If I could re-write BSG, I would give Bulldog a 6 episode arc. From the flashback, I got the feeling that he may have been a Starbuck predecessor, just like Kat became the successor to Starbuck. How dope would it have been if Bulldog didn't try to kill Adama, saving that part for the final two episodes and instead Bulldog tries to go back into service. So during his arc he's dealing with his PTSD, which he downplays, while showing skills comparable to Starbuck and Kat, surpassing them in some ways. And then while the rest of the viper jocks are finally accepting him as their new experienced colleague that's when he suddenly snaps and tries to assassinate Adama. That would have been so awesome, and twisted! Just as evil as the Cylons plans.

If BSG ever gets rebooted, above all else what I'd want them to do is _actually_ have a plan this time around. The Expanse did, and look at how well that show's running and aging. BSG started strong and got weaker over time because everything was duct tape on top of duct tape. And having a plan could easily allow for things like that six-episode arc for Bulldog.

@@Phoenix-214 the expanse has a bad plan though, hence why it was canceled. Most shows don't do a 40+ year time jump after having loved characters, so they just canned it. For a reboot having time pass is good, look at star trek TOS and TNG, DS9 etc. But not in the same timeline of a single show.

@@umadbroimatroll7918 It's not as bad of a plan as you seem to think. The reason they cancelled the show after Babylon's Ashes was everybody including the authors knew that it was a good stopping point for the story if not the series. Also, they are working on side projects related to the Expanse, which will keep them busy for a while, maybe even long enough for the timeskip to be justified. (24th-century medical tech also means the actors don't need to age all that much to make it work, either.) More than anything else, though, the fact that they _had_ a story planned out ahead of the show puts them head-and-shoulders above most other sci-fi shows, and the fact that they could effectively improvise when something went wrong means that they're good at managing situations where the plan doesn't work properly.
Trek itself is a good example of how one can badly mismanage a series by improvising everything and not having a long-term arc in mind. I would need...God...weeks, probably, to list every consistency error, instance of flawed worldbuilding, forgotten plot thread, and instance of messy characterization. This is not to say that Trek is a bad show, it's still great, but when compared to the Expanse's very nearly total, rock-solid consistency, it provides unquestionable evidence that even having a somewhat flawed plan for an entire series-long plot arc, planned out in almost every minute detail, but just adaptable enough to change on the fly, is a better approach.
What's _really_ ironic is that off the top of my head, the only show in Trek I can name which had a long-term plan was...Picard. Which a lot of people hated until the final season, when Kurtzman went from deconstructing the TNG cast's characters to reconstructing and restoring them. And yes, I know what a _lot_ of people reading this post are gonna say. He doesn't deserve credit for the third season. Now, I know he's made a lot of really questionable choices and rightly bears the blame for a lot of them, but I need to do a little deprogramming here: Actually...the third season _was_ Kurtzman's plan the whole time, Terry Matalas just saw it through.
It was, in fact, the reason Patrick Stewart came back. He didn't want to retread TNG, he wanted this kind of story for his character. Something fresh and interesting, from his perspective. So, in a way, the first two controversial seasons are more his doing than Kurtzman's. Instead of Picard being able to immediately work his way through everything, he actually _wanted_ to play a flawed and deeply conflicted man haunted by past mistakes who needed time to pull himself together. On paper, in a general sense, this _is_ a good idea, but in practice...well, there needed to be better communication with the fanbase, I think. Maybe even to the point of spoiling the fact that Picard was on a redemptive journey. It might have softened the blow for people expecting to see their TNG-era hero instead.
And, as the Expanse has shown, many audience members having a fairly good idea _where_ a story is going to go (In this case, from reading the novels ahead of the show) does not dampen the pleasure of seeing it put onscreen. I think being more open and vocal about their intentions for Picard's character could have saved them from a fair bit of the backlash they received. In fact, it might even have worked _better_ than being intentionally vague about it, because the Expanse changed things from the novels where it was a good idea to do so, to the point that oftentimes, the show is almost like a new draft of the same story to fix perceived mistakes in the novels, so there were still plenty of mostly-pleasant surprises for the novel fans watching. This makes me think that for Picard, more detailed advance planning for the series-wide character arcs instead of partial improvisation on the fly with only a general idea where they were going to take things in the end might well have given a greater sense of structure and consistency to all three seasons, thus improving them.

USS EXETER It’s my least favourite episode of the entire series. Sure, there were a couple of other clunkers, and Adama’s backstory in this episode is fascinating, but you could literally skip this episode and it wouldn’t make the slightest difference to the overall narrative- you never even see or hear from
      bulldog again for a start.
I say this as not just a fan of the show, but someone who has friends that worked on it, but this is definitely a “filler” episode.
Still, it really says something about the quality of a show that even stinkers like this affect the view of the series overall.
      So say we all.

@@grandpathong Yeah, but the thing was - he wasn’t (ie a recurring character) and it just makes you wonder why they bothered breaking the script if they couldn’t move it forwards, maybe that’s the very reason for me that I hate it, because it feels like it just doesn’t belong to the series. The Twelve Colonies of Kobol is would be as the Star Wars universe in the old canon, if you follow the dates, I try to pix together a coherent calendar from the first Cylon War, and funny enough, 2003 the day that this show was aired, is exactly forty years in this calendar and when the original show first aired, if my math is correct, the First Cylon War began in 21302 Year 57, making the genocide of the Twelve Colonies the year 21342 Year 03.
