What a fantastic review. Spot on about the driver aids. I disabled that straight away. As an owner of an OG M2 this confirms that I need to wait for the new M2 but if I needed a daily the 240i would be up there as a contender.
Oh yeah, my dad test drove an a4 all road a few years ago. He took it up a junction or two on a3 as he knew a god road to drive it on on way back to dealer so he could test it on a number of road types. He likes to put a car through its paces without breaking the law. (Obvs). He had to do a genuine emergency lane change on the a3 whilst hard on the brakes- brakes and esp fantastic but the system keeping you in lane was so strong he nearly lost the car in a tank slapped. My new M240i arrived at the dealership a couple of days ago, minus some options. In fact I decided not to take it as two that I consider essential are missing. I now hope to have one from another branch of the same dealer. It won’t be perfect but I think it will be amazing anyway. I thought about black, but eventually went for Brooklyn Grey which I think will be better for not showing the dirt 🤞 Thanks for your reviews of the M240i Joe, you confirmed to me that I was ordering the right new car. Roll on September 1st!
@@stevehs4287 both the M240i Pro Pack and the Comfort Pack were missing. I think most if not all the Pro Pack is now included in the base model and my car was built during the changeover period from the old spec to the new one.
@@stevehs4287 I ordered more or less straight after Joe’s first video came out. He also did one about exchanging his M4, and the very good trade in price at the time (February I think) so I decided to see what my local dealer would offer me for my one year old M135i. I have been without a car since!
Have to say, I have been driving mine for a month now and never really noticed the safety features interfering (I am going to be paying closer attention after watching this). Couldn't be happier with mine, although I will say coming from a 2014 Focus it's an insane upgrade so I don't have as much attention to detail to compare to similar 'performance' oriented cars.
Thanks for this great report on your experience. I am currently on an M135i in misano blue, which is even more of a daily driver because of it's versatiliy and available space, and still fun to drive, though I am planning to switch to an M240i once the company lease runs out on the Oner.
You don't want the rear to be less dampened than the front. Believe it or not the rear moving up and down can control the steering. But this is my experience with a Z3 which has the same rear as the e30 due to space. Modifying and tuning that suspension to my liking, I have all the dampening soft with it stiffer in the rear, because the ability to steer that car with the throttle is exaggerated. The effect is if I need more over-steer, I let off the throttle for a split second to let the weight in the rear shift up then I get on it gain once it has repositioned itself. Or if I need more understeer to hold the rear down, I will give it just a little more throttle. Of course, this doesn't make up for knowing how to drive a road, because I can still over cook a corner and lose it either by plowing on straight or sliding sideways. But that's the thrill of driving.
luv the back and whole car get mine in 10 days and got a great deal from BMW £3500 off whereas for the RS 3 no discount and it has a crap cheap cabin, and it was £9000 more so kept that in my pocket for the future upgrades a stage 1 tune giving it 430 bhp, and new springs thanks.
Interesting that you said the brakes fade quite quickly. I just drove it around the Dubai Autodrome club circuit layout yesterday. 7 Laps in and pushing the car i felt no brake fade at all. Brakes were obviously hot afterwards but I didnt lose confidence in the car on track.
Nice review. I had the opportunity to acquire M2, M3 or M240i and I went for the later one simply because I could not go pass AWD. Growing up with Subaru WRX it is just to hard to settle for only a 2 wheel drive car.
I feel you on this… I also came from a wrx sti and i have a hard time accepting a rwd. While I would like to try a rwd car, something about not being able to drive the car unless the conditions are just right, somewhat deters me.
Enjoyed the video as usual. Mine will be the only red one on the road if it ever comes. On order since March now quoting Jan 23 build! You probably need the upgraded brake pack as mentioned very good value but I'm sure all fine for road use. I will cover 20-25000 miles a year so hopefully will tick most of the boxes. Tempted by RS3 but never liked Audis and would be MUCH more expensive to maintain.
Once the ECU is cracked on these and you're able to tune the B58, the M240i is going to be a weapon. A tune, decat and some coilovers will make these another level.
German car makers are so smart. They make 3 versions of the same car at tiered price points. I’d like to see a head to head review comparing this with the m440i c drive since they’re the same car. I just love the look of the 4 series front
Joe the problem here over United States is that those safety systems have to be put in place ..because we have people over here who like to eat and text message and watch movies while they are driving and drift in other peoples lanes ..so over here it’s a blessing to have that prevent someone from colliding with you.
Joe I 100% agree about these safety systems in modern cars. I’ve had my car slam on the anchors because the system didn’t realise I was weaving in and out cars parked on either side of the road. Very dangerous when someone else is right behind you 😡
Hi Joe, what a great video. Think I recognize some of those roads .. A339 by any chance? Anyhow - I had an M240i on order since May, with no build date. My dealer called me the other day to say the build date is bouncing around, and he'd got a couple of cancelled orders for M240i's would I like to consider one of them. I visited the dealer on Sunday, he also had a cancelled order for an M340i xDrive which was fully specced out - I drove their demo M340i, then jumped into their demo M240i - and WOW what a difference between the two, even though I believe it's the same engine, M240i was night and day different, so much more responsive just seemed far sportier everywhere. Needless to say, I did decide to go with one of the cancelled orders rather than wait until some time next year for mine to be built with who knows what parts missing due to shortages ... just awaiting for the carbon-pack to be put on to it and get it ceramic coated, the car I'll be getting is in Brooklyn Grey, which I think will look nice with all the carbon fibre added ... can't wait ... well I have to, possibly 2weeks!! LOL -- thanks again!
Found the same negatives as you on mine… you stated that with the new interiors (curved display) you lose the buttons and i agree that it’s upsetting… but you didn’t mention that you’ll lose the gear knob. I can understand it on some suv or 2er active tourer… but not on an M light car… don’t you agree?
Your comments are mostly fair I'd say. On the steering, I've made peace with that. Since hydraulic systems will never come back, I've moved on. The brakes are adequate for the street but not for track. Then again, all BMW M cars traditionally have needed upgraded brake pads and steel brake lines for that sort of driving. Non-M cars are not really track weapons. I have an M2 and it's suspension is quite rough on the streets.
Thank you Joe for doing this long term review, especially at 9:50 where it is shown how to deactivate the lane assist. I'm still awaiting delivery of my M240i and thought it was going to be more of a hassle, but this isn't so bad-- at least until a coder figures out how to disable it through an ODBII device.
You won't need a coder if its the same as my 340i - just set which (if any) individual safety systems you want working and that's it. The car will keep your settings until you change them - it won't default to all on each time you stop the engine.
@@manliomattiabettoni7320 I'm no expert - this is my first BMW - but I find it strange that different models would have different ways of altering the settings, unless of course you have newer/older models. Mine is 2022 model and even the owners manual shows how to set the safety applications you want. Are you configuring individual via the settings odr simply turning it off on the dashboard button? Maybe this is the issue? Mine is configured individual and definitely stays where I want it. Could also be country specific - I'm UK.
Brake fade is likely just the brake fluid. It’s the first thing to go really. Put on some RBF700, problem fixed. For better performance, some EBC pads and stainless steel lines will do the trick
Credit to BMW for providing an easy way to turn off the infuriating safety features. Other manufacturers could take note instead of burying it in menus
Had a test drive in m3 comp xdrive today and owning a new 240i xdrive i will say the 1st thing that blown me away was the far better steering feel in the m3 and lack of sharpness in the 240i The m3 had carbon brakes and all i can say is wow! my order is in put it that way!
@@fzr1000981 i must say i like the grill as makes looks aggressive! think more people like know as selling lot better know is the xdrive! and the new m2 will not be as quick as only rear wheel drive! also only steel brake option! should look the dogs though! but over 70k with few options for a m2?
Great video as ever Joe. I have just purchased a 2018 M240i from my local BMW dealership in Stoke. It's my first ever BMW and I love it. First rear wheel drive car, first straight six. A car of many firsts. I plan to keep it for a while. My question, and yes there is a question. Is the newer X -Drive model much better? I like the idea of four wheel drive as I live in the Staffs moorlands and winter weather can be a bit challenging. The Z4 is also on my radar. I'll stop waffling now. Keep up the good work. I bought my new car based on your review and it doesn't disappoint. #B58rocks. 😊
A BMW M5 was racing on the freeway today..very impressive! However, in a little coupe, I'd prefer the lighter M230i, and or get a Veedub R...b/c I'm cheap, and it's almost as fast
M5’s are great till they break. Nothing is cheap on it. Great cars if you like bigger cars. I would get a M340 instead and modify it with B58. In todays world of parts shortage, the B58 is in so many vehicles and parts are more available and cheaper because of it. I had a 2016 Golf R and loved that car so much. Great utility with hatch, was quick, and very comfortable. I only got rid of it because I got an RS3. RS3 has been amazing. Fast, comfortable, sounds amazing, and great in any weather climate. I’m looking for a next car, but now undecided. Want a Porsche badly, but prices are too hiked up now. Thought about even an X3M40 as my friends have them. They drive amazing and have great utility. You can also get some older 335’s for cheap. They can be modded to go fast too. I’m having a hard time parting with my RS3. It just does everything so well for me. Although a small SUV would suit me better.
Agh! You’ve made me second guess ordering it in black now. Mine isn’t coming until December (with iDrive 8 curved screen). Maybe they’ll let me change it 🤞. Great review though. I’m so excited for it!
Don’t second guess it. The black looks great. In the three months they had it they seem to have taken it everywhere. Probably never washed it either. My 2022 is coming in next week.
I can somehow accept the curve display in the model year ‘23 but I can not understand why bmw removed the gear lever even on the M light models… what a shame!
I have a 22 year model coming next month and I feel good about it having a normal gear lever but the idrive8 may have helped my resale value? The M240i are so hard to get in Australia I guess I am lucky to be getting anything.
Thanks for everyone's continued support, I hope you're having a great weekend! 👊❤️

My new M240i arrived at the dealership a couple of days ago, minus some options. In fact I decided not to take it as two that I consider essential are missing. I now hope to have one from another branch of the same dealer. It won’t be perfect but I think it will be amazing anyway. I thought about black, but eventually went for Brooklyn Grey which I think will be better for not showing the dirt 🤞
Thanks for your reviews of the M240i Joe, you confirmed to me that I was ordering the right new car.
Roll on September 1st!
What options were missing ?
Geat Video and I fully agree to your comment about the "safety systems". Greetings from Austria
Thanks Joe! Looking forward to a test drive of the new model when I finally get one near me.
Thanks so much Joe. Thought they're might be a commentary on general noise levels, especially dreaded run flat tyres. Best Wishes
Thanks for this great report on your experience. I am currently on an M135i in misano blue, which is even more of a daily driver because of it's versatiliy and available space, and still fun to drive, though I am planning to switch to an M240i once the company lease runs out on the Oner.
omg! thank you for talking about the auto lane control. I got so scared driving X7 and felt like it was pulling me away from the road.
It was good to see you at the British GP. Somehow even taller than I expected
But that's the thrill of driving.
just got mine with the new Idrive system and screen and its amazing!
luv the back and whole car get mine in 10 days and got a great deal from BMW £3500 off whereas for the RS 3 no discount and it has a crap cheap cabin, and it was £9000 more so kept that in my pocket for the future upgrades a stage 1 tune giving it 430 bhp, and new springs thanks.
What's that flashing thing at 0:27 ?
I agree with you about the pain in the a..e “safety” devices, lane assist feels dangerous
Once the ECU is cracked on these and you're able to tune the B58, the M240i is going to be a weapon.
A tune, decat and some coilovers will make these another level.
Thanks Joe. Your video made me to buy M240i XD
I've already saw online that the B58 is more refined than the S58 :) nice !
Very dangerous when someone else is right behind you 😡
Great vlog Joe love your vlogs honest genuine advice keep it up buddy
Whenever I’ve seen one of these in person/on the road I have to say I’m quite a fan. Totally agree about black cars, so hard to maintain well.
Is a lovely car, would love to test drive one to see how it compares with my 140, great video as always Joe🤝
Great video. Hello from USA!
Brilliant Joe. I want one 👍
@@Blade1310 Yes! Thank you so much, even better. You're the best :)
@@chadf3690 You're very welcome! Give these lads a try - from USA but still relevant stuff - I found them very useful. ua-cam.com/users/BeamerView
I own a m240 and it doesn’t keep the settings. Every time you start it the car the lane assist is active
It’s a beauty .. good review too
Brake fade is likely just the brake fluid. It’s the first thing to go really. Put on some RBF700, problem fixed. For better performance, some EBC pads and stainless steel lines will do the trick
Credit to BMW for providing an easy way to turn off the infuriating safety features. Other manufacturers could take note instead of burying it in menus
Such a great car
Great, insightful video!
Can't wait to see the new M2
Had a test drive in m3 comp xdrive today and owning a new 240i xdrive i will say the 1st thing that blown me away was the far better steering feel in the m3 and lack of sharpness in the 240i The m3 had carbon brakes and all i can say is wow! my order is in put it that way!
Wait for the M2, M3 is too big and heavy, plus the beak
@@fzr1000981 the M2 will probably weigh the same as the M3, as did the last generation of M2 competition vs M3 competition
Won't be quite as heavy, perhaps 150 to 200 lbs lighter by most estimates. Smaller and more nimble. Same power potential. Can't wait
@@fzr1000981 i must say i like the grill as makes looks aggressive! think more people like know as selling lot better know is the xdrive! and the new m2 will not be as quick as only rear wheel drive! also only steel brake option! should look the dogs though! but over 70k with few options for a m2?
@@26Tackle.reviews xdrive may be available but probably handles worse
#B58rocks. 😊
The looks just haven’t grown on me yet, the previous gen with m sport accessories is a gorgeous looking car.
A lot of G42 230 videos out and about...how about an Achillies Analysis of the 230 to the 240????
Please can you get your hands on the latest type r? Would love to hear your review on that
I agree with the rear comments. The tail lights are too small.
Great review as always Joe, would you have a DCT M2 COMP or a m240ixdrive as your only road car?
I have on my old car F10 BMW 520d SE automatic 2012. I’m very love for BMW.
Hi Joe, Great video as usual, a bit of topic but is there anyway you can do a video on how to setup the perfect driving position ( sit setup). Thanks
Nice review Joe
I can somehow accept the curve display in the model year ‘23 but I can not understand why bmw removed the gear lever even on the M light models… what a shame!
I have a 22 year model coming next month and I feel good about it having a normal gear lever but the idrive8 may have helped my resale value? The M240i are so hard to get in Australia I guess I am lucky to be getting anything.
It seems that you really love this BMW M240I and the engine in particular 😉.
Great cars ! Wicked at just doing it all so well
