The state of gun violence in the US, explained in 18 charts

- America doesn't have a gun problem, it has several of them.
These charts and maps break down the scope of the problem: bit.ly/2odFYVK
No other developed country in the world has anywhere near the same rate of gun violence as America. The US has nearly six times the gun homicide rate as Canada, more than seven times as Sweden, and nearly 16 times as Germany.
The debate over gun regulation in the US seems intractable, but there is one fact that both sides can agree on: Mass shootings are just the tip of a very complicated problem.

So far 14,000 homicides in Mexico this year.
Why , because people have no guns to protect themselves!!!
Where is the chart on that!!!
Why is my country not on 2:23 ? Korea has the most suicides in the world and also is in g20
And has zero weapon suicides
FREEDOM 1 first off, we’re discussing developed nations.. this does not include Mexico. Also, Mexico has issues with the cartel. America doesn’t have this problem.

Matthew North because they took the guns from the innocent!
In Netherlands almost every one use bicycles for traveling within the cities and due to that there are lots of bicycles and due to that there are lots of bicycle thieves. And ignore Jason D comment he thinks guns can solve anything and without guns human race can't survive but in reality its otherwise.

Ahh good to see you’re going away from the issue here. Obviously knife crime rates are the same, there are little to no knife regulations in most countries.
How about drug crime stats, you hold 50 grams of meth in China, you are a dead man.
In terms of mass shootings it always appears that the main problem is the lack of communication between the police and mental health services. Here in the UK if you want a shotgun or rifle you apply to the police and they do a background check, they also interview you and if you suffer from mental health problems you get refused. There is better communication later on if someone has a licence but then develops mental health issues. Also this licence needs renewing every five years. You also need a reason to own a shotgun or rifle; so you live on a farm and need it for pest control. Wanting to own a cool rifle isn't good enough. It's a pretty good system but there are still illegal guns out there. Just less of them because it is so strictly controlled. EDIT: and the reason I mention mental health is because 90% of the time the person who becomes a mass shooter very often has mental health issues which if the authorities were aware of earlier they could have reacted to and maybe prevented the act.
They also don't tell you about the crime in your state run media because if the gun wasn't registered it isn't their problem. Sorry, a few friends from UK talk and say "aight".
no guns
no problem
You take away the guns you give the government all the power
Oh... like in Mexico? Open your eyes and stop eating all the bullshit the government tells the media to feed you!
+Not Who You Think I Am
how does owning a gun mean that the government owns all the power? are you saying that we wouldn't be able to riot if the gov become corrupt or something? this nation is defined by power to the people, we are the ones who make and amend laws. it would be our fault if the country goes to ruin, since no one seems to give a crap anymore, am I wrong?
Not Who You Think I Am guns are a business
Not Who You Think I Am And I ask again. Wouldn't it be our fault, as a nation, if it were to even get that far? We have one of the strongest political systems in the world, (though no one trusts it because of political corruption) WE chose who WE want for President, governor, etc.
Paranoid much, you think that would happen again or something? That was in the past. Be honest to yourself. Do you own a gun, and for what reason would you? To protect your family? Recreation or sports? Look how Japan's doing without guns. The point is that with guns involved there will be death. I'm not saying to get rid of it completely, if you could restrict to the point where Japan's at, I'd be satisfied.
Lmao!!!! Crowder destroyed y'all!!!! Quit it with the propaganda!

(5:07) In my state I have to attend a safety class, give a reason for my gun purchase, give 3 references and wait 2 months for a background check in order to purchase a firearm.
these people are lying when they say there are no background checks. Mostly because these are the type of people who will never touch a gun and so they just listen to what OTHER people who will never touch a gun say about the matter. If they actually went and tried to buy one, they'd be surprised.
How many career criminals in your state jump through the same hoops before they pick up any firearm they want from a thriving black market? That's why all these requirements they make you go through are nothing more than gun safety theater.
RylanHasBucket but these shooters aren’t criminals before they commit their crime, if that makes sense. There is no way that banning guns would not decrease buying and circulation.

This was actually a very well thought out video with cited sources and data adjusted for population size. Unfortunately however, the video will likely receive a disproportionate amount of dislikes because people aren't willing to be open minded and watch the whole video. They just dislike once they see "gun violence" or "gun control".
It fails to mention that the states with the most regulated strictest gun laws have the most deaths and in fact you do need a firearm safety license to obtain a firearm in my state at least

+Gon J not true
+Shuma Gorath And said gun deaths are caused from out of state guns.
Solid video, but the fact that you left Japan off the suicide chart worries me that ur data is cherry picked :-/
+King Kasper Hi there - thanks for this note. It's always tough to decide which countries to include, so we simply used the top 10 countries on the UN's Human Development Index. hdr.undp.org/en/composite/HDI
+King Kasper Did u watch and listen to the video brah? 2:07 if u wanna hear it for urself
+King Kasper Solid comment, but the fact that you cherry picked such a non-essential "data point" to get worried about, that you are biased :-/
+King Kasper totally agree. Just visited the UN Human Development Reports and it shows that Japan is at 26.9 suicides and S.Korea is at 41.7 while the US sits at 19.4. (All data regarding deaths per 100,000 males in 2015). Looking at this data, I'm unsure on Vox's argument implying that less guns will mean less suicides, since there are so many other easy ways to take your own life in a developed country. (S.Korea & Japan have extremely strict gun control and civilians have no access to guns) I personally think it would be much more difficult to use a gun vs. overdose on over-the-counter drugs, jump, etc... But then again that's just my opinion; you would need more data and research to make any good conclusion.
Quit whining for gods sake.
Think about the video.
Does it make the problem less worse when you compare it to more Countrys?
Or do you just want to point the finger at them saying: "We have no Problem. Other Countrys are not better."

Some already have....
The MEJ 11% of the total is a lot! Bigger than I thought.
Buying guns, and related paraphernalia, is an addiction for some. That addiction runs tyrannically over the family as the next fix is sought.
Medovukha That does not bother anyone. The flood of guns in the US means a lot of trickles down to criminals and crazies.
I found it little ironic that the same people who oppose gun control in order to prevent government tyranny ,are often the same people who have no problem with police militarization ,police corruption and police brutality. Not to mention, some of these people also had voted for Bush who gave us some of the biggest government problems that we can ever manage ( NSA, Patriot Act, etc. ) . Also these people mostly have no issue with going to war most of the time, even when that war is unnecessary ( Iraq War ) .
How would gun control help with police militarization, corruption and brutality? Wouldn't the state having more control over the population's guns only give corrupt police more power?
Those same people say those tactical weapons are no deadlier than other guns, yet it their weapon of choice if they were to wage war with a 'tyrannical' government! Even if semi-auto, those are weapons of war.
+Patrick Butler
It's not really working now, is it? Unless you are suggesting that civilians start shooting cops.
Idk what your stating here. You see the people I base my principles on is Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and John Locke and neither of these people believed that government corruption was a good thing in fact they fought a war over it. I believe we should live our lives freely unless we impede on someone's life, liberty, and property which is John Lockes principles of law. No one has a say who can or cannot defend themselves because self defense is something people own themselves so if you were to take away self defense you are stealing from the people.
Mark Nay You can call anything civilian. His weapon WOULD STILL TAKE OFF YOUR LEG in what ever mode.
To dumb it down, those weapons SHOULD NOT BE DEEMED 'CIVILIAN'.
Weapon of war.
This video is my go to on almost any gun violence conversation I have online. It is both timely and timeless...
what do you propose we do abt the problem?
This video was NOT good. It didn't address the things that HAVE changed as violence increased. Look at school shootings by young shooters. It's not the guns that changed, it's things like violence in media and prescription anti-depressant drugs. I wonder if you knew that the machine gun was invented over 200 years ago. If you have a change in violence, you have to correlate it to other things that have changed. Guns haven't changed significantly in a hundred years.
@@aaaaaaaawwwwwwww What we need to do is change the toxic society that is causing more violence, NOT to make the country more of a totalitarian state. Guns didn't create this toxic society, and increasing gun control won't solve the problem. Reduce violence in media, eliminate corruption in pharma. Eliminate some of the stressers like endless wars for corrupt profits. Having said that, I do agree with better gun regulation, not more, just better. For example: increasing the age of gun ownership to 25. Kids brains haven't fully developed prior to age 25.

I don't understand why people think gun control and banning guns mean the same thing. I think things like registration and tried safety training course at the very least should be required.
It is a step down the path to it. You are delusional if you think it is not.
The only motivation in any politician's mind is "How do I stay in power and benefit the most?"
Believing that the human nature of any man is above that of Assad, Lenin, Lukashenko or even Hitler, is delusional at best. If that politician thinks they could get to and stay in control of a reasonably wealthy nation by taking the route of direct dictatorship, they would do so.
Human nature is fundementally bad. Selfish, greedy, self-centered, irrational, emotional, immature, and tribal. I have literally never heard a convincing rational (Not emotional "but we give to charity", "but the purge isn't realistic" bullshit) argument to that.
That's not what people are suggesting. It is our legal right to be allowed to own a firearm. When you start to add some regulations who's to say they can't add more? They're are saying more gun control can lead to a ban on guns.
I say mandatory gun courses every year or 2 years starting at 6 years of age. Even if you don't own a gun when you get the opportunity to do so (at 18, 21, 25 whatever age it is) you still need to do the courses. Ignorance is what makes people afraid of guns.

Such as?
@@gunhound45 -How they disproportionately compare US to specific developed UN countries' suicide rates instead of comparing US to the highest suicide rates. US isnt even top 30 in suicide rate.
-How she pivots multiple points like when she goes from Homicides to all around gun deaths to fit her narrative
-How she mentions US has the highest ownership of firearms but completely ignore the US is only 28th in homicide.
-How she ignores that homicide has gone down 30%+ from the past few decades
-Adds a clip of Obama talking about San Bernardino which had to with terrorism despite making a chart later that had terrorism go in the "Other causes of death" category
-Misrepresents the statistic of mass shootings by showing a statistic of incidents that involves shooting rather than death total. Of the random countries she has shown, proportionately US is below some of the developed UN countries she had shown. The reason why the US kill people less is because of the bad guys getting stopped with GUNS.
-Tries to convince you that gun laws are bad and tries to perpetrate the narrative of the 2nd amendments being inefficient by adding suicides. As if Guns are the reason people commit suicide. All 33 of the countries ahead of US in suicide rate have controlled gun laws and still kill themselves more.
-She goes on to ignore how a country like Australia had a gun ban and was proven that it was ineffective. Because not only were non fire arm suicides happening at a more frequent rate than gun suicides, but it spiked as soon as it was put in place and faced virtually no change to the suicide rate
-Compares the homicide rate to other countries not realizing that 4/5 of gun violence are because of drugs. Chicago despite having the highest homicide rate in the U.S. has also one of the most strictest gun laws
-Gives a stat where she compares Aids Drugs War and Terrorism to Gun Violence in the US. She fail to realize War and Terrorism also include guns. And instead of picking the most frequent causes of death like Heart Disease and Cancer she adds Aids which isnt even a huge deal in the US anyway. .003% of the US have aids and even a lower % die from it. Yet still has a higher rate than Homicide. Homicide isnt even top 10 in causes of death in the US.(And yes i understand the graphic was designed to show gun deaths in total)
-Would sometimes switch between Suicide to Homicide to all around gun deaths. The problem with this is that this also include self defense homicides and justifiable ones. Which is literally exactly why there is a 2nd amendment
-Tries to unjustify the gun homicide rate decreasing by comparing it to other countries

While I liked the video that stat about suicide was horribly misleading. America is not at the top of the suicide charts, not even close. That honor goes to South Korea. +ragmondead You must have missed the part where she stated that the countries involved were "ranked the highest in human development by the UN", so the stat was not horribly misleading at all.
Of course asian countries might have higher suicide rates, but they are also less developed than the US etc, which is pretty obvious when you think about the working conditions their population are subject to.
So, "to totally leave them off the list" is not dishonest, as this video is about the most well developed countries and their violence/suicide/gun statistics.

If you haven't noticed; murder, manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon have been a crime since the day we first saw guns.
So with your logic of restrictions, there are no murders and shootings in the first place, because they are not legal! Why restrict gun ownership, if there are no gun crimes?
Or could it be that these people who commit crimes, don't follow the law in the first place?
Because that's totally not possible!

Hello Brian !
Just so you know, Canada removed the gun registry only on "non-restricted" firearms. You can see the details at this address (www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/online_en-ligne/reg_enr-eng.htm). You still need to register your firearm if it's fall into the "restricted" category (for example semi-automatic, barrel less than 470 mm etc. ).
I can safely say that Vox did use an information that was right.
If you are interested about how many Canadians have firearms, you can check this address (www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/facts-faits/index-eng.htm). Hope you understand that not everything is black or white...

At the risk of being targeted, I'd say the gap between liberals and conservatives is shown quite astonishingly well through the Like/Dislike bar and comments.
lol, I just noticed that too, all in all its interesting.
probably a good point. Although there are liberals like me who probably disliked the video because they're informed on why legal gun control won't work, and how other factors are more prescient.
To be honest, I've agreed with points on both sides, that control won't work and that we need more control, but generally more with the general idea that we need more control, not so much with the ways people are coming up with _to_ control it. It all seems to boil down to the state of things just kinda being a mess, what with minorities being much more vocal in general lately through the internet and social media, and not necessarily only with gun control/violence. Hopefully once this wave of increased power through social media and the internet dies down enough, or people find ways to take control of it more, we can really get good, effective systems in place so that everyone can finally agree, or at least compromise effectively, on a lot more issues.
More likely that this drivel isn't linked on conservative websites as much as it is on liberal websites. This entire video is a logical fallacy nightmare. It's completely misleading and the whole thing reeks of propaganda.
I totally understand if that's the whole of it, but I personally find it hard to find places with minimum bias on such large and divided topics. While I would like to see, for example, this video with less overall bias, I've become rather disenchanted with the whole "pick a side" nature of popular politics these days and have become content with resources that are heavily liberal. I am fully aware that each person has their own preferences, but I was simply implying my distaste for for the contention that is aimed at _any_ news source online, not just Vox, anymore. I have my opinions on propaganda, as you mentioned this video "reeks of," but I have simply reached the point where I find solace in seeing that my sentiments aren't unique and otherwise stand away from the nonstop street brawl that is the vocal extremism of internet-aided politics.
Can you guys do an updated version of this video?

We need licenses to operate motor vehicles. These licenses are only available after passing two tests to verify that the licensee is familiar with relevant laws and safety procedures and can safely operate a vehicle. Any vehicle purchased must be registered and anyone driving the vehicle must have insurance. Larger and specialty vehicles require special licensing, additional insurance, and must follow stricter laws.
We do all this for machines that were not designed for the express purpose of causing bodily harm. Why is it so controversial to do the same for machines that actually are?
You need a license to carry a gun like you need a license to drive a car. You don't need a license to buy a car and you don't need a license to buy a gun...well actually you need a license to buy a gun in my state but not a car..
You know those criminals would stop those bank robberies as soon as they realize they dont have insurance on their unlicensed firearms right! I mean cause that's exactly how the world works!

guns-no licensing or registration- about 5-10 deaths per 100,000 a year.

Cars are a privilege, not a constitutional right.
Compare the statistics for what is relevant however - which is the amount of time you would be in a situation where it could harm people. Cars are used daily by basically everyone who commutes, whereas guns are almost never used - yet somehow still guns make up that many deaths.

In the netherlands you need a safe storage for your gun, the cops come check every three months if your gun is locked up safe if not, the gun would be taken away from you.
If someone breaks into your house while you're asleep, by the time you go put in the code and get ur gun out you'll be dead
Erik Arustamyan The Netherlands don't seem to permit gun ownership for self defense (except for notable circumstances I assume), so quick access isn't necessary within the parameters they allow gun ownership. As for my own opinion, it could be worth comparing how many deaths are prevents by gun ownership for self defense vs deaths enabled by less restricted gun access.
andrewia yes but according to the chart at 3:53 the burgalary rate is the highest in the Netherlands, so the chances of you needing to defend yourself at home is also high. Considering the fact that there's only 17mil people in the Netherlands compared to that of 320mil in the USA the Netherlands shouldn't even be near the top of that chart but in almost every chart they show in the video the Netherlands is there, countries like Russia, China and India aren't.
We can't just get rid of all guns. It's impossible to do that in the US literally everyone would have to volunteeraly go and give in all of their guns which won't happen, instead we need to create common sense laws. There isn't enough police in America to go around to people's houses every few months to check and see if they have safe storage, instead everything has to be done before the person buys a gun. There needs to be background checks, everyone who buys a gun should be put in a registry, there needs to be a list of medication and mental disorders and if your taking those medications or have the slightest of those disorders you don't get a gun. There also needs to be proper training. It's the same with buying a car. No license no car. You should get a license beforehand and in order to get a license you need to pass a gun safety test.

+laanyan Comments below says making an AR semi auto still classifies as a military weapon.
+laanyan Precisely, the "people control", urgh I mean "gun control" advocates are refusing to debate this topic with unbiased facts. Basically they're saying every gun is for military and/or murderous use and if it's a rifle or looks like one, or its black in color, it is s machine gun and should be banned immediately. I don't understand why they want to add to the 22,000+ gun laws that are already in place, when the FED and ATF are not enforcing one ones we after have. Example: felons cannot own guns. Send the ATF into the inner cities and collect the guns that are held by drug dealers and gang bangers. That is where the"gun problems" exist. It certainly isn't in my closet, in my safe, on my hip and in my vehicle. I don't have a problem with those guns. Nor does the FBI and ATF, they have me the permit to have them there.
An AR15, regardless of whether it is an airsoft gun or actual firearm, is not an assault rifle because it does not have a full-auto fire mode.

4:59 In the Netherlands you actually are required to storage your gun in a storage safe. This is do to a law that has been around for many years and has been heavily enforced, ever since it got put in place. You even have to get your safe checked by authority every month, (in person) to see if your storage meets the requirements. The fact that this square is not marked is concerning and leaves me wondering what your news sources are. Since the safe law is common knowledge even among the great majority of the dutch citizens. Most of wich have never touched or even seen a real gun in there life.
Rest of the video "seems" to be accurate. But all around, very interesting. It does a good job at casting a spotlight in the right areas to show sceptics in the debate that this isn't a common occurrence in other developed nations. So it is effective at conveying its message to say the least.
What other developed population has 13% of its population committing over 50% of violent crime and constitutional access to firearms without prior felonies? Also what country has 100,000 - 200,000 people coming in every month illegally? People who don't understand the reality will put their ideas on a pedestal, but this problem is caused by the culture of poverty and crime which is now openly celebrated. If you don't live in it, or your moral compass is reversed, it is very easy to pass judgement on the "people" of a country as being responsible and repugnant. Many people are forced to flee certain areas due to this problem, and the areas they go to are much safer.
This is a really bad idea because it doesn't address the reasons violence escalated so dramatically since the 1990s. It wasn't guns that changed, it was things like violence in media, increased stressers, increased corruption that negatively affects people's lives, and massive increase in prescription drugs, especially with young people.
There is no federal safe storage loss some states have them but they're so vague that they're basically unenforced
Sean: California (and other states) require a gun lock on the gun to prevent it from being fired.
There are cases where a child found a gun that was not lock and accidentally injured or killed someone... the owner of the gun that was not stored safely ...was liable. They can claim it was on the top shelf at the back of the closet ...doesn't matter... a kid found it and fired it.
