mouselook under pcsx2?
I remember unlocking silver weapons with unlimited ammo
Same
but how is it that the game cannot be released what is the problem?
The dynamism in the environment is really great
I used to play this game a lot, the last section of the final level is tough. Thank you Gggmanlives for the good memories, I remember a sequel of this game was planned but Im not sure what had happened to it.
There is a spiritual successor to this game called Bodycount. I heard it wasn't too good.
The game is Black 2, it was supposed to be released for both ps3 and xbox, the game is still tba. I think the game was announced way back in 2006 ;d. I think ps3 and xbox are the last true next gen consoles ;(
How can you play with 2 players?
This and Urban Chaos:Riot Response were my favorite fps on PS2.
I remember this being a game that quickly wore out its welcome.
Why is the skybox broken?
I did notice that the emulator didn't pick up the skybox though, but yeah, having save states for thesse LONG levels is a lot better.
My biggest problem was the bullet sponge enemies.
The thing I loved about this game was the gun play and sound designfor it's time. Even the small pistols sounds like it got a kick to it. And the game don't treat it like a peeshooter. And you pointed out that stealth elements is a waste of time. Tho I have the Xbox version. The issue I had was that the AI do react if they see or hear you, but the "aggro" range is really small. Sound suppressor was a waste of time as when you moved to the next room or area. They were all in "patrol" mode. And you had the stealth element again.
To my understanding this is the sequel to the pc game vietnam black ops right? I remember playing that game back in 2000 and while it was a shitty fps, it was entertaining enough for me to finish.
You forgot to mention that most weapons have almost twice the capacity they would in real life, and the enemies are almost all wearing heavy body armor, making it like welding.
the only issue that i have with this game are the checkpoints, it's like a bullet hell where if you die, you start from a stage you passed 5 stages ago
Such a great FPS! I just started replaying it on Xbox one X with the 4k patch 👍
My god I used to love playing this on the ps2
I still do! It's one of my most played games!
good review, game looks better on actual hardware though, PCSX2 can't do the post processing so you're missing out the bloom and the DOF
I loved this game back in the days.
i still play it soo much fun we need more like this
I really liked this game. I completely agree with the annoying unskipable cut scenes and lengthy check points. I actually like it when you're getting fired at from all over. Bits flying and panic sets in. The part that really annoyed me was the difficulty of the last levels. That shootout in that hanger type area (memorys lacking a bit) near the end of the game, jeez the amount of times I replayed that, talk about frustrating. Love the feel of the weapons tho and they sound great. Killzone was a huge let down for me. I played the first couple of levels and didn't gel with it at all.
Will you ever come back to this game and re-review it?
Looks like a pretty good game. Thanks for the review man!
8 years later and wishing they remade this!
This is one of the best FPS ever...I played this game for days and days...it was and still is one of the best ever, gameplay, graphics, music and history all great!!!
The game seems decent, but the level length and setting kept me away from it when it was around at my house. The setting felt military without the cool big scale battles I loved in MOH (that was the sort of thing I liked about military shooters when I was younger), but the game also lacked the imagination I felt other games like Timesplitters, or Turok evolution had, so I was just uninterested with it. However dad played it to death, and kept replaying it with cheats and something about a special silver weapon. By the time I was truly ready and willing to play the game (like two years after we had it), the disc stopped working.... really sad. Now I keep hearing about how it was some incredible cult hit FPS experience that needs reviving.
well, it was a pretty good game, but timesplitters was much better if it makes you feel better.
Damn, this could easily pass off as an early PS3/360 launch title.
you need to do kill zone series, first one was interesting, second was amazing, 3rd more less of like 2nd and 4th is crap
bullets do actually kick up dust like that its not an over exaggeration just trust me on that
in the Army at the range if a lot of lanes are open the bullets hitting the concrete and dirt mound basically make a smoke screen
slowdowns were commonplace on the ps2 for this game, i used to play it for hours on end
I remember this looking way better on my xbox. It had a sky texture for one.
The game did look a lot better on Xbox
You should check out Geist on the Gamecube
its sweet
Kind of sad that you got the PS2 version because I remember the Xbox version having a lot more detail on the guns when you would reload where it would focus in on your gun to show a pretty nice for the time texture going through really nice animation
With the custom soundtrack, damn its really good !!
can u not use iron sight?
do a review of Kill Zone
Couldn't play this game fully as a kid and I only did certain levels but damn, watching my dad wreck some ass made this my favorite game of all time, wearing headphones will just pump the shit out of your heart, the sound design is so amazing
One of my top 10 favorite game for PS2.
ahh the game that me and my brother played when we where young good times
Michael Giacchino only co-authored the main theme, Chris Tilton actually composed the rest of the music.
No one likes a know it all
What about the ricochet?
Thanks mate for this. My favourite PS2 game. Although I do enjoy your pc reviews, it's good to see you review console games. The ps2 was the last great console for me before I turned 'PC convert' lol. Today all consoles are is just pcs flipped on their side.
I think that's my biggest problem with consoles these days. A console shooter here and there is pretty fun, but almost every game released now is just something I'd have a way better experience with on PC. Not to mention there was way more variety among retail games back in those days.
Man, I've been looking for a good review of this game. Graphics looked pretty dull in the clips used, especially the black sky (???), it looks really good on the XBox. Hell, even today I still play it every now and then.
i think its a glitch with the emulator. yeah i play it on 360.
This emulation your playing on removes A LOT of the shine (for lack of a better word) that it originally has. The gun reflections and the gold/black filter is gone, the textures were also lower-res. It may be minor to some people but this gritty tone is what I think made the game stand out. Everything looks very cartoony now.
I bet this game still sounds freaking amazing.
This game brings back memories
