The last level in Spetrinev Gulag was one of the most brutal things I've ever played. They basically threw everything and the kitchen sink at you all at once. You had normal assault rifle enemies, heavily armored shotgun enemies, bulletproof riot shield enemies, RPG enemies, and heavy machine gun enemies. The absolute worst part was that very final shootout in that deep underground bunker that just felt endless. Luckily you feel the biggest sense of accomplishment when you actually do blow it up.
6:18 I just replayed that COD4 level and it was a big slap to my nostalgia brain cause I hated it. I remember loving it back in the day. And then I realized that my love for it was actually just the ending when you have to defend yourself at the ferris wheel. That still held up but everything before was that on rails crap which I've come to despise in games.
The problem is that the mission is kind of a one-trick pony, at least for me anyway. Once you experience the graphics, atmosphere, and details once, they don't really impress you the second time around. I think it's because of the lack of freedom. You have to fight or sneak through the exact same way every time. The only time you actually get a good amount of freedom is on the Farris wheel, where you can choose where to set traps and where you can camp. This map lacks freedom in exchange for a more cinematic approach. Take a game that does freedom right, like Dishonored, for example. You can replay it over and over again because of the number of choices and approaches to each mission. It makes the game still feel fresh each time you play.
Dude, i just have to say this: your videos are so fucking good. I really don’t like UA-cam notifications but you are one of the few channels where i have enabled notifications. Your content is so good and i really wish you had more subscribers. That’s all i wanted to say, keep it up man
I love that you consistently use "Flashpoint" from _Legendary_ as the background music for your videos. It's one of the most underrated themes for a game out there.
Watch this video while ago and ended up playing to the whole game on most of its difficulties because of this. Even capture gameplay for my own channel. You've kind of inspired me to start checking out oldschoolgames just to capture gameplay of them and have places for them. Especially the ones that don't even have playthroughs or collectible guides. For this game no video collectible guide exist. There's only one written article guide from IGN for this game. This game to me it's honestly more so like Black ops and call of duty 4. Not just for the Hollywood action aesthetic, but it somewhat has the tone of Black ops without the good story of black ops.
2:35 yeah dude the game looks n feel so clean for a ps2 game bro .The crazy part is it also run smooth no fps drop no cutscene freeze ect nothing thts why it was one of the best on ps2
I know this video is old, and you probably won't see this. But, you mentioned the the M203's were modeled after airsoft M203's. You're 100% correct. But you'd be bafflde how long that's continued. I think even some of the recent COD games still have winding wheels on the bottom of the magazines. It's really crazy.
Your intro to this was great. I absolutely loved this game when it came out. But not a single person ive ever met or talked to about it has heard of it. I also thought it was a game that was fairly unknown honestly
@Indigenous Lady I remember spending days at a time beating this game everyway possible. I knew every mission to a T and could prob replay it today and still know where most of the AI is or is coming from lol
Great video, man. You said though that there weren't a lot of games out there that were realistic when it came to firearms when Black came out in 2006 but Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30 came out in 2005 and they were pretty close to the real deal from what I remember (as close as an '05 game could be anyway.) I've heard that the developers actually audio recorded the real weapons firing and the actions cycling and whatnot but I don't know that for sure. Anyway, that'd be a great game to review since it's on Steam if you're looking for suggestions.
Man I had such memories of playing this game back then on the PS2 when I was little. Didn't really understand what was going on with the story since I was a little kid at that time I was playing it but I liked exploring around and shooting stuff. Wonder if there will be a gun showcase video for Black's weapons? The guns there were fun to mess around with.
I play the game on PS-2 and since yesterday I'm playing it on PC thanks to a PCSX2 emulator and it's sooooo much fun! I can still remember the year 2014....I was driven to the elementary school in the morning, the childcare gave delicious food there and when it was Friday we went to the swimming pool with the childcare and at the weekend I slept with my dad and we threw on the PS-2, put on BLACK and started to gamble and ate something along the way....these are times that I will never ever forget! This game shaped my childhood and I will continue to play this game even after 10 years. PS: I really enjoyed going to school at that time. Thanks for the review!
My biggest memory of this game is EA going after a small independent pen & paper RPG called Noir that was released at around the same time because Noir means Black in French! (It was incidentally a Swedish pen & paper RPG, not a French one, and it was inspired by noir films).
Great video. I was a Playstation kid growing up (1 and 2), but also got an original Xbox late in its life. BLACK is one of the games that is truly better on the XBOX, simply because the XBOX is more powerful than the PS2 was. What's interesting is that this game was described as "gun porn" (what you described as "GUNS. LOTS OF GUNS."). I totally agree about the enemies being total bullet sponges. I think what's really great about this game: - The feel of the guns themselves (realistic or not) - The *audio* of the guns (as a matter of fact, I read somewhere that the enemy guns sound at different pitches, for a "gun orchestra" effect. You'll notice this if you play again after reading this.) - The destruction, which, it's not Red Faction-level, but is incredibly satisfying (like blowing up the bell tower with the RPG on the first level) - The *music* (look up the OST on UA-cam; I recommend "Madhouse Mayhem") - The fact that beating the game gives you silver guns with unlimited ammo for your next playthroughs (I normally don't care, but this game is all about guns) You actually CAN play this in PCSX2 with widescreen support (16:9 or 21:9) in *60 FPS* on PC: Check these out (not my videos): - ua-cam.com/video/IzolaPOgG7U/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/Ha1M380PKmE/v-deo.html Granted, like you said in the video, you can "fix" the low resolution problem simply by playing on an Xbox One S or X. But for 60 FPS, you'll want the PS2 version emulated on PC with a 60 FPS patch.
One thing I kinda wish you brought up was how gun sound design was approached like mixing music; every gun in the firefight occupies different frequencies and timbres so that it sounds less like a bunch of discordant noise and more like a wall of percussive sound with a much nicer combined tone
Did anyone else ever notice that the action in this game would match up with almost any music. Also, what happened to playing music and games at the same time?
Weird how you mention this game being a highly marketed product back in the day but I never heard anything about it as a kid, and I was growing up right around the time this game came out. I just remember seeing it pop up in my dad's game library one day and being fascinated by the case, and him telling me I couldn't play it until I was older because it was too "adult" for me.
1:44 if you're talking about the black sky problem, switching to software renderer(F9) before the level loads in and switching back to hardware fixes this problem. Also, playing at resolutions higher than native causes a weird line at a fixed distance from the camera so I'd recommend you play at native resolution.
The enemy health is probably what it is to get more of that excellent audio in gameplay. They specifically offset every individual weapon firing sound so they're all different & distinguishable from another in a huge gunfight.
Really solid game, agree with most every point made. That said, surprised that no one is mentioning that the controls feel kind of like ass. Maybe it's my fault for playing on 360 rather than an OG or XB1 but the controls have a terrible amount of acceleration and the sensitivity is way too low, and can't be adjusted. Cutscenes cannot be skipped and drag on a bit too long for their own good. That said, a proper remake on Frostbite would be perfect :D
The controllers are absolutely fine on the PS2 version, I think it was made with that specific controller in mind. Also, a today's remake by EA would ruin the game with lootboxes, pay to win mechanics, and multiplayer.
@@GunsNGames1 That sounds reasonable, if only my PS2 still worked! lol And that is true, I really like a lot of EA games, I just hate EA, and for that reason. Can only hope that some day the game can be revitalized in some way
Omg now I remember this old game. When I saw the thumbnail I'll be like "hmm black? Why it sound so familiar?"and it just give me a flashback when I use to go to my friend just to play this game together haha
I remember picking this game up in 2006 as a kid and the first mission blew me away, kept playing it since it was unlike anything else I have played at the time and since then. Luckily I still have my original PS2 (the hinged lid model, the slim I think.) that ive had since 2003-04 and it works perfectly. I remember thinking about BLACK throughout my childhood and find myself smiling. Yes the guns looked weird but weirdly cool. Its just a unique FPS game which is a rare title.
@@PvtDutch yes everyone has their own opinion and most people hated it including me and the developers of Black who left the project very early on so it was doomed to be absolute trash from the very beginning
Sadly I missed this game back when I was younger. Now that I'm older and digging into those old games I loved or missed out on, Black has surprised me at how good it looks for a PS2 game! So mad I missed this back when! Would have blown my mind. My only nitpick is theres no x and y axis sensitivity adjustment for the analog sticks. But I'm loving it
I first played this game when i was 6 years old, my dad got it for Christmas from my Mom. He let me play it once and i loved it alot....and i mean ALOT. The graphics of that game were amazing for a 2005 game. The story was....Decent. But the gunplay and the overall gameplay was AMAZING. After i beat the game, i continued to play it until the disc broke. I played this game on my Ps2 for 4 years. Such a masterpiece, i would love to play it again.....sadly i cant.
Hey Jarek, you have covered some of my favorite games from the late 90's and early 2000's era of gaming. One game that I would love to see your take on and that I think you would really enjoy is Full Spectrum Warrior. I had it on the original xbox in 2004 and still play it on steam to this day. It's an interesting take on a tactical shooter where you control two fire-teams in a fictional middle eastern country. You don't really control anyone individually, you just control the teams and give them commands on what areas to cover with there weapons, where to shoot, how they approach certain locations, how they use cover, and the certain weapons they have at their disposal. I think you would really enjoy it since it offers a really unique type of gameplay that I honestly haven't seen replicated.
I don't know, lots of glitches, lots of toxic players, too pay to win, your character can start glitching with a bug called "diseases" that can make your way out of the servers forever, surely needs a massive update. I hear some places a single toxic player is in charge of a area and make the other players prisoners in that area, they call them the "communists".
6:09 From what I’ve seen from your reviews, you don’t really seem to value immersion or pacing that much in games, which is likely why old school shooters are some of your favorites. It’s not a bad thing, but those elements are important to understanding why people would love a mission like all ghillied up. I doubt you’d like Metro either, since a lot of that game is following some guy and shooting occasionally, but in Metro it adds to the horror aspect, as you navigate the dark, dangerous, labyrinthine metro system with your Russian guide leading you through and helping your stay alive.
I definitely value immersion and especially value pacing. Pacing is incredibly important to combat flow. What I don't value is the player being treated like a dummy and having no freedom to play the game on my own terms. I also greatly dislike it when story interrupts gameplay too much, which can also break immersion. Also I've made videos of metro, every one loves metro. Those games are fantastic.
I haven't played Black in years but I'll never forget certain things about it, like the sound of your footsteps. It's like your character's wearing spurs on his boots--every footstep goes ching, ching, ching like you're in a Western. And then there's the incoherent story and the weird lady's voice in your earpiece--even when you were teamed up with another dude--you still had a woman in your ear. Man I loved that bizarre fckn game 😀
The Call of Duty Pripyat sniper mission was so famous because it CoD 4 was released around time when other popular fps dropped - Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. Ps Jarek, you haven't spoken about Stalker games yet!

The absolute worst part was that very final shootout in that deep underground bunker that just felt endless. Luckily you feel the biggest sense of accomplishment when you actually do blow it up.
You brought back all the great memories in that one paragraph alone! It certainly felt endless.
A pure beast of a game back in the day would love to play it again.
Dude, this game was fuckin dope.
I was surprised it was not an online multiplayer game or even a second campaign or something.
Playing this on a TV with big speakers, I can't even explain the eargasm I experienced when I played this as a kid.
That’s all i wanted to say, keep it up man
Awww, I remember this game. I used to play it back when I was an adult.
Man I’m old.
I used to watch my Dad play this years ago and never heard anyone mention it until this video. Thanks for the review 😁
I love that you consistently use "Flashpoint" from _Legendary_ as the background music for your videos.
It's one of the most underrated themes for a game out there.
"Legendary" was a very underrated game, and its soundtrack was amazing!
True!
Michael giaccino Did a fantastisc job on the soundtrack 🎶✅
"its not a game, its an interactive cutscene" exactly, this guy gets it. most cod campaigns were absolutely awful.
Less black Ops 1, 2, WaW, And some modern warfare 1,2 And 3 missions
You mean cod pre-modern warfare 2, yeah it's about gun, take cover, and survival before mw2.
Omg......did he really make a whole video without saying anything about FOV?!?!?! 😲
What's wrong with the field of view???
Console games don't worry about fov since most people play far away from the screen
@@Death_Chopper exactly
Maybe he's an Impostor !!!!
@@Death_Chopper I play close to the TV and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the FOV.
The revolver in BLACK is one of my favourite guns of all time, dude one hands it like a total boss too
Your intro to this was great.
This was a part of my childhood and I'm live in Australia not a hidden gem forgotten maybe
Playing this game with at least a half way decent sound system with the volume turned up is amazing.
One of the best shooting game ever
PS2 😁👍
Love & miss this game so much the bridge level was my favorite
Black is is my favorite FPS of all time. Put a custom soundtrack on and it was a action movie. Loved xbox
I think what's really great about this game:
- The feel of the guns themselves (realistic or not)
- The *audio* of the guns (as a matter of fact, I read somewhere that the enemy guns sound at different pitches, for a "gun orchestra" effect. You'll notice this if you play again after reading this.)
- The destruction, which, it's not Red Faction-level, but is incredibly satisfying (like blowing up the bell tower with the RPG on the first level)
- The *music* (look up the OST on UA-cam; I recommend "Madhouse Mayhem")
- The fact that beating the game gives you silver guns with unlimited ammo for your next playthroughs (I normally don't care, but this game is all about guns)
You actually CAN play this in PCSX2 with widescreen support (16:9 or 21:9) in *60 FPS* on PC:
Check these out (not my videos):
- ua-cam.com/video/IzolaPOgG7U/v-deo.html
- ua-cam.com/video/Ha1M380PKmE/v-deo.html
Granted, like you said in the video, you can "fix" the low resolution problem simply by playing on an Xbox One S or X.
I rly want a remake of this masterpiece of a game
Please don't let EA ruin this creation of art.
Just replayed it and finished it today, still holds up amazingly well for that generation
please review the Starship Troopers game
Oh no.
Oh no.
Oh no.
Ωχ όχι
EDF! EDF!
Having that little dot instead of crossairs took awhile to get used to when I first played it.
I used to watch my dad play this game back then at the living room without a memory card on the second level. And now I completed the game for him
one of the most underrated games ever.
Still easily one of my favorite shooter of all time. Love this game. Still have it.
I miss when EA published games, were like this.
Oh, snap. He bacc with the Blacc!
I had a System of the Down album on my Xbox and that music with this game were perfect.
That's funny, I used to listen to Toxicity while playing Unreal Championship
Geez dawg, the in-game soundtrack is just amazing, and you ruin it?
@@GunsNGames1 That sounds reasonable, if only my PS2 still worked! lol
And that is true, I really like a lot of EA games, I just hate EA, and for that reason. Can only hope that some day the game can be revitalized in some way
Omg now I remember this old game. When I saw the thumbnail I'll be like "hmm black? Why it sound so familiar?"and it just give me a flashback when I use to go to my friend just to play this game together haha
Black is a classic on the PS2.I own it.
loved it on my Xbox, the ablity to use cutom soundtracks in it was great, blasting away to your favourite tunes was great fun
4:37 Well said
Black was the first fps game i played cause i was young and i tell you now this game is the reason i love fps games and play them now
I remember picking this game up in 2006 as a kid and the first mission blew me away, kept playing it since it was unlike anything else I have played at the time and since then.
Review bodycount please since its very similar to black and it's a "spiritual successor" as wel
And it's a bad game.
@@violetshft everybody has their own opinion
@@violetshft a shame too, it could be good but heard the development went wrong which is why the game turned out bad.
I've played on PS3. Sold this trash after 2 days.
@@PvtDutch yes everyone has their own opinion and most people hated it including me and the developers of Black who left the project very early on so it was doomed to be absolute trash from the very beginning

I love XIII back on PS2. Heard they are remastering it. You should review it..... if you haven't already.
I was 17 or 18 when this game came out and the hype for it was real, you could not escape it.
Great game for a 6 year old to play.
Even when I was a kid I noticed the bullet sponges and the annoying fact that I couldn't fire I single shot but I was obliged to use burst fire.
the good old days when i use to play this amazing game, loved that the difficulty kicked your ass… miss playing hard games..

9:00 is this a 100 ROUND BOX FED M16
95 rounds in a 20 round Colt magazine. That's for gameplay porpouses, the enemies don't die with only 3 or 4 bullets.
Is that the Rivals of Aether music in the outro?
You should try this underrated indie simulator, "Life".
he should also check the sequel "death"
Don’t forget about its prequel, “Pregnancy”.
U should check out call of duty finest hour it was a great game growing up keep up the good work man I love what you do
I haven't played Black in years but I'll never forget certain things about it, like the sound of your footsteps. It's like your character's wearing spurs on his boots--every footstep goes ching, ching, ching like you're in a Western. And then there's the incoherent story and the weird lady's voice in your earpiece--even when you were teamed up with another dude--you still had a woman in your ear.
Man I loved that bizarre fckn game 😀
is there a wayfor me to play this game on a PC ? i had it long time ago for my PS2...but i dont wanna play FPS games on a console -.-
Please analyze perfect dark zero
What do the number mean Mason xD every time I go back to black and I see those cut scenes it reminds me of black ops xD
Black.....Ops
The Call of Duty Pripyat sniper mission was so famous because it CoD 4 was released around time when other popular fps dropped - Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl.
