+Raden Bangga No drummer ever intentionally drops his sticks. Im not taking anything away from him i love him but just because he is as good as he is doesnt mean he doesnt fuck up. Hes still a human. Gene hoglan fucks up. John bonham fucked up a lot. Doesnt mean they suck but you cant expect perfection 24/7 365. Everyone has off days. I think they ran out of time and this was the best take they could get in the time he had.
+Raden Bangga wtf do u mean by he played it better than Luke Holland? First of all, Garstka wrote this song with AAL, and second, Luke's cover was amazing. What does that stupid comparison have to do with anything?
The truly great thing about this guy is that you can tell by watching him that not only does he have an excellence about him but he absolutely loves what he does....
Accuracy AND precision. Very rare combo. Edit: If he was a laboratory equipment and the snare is the test result, we would be six sigma and wouldn't worry about QC.
Seriously if you thumb down a Matt Garstka drumming video its one of two reasons. You have no idea what you're witnessing and hearing or you quit drums due to watching this.
The high quality of his playing knocked me out of my chair. When I came to I guess I was holding my phone upside down because I meant to hit the thumb up but I hit the other.
Adah BombDon those Meinl cymbals are made, to withstand those kind of hits. Matt wasn’t just randomly laying down hard hits on them. That’s a heavier part of the song and he was FEELING that. If you’ve ever even played the drums, you would know that it happens all the time.
Its amazing how much better he has gotten in the last 6 years alone. He's now putting out these tunes with finesse and improv like it is nothing on stage.
What gets me is the tiny wear mark area on the snare. He's hitting that in the same place exactly every time. Marks on my snare are all over the place! Great precision.
Even with a missed stick this man still holds it together like a boss. One of the finest contemporary percussionist today. A true powerhouse, it's amazing seeing him performing with Animals as Leaders, the way he hold everything together through such complex arrangements is truly amazing.
Man if I had those Meinl Byzance, which is arguably one of the best cymbal lineup out there, I'll be even scared to hit them hard. While Matt here is just beating them like they owe him money
Firstly, even when Matt drops a stick, the fuckin thing *hits the cymbal on the right accent.* Secondly, the riff/beat right after he drops the stick is one of my favorite Gartska beats of all time. It’s so... tasteful and chunky. Once it hits you realize the whole song has kinda been building up to that... then when it’s over there is an even greater (but less mind blowing) further climax. This is definitely one of Animals As Leaders best tunes.
Finally a drummer who excites me as much as Portnoy. WOW! Eindelijk een drummer die me net zo opwindt als Portnoy. Finalmente un batterista che mi emoziona tanto quanto Portnoy.
I love his intensity and the way he basically speaks to his drums. Someone said he is not doing his cymbal hits properly. Well you are not Matt Gartska. He is very precise.
Dude, you are the best drummer that I watch in UA-cam. When you drop the stick you proved that you are human like me hahaha. Very good job you did, best drummer ever. I hope that I can play like you some day in the future.
I've been a fan of animals as leaders since their first album, and I must say I was a little disappointed when Navene left the band, but then the groove at 1:20 made me question my existence when I first heard it.... favorite part of any AAL song.
The stick flying out of his hand at 1:10 hits perfectly in time. He truly is a god..
Agree with you..what a pro..
Man, I actually didn't notice it till you mentioned ! Haha thats awesome..
The stick hits at the right time, but just to be clear, he hits the cymbal to actually make the noise.
Actually, now that I watch it in slow motion, the stick hits the wrong cymbal. He is still a god though, no arguments about that
Actually, it just proves he's human like the rest of us LOL. Awesome player.
Even when he dropped the sticks and fell on the cymbal, was on time.
:D
IKR? That was the "holy shit" moment of the day for me. :D
That was perfect lmfao
Haha love it
Dan Thompson ICM that's crazy😂
1:10 *Drops stick on cymbal perfectly on time*
"Task failed successfully"
haha :) even the stcik flies another bizarre groove comes out
he hits it with his other hand lol
Ahahahahagagagagagagag
everyone drops a stick here and there it's happens
@@billmint8122 I didn't see it, timestamp it
I think you're kidding, no hand hit a cymbal before he got his replacement drumstick
3:03 What a liquid fucking fill, theres so much soul.
Matt drops the stick and still plays better than me with one hand
im really sure that he drops it for this video. and btw, he plays much better than luke holland
+Raden Bangga No drummer ever intentionally drops his sticks. Im not taking anything away from him i love him but just because he is as good as he is doesnt mean he doesnt fuck up. Hes still a human. +Raden Bangga wtf do u mean by he played it better than Luke Holland? First of all, Garstka wrote this song with AAL, and second, Luke's cover was amazing. What does that stupid comparison have to do with anything?
***** Right! That for all we know could have been the only one take.
+Tommy Dalo adam gray throws his sticks all the time
The truly great thing about this guy is that you can tell by watching him that not only does he have an excellence about him but he absolutely loves what he does....
Look at the wear mark on his snare head...that's some insane accuracy!
Dylan Marsh II was hoping some one would recognize that
Accuracy AND precision. Very rare combo.
Edit: If he was a laboratory equipment and the snare is the test result, we would be six sigma and wouldn't worry about QC.
The rest of the skin is blissfully unaware- All that spot knows is pain!
There are metronomes... and then there are mattronomes
Reid Copping best comment on any of his videos
Reid Copping So good haha
Mattro-gnomes
pun god
Nice one!
Seriously if you thumb down a Matt Garstka drumming video its one of two reasons. You have no idea what you're witnessing and hearing or you quit drums due to watching this.
I’ve done both... but I thumb up yeeee boi
The high quality of his playing knocked me out of my chair. When I came to I guess I was holding my phone upside down because I meant to hit the thumb up but I hit the other.
Maybe some just hate when cymbals are smashed over and over, dude needs to calm the fuck down
Adah BombDon those Meinl cymbals are made, to withstand those kind of hits. Matt wasn’t just randomly laying down hard hits on them. That’s a heavier part of the song and he was FEELING that. If you’ve ever even played the drums, you would know that it happens all the time.
dave hutchings Funny
I can play the section from 1:16 to 1:20
CoRe - Flying Dutchman That part is no trivial on guitar either
No no mate you can't play it, everything's already perfectly calculated, even that section 😂
😂😂😂
CoRe - Flying Dutchman i’m supposed to like this comment right?
Hahaa
To be able to drop a stick and then go into that ridiculous ass section on the kick drum and play it flawlessly is truly impressive.
2:02 is my favorite part of the song and I'm glad he looked like he was enjoying himself especially with that fill
Seems to me he went hard because thats his favorite part of that song
when you purposely drop a stick to better mask the fact that you are a robot.
Adrian Ramirez 😂
Hahahahaha
lol
@Hey Zeus this is a self own if I've ever seen one
It wasn't good enough though, that drop was in perfect time...
Its amazing how much better he has gotten in the last 6 years alone. He's now putting out these tunes with finesse and improv like it is nothing on stage.
He's so good! its amazing
1:20-1:48 That kick line is just so tasteful... Dang dude.
Once machines come to power on this planet they will recognize Matt as their leader.
MrCorvusC don't you mean the animals coming to power as our leaders? *wink*
MrCorvusC Machine as leaders
Both responses got it wrong. Initial post was perfect.
the animal as leader
🤣 it is insane. beefy as fuck. this is something nasty.
The speed precision and power that Matt displays is truly amazing.
Unbelievable. For me, this song has the most tasteful drumming from Matt. So many beautiful fills, so fluid. WOW❤
you should listen to Ectogenesis
Met him yesterday. It was definitely a religious experience
So your meeting is a lie?
lol
apply cold water to the burned area
*tips fedora*
Dom where?😳
The section that begins at 1:14 is glorious.
AlanKey86 I have spent years practicing those 16 bars, still nowhere close :(
I think that's called breakdown :D
Creamy and dreamy.
2:03 when you remember that you're endorsed by meinl cymbals
I don't get it
He hits them like he didn't have to pay for them or just doesn't give a fuck. It's great.
Two years on Nick, but I wanted to tell you that I laughed a lot at this.
Nick Witt haha three years on, that is still hilarious!
Man if I had those Meinl Byzance, which is arguably one of the best cymbal lineup out there, I'll be even scared to hit them hard. While Matt here is just beating them like they owe him money
animals leaders has a special place in my heart. and I love you guys are starting to give us just the performances now. keep it up, its great
that stick drop was calculated... "I'm not an alien!"
Not buying it.
And the dropped stick still hits the cymbal in time. What a fucking pro.
Only Matt Garstka has the rep great enough for an entire chat room to talk about how amazing him dropping his sticks are
The drum/bass solo is truly unbelievable every time I listen to it. Insane, man. Insane.
It makes me giggle nervously...it's THAT good!
That’s flippin tiny wear spot on the snare. So precise.
Matt is an absolute beast! The whole Joy Of Motion album is amazing, I'd highly recommend it.
Just discovered this drummer, wow Matt. Explosive energy and technical.
makes it look so easy- such a fluid drummer right there with tomas haake, marco minnemann, danny carey, and mario duplantier..so many great ones
I get goosebumps every time I watch this.
… still.
he is the perfect blend of technicality and groove
THAT FILL AT 2:15... LAWD JEEEEEEEEZ
Five years playing passed and i'm still impressed
Can’t stop listening.. this is EPIC!
I want to see Matt play a song like Back in Black, just to see what he does to it
ThunderHawk606 or 7 nation army
ThunderHawk606 Guess y'all haven't seen him cover 'Get yo freak on' yet.
ThunderHawk606 he would play exactly like they were written
7 Nation army in 7/8 or in 17/4
The song name would change to front out white
I could watch this guy play 12 hours a day. Animals as Leaders is really something else.
Matt is so good, even when he fails he manages to throw the stick on the cymbal in the right tempo
That is why he’s by far the best drummer on the planet! 🤘🏽🙌🏽
I... I... I didn't realize he kept up with the slap-guitar part with his feet. What a monster!
He complements Tosin's thumping incredibly well with that double kick. It's so perfect!
This is madness!!
THIS. IS. GARSTKA!!!
hahaha good one
Mattness? Or was that the joke all along
Yaass
mattness
THIS IS SPARTKA!
man even that mini intro fill that was like 3 notes blew me away already.
Haha my "Up Next"- video is "How to Hold Your Drumsticks" fitting... this is awesome!
Such a nice performance, and with that symbals setup, just hits better
Matt Garstka, big influencer drummer i ve ever seen.. sincere and soulfull playing. thanks for inspiration man ! keep up great work !
Such dry cymbals, such wet pants...
best comment ever on youtube
hahahaha
He's probably dehydrated all the time :(
OfficerMarmalade nice pfp
hahaha!
The section between 1:20-1:50 is the cleanest bass ive ever seen!!!!
Maybe one of the most complete prog drummers right now.
2:17 absolutely beautiful
I love hearing clean, fast kick drum with no triggers
My favorite drummer by far...
What’s great is that you can tell this is a challenge for him to play. The look on his face is a look of difficulty and joy
The tone of his drums is just intense. His drumming is even more intense. Damn!
This dude’s a beast.
This guy is incredible.
Very nice and sophisticated! What a drummer Matt is he even drops the stick and manages to do it perfectly lol.. impressive!!!!
I love Matt Garstka style. Intricate drumming indeed!
Absolutely stunning....and thanks to Drumeo every time for these gifts!!!
insane performance
Garstka is king of the Multi-taskers. Amazing!
those cymbals sound out of this world
He's the most underrated drummer in metal
Firstly, even when Matt drops a stick, the fuckin thing *hits the cymbal on the right accent.*
Secondly, the riff/beat right after he drops the stick is one of my favorite Gartska beats of all time. It’s so... tasteful and chunky. Once it hits you realize the whole song has kinda been building up to that... then when it’s over there is an even greater (but less mind blowing) further climax.
This is definitely one of Animals As Leaders best tunes.
Love the fact that they decided to keep this take anyway
Probably my favourite drummer around today
Yesterday i showed this play to my friend, he cried... powerful indeed.
Faz 2 meses que essa música roda sozinha no automático na minha cabeça nas horas vagas...muito show!
i've never felt so happy to see someone like matt to make a mistake
Absolutely beautiful to watch you play, Matt!
i certainly say that about you. love that neil young cover...the harmony puts it over the top. i look forward to more on your channel.
Awe!! Thanks, Kodiak wild!
Finally a drummer who excites me as much as Portnoy. WOW!
Eindelijk een drummer die me net zo opwindt als Portnoy.
Finalmente un batterista che mi emoziona tanto quanto Portnoy.
1:20 I have no way of saying it not weird - the way he tickles the bass drum in that section is most pleasing.
Wow! This is so awesome! It’s great to see Matt play. I dream to play like him someday
I swear, this was such a tasteful choice of song to film this is like my favorite Gartska playthrough!
Love the stick drop and recovery. Beautiful drumming and tune, AAL!
God, Matt is fucking insane. My favorite contemporary drummer by a country mile.
It's almost as if he went ham on the double bass pedals to make up for losing his stick
Danielle Hunt lol
100% took his rage to the stage
I love his intensity and the way he basically speaks to his drums. Someone said he is not doing his cymbal hits properly. Well you are not Matt Gartska. He is very precise.
After one day of full practice, I can play the half of the song, LOVE SO MUCH THIS FKIN DRUMS
This dude is incredible! AAL for life! 👍😎
Great timing by the crew. 👏 👏
Damn he Stomps on them kicks with powerful intent 🤙
Thank you Matt for so much! You are inspirational
Great Job Matt!!!
Playing Yamaha and Zildjian, this makes me wanna switch to Tama and Meinl. Love Matts playing, a true game changer
I love how he breezes through his stick flying out of his hand, then at 3:03 he makes the, face of, "Alright, I'm not messing around anymore!"
Shit got serious after that lol
Lol the previous video of Drumeo was "How to hold your drumsticks" XD
+Νίκος Κούστας LMAO
I bet he dropped the stick on purpose to show how much of a legend he is
Why is he so good?.?. 🖤☮🖤
After dropping the drumstick, you can tell Matt smacked those drums for making him do that
Great drummer ! Awesome creativity !
Dude, you are the best drummer that I watch in UA-cam. When you drop the stick you proved that you are human like me hahaha. Very good job you did, best drummer ever. I hope that I can play like you some day in the future.

You can tell after he dropped his stick it was eating him up inside the whole time afterwards. lol
He recovered really damn well though. I would have just curled up into a ball and wept, he still hit that fill like a boss.
@@eatingtrees9077 yes i need someone to call uber for me as i curl up backstage xD
No retakes for this guy, ever!
Basically from 1:21 and on, I go from six to midnight and pass out from lack of blood and oxygen to my brain.
the pop that snare has is insane
Drops stick, makes it a musical masterpiece
I love it when Matt uses cymbals he WANTS to use, not which ones Meinl wants him to use
I know it doesn't matter that much but fk me those cymbals are absolutely GORGEOUS
I have a top 10 of my favourite drummers and he is on the top of my first one. He`s amazing.
