Living with the BMW M240i X-Drive - Who needs an M2 ?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 кві 2022
- One week and over 500 miles of living with the new BMW M240i X-Drive and the first questions is who needs an M2 ? This new range topping 2 series packs a punch with just over 370 horsepower and four wheel drive it delivers one of the most impressive 0-60 times I have experienced. At £48,000 this press car is well specced and I think delivers a great package for the money.
All I can say is if the 'M-Lite' 2 Series is this good then just how epic is the new M2 going to be when that arrives ?!

What do you love and what do you hate about the M240i ?
Curious about the mpg when you and Mrs Petrol Ped took that longer journey?
Everything is perfect apart from the lack of Apple car play integration.
*LOVE:* Exterior design over all, PURPLE, performance, headlamp DRLs, still has iDrive 7
*HATE:* No manual without going M2, sport seats unavailable in US (and not avail in Oyster anyway), smaller rear seat space, no donut spare.
I ordered one. ^_^
Love the sound, love the colour, love the performance, love the front end. Looks like the back end was designed by a different team that either didn't get the full brief or fell out with the other designers of the rest of the car. More reviews by Mrs. PP. 👍😂😂
I have to agree with you, the face is pretty but you won’t look over your shoulder and admire that rear end! 😆
I bought my new M240 in March 2024 in thundernight. Apart from a sunroof it has everything and I have had so many compliments on it. The performance is great and it looks much better than the M2 and was £16k cheaper. Well happy tbh.
Really do love those doggie shots with all the green and the mansion in the back, reminds me of Van Morrison´s Veedon Fleece Album cover, although there being Irish Wolfhounds involved *giggle*
Ah yes, amazing car overall, going to trade my 335i for one of them this year. Brooklyn Grey by the way. No bullshitting.
Loved the review! Great that you had a chance to put some miles on it and experience how versatile and comfortable it is for a road trip. I agree it’s well-priced vs the competition, the way it drives and sounds and the interior quality are all fantastic. Following a demo a month ago have ordered one. I can’t imagine how quick M2 will be but tbh it’s likely to be a bit too hardcore for me (not to mention expensive!)
Styling… well it’s one of those cars which looks so much better in the metal than in photos!
This is an amazing car but the seat operation leaves tons of opportunity for improvement. When it raining and I need to get someone in the rear, we getting wet waiting on the seat to move.
For 95% of people looking for a fast, comfortable, entertaining, practical sports car, this is it.....the other 5% would probably be looking at the M2.
Indeed 👍
Must have watched this video about 10 times. Brilliant review. Pulled the trigger today and ordered one in black, fully spec’d. Bargain of the century in terms of the performance and creature comforts for the money. Test drive blew me away, it’s one of those cars that the looks and performance only really come across in person. This video helped make a pretty easy decision even easier, and looking forward to watching it over and over whilst I wait for delivery!
That’s great to hear. Congrats on the new car 👍
Congratulations! When are you expecting delivery?
@@stevehs4287 thanks! expected delivery is November. I reckon it could be Christmas time - but anything before that is a bonus! Long wait, but well worth it!
@@Parallellines60 ….6 months on has your car arrived?!
Brother , I bought mine for the same reason, for what you get it’s pretty economical lol . Enjoy this beautiful car
It looks cool I reckon. Makes you wonder what the upcoming M2 is going to be like. Great insightful review. Thanks from NZ.
Superb video once again, always guaranteed that you deliver every time. Brilliant.
Thanks John. Much appreciated 👊
I think you hit the nail in the head , it’s enough car to get you into trouble , at least twice 😂, but the rear !!! thank goodness it isn’t visible whilst you’re driving it 😊pricing for something so quick and of quality seems pretty good too , nice one Peter .
Great review, from what i've seen they do seem to be quicker than BMW claim! I placed an order last August, like most car manufactures all experiencing delays in parts and manufacturing, fingers crossed should arrive by June. Good to see the car offers a wide range of personalities from calm and comfortable to something more involving and exiciting. Can't wait. Keep up the great reviews.
dammmmmm.. last August 😢😢
Great review. Think I'd put up with it's backside for the performance! Might set my sights on a used one in a couple of years time. Keep the wonderful B58 that my M140i has. Thanks Pete 👍
Got a F22 version and love that , can’t wait to get my hands on this version , think it looks and sounds awesome especially in that bling purple. Cracking review and video as usual PP 👌
Thanks Dave 👊
Hi Pete, I had one for a few hours and as an M2 Comp owner my thoughts as follows;
1. On a typical B road in perfect conditions the M240i would keep an M2C honest (ie there would be nothing in it). If those perfect conditions change, say a little damp or more bumpy the M240i will be ahead and the M2C driver getting slightly sweaty!
2. The interior, whilst not to my taste (the dials) makes the M2C feel like an older generation
3. The quality of materials on the touch points is higher
4. The grip inspires confidence (potentially over confidence)
5. The looks are, different but in typical BMW fashion will probably grow in acceptance.
So why didn’t / haven’t I made the change? It’s the sensory experience of the M2C. There is an edge to it which keeps you fully awake. You can get in that M240i and drive at real pace with limited time behind the wheel such is the quality of the systems supporting the driver, take those liberties in an M2C and you’ll likely be in a hedge! As you say I can’t imagine what the new M2 will be like! Now just one problem, after driving the M240i I was in a used 981 GT4 the following week - whilst that’s a tale for another time it really brings home the difference between a very fast coupe and a sports car in terms of sensory experience! All the best Pete tho next time tease Joe Achilles about the tyres😂. All the best, Kevin.
Thanks for this Kevin. Really interesting 👍
I agree!. Coming from an m340i I couldnt feel It so sporty car as the m2c. The m240i should be a bit more agile but again as Kevin stated is a different experience.
I noticed some m2c owners trading their cars for the new m240i. It has all to do on how they drive and what they are looking for.
Let’s see how will be the new m2. But for the price I would be cross shopping other brands o as well.
@@bm_wuratli6883 😱
Thanks for the info!
Normally no particular interest in BMWs but this engine sounds great.
The old M240i and M140i sounded much better, pre 2019 as they don't have a PPF :-))
The fact that BMW could have just produced a hot fwd M240i but didn't is to be applauded. I like the 2 series coupé and the M240i will definitely be on my list of cars to look at when the lease on the i30N comes to an end.
Great review Ped.
Excellent all round review guys 👏 Also Ped, you genuinely look ten years younger and very "fit", that hard work is really paying off 🙌
No mention of pilot 4s's ?
Thanks mate. That is very kind of you to say. Finally that makes me your age 😜😂
Good Review, Much better to look at and appreciate than the current G80 M3/M4 models.
cheers for the video. i ordered one 2 weeks ago. cant wait!
Congrats 👍
Awesome vlog ped keep them coming 👍👍
Thanks Ped, you have reassured me that I did the right thing when I ordered one!
You sure did 👌👍
Love it.
Just over 50k for a car with that sort of performance quality and running costs.
Cars that have similar performance and quality will cost a good chunk more money.
Im sold
That is some car, sound great drive well for any trip and has the turn of speed to get you into major trouble, great review!!
Thanks 👍
Great review.. in the US and you give a great all around description. Love the car.
Thanks! 👍
Excellent vid Ped!! Love the family aspect with the boss and the children!! 😉 Seriously nice to see a wider opinion!! 🙂 Really was thinking about buying this car… but as you say possibly a brilliant 2nd car… for us crazy boys… damn.. just bought a mini electric L3 for the wife as our second car… which frankly is absolutely fantastic.. our main car though is a Bmw g21 touring 330d xdrive which is brilliant too and manages to fit most of the family for long road trips.. so I suppose better just be happy with what we’ve got!! 😉 I am happy but love your content too!! 😊 Best regards
Always like to get Mrs PP on if I can 😜👍
Great video Pete, I’m getting more and more convinced about getting a M240i X-Drive now 👌🙏
Go and get a test drive 😜👍
Love mine, but when I really want to have fun, I go to my Boxster GTS!
This review helped with making my decision. Excited to drive my 2022 m240i x drive!
Great to hear 👍
I like it and it is the choice of Petrolhead Tours for their latest tour cars
The interior is very similar to my BMW 330e MSport...... And guess what? I love it. ..............
I like this car Pete. Its a great coupe. At least the grill is normal and not bugs bunny. Regards to those dogs! They are one of the highlights of your channel.
Don’t I know it 😜😂😂
I have never been a huge BMW fan but that is a nice car.Not sure about the rear but I do like the 4wd system.I think I would have to go for a different colour though.I reckon that after a year or two it would start to annoy me.Great vid as always, thanks.
Starting to come around to the looks although triangular front grills and wide set stubby tail lights still jar (Maybe an LCI fix in a couple of years?!) - blue , black or thunder night to soften the looks for me until then. Can’t imagine a better combination of size, engine performance, exhaust note and chassis though - Shame I need the practicality of 4 seats currently. Another great video Pete/Mrs Pete
I like it alot , more aggressive looking than the old one which I have . Ped what exhaust would you put on and would you change your mini for one as a daily ?
Not sure what the options are 😬😂
Cracking UA-cam video Peter, thanks for sharing 👍. A bit pricey IMO, but ruddy fast and I think quite a looker!
Ruddy fast 😂
well well well...my first impression was a wow..the bugger is diffferent,definetly a something,performance looked impressive,nice car,oh and the pups...sweet vid
Thanks 👍
Test driving one of these tomorrow, really looking forward to it!
Enjoy 👍
@@PetrolPed The test drive was very enjoyable to put it mildly - it was exactly as you described. Just need to work out whether the cost to change from my current 440i GC is worth it..........
Thank you for a great video and review.
This maybe the one to tempt me away from a cycle of 3 and 4 series.
They have developed a car to appeal to a market.
Much credit to BMW marketing to have courage to develop a small fast compact coupe.
👍
Love it. The M240 format is going to be a real winner. Why do you need anymore performance on the public road. This has to be the ultimate daily road car.
What a stunning car really impressive! Great review now we’ll done ✔️
Thanks bud 👍
I appreciate the review, thank you. In the past 5 years I've owned an Audi S4 and Mercedes AMG C43, both priced around $60K USD. Both very nice cars. For around $53K out the door (and with superior performance in comparison) this car is an amazing bargain. To be honest I don't understand all the consternation about the styling - especially from the rear - this is hands down a gorgeous car from any angle. I will be ordering a 2023 in the next two weeks. Even found a SoCal dealer willing to go a bit below MSRP.
It's all in the eye of the beholder, but honestly those taillights are just awful! Old taillights, and headlights were better in the previous model!
What dealership did you go through if you don’t mind telling?
I took delivery of my 2023 M240i and out the door price is $62,300 with tax, not $53k you mentioned. It could be that i have xdrive and adds many options. Anyway, very nice car.
@@MauiiwauiSouth Bay BMW in Torrance, CA was offering a few thousand off the 2024 m240is.
@@yujie1973Yes, it sounds like you have all the bells and whistles!!upgraded seats, premium/light package, shadow line, Harmon karmon sound system and maybe even the tire and cooling package! Also, the RWD variant is $2,000 cheaper than the AWD version
That put a smile on your face! Love it. I'd have one.
Sure did 👍
Great video! Really like the filming and editing! As for the car, I mean in my personal opinion it's pretty horrid visualy..a huge dissappointment.. But it's a great piece of engineering no doubt and I can imagine it's great fun to drive!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great video thanks!
The damn thing has had a facelift already 😱
The option packs are now all different, and it gets the new 3 series mega-screen dash with OS8 (as it’s based on that)
I sent my order in last night. First auto for me 🤓
Do you think BMW will get an M140i.2 on their press fleet?
That B58 is awesome. Really enjoyed it in my M140i and in hindsight moving to an OG M2 N55 wasn't the best decision I made. M140i best all-rounder. M2 just wasn't practical enough. M-Lites are a great balance.
Mega engine 👍
I’m the other way around, I came from an M240i to an OG M2 and I literally couldn’t be happier, the car feels alive.
Always had a soft spot for a BMW coupe, owned various 3 Series ones for 13 years! I think the 2 Series may have taken over from the old 3 series. Enjoyed the video 👍
Thanks 👍
An interesting comparison would be between this and my old 1986 325i Sport. When new, that seemed simply wonderful but now it would not know where the 240 went…I might head to the configurator just for fun! 😎😎😎😎Safe driving.Richard!!😀😀😀😀
Fantastic review again, torn between this and the stinger, bizzare comparison I know but im definitely leaning towards this
Love a Stinger 👌
What are your thoughts on the front end grip & turn in without the wider front wheels and PS4S tyres you get with the Pro pack, do you think it's lacking in anyway ? i have ordered one in pretty much the same spec without the pro pack but in Portimao blue & im not sure if i should alter the spec . Thanks
First off great video and I always love when both you and Mrs G are in the video. It’s cool to get her input to.
2nd I’d have to say the 240i is a looker. But the 240i is more like that girl who’s easy on the eyes but not everyone’s first choice. But once she’s with someone then everyone wants her.(hope that makes sense) I think this car looks way better then the m3 or m4. The rear end isn’t terrible in my opinion but definitely not the best.
3rd I think the color is cool. Maybe not my first choice. Definitely reminds me of the crazy colors old and now newer muscle cars get. All around Sir Pete this is a bmw I’d consider getting if I didn’t have my z28 camaro, which I finally got back from the shop! She’s running strong! Just have to do a full detail and add my sticker!
Great video, thanks! Curious about your thoughts on 230i xdrive. It's a lot cheaper, light on fuel, and apparently not much slower
I have said many times before, BMW and Audi have some cracking everyday cars. 👍
I love it, I have an 11 month old 128ti and I'm seriously thinking about one of these.
😬😬😬
Same here, I have an 18 month old M135i. I’m actually going to test-drive one tomorrow… :)
@@samuelchopard
What were your thoughts after the test drive ?
@@stevehs4287 It’s definitely on another level, I’m still amazed! The car looks amazing “in the flesh”, much better than on photos. Same goes for the sound. It already sounds good on video, but in real life it’s even better (inside and outside). Starting this B58 is an experience on its own. My M135i almost sounded like a hybrid after driving the M240i (maybe I’m exaggerating a bit here lol).
Unfortunately I couldn’t really test the handling because I didn’t have enough time to go to a proper road…
One big difference is the gearbox. It’s much smoother and sharper than the Aisin (which is already not bad). I could definitely notice the difference in gearshift speed. The gearshifts on the M135i are fast, but with the ZF it’s practically instantaneous.
If you are interested in one, the best is to find a way to test-drive one and feel it. It makes a huge difference. Oh, and don’t bother testing a 340i or a 440i, it won’t feel the same. I test-drove a 440i back in February and I was underwhelmed. The M240i feels very different in my opinion.
All that’s left for me now is to sell my M135i… it’s a great car, but I want a little bit more :)
Hope that helped :)
@@samuelchopard
Thanks for your write up Sam, much appreciated. I’m going to book a test drive and if I like it place an order. Only issue is there is a long wait time for this car in the UK , I’ll be looking at Xmas delivery I’m guessing. All the best !
Mrs Petrol Ped looks very comfortable Pete and certainly looks like she enjoys the drive. Mrs PP got the right idea in ECO for sure , I'm just a wus though mate 😅🤣🤣👍👍
I love it!!!
I love the BMWs new 240i Xdrive &the colour.
Same 0-60 as a Ferrari FF for half the price of a 10yo FF. Similar real-world 0-60 as a base 911 for about half the price, but this is AWD. Much quieter cabin than a 911, too. I like the looks. The rear end isn't its greatest feature, but it's not offensive, IMO. And the 992 911 also has a rear end that many consider awkward. Personally, I also rather like this dark purple colour. Great straight-six engine.
Very practical for its format. It's no more intended to be a family car than a 911, but still it's more practical. Also, as so many claim the 911 has too much cabin noise for daily use, this would make a better daily performance car.
As for this versus the upcoming new full monty M2 and even more hardcore variants: this is already more than powerful enough for the road. So, if not interested in the track, look no further; this is the one. And, FWIW, I fully-optioned one of these for 52-53K. That's rather amazing for what you get, and considering BMW normally likes to charge like a wounded bull for options.
For track use, you may well want to wait and likely opt for an M2. Of course, it will likely cost significantly more money, and be far less compliant on the road.
Wonderful car. Wonderful video.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Wow love it.... having played with our Cooper S in sport mode today.... I like it 😃 , give it to Evolve and get an Eventuri intake 😉
It does sound good Pete ! Colour not my style but that being said it’s quick mate 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
Loved the Purple People Eater👍
👍
Thanks for the informative video I would like to ask about your opinion to get m240 or m440 if I don’t care about rear seats
Or budget 😜 M440 for sure. Mega car 👍
I enjoyed watching the Video Review. I actually like the style and design particularly the Interior. The Model Is more designed for a couple
Great, balanced review Ped... I'm seriously thinking of swapping my Golf R, 7.5 for one of these. I've not seen a bad review yet... I also much prefer the subtle dash in this earlier version compared to the 2023/24 massive landscape ipad-type affair. Looks like a great all-rounder.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Been looking at one of these as a second car to have a bit of fun with but £50k is crazy. Other than that it ticks all the boxes for me. Nice review and glad Mrs PP enjoyed it.
Car prices as a whole are on the rise - a Golf R starts from £40k now . I think in the current market the M240i is a bit of a bargain for what you get .
@@stevehs4287 The issue is by the time you work out the monthly payments on it, what else could you get for not much more? But you are right cars generally are getting properly expensive now. Two years ago I bought a 6 month old BMW 6GT for £30k, I am now getting offers for more than that to buy it back!
I now have seen the car so much I can't remember why I didn't like the rear end. I love the whole car. Think I will buy one.
Morning pal, back playing catch up, just got back from that Worksop run, which ya know about lol wink fist bump! Love this colour, wow.
Very nice, I’ve got a 220i on order for June delivery - maybe not a powerful as the 240 but should be fun nonetheless.
It sure will be 👍
For some reason teh rear reminds me a bit of a holden monaro. Will it grow on me. i'll wait to see it in person.
I love the rear. 👍👍
Great pup views!
👍
Thanks for the review Ped. Would you rather have this or an RS3?
For the money this is a very compelling package compared to the new RS3 👍
With hindsight I think I may have seen you out and about. Was on the road down to CASS and you pulled into a gateway. Very nearly turned round and was going to ask whoever was driving what they thought, as this is on my radar for next car. Was coming back from the circuit having watched some of the Spring Sprint.
Yep. That would have been me 😜😂
Great review. Just bought this in the same colour.....18 months lead-time however sigh! I currently have the M235i Gran Coupe which is pretty horrible after the M140i, so I cant wait to drive a car that is rear wheel biased and sounds pretty good as a 6 should! My 18 year old will just have to have his legs shortened for his time in the back!
18 months to get one built? That’s insane. Have they reduced that time now?
Is the m240i rwd worth it? Here in chile the 2024 only comes in rwd.
Came for the M240, stayed for the schnauzers. Love your dogs!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I'm still waiting for mine. I ordered it 8 months ago. Mid August, I hope. I can't wait. You would not believe what I'm trading in for the 240 so I won't tell you. Loved the dogs, as well. Thank you. Dana Rushton - Australia
😜👍
I was torn between this or an m2 comp. Just put a deposit for an m2 but it might have been the m240i had the wait times been much shorter.
can you do a video on the vbox set up please. Who is it for, why you might want to have one, etc, thanks
Yep. That’s a great idea 👍
3.7 seconds, that is amazing. Still want an M2 though.
😂😂😂
Great review as always 😀
I noticed your lucky enough to have apple carplay in the car.
Lucky you. lol
I picked up my brew BMW last weekend and was told there was no carplay or android auto until a software update sometime in Q2 or Q3!!!! They have basically removed the function.
They have also removed WiFi!!!!
Abysmal !!!!
Only just aware of this 🤷♂️
Hi Ped
Great engine, gearbox & transmission combination. Forget any aftermarket exhaust, this sounds just fine.🥰 However styling NO, front still not there yet, and the back terrible. At that price I would want a more complete package.😥
What was the average mpg in eco mode ?
Quick question please Pete.. m240i or TTrs ?? Eagerly waiting your advice. Thanks.
Blimey. Both great cars but TTRS for me 👍
Really like this car , I'm a big fan of the 2 Grand Coupe though which I'd like to own with this engine ,although not sure I'm ready to change from my 2019 C Class Convertable to one though 🤔🤨 think it will be the 430i cabby when I do change ,if I'm honest, especially now it's got the soft top..

Hi Francois hope you have a great weekend as well! I’ll get to drive my z28 camaro this weekend so it will be a good one!
I think im getting to the age where i need a large fast saloon car as my old Colt Ralliart hot hatch is literally giving me arthritis LOL , great for track days or street circuits but on long journeys my arms are stuck in the steering position for 3 days after so yeah new car time me thinks lol
Hi I am looking to buy a new m240i or a 6 month old Audi S5 coupe vorsprung which one would you go for can not make my mind up
How are you satisfied with the M sport seats, are they to stiff for longer rides?
Really comfy 👍
Love the car and the colour. If i have any gripes at all its fake diffusers. They go to the lengths of putting a fake in why not make it do something
Excellent review. I own a 230i coupe which has 255hp and 295 torque with rear wheel drive. It’s about 300lbs lighter than the 240iXdrive. I’ve not driven the 240i but I’ve read it’s not as nimble and not as good in the corners due to the increased weight up front. However the 240 is much quicker for sure. Due to,the lack of speed sensation it’s probably too easy to get stopped for illegal speeding! My car has been clocked at 5.1 , 0-60 which is fast enough for me but the 240i is certainly tempting. The problem is there’s no cars here. Maybe in six months a 240i will be available. I purchased this 230i off the showroom floor..
👍
With xdrive you don’t have traction issues so you can get the thrill of accelerating without needing to start at a 40+ roll and worry about going to jail
You should show the under floor boot space on BMWs, since they usually have a huge space.
Nice. and I really mean nice, car. Not a big fan of the looks of the new Beemers but the 2 series is the least offensive. As my brother Drew lives near Goodwood, I've been around some of those roads with him, great for a spin. Not quite the same in his Yeti family wagon or the Rover P4.
Some great roads round here 🙏🏻
Nice watch ❤
Thanks 🙏🏻

Whats the car tax for that..coming back to the UK this year n asking
Hi Pete nice video can you tell me what breed are the dogs many thanks.
Hi Keith. They are Miniature Schnauzers :-)
Great car. We have one. Just keeps on giving. Only problem I have with your otherwise good review is reference to 4WD. It’s AWD which is quite different.
A touch pedantic but glad you enjoyed the vid 😂👍
Who needs an M2? Those who like wide wheel arches and those who prefer aesthetic tail lights :-) Great review nevertheless on a car that is certainly very capable. Also I like the violet paint job!
