  • In this lesson, we had the honour to host Matt Garstka from Animals As Leaders. Matt discussed how he likes to use systems and methods to make his practice sessions more efficient.
Since graduating from Berklee in 2011, Matt Garstka has joined the band Animals as Leaders and taken the drum world by storm - being nominated for DRUM! Magazine's Progressive Rock Drummer and Rising Star awards, listed as one of the 10 best prog drummers by Rhythm Magazine, and featured on the cover of Modern Drummer.

my dad, who played jazz drums starting in the end of the 40's is 82 this year (2018.) and even through his dementia, everytime i play an animals as leaders album, he always comments on how good this drummer is. this band is going to be considered "classical," music after their time has passed.

I know you posted this about 5 years ago but, if you are willing to share, I’d be curious on what kind of dementia? I ask this because my dad was diagnosed with FTD a few years ago and he played a huge role in my “heavier” music tastes and I hope to be able to have a similar experience down the road.

I have noticed a lot of comments where people aren't quite understanding what he is saying. I'm not a know it all and I'm not listing out the bullet points that I got from this lesson to be a jerk, but sometimes when I end up taking notes during these video lessons, and simplify what they say, it becomes more obvious.
    1. Stop playing when a "pothole" or mistake arises. So when you feel yourself make a mistake, don't keep playing. Address the issue until it becomes natural and clean.
    2. Slow it down. Speed isn't everything. If you can nail it slow (which is more difficult than fast) then speeding it back back up after learning it slow will help it to make more sense.
    3. Repetition. Play a groove for a couple of measures, and then slowly add to it. Play each addition to the original groove another couple of measures before adding the next.
    4. Read music. Muscle memory will only take you so far. By being able to see each note and time signature on paper will help to dissect the exact layout of the groove and see where you may be missing something.
    5. Plan practices. Go into each day already knowing what you will be working on when you get the chance to sit down at the kit. Being scatter brained and going on a whim won't help you to progress in distinct areas.
Thank Matt Garstka for the awesome lesson! I'm subscribing to your site!

youreonlyhuman I took notes to this lesson too! It was the first Drumeo lesson that I was able to catch live and all the way through, so it's the first time I took notes. This is probably the best lesson to take notes to because it was all talking. I sat at my kit, but didn't touch it at all!

Playing doesn't give you shit in short video lessons like this, it only serves to pump muscles and entertain you, moving away from the important aspect of it "educating you". Better to hear concepts and letting you know whats going on in these monsters heads. wayyy more beneficial to you.

I know there's a lot of people on here that are saying that they're not happy that he did a lot of digressing and "rambling"...I thought this too when I first saw this video. However, I think we need to realize how great of a musician Matt really is, and with that doesn't just come with a bunch of licks and "quicktips" to rip off of note for note with none of your own creativity... As shown in Matt's speech; it comes with DEEP thought, ideology, and philosophy! I think because of the convenience of UA-cam, some of us (myself included) can get easily distracted from that. For Instance..he pokes a bit of light fun at that sort of thing @23:20 lmao! This is a life long journey my friends! Hang on to every piece of Musical knowledge you come across! Because whether it's licks or just talking about music and drums, every little thing helps!

    • @Coastfog
      @Coastfog Рік тому

You're spot on, I want to devour music, drums specifically. Every technique, every quick tip or hack, every "Oh, well I actually do it *this* way", every "do you know xyz?", every jam session with new people, every time you play way out of your comfort zone, skillwise or stilistically... It's a mindset and indeed a life long journey.

I love the way he uses linear drumming, limb independence, ghost notes and lots of other crazy techniques that he implements into his music. The drummers that have just that one little dot (of the coating missing) on their snare actually really impress me. The fact that they hit basically the same exact spot all the time shows how well they know their kit.

I was kinda upset when I heard that Navene is out of AAL and Matt is gonna fill his place. Saw him live and still was not sure if he was the right choice for this (despite guys like troy wright), but this video just blew every thoughts away. All hail Garstka, jesus christ. This guy is nuts! Gave me a complete new view on my drumming, practice and music understanding.
Even I know you will/can't comment on my text, I wish you the very best mate. Keep it up Matt, you're the best. Makes me wanna go to Berklee really hard.

Great lesson. The labelling issue Matt talks about around the 15 minute mark for rudiments and stickings in 3, 5, and 7 has sort of been addressed by Gary Chaffee in his Rhythm and Meter series. The A group stickings are a single followed by any number of doubles, so 3a is RLL or LRR, 5a is RLLRR or LRRLL. The C group is three singles followed by any number of doubles, so 3c is RLR or LRL, 5c is RLRLL or LRLRR, 7c is RLRLLRR or LRLRRLL. Using this method you can make up usable stickings for any number. Really good book series.
