Audi vs BMW let’s goooo!
Mat’s lining up in the all-new BMW M240i, and he wants to see if this £46,000 2 Series has what it takes to go toe-to-toe with the £71,000 RS5.
So let’s check out the stats. As you can imagine, the RS5 has the ability to put down more power. With a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet, it can produce 450hp & 600Nm of torque. It’s also equipped with four-wheel drive, and it tips the scales at 1,735kg.
Then we have a BMW. It houses a 3-litre straight-six turbo under the bonnet, which can put down 374hp & 500Nm. It also comes with four-wheel drive, and it’s a bit lighter than the Audi, weighing in at 1,690kg.
So the RS5 has more power, but will it be an easy victory? And more importantly, will it prove its worth, given it costs £25,000 more than the M240i?! There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

I wish youd do more old/new comparison, perhaps a track test even. Wouldnt it be fun to see a Ferrari 355 against a new Golf GTI perf. or an old american muscle car with them huge 6-7 liter engines against those little city Fiat Abarth 500s with 170 bhp. That would be insanely entertaining, a bit nostalgic best-motoring-esque
true, and it would also be fun if they did the rolling drag races for the whole 1 mile + not just 1/2 mile. Its fun seeing cars with good aerodynamics/drag coeficient beat cars with less horsepower but that are shaped like a brick. Like it would be interesting to see sth like a jeep hellcat vs. x6m or sth(i think even non M, an x6 with top diesel/gas engine would win) with good drag, both derestricted top speed, and see where the box shape of the jeep catches up with it.
But you would have to make sure the Fiat 500 is not directly in front of the old muscle cars when they do the sound check. It would get inhaled, compressed, burned and spat out the exhaust ;-)
(The brake test would be a very one sided thing in an case...)
man I miss Best motoring ..how great it would be to again see crazy fun races like that. Putting an Escalade with 690 bhp against a sporty fiesta, a bmw m7 or Audi s8 and basic porsche cayman. I loved those comparisons. The did great both the serious stuff and more real world like situations.

@@nirfz haha yeah . The brake test would be ridiculous for sure but informative to notice the progress. It would also be kewl to drag race them up a steep hill vs. a flat road to portray that GIANT muscle car torque. I dont think even Top Gear ever did anything like that. Fiat with that tiny 1.4 turbo uphill and muscle car with torque to pull a house. I wonder how much the difference it would make.

I think you should start using racebox timing in each car you are racing. Be good to see the breakdown of each 1, eg 0-60 and actual breaking distances etc
Definitely need braking distances. These tests don't mean much bc a tenth of a second different reaction time can determine winner.

I think Carwow should replace the comfort mode roll race with another roll race from 60 or 80 mph to test out the top end of the cars.
Yeah ikr, cus it doesn't take long to switch between comfort and sport so most ppl if they were to engage in a race would just switch modes
That has to depend on the runway, they domt always record on the same runway every time. So also think of the braking distance

Drove the M240i in March with a few miles on the clock. Felt too tight and flat.
Drove the same car today with 3k miles on the clock.....wow....the sound is lovely even with the GPF, and it felt like a different car.... stunning

that price difference is insane!!! a HF downpipe and E50 tune and maybe a charge pipe and that 240I is walking that RS5 for maybe $1500. also to me the RS5 was at least a car behind the BMW during the breaking test before they even started to break.

Every time I hear these new gen performance cars rev, I die a little inside. A dose of 2016 RS3 exhaust notes revives me.
I'm pretty sure that's because they're European though, right? I have a 2023 RS3 on order right now with the sport exhaust and was assured by the dealer it still had that sweet exhaust note on the American version

Easily fixed with a quick exhaust mod, £300 to remove the resonators and its back to sounding like a monster. Not ideal its not done as standard on the RS models but you can blame regulations for that
Dude your already lost to us if a 2016 sound track is music to your ears. You really need to go back to late 2000s to find the last of the great exhaust notes. Bmw and Merc held out a little into the early 2010s and Audi were out of the race long before then. Shame as they had some amazing sounding v8s in 2006 rs4s
@@braveheart40kglasgow56 the 2.5 5 cylinder turbo is an iconic engine and so is its exhaust sound. From the Volvos and Mk2 Focus ST/RS up to the audi RS3.

I’ve always thought something seems off with the sound when you Rev the engines. It’s as if you completely flatten the sound in post.
It would be better to just record a more raw sound as it would give us a better idea of how it would sound in real life.

The flattening you hear is called compression. That’s the only way you can record loud sounds (exhaust revs) without peaking the mic and blowing out everyone’s ears. A more “raw” sound would require incredibly expensive test microphones, and receiving equipment at the other end. Headphones, DAC/amp, and that’s IF UA-cam doesn’t destroy that quality in its infinitely unknowable pipeline.
@@alecwhatshisname5170 come on, neither of these cars are anywhere near loud enough to max out even a midrange mic.
If I can record playing metal drums on my phone with little clipping they can record the revs without compression.
@@alecwhatshisname5170 people are getting better sound recordings on their phones at car meets. I recorded a jag f-type v8 on my mirrorless camera with a cheap shotgun mic and it sounds way better than when they Rev up on here.
It’s as if they’re recording through 6ft of sound insulation foam.

None M version giving that full performance, higher class Audi a run for it's money . I'd say that is a huge success , and only shows how fast the M version is gonna be 👍🏻

Most city speed limits in US are 50. I know outside of the city it increases.

Oh yes, even a basic tuning chip in a B58 car (m340i m240i etc) can hit 460bhp and do the quarter mile in 11.5 and 0-60 in 3.5

One of my friends has this style of m240i, he's turning that thing into a beast. Hes done a rear seat delete and recaro carbon bucket seats, carbon bonnet, boot, and bumpers and tuned it to produce 430bhp. He said he's not done with it and trying to find ways to push more power and reduce weight.
Lol the b58 can easily make over 600hp with mods already available. 430hp is nothing.
Waste of money.
stage 2 with a big downpipe can already do 500+ lol

Only 45 kilograms of difference between those two cars. It is insane, BMW looks a lot lighter and smaller.
The BMW also got at least 400hp and some nm on top. They‘re always lying a bit when it comes to engine specs to make it seem faster for it‘s power. Whereas Audi has been overstating their specs sometimes in the past 😂

Wish the S5 got more love
After watching a bunch of videos about the m240i, it puts out +400 hp, one reached 406 hp. B58/S58 is a beast of an engine, but there’s no magic, it’s pure power.

@Badger Bill I've owned a clio 172 and a 182, while good handling cars the lift off oversteer shits you up I can tell you! Either way my 340i stage 1 400bhp is in a different league, cornering speeds pretty similar to be fair but any kind of straight it's not even close, all 3 cars had uprated brakes because stock brakes are rubbish

I'd like to see braking distances from the highway code marked along the runway after the braking line. So we'd see that these cars stop from 100mph in the same distance the highway code states a car should stop at 60mph.
I was always a BMW fan,but the audi A5 it's such a beautiful car!

The rs5 did an 11.7 quarter mile on this very channel not too long ago. I've actually never seen it go above 12.0 until now. Probably just to make the race seem more interesting than it would have been!

Yeah I think the gap wouldn't of been as close had they used the Coupe version of the RS5, instead they opted for the heavier sportback version to engineer a closer result...makes for a better video I suppose but in the real world an RS5 would leave the M240i in the dust.

Well rs5 doesn’t even compete with the m240i as its not even a full fledged m car + even the m2 comp doesn’t compare with it because rs5’s direct competitor is m3 competition 🌚 which smokes rs5 pretty badly
