- Guns weren’t always the contentious issue they are today in the US. Forty years ago, guns were primarily used for sport and recreation, and mass shootings were a rarity. Much has changed since then, and while there’s a lot of debate around how to put an end to gun violence, there has yet to be a solution that everyone can agree on. Gun safety advocate David Farrell thinks he has the answer, and takes us through America’s history to get there.

The 2nd Amendment was never about hunting. It was intended to keep the power of government in the hands of the people. I liked the 60 cal machine gun too. It must be more powerful than the 50 cal...

Just the opposite. Unconsciously started buying guns to save people. To buy a weapon for self defense, the line that was crossed is "I've already decided to save a human life." People who buy a weapon are not doing so with the hopes of killing someone. It's with the hope of deterring violence, saving one's own life, or the life of their loved one.

Yes, making the decision to take a human life is the whole point. If someone threatens my/my family's life I will take that person's life before they take mine.
I wouldn't call it fear. It's a respect of danger. But why do we fear? Because the is a true and relevant threat of evil in the world. The only thing I fear is malfunction or bad ammo.
Why isnt that fear? Having a respect for danger is just a fancy way of putting im afriad. As a student in a school, who also knows someone who was in a school shooting, I fear that one day my class will just be another statistic. Im afraid that when i go to a concert i wont make it out alive. I am a highschooler and the first thing i do when i walk my classes is look for places to hide if i am put in a situation where there is a shooter. That is a true relevant threat.

One piece of information that I think you forgot was the number of serial killers that started to terrorize the United States in the 70s and 80s. There were serial killers before this time, but they became much more publicized during this timeframe as well. We need a much better way of dealing with mental illness instead of making the police and courts responsible for handling it.
A fearful citizen concealed carry for safety has 0 to do with mass shootings. The uprise in media and the first school shooting to be so publicized at the time. Correlation doesn’t equal causation

Maybe he is referring to an M60 machine gun, but that is .30 caliber, not .60 caliber.
The NRA does teach responsibly using and storing your gun.
But their choice of advertisement that promotes ownership for fear of being helpless or without guns isn’t made any less destructive by that fact. The NRA is pulled between two issues that are incompatible. And the money trail smells of how fear sells.
Fact: You sign up for the NRA you get tons of paperwork telling you of what the house and senate are doing regarding your gun right (mainly trying to take them from you) and asking for more money.(aka. Donations)
There are two words in “gun violence”. Since almost all of the school shootings were conducted by those who are or recently were students at the school, maybe they should work on students. When I was in HS you could see rifles from inside the school in racks is the back window of trucks. Nobody shot up that school. Their problem doesn’t look like guns it looks like violence-conducted by students!
He makes it clear within the first 20 seconds of his speech that it's not about the guns or the amount of guns that we have but the relationship with a gun whether he's right or not I don't know but at least understand the speech before you make a comment

And in japan suicide is the leading cause of death in ages 20-44 and the number of missing people is very high compared to other countries. They also had 0 mass shootings before guns were invented, instead the government slaughters its own people with spears, swords, ball and chains, and other barbaric and brutal weapons. 2/3rs of the gun deaths number is suicide, over half of homocides are gang related and the rest are shot by people they know. Nearly 99% of these deaths the type of weapon and capacity is irrelevent and to fix it these by passing magazine bans and rifle bans? laws that would criminalize law abiding citezins on a scale we havent ever seen before ever. enforcing these laws would cause more deaths than we have now, and for what to make it slightly harder for someone to get ahold of a piece of plastic and a spring? you dont need any sophisticated technology for murder. how is that a good comprimise, we know its not going to do anyting to prevent any of the 1% of left that these two factors might matter. because we dont even have a gun problem, we only have a gun problem if you assume that we have car accident death problem. most people in the united states dont know anyone who has been murdered with a gun or murdered at all. 2/3s of the 35k gun deaths is suicides and the rest of the homocides are in a few small areas with the same socioeconmic issues. They keep advocating for laws we already have, and say they are pro 2a and also gun owners to draw attention away from the fact that anyone who knows about guns and how the laws work think these proposals are wrong ethically and unconstitutional

In 75 every car or truck had a gun or two in most vehicles, wasn't a big deal to carry a gun down the hall to work on it in industrial arts,teacher wanted to lock it up in his office so it wouldn't get stolen.

You are wrong about Zimmerman - he didn't use that gun until Travon had attacked and *injured* him. Travon was on top of Zimmerman pounding his head against the concrete sidewalk when Zimmerman pulled his gun and shot Travon in the chest. Zimmerman did follow him, because Travon was looking in people's windows and Zimmerman didn't know him. He thought Travon was casing homes for burglary and he had already called the cops. He was keeping track of Travon until the cops got there, which is what a Neighborhood Watch does.
Forty years ago, Zimmerman would be congratulated by the cops and he would not be prosecuted, because he was defending both himself and his neighborhood. That would be true even in liberal California...I know, I was there back then and I've seen this type of issue. I've literally had sheriffs tell me to call them to haul away the body if someone trespassed.
In Zimmerman's case - the 911 tape was released and *edited* (which was proven) by the media to whip up rage and the Obama administration proclaimed Zimmerman guilty long before the facts were determined, which is why the media was so shocked when Zimmerman wasn't prosecuted at first - the facts supported self defense. Even when prosecuted, he successfully defended himself and was acquitted.
While the media (and you Mr. Farrell) blame Zimmerman for everything - do remember that if Travon had simply walked home and ignored Zimmerman, nothing would have happened. Travon *chose* to attack Zimmerman, initiating the fight. Zimmerman might be an a**hole, but he did not speak to or attack Travon. Travon attacked him in the public commons of the development, from what I've been able to piece together at the behest of his girlfriend egging him on by cell phone. Why she wasn't charged as a co-conspirator or was sued by Zimmerman for contributing to his injuries I don't know. Zimmerman did not initiate the fight. Yes, he was following a suspicious person who appeared to be casing home - I would be watching him also.
More and more we cannot depend on the authorities. We used to have peace officers, now we have law enforcement officers, a very different mindset. Officers used to be lauded for keeping the peace, now they have quotas on the number of tickets or arrests per shift. They go looking for any reason to arrest someone - their stats (and bonuses) depend on hitting and exceeding those quotas. Cops will tell you there isn't an official quotas...but there are "expected" number of tickets and arrests. Go below that "expected" level and you will get counseling and bad marks in your file. And you'll get suggestions that being an *law enforcement officer* "may not be in your best interest." And they are swamped by the volume of calls, so when you are told "call the cops and wait for them" - it isn't realistic. Whatever is going to happen will be done long before the cops get there. That has always been the case. Everyone had guns back then (sporting weapons mostly, like shotguns) and if needed they used them. Then came prosecutions for defending yourself, and the gun grabbers starting calling everything an "assault weapon" and people like me starting seeing a pattern that occurred in Germany, Russia, China, Cambodia, and other countries where the first thing the governments did was disarm their citizens. That way leads to mass murder...by the government. Don't think so? Look at Waco, Ruby Ridge, and others. Which led to the punch back in Oklahoma City. Since then the government has been much more cautious about pissing off American citizens. I hate the loss of life...but it woke up everybody and the government backed off for the most part.
Forty years ago we had *much* less government, and people were expected to handle their own security and situation. There were also a lot fewer people, as well as a lot fewer illegals. The drug war started this path of creating victimless crimes with hard penalties, and that has pervaded our government, police, and courts with the mindset that all citizens are guilty of something - they just have to find it. Mr. Farrell, if you want to make the change to a less fearful America - look at the government which is putting it's fear tentacles into everything, as well as bankrupting our country. Fear of being forced into homelessness, the many criminals that now prey on anyone, let along their own communities has forced this situation into existence.

The speaker also made a big deal about the "Stand your ground" Law in the Zimmerman trial. That law was never invoked in the Zimmerman trial.
The speaker either had not done proper research or was just lying to try and make a point.

Hey Mr. .60 cal machinegun man, when you buy a gun for self-defense the only "line" you cross is that you are taking responsibility for your own safety. The police won't do it as there are numerous court rulings including from the U.S. Supreme Court stating that the police have no duty to protect individuals. Your simplistic "solution" to "gun violence" by taking away fear is simply asinine. 70% of the murders in the U.S. occur in only 5% of it's counties and it sure as hell isn't "fear" from peacable gun owners that is driving all of that.
I am 70 years old and have studied and been around guns almost my entire life. I have NEVER heard of a .60 caliber machine gun. Hmmmm, it must be a custom built rare model. I think he is mistaken and he meant to say a .50 caliber machine gun. Those are in common use in the military. I challenge his ignorance !! Pleeease, educate me !!

for instance in my post above breaking down one of the charts he showed from 1961 to 2017 there was an approximate 2.02% increase in "mass shooting" deaths. where as there was a massive many thousands increase in gun ownership in that time period (ie somewhere between 350 and 600 million firearms owned in the usa today). were more guns = more deaths premise true there should have been a correspondingly vast increase of deaths. there simply hasnt been. there definitely has been an increase, but since so many resources are wasted in anti gun lobby studies trying to pin the blame on guns, its unclear why. but as i said, were the problem directly correlated to guns, the numbers of deaths wouldve vastly increased. also firearms were less highly regulated in the past (there are something like 22,000 gun control laws state and federally across the usa). were access truly the problem, the numbers would be going down with more and more gun control laws. they arent. clearly gun control isnt working.
conversely no credible study has ever shown that with a gun ban overall death rates have gone down. simply the number of deaths caused by firearms. in other words a ban simply forces criminals disposed to doing harm to switch to another implement. or as in australia, canada, isreal, mexico, and the uk criminals simply set own illicit firearms factories and manufacture their own fully automatic firearms.

He is right with the fact, that propagating fear is very harmful for society.
He claims we should associate guns with sports, like toys not defence devices. That we should have a lightly view on them.
Apart from my personal conviction, that something as harmful as firearms shouldn‘t be accustomed as completely acceptable sports tools in broad society, I don‘t think his suggested shift of thinking is a solution.
Guns don‘t get less deadly by marketing.
There is no reason why crimes should decrease by that.
It normalizes and even glorifies guns more.

That is Democrats strategy.
That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. So don't buy a gun and don't go the range and shoot them or go hunting. But don't take that right away from others. Shooting guns, like driving cars fast, is fun. With the added benefit of teaching you how to properly handle a weapon in the rare case you may need it to defend your or someone else's life.
You also had more of the mental ill placed into instiutions 40 years ago and not let out on the street. Also if you seems a threat, they didn't let you run to a lawyer but were locked right up!
What also happened in the 1970s was a move to ban handguns, which is probably why the NRA shifted. There is a huge difference between regulating and banning a product. The gun debate changed from regulation to banning a certain gun with the goal to eventually ban all guns. Gun ownership for self defense was just not questioned prior to the 1970s. As far as the leap to take a human life for self defense, that is just a natural human instinct, no one wants to do that, it is just if I have a choice of kill or be killed I chose kill, and I didn’t make that decision the attacker did.
I've watched this 3 times and still can't fathom how wrong the speaker is on so many things. It almost rises to satire.

I made it to about 7:07 minutes in and had to turn him off. Stand Your Ground is not about fear or a license to kill, it protects gun owners from radicalized District Attorneys and corrupt Judges.
When John Hancock signed the Declaration of Independence, he also crossed those two points you mentioned. And he wasn’t fearful.

As someone who qualified expert on the M60 machine gun and a 50 caliber machine gun I'm not personally aware of a 60 caliber machine gun in the military Arsenal. Lyrics to makes the argument about Americans owning Firearms just because of fear oh, and again I say BS. Americans have owned firearms for protection since the beginning of our country. I would agree a spike in crime does encourage a spike in gun ownership but how does the severe drop in crime over the past 3 decades and the massive increase in gun ownership correlate with that belief oh, simple it doesn't. A huge percentage of gun ownership is multifaceted especially those many of us who own more than one gun. The people in this category yes own guns for sporting purposes, yes own firearms for self-defense, but it's a huge percentage of them also or even primarily on guns for the purposes of Defending Liberty against all enemies foreign and domestic. So, even if you take all the fear oh crime issues out of gun ownership oh, you would still have a nation with the highest gun ownership in the world. Changes nothing. The one group that tends to use a gun and in the process wounds or kills many people out of fear, coincidentally tends to be the one group that assholes like this guy speaking would also give the only access to guns oh, yes the police. Police tend to discharge their weapons out of fear more than any other group. License concealed carry holders such as the guy you mentioned in the video rarely discharged out of fear and an error.
As to the politics of gun control and the fear that that inspires, I would argue it's less about fear and more about trust in the past the fairy pro-second Amendment folks have tried to be reasonable and accommodating and given up certain elements of their rights to accommodate the people on the other side of the issue. Unfortunately there's never any compromise the other way, and as a result Second Amendment advocates do not trust the other side. More than 40,000 gun laws on the books hey Tammy as a second amendment advocate that gun control is all about taking more and more and more of my right away. And as most Second Amendment advocates realize but can't seem to get the other side to understand, the vast majority of these laws do no good whatsoever. How does taking the gun away from a law abiding citizen prevent a criminal from pursuing criminal activities? Simple it does not! As long as one side is dead set on eroding or eliminating rights of people on the other side of the argument that distrust or as he says fear will continue.
Good talk overall, but he twisted the Trayvon Martin incident, which was not simply someone shooting someone because they felt a bit scared. It's a sad incident but was twisted a bit to fit this talk's narrative of fear.

He pick up some facts and used them out of context. For example the supreme court decision on 2nd amendment and the increase in criminal and violent activity in the 70's. The people wouldn't be "in fear" is the government had provided a good protection against that criminals wave. To add salt to the injury, the same supreme court said that the police work is not top protect the individuals, it is our responsibility. So if it is my responsibility, what he expect us to do?

This means nothing. Fear isn't a negative response to a survival situation. Its vital. it increases your adrenaline, decreases blood pressure, and heightens response time. To protect yourself out of fear of being killed is common sense. And is in no way the route to the steady rise in mass shootings.
Criminals cross the line everyday. I’d prefer the innocent survive the encounter instead.
It would be a massive upheaval to change societal stability i.e. mental health, well being, happiness etc, to fit in with gun control. Wouldn't it be easier the other way around.

This guy is either ignorant of self protection law or a liar. One does not have the 'right' to shoot some one just because they felt afraid. Florida statute 776.013 'Deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that using or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony.' When some one has you pinned on the sidewalk and is banging your head against the concrete, one can reasonably believe their life is in imminent danger or death or great bodily harm. Zimmerman made some very bad decisions prior to the final incident yes, but was he just 'afraid' or did he have a good reason to believe his live was in great danger? The jury said yes.
Martin was trying to wrest the gun from Zimmerman. Thus, he was armed. In the ensuing struggle, one or the other was going to get shot.
As far as stand your ground laws, the intent is not so that you can follow them and start an altercation and kill somebody. Stand your ground is so you can defend yourself from an attack, in the George Zimmerman situation I feel stand your ground was interpreted incorrectly.
A very poorly researched talk.
Nowhere in the Zimmerman trial was the "Stand your ground" Law invoked.
Zimmerman observed a man looking into people's in a restricted no trespassing area and went to investigate.
Zimmerman was then attacked, Zimmerman was not attacking Martin. It was the other way around.
Zimmerman was found innocent of murder on a self defense plea.
Trying to be armed so as to not be robbed, murdered or raped, isn't an act of fear.
It is an act of common sense. Do you make sure your brakes on your car are working because you fear getting into an accident?
Or do you make sure your brakes are working as an act basic intelligence and being responsible?
No matter where you live, it is being responsible to take actions to try and not be the victim of a crime.

As soon as he said that during the first 200 years of our history the primary reason people owned guns was for hunting a sport I knew this talk was going to be off target. The Militia Act of 1792 dedicated that every able bodied man from 18 - 45 had to own a firearm. The primary reasons were to protect against foreign invasion, protect against a totalitarical central government, protect against attackes by criminals, animals and hostile Indian tribes. This didn't limit ownership to just the militia (it's the right of The People to keep and bear arms) but the idea that hunting and sport were the primary reasons is nonsense. Today some of these threats are not as prevalent but as far as the exercise of our 2nd Amendment rights are concerned that is immaterial. The problem that needs to be addressed isn't a gun problem but a mental health problem. High school kids use to bring guns to school while participating in shooting clubs. Why weren't these kids shooting up schools in the 1950's?

Fun fact: just because someone went to the military , especially in the marines and army branches, does not make them at all a firearms expert. Some of the dumbest fudd-lore was developed by deployed and national guard guys that ate up anything their OC said to them. A lot of these guys first experience with anything outside of a 22 or shotgun was in the military at 18 year old.
Case in point, a Vietnam marine I know thinks the 1911 and the m14 is the best weapon combo because he carried that and was told that and didn’t shoot anything but that. Everyone that is atleast a novice in fire arms knowledge knows those guns are archaic trash in comparison to other guns that were available at the time (let alone what’s available nowadays).
Also just because a person went to the military , it doesn’t make them an expert on gun violence and reading /gathering/and orating legitimate statistics.

The facts are that society has changed attitudes in many directions. Police can not intercede on a victim's behalf quickly enough to stop violent crimes, they can mostly secure a crime scene for detectives to figure out how you got dead. Mistrust of authority in general and surely that of cross town rivals makes a certain cohort involved in gun violence regularly pack as a safety measure or to blast a cap to announce their own authori-TY. Life is cheap in Chicago as the turf war continues from the days of Capone until now. How does anybody think gun laws will protect cops who got disarmed? Morality will only see the innocent die. If everybody has the authority to end violence, let's try giving them the responsibility of standing for victims first.
the way to cure the problem is for people to grow up and not be so touchy and sensitive in my opinion carrying a gun is a big responsibility it's to preserve life is the only reason for use I carry every day because people and this world are crazy I just want to have a fighting chance against some looney toon

We need to either ban assault rifles or put a 6 month waiting period on them. Somebody shouldn’t be able to go into a gun store and buy any gun instantly. We need to ban private sales as well, if people need to sell their firearms then they can go to a gun store and do it. That’s my first step.

Or a criminal who doesn't give a crap about words on a piece of paper, he likely isn't going to a gun store anyway. Laws exist to keep honest people from getting access to a legal product. I am not against them all but making more isn't going to stop the criminals or the people intent on doing harm to innocents. It's just not.

The reason to ban private sales is, when I sell a gun on the streets it’s not my job to background check whom I’m selling it to, only to make sure they aren’t a minor. You can’t stop all evil you never will, you can’t make people lock their guns up so you can’t stop a kid from taking them. You can use the measures I stated as more insulation to keep guns out of the wrong hands and just to show people we’re trying.
Finally someone realized that we never had mass shootings till we had all these new gun laws 40 years ago. We need to take down all the signs saying it's safe to kill people here No one will shoot back.
