this m-lite can do 0-60 in 3.82. Definitely a great option below the M2 and since the front ends are different, this is a viable option if you like the way this looks over the M2.
The loss of the manual is a shame, however, BMW has not offered a manual in the X-Drive cars in quite a few years, so this model wouldn't have had it anyways. Maybe they'll reconsider for the RWD cars for those of us who can't afford the premium of a true M car. The hood and bulging fenders look like a carryover from the previous M2 models, so it'll be interesting to see what the new M looks like.
A week ago we stopped by our local BMW dealer to look at the M240is. The lot was nearly empty of ALL new models, they had zero 240is, one was arriving in 3 months and is already sold. They said three more wore coming after that one in about 5 months and they were already sold as well. The supply chain stories are alive and well.
It looks like a Mustang. BMW's designers saw a Mustang and thought "hey, let's copy that but put beaver teeth on the front everyone is too distracted to realize that we copied a Mustang."
Really liked the original 1series styling. Saw a 135i the other day and it was so cool looking. Don’t know why they had to making this car so much bigger.
Personally, I think this look really nice. It has a unique design that looks bold and is something different. My only issue is a lack of a manual transmission. Having a stickshift and RWD on this would make it an absolute blast of a smaller car to drive. I'm sure it's really fun nevertheless, but I think a stick would fit this car perfectly.
I like how it looks too...even better than the outgoing model. Now can BMW just make one with RWD, manual trans, manual seats, no cameras, no sunroof, no rear HVAC, 4 speakers (not 14!), and fixed grille fins and sell it to me for $35K?
I got to drive these when doing pdi's at my dealer. The looks are questionable looks like a baby Camaro to me. This car handles so well with xdrive just sticks to the road so flawlessly. The m2 should be awesome
Those pilot sport 4s have a little ☆, arent those the ones developed for the m3? And while I'd love an appreciate the effort, the car is already E90 size and weight
Americans can't drive stick anymore. They only want cars that do the driving for them. Americans hate lifting a finger to do any extra work. If something isn't easy to do, Americans won't do it! Soon people in America will have escalators instead of stairs!
By the way, Doug, you can actually configure the middle portion of the driver screen. You have options other than map. For example, I have mine configured to show the driver assist stuff.
I had a 135i for a number of years with the old N54 engine and a 6MT and RWD. Really fun car. With a simple tune they are pretty close on power with current models. Sad the MT is gone. It was a really great transmission. Hopefully they're more reliable now. Lots of fuel pump and injector issues and the water pumps from the factory were garbage. They fixed most of the issues with new parts at least.
Aside from the headlights being weirdly small, I like the look of this car. It's a hell of a lot better than this STUPID trend of oversized grills that BMW is doing with their other stuff, and this car doesn't look like it was released 20 years ago either.
Doug, it’s a ZF8, the best transmission in the world, hands down. And you’re complaining that you get a Rolls Royce transmission, literally, it’s the same one in $600K cars. And, IT’S A FULL MANUAL IN MANUAL MODE.
A pedal doesn’t define manual shifting. I bought manuals my whole life, until I reluctantly bought a ZF8, not understanding it was way more manual than my manuals, because it takes no time to shift into what ever gear you choose, then it stays there. The ZF8 is 50% better than a manual in terms of fun and performance. Plus, my 700HP car gets 31 mpg in 8th, geared for 340 mph at redline. Plus, it has an automatic mode which is 100% required on the drag strip. The initial gear changes happen so fast they cannot possibly be timed correctly by a human.
A great car in a splendid colour. We're getting our BMW 3-series re-painted since we never liked the stock grey. I pick bronze, my wife wants dark green. Maybe we'll compromise on purple?
my old 2 series and 1 series had tons of backseat room for such a small car i could sit behind myself with headroom as a 6ft guy sad to see they lost that
These modern cars with center touch screens are really nice. They located at eye level and in the open. How do they cope with the sun beating down on them?
I like it overall. I had the last gen m240i and by far my favorite car I’ve had. I miss the angel eyes and it’s a little weird that we have a longer wheel base and yet an almost unusable back seat. I was pleasantly surprised that the back seats in the last gen were actually useable. Sneakily so. Rant aside I do like the new one. Just wish it had a manual option
I have the m235i from same generation and agree. I have actually sat a 6 ft 10 friend in the passenger seat comfortably with a little seat lean, and real size adults can sit in the back. It is a great blend of practical everyday driver and fun exciting car for the curves. I like the feature set and performance of the new one, but our gen just looks so much better
This has to be one of BMWs best recent designs, sad to say that, because it isn’t all that amazing. But compared to the 4 series, iX, and the abomination of the 7 series, it looks pretty good
Yeah, I agree with that, but there's kind of a point here - when you pay premium for BMW, the design should be more than just "it's not as bad as the other cars they do". I think Subaru could get away with this just about ok.
and everything was looking great untill they killed the stick. I have never like the series 2 since it was down right disproportionally ugly. This one for the first time look like a car I would buy and a starting price no much more than a brz is honestly looks promising, but yeah, no stick is a dead sentence for me. Nothing against autos, but drivers need the choice, even if it is an option with additional charge like corvettes used to be.
this M2 is not comparable to the BRZ at alllllllll. The BRZ doesn't even have over 200bhp lmao that thing is like a kit car compared to the M2. Even if it is a auto it would absolutely smoke the BRZ any day
@@automation7295 easy, you design the car to fit a manual, they just didn't. Actually, a simple 6 speed manual is significantly smaller than any auto specially a dual clutch.
Love the purple, and the styling is a pleasant surprise given most new BMW's. The lack of a manual transmission makes it a non-starter with me though. Would I take this over a Mustang GT manual? Especially with the price difference? Not a chance!
I had a 2019 gt pp and this car makes more sense in many ways. This car can be used year round , better dealer service and over 32mpg on the highway. My mustang got 26mpg rolling downhill
I bet that rear seat climate control is the exact same as the gran coupe so instead of taking it out for the regular coupe they just left it in so they didn't have to make a different center console.
The 2GC is completely different from the 2 series coupe. It's kinda hilarious that there are three types of 2 series, none of which have something in common with each other: 2 series coupe, 2 series gran coupe, which is basically a 1 series sedan and a 2 series active tourer which is a terrible minivan xD
The 2 series grand coupe or 4 door 2 series has been discontinued. I prefer the rear including the new rear tail lights of the new M2...and I've seen it. I love your quirks of this Bimmer. So much fun to watch...plus you get Doug's way of emphasizing things and excellent production quality. M,M,M,M,M,M,M,M how many M's were there? LOL! You missed the main function of the HUD (head's up display) besides the speed besides the radio which is the navigation: It shows you the directions and the exits including arrows and you have a side display in the center console to the side of the navigation screen. The main reason behind the HUD navigation is that you don't need to take your eyes off the road during an important exit.
Doug, nice review! I’m nearly as tall as you, and I (barely) fit in the back seat of my M2. And I prefer to row my own gears too. It’s interesting to see M Performance models raise the bar above their full-M predecessors. You don’t need to hedge on the future M2 version. Several prototypes of the G87 have been seen at the Nürburgring and elsewhere, with wide fenders visible under the camo. A BMW insider says it will have an S58 tuned to about 450 DIN (can’t upstage its big brothers), it will come in Competition-spec only, a 6 speed manual or ZF8 will be available, and production starts in December as 2023 models. Not sure about the first US deliveries, but I’m watching this closely.
I'll help clear up any confusion here as a seasoned M2 / M3 owner. The M240i is an M car and has been for the past 2 years. The B58 engine, throttle mapping, suspension / chassis, M LSD, brakes, exhaust, etc are all developed by M division and M performance models are listed in the M GmbH global sales figures along with the M2. (not standard BMW GmbH sales figures). It's clearly listed as BMW M on the 2 series build page, ask BMW M and they will tell you. BMW is finally aligning with AMG the past 2 years where they have 2 versions of an M car (A35 AMG vs A45 AMG for example). The A35 is an AMG car even though it's not the higher end track version A45. The M240i is the same...an M performance model whereas the M2 is the "full" track car. The 2022 M240i is faster than last years M2 comp, people are trading in their old M2 for this car for a reason, they don't just randomly throw an M badge on the back of a car unless it's developed by M division just like AMG would never do that. I think the issue here is that they slap M badges all over the place on the interior of "M Sport package" on standard cars like the 230, 330, etc which are definitely not developed by M division and make a lot of purists upset, which I can align with. MB and Audi does the same thing with the "AMG Sport" and "S Sport" packages on base line models, it sells so that's not going anywhere anytime soon. Hopefully that clears up any confusion even though some people will still be stuck in the past, and that's fine too.
I bet BMW engineers purposely dropped the manual option on the “M”240i to give hints to enthusiasts (or shall I say ///Mthusiasts) that this is basically a marketing bs “M car”. It’s basically a normal 2 series with M badges all over it for people who aren’t into driving as much but just want to brag on how they own an “M” car. They want the enthusiasts to get the real M car, the M2 if they really want a manual! Oh and stop bitching about how they dropped the convertible option for this car. You want a convertible 2 series? Get the Z4! They’re practically the same car!
3:35 Back to the 80s :) I guess this makes the 0,1% more aerodynamic and makes the side profil cleaner but its not as practical as the old fridge handle :) 6:50 BMW is doing very well with this approach, you dont have to use the touchscreen because there are dials and buttons. While other automakers have to reinvent buttons because customers dont accept stupid touchscreens. 14:08 They did get rid off piano black on the inside, but then proceeded to make the whole sideskirts and diffuser a shiny black that will be rashed up fast. Just paint the whole car goddamit... 18:06 Atleast they painted these ugly wheel arch extenders on this model. The M3/4 also have these extenders because they need them by law to cover all the tire. But if tires dont fit under the car you gotta widen it the proper way, Audi is good at that :)

Really liked the original 1series styling. Saw a 135i the other day and it was so cool looking. Don’t know why they had to making this car so much bigger.
Because the 1-series went FWD so the 2-series became a slightly reduced 4-series. They cannot build a dedicated chassis only for the 2.
You must never have driven the bmw 8 speed auto
I like how it looks too...even better than the outgoing model. Now can BMW just make one with RWD, manual trans, manual seats, no cameras, no sunroof, no rear HVAC, 4 speakers (not 14!), and fixed grille fins and sell it to me for $35K?

Well, tbf though the “big grills” do serve a proper purpose on those M cars. However not so sure on the electric models.
Doug, it’s a ZF8, the best transmission in the world, hands down. And you’re complaining that you get a Rolls Royce transmission, literally, it’s the same one in $600K cars. And, IT’S A FULL MANUAL IN MANUAL MODE.
"FULL MANUAL" - does a 3rd pedal descend from under the dash?
A pedal doesn’t define manual shifting. I bought manuals my whole life, until I reluctantly bought a ZF8, not understanding it was way more manual than my manuals, because it takes no time to shift into what ever gear you choose, then it stays there. The ZF8 is 50% better than a manual in terms of fun and performance. Plus, my 700HP car gets 31 mpg in 8th, geared for 340 mph at redline.
Plus, it has an automatic mode which is 100% required on the drag strip. The initial gear changes happen so fast they cannot possibly be timed correctly by a human.
If it had a manual, I could overlook everything else.
In Germany you can get the new M3 and M4 with a 6 speed manual. I’d like to think the future M2 will adopt the same.
Thanks for letting me know. I'm not going to watch the rest of this. You saved me about 20 minutes. Thanks.

I like it overall. I had the last gen m240i and by far my favorite car I’ve had. I miss the angel eyes and it’s a little weird that we have a longer wheel base and yet an almost unusable back seat.
It’s always those who never owned the car that talk shit about the car.
This has to be one of BMWs best recent designs, sad to say that, because it isn’t all that amazing. But compared to the 4 series, iX, and the abomination of the 7 series, it looks pretty good
The iX is so damn ugly i shake my head in disgust everytime i see it
Yeah, I agree with that, but there's kind of a point here - when you pay premium for BMW, the design should be more than just "it's not as bad as the other cars they do". I think Subaru could get away with this just about ok.
Have you seen the XM? That's pretty much a bucket of vomit on wheels.
and everything was looking great untill they killed the stick.
Totally agree! If they had a stick option it would be amazing! This M240i pretty much rivals the original M2.
How you the manual would fit on the center console? Manuals usually takes up more space than autos.

Doug listening the new RHCP album at 5:45 lets go!
Can’t wait to see the naked exterior, the performance of it sounds unreal though
Honestly people just believe whatever the journalists said. BMW has been doing this kind of badging since the 80s with m535i.
@@kamikazee3071 correct. The 80’s M535i suspension was developed by M division.
